    Example of PlayChapter 5

The MagnificentMuse in... TheresSomething in theWater! (Guest

Starring Dr.Moonlight]So, how does it work?

Glad you asked. Presented hereis an Issue ofCC&VF, startingwith the background of the Issue, and then with how it played out, using characters presented in theCC&VFrulebook.

    The Issue, as

Plotted by the EditorProfessor Prestige (see page 62)is at it again! This time he hashis eyes on a stealth airplane. He has a buyer quite interestedin procuring such an item, andProfessor Prestige loves any sort ofchallenge, especially one this big.

He has settled on the LockheedMartin F-22 Raptor. You cando a Web search for furtherinformation if needed.

As much as he has faith in hisMasters of Mayhem, severalmembers of his team arecurrently incarcerated, and takingon an entire military base seemsboth foolish and unnecessary.

So, he has been working ona plan. He has developed aconcentrated elixir that haslimited hypnotic properties. Heis fairly certain it works, but, of

course, a trial run is in order. From an Editorial standpoint, thisis primarily because it gives theHeroes an Action Scene and setsthe stage for the final act.

So, Professor Prestige will try outhis elixir on some of the patientsat the psychiatric hospital, the same one that housesboth Frances Wurmer (see Dr.Moonlight, page 54) and Mime(see page 58), who is certainlyin need of psychiatric care.Contaminating the water supply isa given.

This will be a team-up issue, with Muse (see page 61) being

joined in her solo series by aspecial guest star, none otherthan Dr. Moonlight! In true team-up fashion, first the characterswill have to fight one another. And a hypnotic elixir will be justthe thing to get things startedon the wrong foot. The issue willstart in medias res, with Museencountering the good Dr. on oneof her patrols.

    Dr. Moonlight has been affected

by the elixir, but given his mentalmakeup, it affects him slightlydifferently than it does the otherpatients. The elixir, once givendoes have one noticeable effect:the affected individual will havewildly dilated pupils.

After the Editor manages to bringthe team together, they will havesome time in the Extended Sceneto try and begin to piece thepuzzle together.

But then they will have anotherAction Scene, as the psychiatrichospital is taking some patientsout to the local mall for an outing. The patients, led by Mime willbegin a flash mob, dancing to

Madonnas Vogue.Because ofMimes involvement, the hospitalwill request some help of thesuperheroic variety.

Two heroes, one Mime, theAction Scene shouldnt be toodifficult. But Mimes involvementshould raise some flags, as sherarely acts without Prestigebeing involved. And given theconnection to Dr. Moonlight, theHeroes should start seeing some

    of the story develop.

Professor Prestige will now stagean announcement of his upcomingtrick, he will make an airplanedisappear!

Now, the Heroes will likely havefigured out that Prestige hassomething planned, but they mayhave to put it all together.

True to her name, Mime will say

    nothing.

Now, as an Editor, here is oneof the most difficult things, andwhere CC&VF differs from othersystems, as it is designed toemulate comicbooks. The Editordoesnt want the Villains to win.It is imperative that the Heroesshow up and have a fight withthe Villains. This is why folks readcomicbooks. So, in planning thisIssue, the Editor must be fully

    aware, that the Heroes should

either figure out what is going tohappen, or, they need to be ableto show up at the last minute asthe heist is taking place.

What is the final plan? It just so

happens that one of the F-22s islocated on the bridge of the USSGeorge H.W. Bush, which justhappens to be docked in the city.Tourists will be on deck, as theNavy is allowing folks aboard fortours of the ship. Prestige knowsthis. So, after the successful trialof his elixir, he has a plan in placeto contaminate the water supplyof the carrier, and after takingover their PA and piping in thesong of his choosing (In the Navy

by the Village People), the entirecrew will find themselves unableto not dance, he and Deadeye(see page 51) will waltz in and flythe plane away.

Now, this special team-up Issuedoes have a couple conceits (andconceits are the bread and butterof comicbooks anyway), so theEditor confers with the player ofDr. Moonlight, and explains hismotivation in the first Scene,

and requests that he not use anyEditorial Control, or that at leasthe keep it to a minimum.

Dr. Moonlights notes on the firstScene: Release all the animals, doit with flair, and understand thatMuse, as Roundie, has turned onyou.

The Editor has to be sure tomention the crazed look inMoonlights eyes, and not his

    usual crazed look.

The Editor also notes that onceMoonlight is delivered his secondSetback Token, he will snap out ofthe thrall of the Elixir.

Or, if he wins, the Editor is

prepared to point Muse to thepsychiatric hospital.

Plan for as many contingenciesas possible, but do so with thefreewheeling spirit of comicbooks.Know your backstory, and adaptand adjust.

