1. Doing the Dharma Polka #1

Open your eyes it’s a bright shining world, doing the dharma polka,Open your heart, there’s a voice telling you, you’re in life’s karioka.Open your ears all the sounds of the earth sing you a song of heaven,To you these things are given, doing the dharma polka.Buddhas tell us, don’t live in the future or past.In this moment, your life, it is really a gas.Just be grateful, for the life that’s flowing through you,Take pleasure in the moment’s passing treasure,And you’ll find that peace and joy are here right now with you.Quiet your mind, you’ll find love shining through,Doing the dharma polka,Focus your mind, there’s a voice telling youYou haven’t gone bananas.Shake loose the dust off your brain and your heart,The winds of grace are blowing, Around you they’re enfolding, doing the dharma polka. --to the tune of Pennsylvania Polka, Lee and Manners

2. Doing the Dharma Polka #2

Om, I hear a mantra and my heart’s all aglow,Already let go, deep in the flow.Om, I hear a sutra and vast being says wow,You’re with the One right now.

The words of wisdom turn us inwards where the words are left behind,There is a source of deep love silence in the center of the mind, soOm, and Hari Krishna, Shalom, Gate Gate,Yawah Allah, Jesu Christe, Hung, and Vajra Guru, Bajarange Hanuman,Sing all the sacred songs right now.In that immanent love silenceIn the center of the mind,That God world and Self are all OneIs the treasure that you’ll find, so‘Buddha Nature,’ ‘True Self,’‘Pure Mind,’ ‘The Unknown,’‘Rigpa’ and ‘The Timeless,’‘The One,’ ‘Your True Home,’Every School of Mystics gives it a new nameAnd when they are all forgottenIt is shining right here plain,It’s ‘pure being’ that remains,OH, we just gave it another name. --to the tune of Lichtensteiner Polka, Koetscher &Lindt

3. The Happy Dharma Bum

I am a happy dharma bum, I only have one crumb,That morsel so enriches me, I’m always having fun.

Chorus: I am free, I am free, from the thoughts That defined me, me, me, me, ha, ha, ha. I am free, in the sea, of the universal energy.

I’ll always be a dharma gal, Though traveling far or wide,I’ve left behind my excess bags, In true self to abide.I am a happy dharma man, Mind’s wanderings have ceased,Once hid beneath the vagrant mind, The true self’s now released.ChorusWe’ll always keep a dharma heart, We’ve signed and sealed a lease,And entering in our true home, Our real address is peace. We are the happy dharma folk, Unbound we’ve awoke,Though in the world of time and space, We live the cosmic joke.Chorus 2, It’s not far, it is near,

It is clear, it is here, here, here, here, ha, ha. Shhhhh your thoughts, feel your fears, And true happiness appears. --to the tune of The Happy Wanderer, Ridge & Moller (Words by Michael Attie and Phil O’Connell)

4. Cosmic Wedding March

Of course the usual wedding, union of a man and woman, man and man, woman and woman, etc. is wonderful. But let’s not forget the cosmic wedding, our joyous union with everything in the universe: the source and its manifestation in all form.

When marching down the wedding aisle,Put all your thoughts in single file, When random they the world divide,The Taoist Sages say best in the one reside.

Under the wedding canopy,The saints and sages all agree,The union of a man and wife,Is fine but also make your troth with all of life.

Within the air we lightly sip,Resides the ticket for a trip,To take the love that’s on the runAnd make our vows with everything and everyone.Chorus 1: Expectant for exciting places, You won’t know the grace pure space is. While waiting for the Magic Froggies great kiss, Don’t miss, the bliss of pure awareness.Upon your union with the one,Will shine the light of many suns,Your God of choice will you anoint,The Hindu Rishis all agree upon this point.

When dancing at the wedding party,Forget your worn and tired old story,Move wild along the Hora line,Hasidic Rabbis say you’ll find true peace of mind.

When on your cosmic honeymoon,All things they seem to be in tune,Small parts of nature’s symphony,The Dalai Lama says no separate entities.Chorus #2: Guru Ramana says all light field of open space is,

5. Non-Dual Drinking Song #1

At the center of our thinking mnd is our grasping ego:wanting, needing, fearing, hoping, planning, etc. For some relief and to find real happiness, we need to drown our brains. Unfortunately, we often choose the wrong substance and perhaps experince some temporary happiness which is gone the next morning. When we learn to drown in non-dual awareness, we experience unlimited happiness and feel even better the next day. To get in the mood, please sing the Non-Dual Drinking Songs.

