You asked and we listened! It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Colorado Dental Association’s Annual Session, June 5-7, 2014 at the beautiful Vail Marriott Mountain Resort in Vail, CO.

Last year, Annual Session attendees graciously gave the CDA feedback and we take that seriously. This year, we’re doing everything we can to make this annual meeting something that everyone can enjoy. Here’s what we’re doing:

You asked for more business and less formality in the House of Delegates. Check! The agenda cuts to the chase for more business to occur in the morning. Additionally, several reports will be made in written or video form to make better use of delegates’ time.

You hinted that you needed a mid-day break to socialize rather than a formal luncheon with a podium. Check! Weather permitting, we’ll be sitting outside for the Delegate’s luncheon with a lighter summer meal, and time to move around and catch up with colleagues.

You asked for more CE. Check! This year we’re offering a three-hour clinical track and a three-hour non-clinical track containing fresh topics and seven great speakers.

You reminded us that having a handful of organized recreational activities is worthwhile. Check! This year, we’re excited to offer a homebrewing course all about craft beer. We also have a negotiated rate for our attendees to use the Vail Athletic Club. Back by popular demand, we have the Saturday 5K/1 mile fun run. And of course, I couldn’t have an annual meeting without a golf tournament…BUT, this tournament is different than year’s past. It will be at the exclusive Red Sky Golf Club in Wolcott, CO and proceeds from the tournament will benefi t Kids in Need of Dentistry. Anyone can golf – while I hope you come for the entire Annual Session weekend, it is not a requirement to play in the tournament.

You told us that mountain getaways were preferred. Check! The Lionshead area of Vail is easily one of the most charming European-inspired resort destina-tions in Colorado. We’ve designed the Annual Session around walking. Once you arrive and park, you’ll easily be able to ditch the car for the weekend and travel by foot or by the free local shuttle.

Lastly, you told us that you enjoyed camaraderie, networking with col-leagues and catching up with friends. Check! In addition to the Welcome Wine and Cheese Reception, the continental breakfasts and the Delegates’ Lun-cheon, there are plenty of fun party hopping opportunities on Friday night between the past president’s reception, CU Alumni reception, Creighton Alumni gathering and New Dentist Committee networking event.

My motto is: work hard for the shortest time possible and play harder for the lon-gest time possible! The CDA Annual Session is about business, uniting as a profes-sion and collaborating with fellow dentists. House of Delegates MeetingFriday, June 6, 8:30 a.m.-Noon and 1:45-5:00 p.m.

Thank you to the delegates attending this year’s CDA House of Delegates meeting. The House of Delegates is the CDA’s govern-ing body that meets annually to make im-portant decisions for the CDA and organized dentistry. The meeting will start promptly at 8:30 a.m. – please be on time and bring your House of Delegates materials. The House of Delegates will provide a wireless atmo-sphere, but we encourage you to download all needed materials prior to the meeting. The morning session will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon, followed by the Delegates’ Lun-cheon from noon to 1:15 p.m. After lunch, please visit our exhibitors for the dedicated Exhibit Hall time from 1:15 to 1:45 p.m. The afternoon session will begin promptly at 1:45 p.m.

CDA delegates represent the entire state of Colorado. CDA members from all 12 com-ponents and the CU School of Dental Medi-cine are present to share thoughts and opin-ions. You are representing your component and we urge you to be an active participant in this meeting. Weather permitting, we’ll be sitting out-side for the Delegate’s luncheon with a lighter summer meal, and time to move around and catch up with colleagues. Delegates and guests are invited to attend the annual Delegates’ Luncheon. There is no charge for delegates/alternate del-egates participating in the House of Del-egates, Executive Committee members, or registered exhibitors and event hosts. The cost for guests is $38 each. Please in-dicate on the registration form if you require a vegetarian meal.

Root Resorptions: What you need to know from diagnosis to treatmentPresented by: Robert Corr, D.D.S., M.S.8:30-9:30 a.m.

Root resorption presents a signifi-cant challenge to dentists across all specialties. There are several variet-ies of resorption —each with different etiologic and morphological fea-

tures, and each with different management strategies. Early diagnosis is important, but this is often difficult as clinical findings are many times absent and radiographic findings can be very subtle. Significant loss of tooth structure can progress occultly, leading to structural compromise or loss of teeth. This presentation will examine the etiologies, pathogenesis, and prognoses of the various categories of resorption, with a case-based review of possible treatment options.

Learning Objectives:• Review the classifications of various

resorptions• Present the etiologic factors,

pathogenesis and prognoses for the different resorptive processes

• Discuss how to better detect the clinical and radiographic features of resorption for earlier diagnosis

• Present various treatment options, and review clinical cases and outcomes

Orthodontic Retention: Why it matters to you and your general practicePresented by: Matthew Gaworski, D.D.S.9:30-10:30 a.m.

Everyone has heard of retainers and their association with orthodontic treatment, but questions like, “What type of retainer should I use?” “How often should I wear my retainer?” and “Do I

really need to wear them forever?” can leave you struggling for an answer other than, “Gee, maybe you should ask an orthodontist about that.”

This lecture is for dentists and hygienists who are actually front line players when it comes to retention and often do not even realize it. Get informed with current thinking on retention and see why a com-prehensive retention program should be implemented and managed by the general dentist, hygienist, and the general dental team. It can increase your production with very little effort and you’ll be doing a huge service for your patients.

Learning Objectives:• Know and understand current concepts

in retention• Be able to identify the different types of

retention and when they are indicated• Understand the biology of tooth

movement and the changes that occur necessitating retention

• Examine misconceptions regarding why teeth relapse after movement and the impact that aging has on tooth alignment

• Be able to implement a retention program in your office with your team

“Clenching” – The CO2 connectionPresented by: Frank Seaman, D.D.S., M.S., and Roberto deGuevara, O.T.R., R.F.E.10:30-11:30 a.m.

Poor breathing habits such as open mouth breathing results in low PCO2 and could be one of the factors related with noctur-nal clenching and bruxism. Poor breath-ing habits are a learned experience and can be corrected. Watch an uncongested baby breathe. Their lips are closed and they breathe with the rise and fall of their stomach. With time, this natural breathing pattern is interrupted, and other breathing habits are developed. Mouth breathing is one such habit that is very inefficient and results in poor CO2 retention. The impor-tance of pulmonary CO2 retention will be explained as it relates to hypoxia and the brain’s response to try and correct the prob-lem. Clenching is one of these responses. Breathing efficiency can be improved with nasal breathing and slower deeper breath-ing patterns. Capnography can aid in this re-learning process.

Learning Objectives:• Learn how mouth breathing leads to

insufficient breathing patterns and nocturnal clenching

• Understand the importance of pulmonary CO2 retention and how it helps with the transport of oxygen through the hemoglobin; the Bohr Effect

• Demonstrate the cascade of events that occurs with hypoxia and the brain’s autonomic action to reverse it; the apneic event

• Learn what the ideal breathing pattern is, and how to achieve it with capnography biofeedback training

With the acceptance and incorporation of digital radiographic imaging in dentistry, practitioners are now faced with chal-lenges in patient re-cord compliance and regulatory policies. These challenges

include issues related to patient and staff safety, fi le formats, compression of images,

sending images to colleagues and consults, HIPPA compliance, and state practice acts – just to mention a few. The purpose of this course will be to review the many challenges facing you and your staff as users of digital imaging, and to provide strategies to ensure compliance.

The Vail Athletic Club is a four minute drive away from the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort and provides an entire gym and classes from yoga and zumba to a total body boot camp. Day passes, normally priced at $35, will be available to CDA conference attendees for $20.