Following AlongIf you would like to see howthis plays out, read on. You willwant to reference the followingcharacters: Muse (see page 61),Dr. Moonlight (see page 54), Mime(see page 58), Professor Prestige(see page 62), Deadeye (see page51), and the Mathemagician (seepage 57).

In addition, because Dr. Moonlightis a 100-point character and hewill be teaming up with Muse, hewill need to be tweaked slightly(see pages 27 and 100).

There is a 50-point differencebetween the two characters, soMoonlight, whose highest Trait is9, will get an additional 4 pointsof EC (48 points), and with 2points left over, he decides toeliminate the Usable only onceper Scene from his BATTLE CRYTrait.

The Editor will have a pool of 8 ECfor the Issue (see page 27).

With characters all set, we areready to crack open the firstpage!

The ExampleSeated at the table are theEditor, Beth, who is playing Muse, and Marty, who is playing Dr.Moonlight. Dialogue by playersand characters will be noted here, gameplay mechanics and behind-the-curtain Editorial shenaniganswill be italics.

Editor: Okay, Muse, you areout on patrol, when somethingcatches your eye. An alarm isgoing off on the street below,

and there seems to be somesort of break-in happening at astorefront.

Beth: Well, clearly I should godown there and stop whatevershappening.

Editor: Okay, you swoop down, and see that Poppys Pets is beingbroken into, there are cages outon the sidewalk, and animals aretaking off into the street. You hear

    someone shouting inside.

Dr. Moonlight: For justice, oppressed companions, forjustice! Fear not, for Dr. Moonlightis here to free you from theseshackles of oppression.

Editor: Muse, as you aresurveying the scene, you see Dr.Moonlight jumping through thebroken window, a pet carrier ineach arm.

    Moonlight: Roundie!

Beth: Isnt he a hero? And wasntRoundie his sidekick?

    Editor: Dr. Moonlight is indeed

well-known as a hero, and theRoundie question, that is one Iwill leave unanswered for now.

Muse: Dr. Moonlight, stop! Whatare you doing?

Midnight: Roundie, I know thatyou are in the clutches of somenefarious supervillain, because ifnot, I know you would be here, helping me spread justice andfreedom to these poor caged

    animals.

Editor: Muse, you have nevermet Dr. Moonlight, but somethingseems a bit off about him.

Muse: Dr. Moonlight, Im notRoundie. Im Muse! You have toput the animals down, they mightget hurt or lost if you let themfree.

    Editor: Animals are indeed

running everywhere, Moonlighthas probably released about tenfrom what you gather.

Moonlight: Do not stand in theway of yustice, Roundie. I knowwhat machinations the forces ofevil have brought to you, I amguessing tainted jerky, but youshall not stand in my way! FORJUSTICE!

Marty: I am going to let out

    my BATTLE CRY, Linked with

SWASHBUCKLER (s) and attemptto subdue Muse.

Marty will roll 1 die, add 9 forBATTLE CRY, +3 for the LinkedSWASHBUCKLER, +4 for the

Benefit Dice of SWASHBUCKLER(see Ed. Note on page 15). Beth,of course, does not know thevalues of Moonlights attack, justthat he is using two Traits.

Editor: Muse, it looks likeMoonlight is going to Swashbuckleyou, Auto-Defend?

Beth: No. I think Ill defend usingmy SUPER-TOUGH and FLIGHT (s)

Editor: Ok, roll em. And youdont have to declare yourdefense until after the attack.

Marty rolls one d12, and gets a7 to which he adds 9+3+4, for atotal of 23!

Beth defends, rolling 3 dice (10,4, 4), keeping the 10 to which sheadds 6+3: 19!

    Editor: Muse, Moonlight leaps at

you, shouting out For Justice!and attempts to subdue you. Youlaunch yourself into the air, tryingto fly out of the way, relying onyour SUPER-TOUGHness if he doesmanage to hit. Moonlight bouncesoff a couple awnings, and bringsthe pommel of his rapier squarelydown on the back of your head, you fall to the ground. Have youbeen subdued?

    Beth records one Setback Token

    for this Action Scene.

    Beth: My turn?

Editor: Yup. And you could evengo twice if you wanted, whichbecause there are only two ofyou, would give him that same

    opportunity (see pages 80-82).

Beth: Well, to start, Im going totry to go right through him withNON-CORPOREALNESS and thenturn around and hit him with mySUPER-STRENGTH(s).

Marty: No Auto Defend for me!

Beth rolls one die (5) and adds 8+3, for a total of 16.

Marty: I will defend with moreSWASHBUCKLing and DERRING-DO(s), and of course, I LIKE TOJUMP AROUND.

    Marty rolls 2 dice (9, 1) adding 5+3+1+2: 20!

Editor: Muse, you zoom throughMoonlight, who looks a bitconfused, leaps up, springingoff the wall, as you bring yourfist down to strike him, he is no

    longer standing where he was.

Moonlight: Roundie, you passthrough me as if possessed bydemon magic!