Have a mug, from the jug at the non-dual pub,For the mind, thinking mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine, mine. The poor mind, thinking mine, talking mine, worrying mine,The poor mind has no time to unwind.Day and night, night and day, all the time,The poor mind’s running round with the mine, mine, mine.Night or day, day or night, just one time,If it’d only let go of the mine.‘Cause with no mine, the mind it gets lost in the shine,In the shine everything, everything is fine.

--to the tune of Drinking Song from La Traviata, G. Verdi

6. Non-Dual Drinking Song #2

Drink, Drink, Drink, with one voice we drink a toast to the non-dual mind.Drunk, Drunk, Drunk, the inward turned mind gets drunk on the bliss it does find.

Eternal silence is at the mind’s core,We always knew, love is new, life’s not a bore. One delirious drop you’ll find, Is just enough to blow your mind.Merge, merge, merge everyone,Purge, purge all separation,Surge, surge--Oh Ocean of Love, Take a deep dive and your lifewill be fun. --to the tune of Drinking Song from the Student Prince, S. Romberg

7. Theme Song of the Don’t Worry Zendo

For many years not many people came to the Don’t Worry Zendo. Feeling rather lonely I went to an agent. He berated me, “This is Hollywood, you need to promote, a jingle to plaster the airwaves, and nothing about pain in the legs or sitting with boredom but bright lights, premiers, stars, fun.” Unfortunately we have a country where many people believe that the world has to be destroyed before they can find complete happiness, they have even elected our president who seems to be proceeding on such a course. If someone will donate a million dollars I will be able to plaster the Fox network and Disney Channel with this theme song. If we can fill up the Zendos and meditation halls and enough people learn to experience that complete happiness is only right here and now in this beautiful world, then maybe the world will not have to be destroyed. Don’t Worry---It is the Zendo that comes rolling along. You’re early---With lots of sitting and a dance and a song.No flurry---It is the Zendo that goes marching around. No hurry---It is the Zendo that goes out on the town.Chorus: Right here X-rayed by love--- No need to go above. Just let that love ray in--- Don’t worry ‘bout no sin.

cd notes final.indd 10 8/24/07 12:17:21 PM

It’s all right---It is the Zendo where you get in the beam. Not uptight---Cause it’s the Zendo where your brain is wiped clean. So don’t fight---It is the Zendo having fun all the time. And go light--Cause it’s the Zendo where your out of your mind.ChorusIt’s all right, not uptight, so don’t fight, and go light,You’re early, no hurry, no flurry, Don’t worry, Don’t Worry, DON’T WORRY.

8. The Loving School Anthem

I’m studying at a loving school. It’s not a reading or a writing school. When you get out of there you be such a fool,Cause it’s a loving school, yes it’s a loving school.

And in this school they got a loving class,It’s not a history or algebra class,You never fail but you always pass, In the loving class, yes it’s a loving class.

And in this school they got a love theatre,It’s not a mirror for your ego creator,Shoots up your backbone like a light elevator,It’s a joy elating, escalating love theatre.

Bridge: Things you never thought but always knew Awaiting you when you enroll, In the loving school. There your worrying mind runs out of juice,

You’ve joined the universal truce,You’re God’s happy goose. All the things of your life arriving just in time, Must be some sort of sign, You’re now a PhD,You’ve joined the faculty, In Love’s University.

And in this school they got a love machine,Not a typing or an adding machine. It’s the machine that makes everything,And it’s a love machine, yes it’s a love machine.

And in this school they got some loving teachers,Not just German, French or Spanish teachers,And we’re all each others loving teachers,Yes we’re loving teachers, yes were loving teachers.

And this whole wide world’s a loving school,Not just a job and making money school,And it’s the school where we’re never through,And it’s a loving school, yes it’s a loving school.

And this whole wide world’s a loving you,Just keep your mind still in the cyclones twirlThen this whole world is a loving you,In the loving school in this loving world.

9. Victory March of the Spiritual Warriors #1

The usual victory march is displaying booty, slaves, oil, etc. from conquered neighbouring tribes, states. As people evolve spiritually they turn inwards to find happiness. When spirituality ripens, they stop attempting to grasp anything, internal or external, but just affirm that happiness is always present and the very nature of being /awareness. Then they are spiritual warriors and their life becomes a victory march.

