Why Capacity?http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/

Urban Mobility Scorecard 2015

Kirkland, WA and College Station, TX – August 26, 2015 – America’s traffic congestion recession is over. Just as the U.S. economy has regained nearly all of the 9 million jobs lost during the downturn, a new report produced by INRIX and the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) shows that traffic congestion has returned to pre-recession levels.According to the 2015 Urban Mobility Scorecard, travel delays due to traffic congestion caused drivers to waste more than 3 billion gallons of fuel and kept travelers stuck in their cars for nearly 7 billion extra hours – 42 hours per rush-hour commuter.

The total nationwide price tag: $160 billion, or $960 per commuter.Source: http://mobility.tamu.edu/ums/media-information/press-release/

If you have additional $960 per year, what will you do?

For example, drivers onAmerica’s Top 10 worst roads waste on average 84 hours or 3.5 days a year on average in gridlock– twice the national average. Of these roads, six are in Los Angeles, two are in New York and theremaining two are in Chicago. Nine other cities have roads ranked among the 50 worst.

Why Safety?http://www.infrastructurereportcard.org/

Toward Zero Deaths

We embrace the vision of Toward Zero Deaths; it provides an overarching and common vision that drives andfocuses our efforts to achieve our shared goal to eliminate injuries and fatalities on our roadways. The U.S. Department of Transportation will do our part by aggressively using all tools at our disposal – researchinto new safety systems and technologies, campaigns to educate the public, investments in infrastructure andcollaboration with all of our government partners to support strong laws and data-driven approaches to improvesafety.–U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx

Rowan University FocusPavement Renewal Solutions (R05 & R23)

• Problem:– Prestressed Concrete Pavements (PCP) significantly speeds up the

rehabilitation of roadways.– However, PCP technology is relatively new: – Information on PCP best practices and performance has not been well

documented. – Many PCP systems are proprietary:

• Solution:– SHRP2 R05 project was initiated with the objective of:– “Developing guidelines and tools for agencies to use in the selection,

design, construction, installation, and maintenance of PCP systems, and offers tools to develop a cost-benefit assessment.”

– Poses a difficulty in implementation.

Rowan University FocusService Life Design for Bridges (R19A)

• The main objective of the Guide is to provide information and guidance and to define procedures to systematically approach service life and durability for both new and existing bridges.

• The Guide includes 11 chapters, each devoted to certain parts of a bridge or aspects of the service life design process.