Editor: Beth, do you want to goagain, or let Moonlight go (seepages 80-82)?

    Beth: He can go.

At the end of Round 1,

    Moonlight has Used: BATTLE

CRY, SWASHBUCKLER (twice),DERRING-DO, and LIKES TO JUMPAROUND. After each Usage, Martywould record that on his Usagesheet or index card(see pages 46and 155).

Muse has Used: SUPER-TOUGH,FLIGHT, NON-CORPOREALNESS,and SUPER-STRENGTH, inaddition, she has taken oneSetback Token in this ActionScene.

Moonlight: Roundie, you mustsnap out of this. Fight it!

Editor: There is really somethingnot right about Dr. Moonlight,

Muse. Youve heard stories, sure, but this goes way beyond whatyou have heard.

Marty: I draw my RAPIER andface-off against my former ally.I will be using my BATTLE CRY,REPARTEE(s), RAPIER(s), andDERRING-DO(s).

    Beth: I use my Auto-Defend.

    Marty records the Usages, Beth

records the Auto-Defend. No diceare rolled.

Moonlight: For Justice, Roundie!Fight this infernal hold on you.You are the second greatest heroin the land.

Editor: Moonlight draws hisrapier up, gives his movingspeech to his former sidekick, now turned ghost-like and evil, and lunges at Muse. Muse shakes

    her head, confused, and turns

non-corporeal, which meansMoonlight goes right through herand stumbles to the ground. Beth, your action.

Beth: I need to snap him out of

this. Im SMART(s) and I figurehe wont think Im Roundie if Iuse my REVEALING COSTUME todistract him.

Marty shakes his head, smiling. He is not using his Auto-Defend.

Beth rolls one die (8) adding 8+1:17!

Marty: I will attempt to ignoreRoundies new, no doubt evil-

influenced form by averting myeyes and (Marty looks over hischaracter sheet, and looks for aTrait that might be appropriate)leaping out of the way, with ahalf-hearted cry of For Justice!

Marty is using BATTLE CRY (whichhas two Detriment Dice) andLIKES TO JUMP AROUND (whichgives one Benefit Die) and rolls2 dice (7, 2), keeping the worst:2+9+1: 12!

    Marty records a Setback Token.

Editor: Beth, are you lettingMoonlight go, or you want todouble up and act again?

Beth: Im going to do a doubleaction. Im DETERMINED(s), I knowI can do this, SUPER-STRONG(s)and I know MARTIAL ARTS(s). Imgoing to knock this out of him. And,I am Pushing (see page 89).

Beth is acting at the end of around, and to lead off a round, which means Moonlight will beable to do the same, if he sochooses.

Marty: For Justice? Marty is notAuto-Defending.

    Example of Play

Beth rolls two dice, for SUPER-STRENGTH (11, 9) and oneadditional die for Pushing (5)keeping the better two of thethree (11+ 9), and adding8+1+1: 30!

And, she takes a Setback Tokenfor Pushing.

    Moonlight: En garde, Roundie!

Marty: SWASHBUCKLER, withsome DERRING-DO(s), andRAPIER(s), I am going to knockaway her brutish attack withstyle and grace!

    SWASHBUCKLER gets +2 Linked

with both DERRING-DO(s) andRAPIER(s), and DERRING-DO(s)has 2 Benefit Dice, which willgive his roll an additional+4.

So, before any rolling:5+3+3+2+2+4=19 pluswhatever Marty rolls, which, sadly, for Dr. Moonlight inthis case is a 1. So, his totalis 20, which is more than hisThreshold (see page 76), so itis lights out for the good doctor,

    unless he spends some EC.

Marty: I spend EC, so I dontgo down (see page 28).

Marty records his secondSetback Token, and subtractsthe 2 EC from his pool of 6(giving him 4 still).

Moonlight: Roundie, why doyou strike me so? Quickly, wemust rescue these animals and

    get them back into Poppys.

    Puddinhead! Puddinhead!

Editor: Moonlight no longer seemsto have that crazed look in his eyes.

    Marty: Moonlight rushes to get

as many of the freed pets aspossible, giving them sloppy

smooches, and petting them, asmile on his face the whole time.

    Editor: This is your action,Moonlight?

Marty: Yes, I go first in the nextround, and work at rounding upthe animals.

Moonlight: Roundie, you lookas beautiful as ever, now, please, cover yourself, and help out here.

Beth: Muse still seems a littleweirded out, but helps him roundup the animals.

Muse: Im not Roundie, Im Muse.

Marty: Moonlight is silent, leapingaround, acrobatically rounding upanimals.

Editor: Okay, after about fiveminutes, the two of you roundup all the animals, secure thestorefront, and the police show up.

Police Officer: Muse. Dr.Moonlight. What seems to be theproblem here?