1, (2) We’ve won, We’ve conquered all border (boundary) lines within the mind,No borders (boundaries) are defined,Then true peace (love) we will find(right here) in the mind.chorus:For the spiritual victory, Lose your mind in the mystery,For the spiritual victory, victory, victory. For the spiritual victory,Lose your mind in the mysteryLose your mind in the mystery, mystery, mystery.3. We’ve won, We’ve crossed the finish line, Long before, before the race begun, Long before it’s begun, We have won.4. It’s here, Anywhere that we go, The victory, the victory is near, It is clear, it is near, It is right here.chorus5. New Love Sounds the triumphal call

For the one, The one whose guns are done, She is done, he is done, Guns are done. 6. True love, Places the victory crown, Upon the head, The head of one who’s one, He is one, she is one, One has won. --to the tune of Victory March from Aida, G. Verdi

10. Spiritual Victory March #2

1. Don’t give me a man who’s a battering ram, Who will butt till he breaks down the door. Don ‘t give me a dame where the game is the same, Who will rant and will rage and much more, But give me a mush with the gentlest push, As clouds pass in a soft evening glow. Then, there’s nothing in the world That’ll stop our march to victory, With light-hearted men, As they go gently sailing by.2. And over and over and bolder and bolder, The soft-hearted men marching by, And higher and higher and wider and wider This heart reaches up to the sky, And brighter and brighter and lighter and lighter Attachments distractions we let lie, Then, there’s nothing in the world That’ll stop our march to victory, With light-hearted men, As they go gently sailing by.3. We’ve traded the tough men

For the heart that has no end, In this heart is the birth of you and I, And higher and higher and wider and wider This heart reaches up to the sky, And brighter and brighter and lighter and lighter Attachments distractions we let lie, Then, there’s nothing in the world That’ll stop our march to victory, With light-hearted men As they go gently sailing by. --to the tune of Stout Hearted Men, S. Romberg

11. Ode to Ramana

Let us meditate on Ramana, teacher of Reality,Who abides within our inmost self ‘as I’--‘as I.’Bringing in full measure the joy of silence, ending delusive pride,Let us meditate on Ramana, teacher of Reality.

Dear devotee keen for Grace, our master is an Ocean,Come and take and hold your fill with mind and heart wide open.Approach him humbly, freely drinking of his Grace to your heart’s delight,Dear devotee keen for Grace, our master is an Ocean.

Like a tree which on a hot day offers shade to all who come,So by nature not by choice, calm he stands immutable.Liking or disliking none, but saving all who reach his feet,Impartially his Grace bestowing, saving all who reach his feet. --Beethoven 9th Symphony, words of Sri Muruganar set by Phillip Pegler

12. The Fallen Angel

You are a fallen angel, please don’t be broken by the pain,But remember the light at the place from where you came.Yours’ aren’t the dying embers, but the fire that makes them glow,To that fire give your fears, in that fire enter the flow. The world is embracing you, There’s music in the air,The world is playing a song for you,My God don’t you hear the song, My God won’t you sing along.Join the dance before the song is through, Please open your arms and give love a chanceThe world, the whole world is embracing you,Why don’t you take a chance,Come on and join the dance. For an angel has taken a crown upon thy head,And the whole world is crowned and the whole world is crowned,An angel has held you in her arms upon her breast,And the whole world is blessed and the whole world is blest.Yours is a diamond tiara, Its not tin or tarnished gold,In that crown have your rest, On that crown have your repose.Your are a fallen angel, please don’t be broken by the pain,But remember the light at the place from where you came.

13.The Headless Tango

When all the world about me’s twirling and entrancing,I give its snares the slip, by now enhancing. When all the din and clamor I can take no longer,

I tell the front desk, I am a goner.Empty your brain, you’ve been bamboozled by a liar,With thoughts retired, the heart grows wider.Love’s blessing fills the still mind with a higher power,The world’s enflowered in the silent mind. Before you make the high sign, To take the trip in space/time,And buy the separate item, Here in the one it’s clear,All being is enlightened, Our senses take delight in,All’s light without exception, In the silent mind.

--to the tune of I Get Ideas, Julio Sanders

14.The Samadhi Waltz

You can forget every Dharma book,Your world is in an enlightened nook,You’ve always been traveling in light you schnook,Swinging your way in Samadhi.

