Dialing Mistakes…

• In the GSM networks, Roamware has observed– 1-5% of all calls made by roamers have dialing mistakes§ 50% of misdialed calls are with incorrect Intl. Dialing Prefix or

without one– CDMA: Mexico and Korea use 0 for national dialing; 00 for intl.

Dialing. North America uses 1 and 011§ 18% of the misdialed calls are without the country code and

often with a leading National Dialing Prefix– Possibly dialing from phonebook memory

§ 7% of the misdialed calls have other automatically correctable formatting problems

– * instead of + when phone supports Plus Dialing– ** instead of + when phone MMI requires you to press the * key

long enough to change to +– Home CAC and CIC codes (eg: 101XXXX codes in USA)

Roaming Short Codes

Application allows inbound roamers to use familiar Short Codes to access services like Customer Care, Directory Assistance, Global Brands and Voicemail.

The CLI Delivery Problem

• Caller Line Identification (CLI) is stripped by International carriers

• Problem is more prominent when subscriber is roaming on a GSM network using plastic roaming– IS-41-D ROUTEREQ message allows transfer of CLI BUT– GSM VLR in serving network may not have this feature

activated

• Roamware and Belgacom partner to guarantee CLI delivery to over 100 mobile networks

2. Home operator gets TLDN from Serving network

3. Home operator sends a message (using SS7 or IP) to Roamware CLI guarantee node in Belgacom or Serving network and receives a Temporary Routing Number (TRN)

4. Home operator routes call to the TRN using Least Cost Routing

5. At the other end, Roamware node inserts various parameters back into the ISUP message and routes the call to final destination (TLDN)

• CDMA standards support Optimal Routing of Late Call Forwarding ONLY if the subscriber is roaming in another CDMA network

• What happens if your subscriber is roaming abroad on a GSM network?– OR-LCF part of standard but not widely implemented– Loss of critical parameters for seamless voicemail deposit– Serving GSM operator probably not interested in

implementing it either since inbound roaming is higher than outbound roaming (on CDMA)

Description

Optimized Routing Services enable operators to route all in-network (or in-country) roaming subscriber calls in the most efficient manner, leading to reduced costs and increased margins.

Voicemail Call-Out & Call-Back

• When a voicemail is deposited for the subscriber, the event is detected and an automatic call out is made to the out-roamer

• Can also be triggered based on customer request via SMS

• Overcomes issues with seamless access to voicemail (Open Tree problem) due to loss of CLI over international voice circuits

• Higher margins for home operator


Communicating with Roamers

So, how does an operator communicate available services to its outbound and inbound roamers?