Moonlight: Roundie and I wereon patrol when we came acrossthis storefront. Someone hadbroken in and released some ofthe animals. We quickly went intoaction rounding them up.

The Action Scene is over, now wemove seamlessly to the ExtendedScene, should either characterwant to Use any Traits.

Muse: Youll see all the animals

are accounted for, but... have therebeen any strange activities lately?People ingesting hallucinogens orsomething like that...?

Officer: Not that I am aware of.

Moonlight: What are youthinking, Roundie? Your deductivepowers pale to mine, but thereare times of course when youstrike upon a kernel of an idea.

Beth: Muse rolls her eyes, a littleannoyed.

Marty: Dr. Moonlight reachesinto his tunic and takes out apiece of beef jerky and offers it to

    Roundie.

Muse: Well, Dr. Moonlight, wherewere you before you came here?

Moonlight: I do not know whatyou mean. We were on patrol. Icame across this situation, andalerted you, and we proceeded toround up these poor defenselessanimals.

    Beth: Im SMART (s)and good

at COMPUTER STUFF, could Ipossibly do a quick search to seeif Moonlight was up to anythingbefore I ran into him?

Beth rolls a die (6) and adds5+2+1, for a total of 14. Sherecords both Usages for theExtended Scene.

The Editor has determined thatMuse is using some Traits, andwhat she is looking for isnt too

difficult to find, so the Editor willTom Martin

    share some info:

Editor: Ok, Muse, you take outyour smartphone and do a quicksearch. The main thing youdiscover about Moonlight, is that

it is pretty well known amongstthe supers population that he isFrances Wurmer, a patient at thepsychiatric hospital.

Moonlight: Perhaps, good officer, you can contact Poppy andlet him know that his pets aresafe and that Dr. Moonlight andRoundie have been here to insureeverything is okay.

Officer: Do you think this was a

    supervillain, Dr. Moonlight?

Moonlight: Who knows whatevil lurks in the hearts ofsupervillains? We must be off!Roundie, have you uncovered anymore crimes on your Moonlightcommunicator?

Muse: Sure, Moonlight, lets go, Ithink Ive got something.

    Moonlight: Farewel, officer. Here,

have a piece of jerky. I knowthat it is not quite a jelly donut, but everyone loves jerky. Come,Roundie, let us be off into thedarkness of the city, to strike fearinto the hearts of supervillains!

Editor: The Officer takes the jerkywith a puzzled look on his face.

    Officer: Ok.

Beth: And once we get away from

the officer, I will ask if we can

head to the hospital that he wasat. It seems as good a lead asany.

Moonlight: What do you mean?A lead? Into the break-in at

Poppys? Surely, there is villainyout there, should we not leave thepatients at the hospital alone?

Muse: I think somethinghappened at the hospital.

    Moonlight: I

Marty: I am activating my twoComplications (Certifiably Insane,Easily Flustered) and Moonlightruns off into the darkness.

    Moonlight: For Justice, Roundie!

Beth: Ugh, I guess I have to goafter him.

Editor: Moonlight takes off intothe darkness, you try and followhim, but he is able to elude you.By activating a Complication,Marty has added a point of EC tohis pool.

Beth: Then should I go ahead tothe hospital?

Editor: Sure, if that is what youwant to do.

    Beth: I will do that.

Editor: Ok, you take off to thehospital. You just going to walk inthe front door?

Beth: Can I fly around, look for

    anything out of the ordinary?

Editor: Sure, Use some Traits, tellme what you are Using, and wellsee what happens.

Beth: FLIGHT(s) and SMART,looking for anything usual.

Beth rolls a die (10), marks offthe Usages, and adds 5+2+3: 20!

The Editor knows that it isthe water that has beencontaminated. Prestige has donea good job of covering thosetracks, he doesnt want anythingto lead back to the psych hospital,he just picked the one where Dr.Moonlight happens to spend hisdays. Comicbooks have a way or

    working out like that.

So, Prestige has THE BIG REVEAL,CRIMINAL GENIUS, and ALWAYSHAS A PLAN, which will makethe Difficulty to find out anythingabout the water: 11+5+3+6= 25.Muse did not beat 25, and isntreally looking in the right way, flying wont do much for her. So,the Editor decides to not giveMuse a Setback Token, but she isstill Using her Traits. And, maybe

she will find out something aboutMoonlight, as 20 is a good result.

Editor: You fly around thehospital, keeping your eyespeeled for anything unusual. Asyou are up on the rooftop, yousee a small satchel hidden awayin a corner.

Beth: I want to check it out.

Editor: You swoop down to the

rooftop, and pick up the satchel.

Looking through it, you findnothing more than ordinary streetclothes, several packages of beefjerky, and a patient ID braceletthat reads Frances Wurmer.

Beth: Hmmm... Moonlight mightwant this stuff back. Can I goinside, maybe, and look around?