You’ve quit your job at the factory,In the union, the gig is just actorly,Playing the part though knowing in fact you’re free,Swaying with life in Samadhi.

Be here, your face is a sundial,Be now, your nose just went out of style, Be here now, you’re on a vacation isle,Surfing life’s waves in Samadhi.

Clear, near, here, we’ve used this rhyme before,It’s sweet, from love silence we adore,

cd notes final.indd 17 8/24/07 12:17:22 PM

So sweet, we use it just once more,Singing the sky of Samadhi.

Are you sure your head is screwed on right?Screw it right up in the endless light,Buddhas, Babas, Holy Mas and Jesus Christ,With us in the love of Samadhi.

You have become transparent, The world is shining right through your appearance,Its hooks have no adherence,Dancing with life in Samadhi.

Your brain has become a useless block,It cannot figure anything out,Love has blown all its circuits out,Something or other in Samadhi.

15. The Emptiness Serenade

In all the somethings of the worldThe nothings love is shining through,Allowing all the things that areIt’s always here and never far.

Behind the somethings we are seeing,Is shining true vast nothings being,The love in which the world appears,Is never far and always here.

There’s something in the world so freeIt could become a flower or tree, the sky or the sea,And it has become them all,And become you and become me. There’s something in the world so new,Just when it starts right then it’s through,And it is just now being bornAnd it is me and it is you.

There’s something in the world so nearThe world may be in it my dear,And anywhere we ever go,When we return its still right here.

16. Grand Finale ala Donizetti

Gone, going, gone-away, There’s no repose sir.Gone, going, gone-away, Always coming closer.Gone, going, gone-away, There’s no escaping.Gone, going, gone-away, It won’t be long.

Hope you enjoy the play, Nothing in it can stay,Still in its special way, Leading us on.Why not enjoy the play, Only the love remains, And in its endless way, Carries us home. --set to a tune from Don Pasquale, G. Donizetti

17. Buffo Sutra Rossini

Now’s the time for meditation, All your cares are on vacation,Throw your worries out the window, Sit your butt upon a pillow,Now’s the time to meditate, And to give your weary brain break,Do not think about stocks or weather, Because it’s a gift to concentrate.

Your mind’s running, Stop becoming,Play it dead,Your sitting in a casket. No more panting, Endless ranting,Just be here, The world is your gift basketYou know nothing, It’s all stuffing,Let it go, You don’t know what your saying. You are raving, With endless craving,Let it go, There’s nothing that is staying.

What to do,Where to go, What to say,Who to know,AAAhh, I’m going crazy. What to get, How to spend, What to take,Where to sit,AAAhhh, my mind’s all hazy.Where to, why to, how to, etc.AAAAAAAHHHHHHHH--

Check in your baggage, It’s waiting at the station,You have a ticket on the ‘Enlightenment express.’Your seat’s by the window, May as well enjoy the journey,Why not enjoy the view? Every turn brings something new.Check in your baggage and check in your stress,You haven’t far to go, You’ve arrived by thinking less.Quickly, quickly, don’t be noisy,Don’t be nois, nois, nois, nois, nois, nois, noisy,

Just be still and play it dumb,Everything you need is done.No more pestering, no more pestering,No more pest, pest, pest, pest, pest, pest, pestering,No complaining, and no whining,No more whin, whin, whin, whin, whin, whin, whinwhin, whining.Though it’s a stormy sea, Cast your fate to the winds,Though it’s a stormy sea, It will finally set you free.Towards the ends of your confusions, These aren’t idle speculations,Or mere tricks of elocution. They are going to set your mind a wandering,Onto infinite relations with the noblest profusionsOf the intimate solutions with the most refined effusions. --set to various tunes by G. Rossini

Attie’s romp through Eastern mysticism and practice illuminates, instructs and celebrates life’s juxtaposition of chaos, passion, music, poetry, art, travel and people with spiritual practice. His world is a warm place filled with love, humor and appreciation. --Stan Madson, editor, The Bodhi Tree Book Review

With enchanting tales about his journey through the halls and temples of several Asian spiritual traditions and hilarious directions for breaking down staid concepts about meditation, Attie will entice even the most reluctant to find a cushion and begin a meditation practice. --Susan Suntree, Editor, Wisdom of the East: Stories of Compassion, Inspiration, and Love
