2016 CSP FOOTBALL | WEEK 9 | AT SMSU | OCT 29, 1 P.M. | MATTKE FIELD | MARSHALL, MINN.

MEET THE 2016 TEAM CAPTAINS

Concordia head coach Shannon Currier has announced four captains for the 2016 season, seniors Sam Johnson (LB, Apple-ton, Wis.) and Dominic Nabak (S, Waukesha, Wis.) on defense and senior Darius Chapes (RB, Floral City, Fla.) and junior Matt

Bjork (TE, De Pere, Wis.) on off ense.

To become a captain, players had to go through an formal appli-cation process that also included reading three books, community service and obtain letters of recommendation. The team voted on the applicants who completed the process to select its captains. Three, Johnson, Nabak and Chapes were selected during the spring season with Bjork earning the distinction following fall camp.

SERIES NOTES: CONCORDIA 10, SMSU 9

The Golden Bears hold the slight edge 10-9 entering the 20th meeting between the programs. SMSU has won two of the last three in the series although Concordia picked up a 38-20 win in its last trip to Marshall in 2014. SMSU won last year’s meeting 48-24 in the Mustangs’ fi rst-ever game at Sea Foam Stadium. CSP has won three of the last four games in Marshall since 2009 and is 5-4 all-time on the road at SMSU.

The Golden Bears are a perfect 4-0 under head coach Shannon

Currier, scoring at least 31 points in all four prior meetings. He won his only trip to SMSU in 2003, 37-19.

Series Fun fact: Coach Currier was off ensive coordinator for the Mustangs in 1997 and 1998 before taking the same position for the 1999 season at CSP. He was promoted to head coach at CSP in 2000.

LAST MEETING, 2015: SMSU 48, CONCORDIA 24

The Golden Bears produced season-highs with 23 fi rst downs, 411 of total off ense and 321 passing yards while amassing 35:27 time of possession. But SMSU produced 522 yards, piling up 29 fi rst downs to double up the Golden Bears on the scoreboard.

Concordia used Trevor Tillett under center in the fi rst half as he completed 9-20 for 148 yards and a touchdown while Ben Sch-

ramski played the second half, completing 16-30 for 173 yards and two touchdowns.

Sammy Baucham had a pair of touchdown catches including a game-tying TD from Tillett with 12:24 to play in the 2nd quarter (7-7). He had 3-31 in the game, with his second TD coming in the 4th quarter to narrow SMSU’s margin to 41-17 (9:09).

SMSU scored on its opening drive before CSP’s defense slowed the Mustangs the rest of the quarter including a Brandon Rus-

sell interception and a turnover on downs in CSP territory.

Jonas Schenderlein’s 23-yard fi eld goal narrowed a 14-7 SMSU lead to 14-10 with 6:22 to play in the half, but SMSU added two more scores to take a 28-10 halftime lead. The Mustangs had a 7-0 third quarter to put the game away.

Tight end Jake Munkwitz, now a defensive assistant coach for the team, had a career day with 5-53 receiving and a 14-yard touchdown. Fellow senior tight end Anton Bedeaux also had a career day with 4-72 receiving and a long of 32.

Tillett and Schramski combined to connect with 10 diff erent re-ceivers, fi nding seven of them at least twice.

The running game was keyed by Alex Carr (6-49) and Charles

Arnold (6-34) as the duo combined for a 6.9 average per carry with 83 yards on 12 attempts.

Blake Gimbel led SMSU by completing 25-35 for 243 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for another. He found Nate Huot eight times for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

LAST WEEK: SIOUX FALLS 51, CONCORDIA 17

The sixth-ranked Cougars were too much for visiting Concordia in a 51-17 contest. Concordia was able to slow the top-ranked off ense and second-ranked rushing off ense in the country, though. The Golden Bears held the Cougars to nearly 130 fewer yards of off ense and over 100 fewer rushing in the game al-though USF still tallied 432 total yards and 249 rushing.