Editor: Sure, you could go inthe front door, or go intangible, whatever you want to do.

    Beth: Intangible.

Editor: Mark it off, and makea roll, assuming you are beingsneaky and stealthy, if you just

want to get inside, no worries.

Beth: I want to be sneaky, so Illuse my MARTIAL ARTS(s) too.

Beth rolls a die (4) and adds 8+1:13.

Recall, the Difficulty to find outanything about the water is 25,the Editor determines she is onthe right path, but her roll is justnot very good. She is sneaking

around, but not really using herintelligence in any way. Insteadof giving her a Setback Token, the Editor just keeps stringing heralong, letting her Use her Traits.

Editor: Very well, grasshopper. You pass through the door andstart roaming the halls, silently, hiding in the walls. Are youlooking for anything in particular?

Beth: Are people in their rooms?

If not, is there some noise

somewhere, or indication of wherethey are?

Editor: Patients are in theirrooms, nurses, orderlies, andhospital staff are still up.

Beth: So nothing weird is goingon?

Editor: Well, it is a mentalhospital, patients are in theirbeds, nurses and orderlies aredoing their jobs, nothing seems tobe out of the ordinary. (to Marty)Marty, Moonlight can re-enter thepicture any time you want.

Marty: Thanks. I have a plan.

Beth: Well, since I cant seemto find anything else, I guess Illleave.

Editor: Ok, doing anything elsethis fine evening?

Beth: I guess Ill fly out and goon patrol?

    Editor: You got it. Moonlight?

Marty: Well, I would deduce thatRoundie took my stuff, so I willcontinue to patrol, keeping to theshadows, and after a couple hoursretire for the evening and goabout my day.

Editor: Muse, your evening patrolis relatively uneventful for therest of the evening. Are you goingto try and get some sleep?

    Beth: I guess so.

The Editor jots down a quick noteand passes it to Marty. The notesays: Frances is out enjoying aday trip with the fellow patientsat the hospital, a trip to the mall, when, while dining, every patient,

and most of the staff break into avery synchronized dance routine. While this is indeed strange, even stranger is that it is led byone of your fellow patients, whohas donned the costume of thatnefarious villain Mime!

Marty: After ducking out andchanging into my costume, I willcall Roundie on the Moonlightcommunicator.

Moonlight: Roundie! Comequickly to the mall. Somethingvillainous is happening. And theyare giving away free samples ofsesame chicken!

Editor: Muse, as Katie, you aregoing about your normal routine,it is around lunchtime when yoursmartphone rings, the number isnot identified.

    Beth: Ill pick it up.

Editor: Sorry for stealing yourthunder, Moonlight, gotta get theducks in a row.

Moonlight: Roundie! The foodcourt at the mall, somethingvillainous is happening, and theyare giving away delicious sesamechicken samples. Come quickly! For Justice!

    Muse: Right, for...Justice...

Beth: And I will fly there asap.

Editor: You change into yourcostume and zoom to the mall. Asyou approach the food court, yousee quite a scene. Patients and

staff from the psychiatric hospitalare doing a perfectly synchronizeddance routine to MadonnasVogue, which is being piped inthrough the malls PA system, thedance being led by none otherthan Mime. Moonlight, you seeMuse swoop into the mall.

Moonlight: Roundie, no time forsesame chicken now, well getsome later, but we must stop thisvillainy. I shall, to Mime, attack.

I expect you can handle crowdcontrol.

Marty: And Moonlight will leapinto action, now that his faithfulsidekick is here. I will start outwith my BATTLE CRY, of course, and DERRING-DO. Hopefully, thepresence alone of Dr. Moonlightwill strike fear into Mime.

    Editor: Mime is not Auto-Defending.

Marty will roll one die (3) and add9+3, for a total of 15!

Editor: Mime sees Dr. Moonlightleaping at her, and starts miminga protective box around her(UNSETTLING) (SILENT(s)) whilegiving the very handsome Dr.Moonlight a FLIRTY(s) smile.

    Moonlight: Curses!

    Editor rolls 3 dice (4, 4, 12)

keeping the best (12), which willdouble the Primary Trait (5) so hewill add 10+3+3 to his roll of 12:28!

    Editor: Your cry for justice

seems to go unheard, as you arecharmed by her seductive smile, and unable to break through hermimed box. Who goes next Marty.

    Marty: Roundie, of course.

    Editor: Muse, youre up.

Beth: Alright, Im going to fly inusing FLIGHT(s) and sock that nogood Mime in the face with mySUPER-STRENGTH and MARTIAL

ARTS(s) for good measure. I wantSUPER STRENGTH to be my base.

    Editor: No Auto-Defend.

Beth rolls one die (10) and adds8+3+1: 22!

