CDM magazine for GD2TRANSCRIPT
The CDM departmen at Carthage is committed to helping students devel-op the understandings and practical skills necessary for effective communi-cation and leadership in this changing world.
The technologies and attendant cultures of the Infor-
mation Age are deeply impacting human communi-
cation in the 21st century. Global and local cultures
are undergoing profound shifts in communication
practices. Media and visual literacy are increasingly
as foundational for an educated citizenry as read-
ing, writing and speaking, and there is not a career
path unaffected by the convergence of older oral
and print cultures with the burgeoning world of digital
communication. Carthage offers majors in commu-
nication, graphics design, and public relations. The
department houses all three areas of study because
the fields are so connected within the job market.
Students are trained in written, oral and visual com-
munication, with special emphases on ethical con-
siderations, and on the ability to communicate using
electronic and digital media.
The connections students make help build their skills
needed later in life. They blend the theoretical and
practical i order to succeed in any area they choose.

Students will develop the skills re-
quired for employment in their
fields — whether public relations, new
media, communications, or graphic
design — but the department’s goals
for students involve more than techni-
cal proficiency. The faculty of the CDM
Department actively support students
in finding appropriate internships that
challenge and extend their class-
room learning. Carthage CDM
majors develop excellent interpersonal
communication, group problem solving,
creative thinking, and organization skills,
making them more competitive in the
job market, no matter what career path
they pursue.

Communication is conveying informa-
tion through thoughts or messages.
This is done through symbols, signs, or behavior. The
program explores the role of communication in com-
munity maintenance and change. Also in the major,
one looks at the media and their role in todays cul-
ture. What students learn allows for them to succeed
in the competitive field of communication. The major
culminates in the completion and public presentation
of a senior project or thesis.