The Golden Bears also had their top time of possession perfor-mance of the year, 34:53 to 25:07.

Concordia used an 11-play, 75-yard drive to tie the game at 7-7 as Darius Chapes plunged in for a one yard TD. Chapes had 14-59 on the ground.

He connected with nine diff erent receiv-ers with DeCeon Schumann nabbing a career-high seven re-ceptions for 46 yards while Elias Arlington (4-61) and Marcus

Gustaveson (4-57) were the top yardage targets.

The CSP defense held one of the better quarterbacks in the NSIC, Luke Papillion to 8-25 passing for 141 yards and an in-terception and just 19 rushing yards. But he also passed for two and rushed for another touchdown.

NSIC rushing leader Max Mickey had 16 carries for 128 yards and one catch for 30 yards and three combined TDs. His day in-cluded a 76 yard tTD run and 30 yard TD catch.

MEET THE STARTING QB: RON JOHNSON

Entering fall camp, Concordia had a four player competition for the quarterback position with junior transfer Ron Johnson earning the starting role.

Originally a CSP student-athlete in 2013, Johnson redshirted before transferring to be closer to home at College of DuPage in the Chicago area. He played last year at De Anza College, pass-ing for 1,466 yards and 11 touchdowns including a long of 98 and a pair of rushing touchdowns with a long run of 40.

In week two at UMC, Johnson broke loose by completing 14 of his fi rst 15 including a string of 13-straight completions on his way to an 18-27, 239 yard and three TD passing performance with a TD. He followed it up with 252 passing, 70 rushing and fi ve combined TDs (3 pass, 2 rush) in a shootout loss to UMD.

Behind him will be redshirt freshman Maxon Hutton and soph-more Trevor Tillett. Last year, Tillett started the fi nal four games and compiled 690 yards with four touchdowns through the air in his fi rst taste of college action. Hutton took his fi rst career snaps in week two at UMC and has appeared in fi ve games in 2016. He attempted his fi rst career pass in week fi ve against WSC, completing 5-8 for 52 yards. He’s also rushed 11 times for 46 yards on the season, adding 98 yards of total off ense.

VICKERS COMES OFF RECORD SETTING CAMPAIGN

Sophomore Alquawn Vickers was named a 2016 Lindy’s Pre-season All-America Second Team selection after being a Don Hansen All-America Third Team performer as a breakout red-shirt freshman. The 2015 NSIC Newcomer of the Year and reign-ing All-NSIC First Team all-purpose star led the NCAA with 1,119 combined kickoff /punt return yards and set the single season program record with 998 kickoff return yards.

The standout returner also was one of Concordia’s top receiving threats a year ago with a team-high 37 catches while ranking second with 463 yards and three receiving scores.

In 7 games (1 DNP) in 2016, Vickers has been involved in a va-riety of ways and is 2nd on the team in all-purpose yards with 628. He’s accounted for 60 rushing, 157 receiving, 7 punt return and 404 kickoff return yards while also throwing a 73-yard touchdown pass against UMD to Elias Arlington. Vickers is just 127 kickoff return yards from tying the career record held by

Originally the eighth head coach of Concordia football in 2000, Shannon Currier returned to lead the program for his second stint in December, 2015.

He entered his fi fth season leading the team in 2016 and remains the program record holder for career winning percentage.

In his fi rst stint, he compiled a 32-12 (.727) record and brought the program its fi rst NSIC Champion-

ship in 2003 when he was named NSIC Coach of the Year. The conference title also brought a berth in the Mineral Water Bowl, the fi rst postseason game in school history.

He coached Concordia to four consecutive winning seasons and is the only coach in program history to achieve the feat - consecutive or cumulative.

THE GRIFF MYTH - PROTECTING HOME TURF

The team also established the longest home winning streak in school history under his guidance. Known to the teams as the “Griff Myth,” Concordia tallied 19 consecutive home victories down the street at Griffi n Stadium. The streak began in 2002 and stretched two years after Currier left through the 2005 sea-son, fi nally falling at the beginning of 2006.