Editor: Mime still has her boxup to protect her (UNSETTLING,SILENT(s)) and will leap out ofthe way, taking the box with her(HEIGHTENED AGILITY(s)).

Editor rolls two dice (5, 6) keepingthe 6 and adds 5+3+3: 17! Mimewill take a Setback Token. But,her highest Trait is only UsableWhen the Chips Are Down, somaybe this is her plan? It is nowMimes turn to go, and she couldact twice if she wanted to.

Editor: Muse flies at Mime, wuxiastyle, and pulls back deliveringa punch strong enough to put a

hole in any wall. Mime holds her

hands up and falls to the groundelegantly, and slowly stands, miming the action, and wipes thetrickle of blood from her mouth, tilts her head and smiles.

    Beth: Did she get hurt?

Editor: Yes, you gave her a

Setback Token. Mimes turn togo now. She will Push (see page89), and take out her UNIQUEGUN. She lines up the plasticgun as if taking very careful aim,and counts off with her fingers

one, two, three before making aSaving Private Ryan run for Muse, leaping through the air and takingaim. She is Using HEIGHTENEDAGILITY, UNIQUE GUN(s), andSILENT(s). Muse, you alreadyused your Auto-Defend this Issue,so, youre gonna take this one.

Editor rolls three dice (2, 4, 11),and will keep the best two (4+11)and adds 5+3+3: 26! Muse willtake a 2ndSetback Token at the

resolution of this action, and thenshe will determine who will leadoff the action in the next round.

    Beth: Ill defend with SUPER-TOUGH, DETERMINED(s) andNON-CORPOREALNESS(s).

Beth rolls three dice (7, 7, 12),and will add 6+3+1+6 again (thePrimary Trait is doubled): 28. NoSetback Token for Muse.

Editor: Mime is starting to get abit irritated, and she will lead offthis round. Her bullet flies rightthrough the ghost-like Muse, andshe lands on her feet, and tiltsher head to the side, and mimesthinking of an idea by tapping hertemple. She lets out a silent roarof anger, and rips up one of thetables, and proceeds to run acrossthe food court, leaping off thebig sculpture in the middle andcharging at Muse. She is using

    PSYCHOPATHIC, UNSETTLING(s),

    and SUPER-STRENGTH(s).

Editor rolls one die (9) and adds:9+3+3: 24!

    Beth: Ill defend with NON-

    CORPOREALNESS, SUPER-STRENGTH(s), and FLIGHT(s).

Beth rolls one die (7) and adds8+3+3: 21! Muse takes a SetbackToken.

Editor: Muse, you fly straight atMime as she is coming at you, flying right through the hugehanging sculptural mobile hangingover the food court, hoping todisrupt her attack, you reach up

to catch the table as she swingsit at you, but you are not quitefast enough, as the table connectssquarely with you, knocking youto the ground. Moonlight, it isyour turn.

Moonlight: Roundie, I appreciateyou taking on this villain alone, but we must work together.Come, stand-up, and together, weshall share the glory, and will beable to enjoy our sesame chicken

in peace. Quickly, eat this jerky!

Marty: Moonlight is going to swingacross the mobile, grabbing Museup off the ground, and getting herto standing, somersault throughthe air, unsheathe his rapier andbouncing across three tables, stopping for a quick sip from a fairmaidens soda along the way, bringhis righteous steel down upon thissilent nemesis. SWASHBUCKLER,DERRING-DO(s), RAPIER(s), and

    ROUNDIE(s).

Editor: Go for it. (The Editorknows that Marty is Linkingup a lot of Traits in a veryadvantageous way, but is notmeta-gaming, and therefore notAuto-Defending).

Marty rolls two dice (3,8) adding 5+3+1+2+2+4(SWASHBUCKLER-5, DERRING-DO Link +3, RAPIER Link +1,Situational Bonuses for both +2apiece, and two Benefit Dice forRoundie= +4): 25!

Editor: Mime will defendwith HEIGHTENED AGILITY,ENHANCED-ENDURANCE(s), andFLIRTY(s).

Editor rolls two dice (3, 9) (3 dicefrom AGILITY, plus one DetrimentDie from FLIRTY) adding 5+3+3:20! Mime takes her 3rdSetbackToken.

Editor: As you swing throughthe air, Mime blows you a kiss, and she attempts to leap out ofthe way, your rapier delivers agood blow, cutting her black tunicslightly. She mimes her heart

beating, and bats her eyes, andgestures one tear falling down hercheek. She seems genuinely sadthat her crush, Dr. Moonlight, hasstruck her so.

Editor: HmmmHow about this,Ill let you do it if, you give up thisaction, and, you are at the endof the round, so you could act atthe top of the next round if youlike. So, from a game perspective, sure, but it is only +3. Your call.I do like the idea, it will just takesome time.

Beth: What about throwing acomputer at her? Would thatcount?

