Peterborough Deaf Drop in Jason Sharpe had showed them the lesson about V V signing (Visual Vernacular)in July. VV signing is body moving to tell the story without using BSL signs ortalking but you have to stay at same position all the time.In August children were excited about their school break and outing but it wasalso busy for parents to purchase their new uniforms and Younger Deaf to talkabout which course are suitable for them to attend.September is back to school time, we shared our holiday experience. Also we aremissing the sounds of the younger Deaf as they are begin their college courses. Iwish them all the best for their courses. We are proud of Jason Sharpe he had his graduation with 2.1 Bachelor of Sciencewith Honours in computing and information systems, he has worked REALLY HARDfor 6 years studying part time. It has taken a long time but he got the result andachieved at last. He shows us Deaf People can do with the hard work.KY DAI

Huntingdon Deaf Lunchtime GroupThis small Drop-in group is still going well. We have average attendance of tenpeople. We have regular three Deaf Wheelchairs users attending this drop-in. TheLibrary is a good location because it is near to Bus Station and it is in central ofHuntingdon so it is easy forWheelchair users making their ownway without any help. InSeptember thirteen turned up andin October we had two birthday

celebrations, one for TonyVanterpool and another one forMarion Gossland. We brought cakesfor them and we all sang/signed ‘Happy Birthday’JAMIE BILLAM8

Coffee Afternoon (Wisbech)This very small group of Deaf people who came to see Hilda Boehm who is basedat Lyncroft Care Home, 81 Clarkson Avenue, Wisbech. PE13 2EA the CoffeeAfternoon for an hour. It is really good to see people like Peter Chapman who is aregular visitor to Hilda. Peter catches the bus from Kings Lynn to Wisbech. Thenhe gets off in Wisbech Bus Station and he walk a long way to Lyncroft Care Homewith the aid of walking frame. Arthur Cracknell was another regular one; he andPeter often have friendly argument which certainly amused Hilda a lot.Next dates are Nov 1 st and Dec 6 th 2pm to 3pmJAMIE BILLAM

Cambridge Deaf Lunchtime GroupAttendance for this group was disappointing as just over ten people regularlyattended this monthly group. We hope to arrange an outing for this group withother groups early next year. Like for all other drop-ins, we have Support workersavailable for Deaf People.JAMIE BILLAM

Editor’s articleI thought CDA’s AGM went really well and it was good to see so many peoplethere. I think we should stick to a 2pm start next year.I was so pleased to see most of the painting done outside the building and someof the inside too. A lot of people thought I chose the colour, something to do withMan U but it was not my idea so I will leave it to you to continue guessing whosuggested it to me! If I have my own way I would pick black and Amber, thecolour of my beloved team, Hull City.We have provisionally booked Deaf Day Thursday 22 nd May 2014 but we have notyet received confirmation in black and white. It will be at the Corn Exchange in the

centre of St Ives. Once we have received confirmation and the cost and if we arehappy then we will start to get the ball rolling with things like posters etc. TheDeaf Day will start something like 1pm to 7pm.Next year we hope to have a BSL Walk every month. We have got a small amount of funding from Comic Relief for Deaf Advocacy in thePeterborough area. I am excited about the new project that is about to start soonand it is really wonderful to know that Ruth Godden will be involved. We have got a wonderful staff team in our office and they have all really workedhard to give their best for the local deaf community. I am sure the Trustees aretrying their best to ensure our plans for long term future.JAMIE BILLAM

I, as Jason's daughter, felt soexcited and proud that I were to go to see my dadgraduate with flying colours, his marks were a 2.1. Sincemy father is deaf he uses BSL to communicate, otherwise

known as British Sign Language. Before Jason's big day we discussed Jason's feelingsabout tomorrow he replied "Excited but also emotional itshows we deaf people can do it!". When he graduated hisparents, my mum and I went to see him graduate, wewent to see him step proudly on to that stage and revivehis diploma. When we arrived at the bull hotel and my dad collected his gown I could see in hisface he was nervous but trying hard not to show it! Once we took our pictures thephotographer kept fussing over my dad to get him in the perfect position, my dadlooked tired by the end of the photos from all that fussing! We got to the Cathedral waiting anxiously for my dad to walk down the aisle andguess what! My dad was first a large grin spread across my face, my dad is goingto graduate! After the graduates I was surprised to see amongst the mayor andlecture people came... Louis Smith! He became an Honorary Doctor of HealthSciences. The ceremony began and one by one the graduates received their diplomas. Aftera long wait my dad came on the stage! I smiled. He received his degree forBachelor of Science with Honours Computing and Information Systems and wentback with a roaring applause! After the ceremony we ate also that was the time I could ask my dad how he feltand he smiled and said to me. "Amazing. Just AMAZING!"ZARA Sharpe-Dai

Blackburn hospital launches live BSL interpretingproject I have copied an article from ‘Hearing Times’ I think it is good and I hope we canspread it across UK!

A new webcam will ensure deaf patients receive better care at Blackburn’s urgentcare centre, health chiefs have announced.

Blackburn with Darwen Council and East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust haslaunched a pilot project to enable nurses to connect with a British Sign Languageinterpreter via a Skype video call, so they can translate on behalf of deaf patientsand nursing staff when discussing symptoms and treatment.

For the first time, it will give deaf patients the same access to services as otherpatients, and will also save the East Lancashire Deaf Society, and hospital, time

and money.

Previously, assessment of deaf patients at the urgent care unit had to be delayeduntil an on-call interpreter could travel to the site, with interpreters’ travelexpenses and time factored into the costs.JAMIE BILLAM