In Currier’s fi rst four years, his teams only lost two home games, producing a record of 18-2 after winning his fi rst and last nine home games.

He opened his return with a 17-0 shutout win over U-Mary in 2016, snapping a 6-game home losing streak and a school re-cord 8-game overall losing streak.

CAREER AT TRUMAN

Following the program’s 2003 NSIC Championship run, Currier ac-cepted the head coach position at Truman (State) University where he turned a losing program into a pair of 6-5 winning campaigns in his third and fourth seasons.

His tenure was highlighted in his third year, leading the Bull-dogs to a 6-3 record in a strong MIAA, fi nishing fourth in the league. He left the program following a 4-7 season in 2008 with a 20-35 overall record.

PRIOR TO REJOINING CONCORDIA’S SIDELINES

Following his departure from Truman, Currier spent seven years working outside of the coaching profession as a senior sales manager with iHigh.com working to build a digital platform for high school sports, reaching up to 1.5 million Minnesotans in his fi nal year with the company.

NSIC BACKGROUND & ST. PAUL PRIVATE EDUCATION

He arrived at Concordia in 1999 as off ensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for former head coach and athletics di-rector Dan O’Brien, now an assistant coach for the University of Minnesota.

Prior to joining Concordia, Currier spent two years each in similar roles at Southwest Minnesota State and Minnesota Crookston following his start in college coaching at Bemidji State as an off ensive graduate assistant where earned his mas-ter’s degree in physical education.

A native of Cosmos, Minnesota, Currier was a quar-terback at Hamline University where he graduated with a degree in physical education in 1993.

GUSTAVESON & VICKERS THE EARLY FAVORITE TARGETS

During preseason interviews, head coach Shannon Currier re-inforced two concepts: fi nding ways to involve Alquawn Vick-

ers in the off ense and that freshman Marcus Gustaveson will be an immediate force in the Northern Sun.

Last year, Vickers tied for the team lead in receptions (37) and was second on the team in receiving yards (463) and receiving touchdowns (3) although his fi ve total touchdowns led the team.

In 2016, Vickers has been involved in every aspect of the game as a ball carrier. He has 14-60 rushing, 23-157 receiving, 18-404 on kickoff s, 4-7 on punts and even completed a pass for a 73-yard touchdown. He’s the team leader in receptions (23).

Gustaveson broke loose against UMD with 7-115 yards and two touchdowns while drawing four pass interference calls against the UMD corners. He’s led the team in receiving yards all year, now with 24-335 catches and a team-high 3 receiving scores.

They are the only two with 20+ receptions through 8 weeks al-though 7 diff erent receivers have at least 100 receiving yards on the year and 14 diff erent players have a reception, with 11 catch-ing at least four passes among the team’s 134 completed passes.

Nine diff erent players have hauled in touchdown passes among the 12 total touchdown strikes.

BIG TRADE: DECEON FOR VANTWON

During spring practice, the coaching staff made a key swap with Vantwon Melton moving from wide receiver to corner-back while DeCeon Schumann moved from corner to receiv-er. Schumann caught his fi rst two passes for 49 yards at UM Crookston in week two including a long of 35. Melton also made his fi rst appearance at corner in week two for the defense.

In his fi rst two years as a WR, Melton had 25 catches for 220 yards and a touchdown, hauling in 17-145 with the TD in 2015.

Formerly a cornerback, Schumann had 33 tackles including two interceptions taking one back 42 yards for a touchdown in a road win at Minot State last year. He was in on seven passes defended in 2015.

Schumann set new career-highs in receiving in week seven with four catches for 53 yards and his fi rst career receiving touch-down against the Peacocks. He added to his career-high in re-ceptions by pulling in seven at Sioux Falls in week eight.

On the year, Schumann is third on the team in receptions with 14 for 178 yards.