Editor: Ha! No, that is prettymuch some sort of strength-basedsomething. How about youassist Moonlight with an attack, ifhe wants, and you can use yourcomputer skillz to help him out?

Beth: Sure, Id like to assist

    Moonlight!

Editor: I am assuming you willhave him start off the next round,so you can assist him. Moonlight,Roundie is looking something upon the Moonlight communicator, and thinks she has found Mimesweakness.

Moonlight: We shall dine withjerky and sesame chicken.Excellent work, Roundie!

Marty: I am using my DERRING-DO, SWASHBUCKLER(s),RAPIER(s), ROUNDIE(s) of course, and my BATTLE CRY!

Editor: Ok, Beth, you need to

get a Trait total up to at least 9 toassist. What are you Using (seepage 89)?

    Beth: SUPER-STRENGTH,DETERMINED, and COMPUTERSTUFF.

Editor: Muse, you start lookingon your smartphone, folks aredancing all around you, stillvoguing as it were, Mime hasto have some weakness. You

think youve found something.Moonlight! you cry out, preparing to launch him intothe air for an acrobatic attack.Moonlight bounds across the foodcourt, launched into the air byMuses strength, you flip, turn, flourish.

Marty is preparing to roll dice, awhole bunch of them, adding inlots of bonuses.

Editor: And. Mime Auto-Defends. Moonlight slams intoher, and she jerks her head back, looking shocked that she wasattacked, she dusts herself off,and that is that!

    Marty: Curses!

    Beth: Darn!

Editor: Marty, you acted first inthe round, who is up next?

    Marty: Muse, you want this?

    Beth: Let Mime go first.

Editor: All right. She squintsher eyes, rips two tables out of

the floor, juggles them once ortwice, and tilts her head at eachof you, pointing with one handas she is juggling these twotables, and taps her head, as ifshe just had a brilliant idea. Sheis PSYCHOPATHIC and using herSUPER-STRENGTH(s), she is alsogoing to spend one point of EC torefresh UNSETTLING(s), and sheis Pushing, which will give her 3Setback Tokens, and she is goingto attack both of you with the

tables: Moonlight, she will just beslamming one at you, and Muse, she will throw the other from herjuggling routine.

    Marty: Uh-oh.

Editor rolls one three dice andwill keep two (1, 3, 10) and adds9+3+3+4: 32!

Explanation: PSYCHOPATHIC has2 dice, and is 9.

UNSETTLING is +3 Link value, and has 3 dice, so +4 (seeEd. Note on page 15). SUPER-STRENGTH is +3 Link Value.

Attacking two opponents adds aDetriment Die (see page 88)

Pushing and taking a 3rdSetbackToken gives 2 extra dice to theroll, keeping an extra one for theresult.

So, we would have 2 dice, minus1 die, add 2 dice, and keep the 2highest.

    Ouch.

Marty: Wow. Um. Im gonna takethe hit, and spend 2 points of ECso I take one Setback Token andavoid an Insta-Defeat.

Recall, Moonlight is a 100-pointcharacter, with extra EC, so this isnot a bad call.

    Editor: Beth?

Beth: Well, I only have oneSetback Token, and I think I

can make it to my Threshold atleast. Im going to use NON-CORPOREALNESS, SUPERTOUGH(s), and FLIGHT(s).

Beth rolls one die (7) and adds8+3+3+2: 23! Beth takes herSecond Setback Token.

Editor: You have learned well, grasshopper. Your punch connectswith Mime, and she is thrownacross the food court.

Moonlight: Great show, Roundie!Prepare that villain for theauthorities, while I secure ussome sesame chicken. And weshould be sure to look into whyall the hospitals patients saw fitto do a synchronized dance, dontyou think?

Marty: And Moonlight pats Museon the shoulder, handing her apiece of beef jerky, and goesover to the free sesame chickensamples, asking for two.

Editor: It doesnt refresh, we justcontinue the Extended Scene.Mime looks very sad as you

deliver her to the authorities. Now, Mime is here, which mightwell mean Professor Prestige isinvolved. As you are reviewing themall security tapes, everythingseemed very normal, until thepatients and hospital staff alljumped up in unison. There isno sound on the security tapes,so you would guess that is whenthe song started playing, and twofigures run off, maybe they wereboth patients. Mime comes back

on-screen and starts leading thedance, and

Moonlight: Thank you againRoundie. I was deep undercover,as when you mentioned thehospital I knew something mustbe up. So I gained entrance tothe hospital and was able to moveabout undetected.

Editor: And Dr. Moonlight entersthe scene on the surveillance

Muse: Sure, Dr. Moonlight. Imglad that you were there to checkit out. But I think this is part of abigger plot.

    Moonlight: Prestige!

Marty: Moonlight holds up hisfist, staring at the sky.

Muse: Um, exactly right. I thinkProfessor Prestige did somethingto the patients and staff... maybelast night?