DEFENSIVE LINE FEATURES EIGHT MAN ROTATION

The top feature of the 2016 defensive line is its depth and how the coaching staff has utilized its mix of experienced upperclass-men and youthful impact players. The starting line features two seniors, a junior and a redshirt freshman while the second wave of four includes a senior, sophomore and two true freshmen.

The statistical leader of the group is senior Ryan McKee (29 TT, 4.0 TFL, 2.0 SK, 1 BLK). Junior Chazz Roberts lines up on the

interior with McKee and has 22 tackles & 5.5 TFL. Re’Shon How-

ard (29 TT, 2.0 TFL, 1 INT) is on one end and redshirt freshman Kelly Pierce is the top playmaker in the backfi eld on the team with 6.0 TFL and 4.0 sacks (27 TT).

Backing them up are, true freshmen Dylan Wood & Cole

Riemer, sophomore Adam Miller and senior Gerardo

Figueroa. Statistically, Wood is the leader of the backup group with 20 tackles, 3.0 TFL & 2.5 sacks.

LINEBACKERS RACKING UP TACKLES

Led by one of the top tacklers in the league, Sam Johnson and his 8.8 tackles per game rank 6th in the NSIC. He’s been con-sistent, recording at least eight tackles in fi ve of the six games he’s played with three double-digit eff orts for a team-high 53 tackles despite missing two full game, and playing sparingly in another.

With Johnson battling through injuries, junior JJ Przybylka has fi lled in with a 17-tackle performance in a week two win at UM Crookston. The 17 tackles are fourth most in a game in school history and tied for second most in a single game in the NSIC in 2016. He’s fourth on the team in tackles with 43 despite playing behind Johnson at MLB for most of the year.

The team has produced eight double-digit tackle eff orts be-tween fi ve diff erent players (four linebackers).

Redshirt freshman Antonio Zepeda made 14 tackles in his de-but against U-Mary in week one.

Senior David Reed returned to the fi eld in week four at North-ern State, making the start at outside linebacker to lead the team with 14 tackles in the game and is already tied for second on the team with 44 stops in just fi ve games.

Junior Billy Brown started the fi rst three games of the year and has continued to see a large amount of snaps following Reed’s return. He’s made 33 tackles including 3.5 for loss and a sack.

NABAK PATROLS THE SAFETIES

Senior captain Dominic Nabak had a huge end to the 2015 season, making 10-plus tackles in four of the last six games in-cluding a career-high 16 tackles in the fi nale at Augustana. He opened 2016 strong with seven tackles including one for a loss in a 17-0 shutout win over U-Mary, had a 70-yard INT for touch-down in a week 2 win at UMC and remains second on the team with 44 tackles and leads the team with a pair of interceptions.

Sophomore Brandon Russell is the other starting safety and has made 36 tackles with 4.0 for loss and a forced fumble. He’s matched his career-high in tackles (7) in three of the last six games and has 1.0 tackle for loss in four of the last six games.

Freshman Brian Lanier has continued to emerge, starting the last three games making 18 tackles in those three games includ-ing a career-high 10 in week seven against Upper Iowa. He’s up to 34 tackles on the year.

FORE & JOHNSON TEAM UP AT CORNER

Junior Jamie Fore and senior Jonathan Johnson have teamed up as the starting corners in 2016. Fore is a sure tackler with 40 stops along with a pair of blocked kicks, a forced fumble at the goal line, 2.0 TFL, an interception, fumble recovery and fi ve pass breakups.

Johnson’s play has made a huge impact as he’s ranked 10th in the NSIC with nine passes defended (INT+PBU). He’s broken up eight passes and has an interception for touchdown (34 yards) against UMD.

The corner duo are junior college transfers in their second year in the program. Fore started seven of the nine games he played last year while Johnson earned one start in eight games.

A third junior college transfer, junior Andrew Capirchio has made three starts at the corner. Although he’s made just 12 tackles in eight games, Capirchio has totalled four pass break-ups and an interception as he’s seen an increased role.