Editor: Muse, you did notice thatthe patients had that same crazedlook in their eyes that Moonlightdid when you encountered him.

Moonlight: Nefarious! Perhapsthe next song will be somethingmore appropriate for dancingMuse, a nice foxtrot perhaps.

Marty: Moonlight bows and holdshis hand out to Muse.

Beth: She takes his hand veryconfused.

Muse: The patients... had a very

    unusual look in their eyes.

Marty: Moonlight takes your handand begins a foxtrot, looking intoyour eyes.

Moonlight: As do you beautifulMuse, but that is the look of love,I have seen it many times before.

Editor: The music playing overthe loudspeaker is just piped inmuzak right now.

Muse: Um, no, no, I dont thinkits love... I have a boyfriend.

Moonlight: Then perhaps we willjust be lovers.

    Beth: She is very red.

Muse: No. I have a boyfriend. Ithink we should figure out whereProfessor Prestige is.

Moonlight: Yes, our love willhave to wait until then. Finishyour chicken, and we shall be off.FOR JUSTICE!

Beth: She covers her face andheads out... but not before eating

    the chicken.

    Editor: Where to?

Marty: Hospital? Should we lookfor anything at the mall?

Beth: I dont think so...it seemslike the plan was just to create abig distraction maybe?

Moonlight: I hate mimes. Theyupset me.

Muse: Me too. Lets go to thehospital, then.

Moonlight: I think it best we splitup, Roundie.

    Muse: Um, why is that?

Moonlight: Because, Dr.Moonlight must stay in theshadows, his ear to the ground, feeling the heartbeat of the city,

sniffing for the scent of villainy.

Marty: Moonlight is going to headback into the mall. Can I checkout the mall PA system? I dontreally have any appropriate Traits, but maybe there is something

    obvious.

    Editor: Muse, what are youdoing?

Beth: Going to the hospital tolook around for clues.

Editor: Tell me what you mightwant to do, look for, anything likethat? Moonlight, you do not findanything too obvious in the PAsystem, though it does seem like

the Madonna song playing wasnot part of the normal routine.

Marty: Ive got it. I am going touse ROUNDIE.

    The Editor cocks his head.

Moonlight: I know the answer isobvious, but I must think like mydim-witted sidekick-in-trainingRoundie, how would Prestige foolhim here?

    Marty rolls three dice (4, 7, 8)and adds 1: 9!

is certainly enough to get someinformation.

Editor: Roundie might noticethe chalk dust obviously left byPrestige, no wait, not Prestige, the Mathemagician! That nerdmust be involved in this.

Beth: Well, I have FLIGHTand Im SMART(s) andDETERMINED(s), I want to flyaround, looking for clues to thewhereabouts of Prestige, orwhat he might have done at thehospital.

    Beth rolls a die (7) and adds6+1+1: 15

Editor determines that Prestigeis keeping his next move secret, but not as secret as the water, so,THE BIG REVEAL 11+6= 17. But,he is leaving an obvious trail ofbreadcrumbs, on his terms! So,no Setback Token for a failed roll, the Editor smiles inside, knowingthat although Muse failed, it is allpart of Prestiges plan, so no needto let her know that she failed.

Editor: You fly around, looking forclues. What you do notice is thatthe staff is talking about Mime.

Staff: She seemed to be doingso well? Do you think she was

involved or just affected like therest of us, by whatever it was?

Editor: Additionally, as you areflying around, something catchesyour eye. Plastered up all overthe city (freshly plastered mindyou, judging by the glue that isstill damp) are signs announcingProfessor Prestiges next big trick:

Sign: See Professor Prestige dothe impossible, as he makes an

    airplane disappear!

Editor: Moonlight, you findsimilar signs around the city.

Moonlight: Ive got to contactRoundie. Ill use the Moonlightcommunicator: Roundie, Prestigeis at it again. The Mathemagicianwas at the mall, and now I havecome across signs advertising hisnext trick, he will be making aplane disappear!

Muse: I saw those signs, too.Lets get going!

    Moonlight: For Justice!

Beth: Does it say anything aboutwhat kind of plane or where?

    Editor: Nope.

Moonlight: Prestige wants to puton a show, he wants us to find

Marty: Im going to Use ROUNDIEagain, and push.

Editor: All right, Moonlightstudies the signs, and realizesthat the USS George H.W. Bushis docked in the city, and as anaircraft carrier, certainly hasaircraft aboard.

    Moonlight: Roundie, Prestige will

    strike at the aircraft carrier!

Muse: Ok, lets go there then!

    Moonlight: For Justice!

Editor: The two of you make yourway to the aircraft carrier, it isteeming with tourists, snappingpictures, sailors going about theirbusiness. Even a local TV cameracrew is here, probably workingon a feel good feature for the
