The M2M megatrend: Vodafone – connecting the world
003
There are no two ways about it: M2M is here to stay. When ThyssenKrupp recently renewed and extended its partnership with Vodafone, the contract included 60,000 voice and data SIM cards – and 50,000 machine-to-machine (M2M) SIM cards, which will be used to automate op-eration and maintenance of tens of thousands of ThyssenKrupp lifts. This is just one example
of how M2M communication has become part of our day-to-day lives – in many instan-ces without us even noticing – and is changing how we live and work. M2M systems can accurately capture journey data, allowing insurance pro-viders to offer customers tailor-made plans. In fact, Vodafone is launching a pilot project along these lines with
AIG Europe Limited. And if a car accident occurs, this innovative technology can automatically alert the emergency services. Many BMWs on Germany’s roads are already fitted with these systems. Further applications range from coffee machines (WMF, for example) and defibrillators (such as those made by Philips) to production lines operated by manufacturers big and small. Across the board, M2M is making our world more efficient and our lives a little easier – while creating entirely new business possibilities.
Vodafone blazes new trailsWith 9.7 million M2M connections and an inter-national team of over 200 M2M specialists, Vodafone is a leading provider in this growth market. What’s more, Analysys Mason dubbed the communications giant an “industry icon” in its recent M2M Scorecard Report, awarding it a top spot in the ranking.

“M2M communication is becoming part-and-parcel of everyday life”
Mr Brenneis, what M2M services does Vodafone currently offer? Our portfolio features products such as M2M SIM cards that meet the strict requirements of industrial applications, a proprietary global M2M management platform for data manage-ment and analytics, and end-to-end solutions for individual customers. Available all over the world, our Managed M2M Connectivity Ser-vice allows customers to implement local or global M2M projects in line with their require-ments. Plus, they can manage their own SIM cards via an application programming inter-face (API) or web portal. And by providing a full overview of data volumes, the system ensures greater cost transparency, control and security. All of these processes are sup-ported by our M2M platform.
which sectors stand to benefit most from M2M? M2M presents opportunities for a wide range of industries. In the automotive, energy, manu-facturing and healthcare sectors, in particular, it is the wave of the future. Connected cars are already a reality, creating new possibilities for carmakers and drivers, and enabling the mobil-ity of tomorrow. BMW’s ConnectedDrive is breaking new ground in this space, and we are supporting this system with our global Managed M2M Connectivity Service.
One industry undergoing a sea change as a result of M2M is the energy sector…That’s right – smart gas or electricity meters fitted with SIM cards can reduce energy con-sumption and CO
2 emissions. Enterprise users
and private customers benefit from this new level of visibility. And our EnergyNet solution is ideal for managing this data.
How is M2M being deployed in manufacturing and healthcare?M2M-based remote monitoring services can help keep tabs on buildings, vehicles or other items. And in the healthcare sector, remote monitoring helps hospitals to shorten hospital stays and cut costs. Take Vodafone Global Enterprise, for example, which provides com-munication solutions for Boston Scientific pacemakers.
what trends should we look out for in the short to midterm? In the short-term, M2M communication is set to gain a stronger foothold in all industries. And looking further into the future, connect-ed devices and machines will become a part-and-parcel of our day-to-day lives. Visions such as the smart city and the smart home will become a reality. And as a market leader, we will work together with our customers to drive this transformation.
erik brenneis is director of Machine to Machine at Vodafone global enterprise. He heads up an inter national team of around 200 special-ists responsible for develop-ing M2M communication concepts. The products they design are making the inter-net of Things a reality – opening up a whole new world of possibilities.

remote maintenance and managementHow many manoeuvres has our fork-lift per-formed today? Now, finding out couldn’t be easier: Vodafone and Jungheinrich have de-signed an end-to-end solution for capturing performance and motion data for construction and other machinery. State-of-the-art data capture and connectivity technology uploads the information directly to a screen at head-quarters. Error messages and maintenance alerts help on-site tech support staff work more eff iciently. And geofencing systems make it possible to specify precisely where a machine can work. If it leaves a defined area it can be remotely deactivated – stopping thieves in their tracks.
Energy data managementWhen it comes to energy consumption, the Vodafone EnergyNet solution helps enterprise customers conserve valuable resources. A smart application hosted in the Vodafone data centre leverages M2M technology to capture precise consumption data for every single me-

ter. This gives users unprecedented visibility into lighting, water, cooling and heating costs – which also makes it easy to measure the car-bon footprint. Plus, Vodafone energy data man-agement solutions can cut costs by up to 30 per cent – as independent tests performed by German standards authority TÜV have shown.
Connected charging stationsElectromobility is on the up and up, with more and more electric cars and lorries hitting the road every day. And the network of charging stations is growing, too – making it important to capture consumption data for billing pur-poses. Vodafone’s collaboration with RWE has resulted in a smart charging system that does just that. Integrated into Vodafone’s global M2M network, the relevant data is captured and authenticated before the corresponding invoices are generated. M2M solutions such as this are set to play a key role in creating the right infrastructure for tomorrow’s mobility.

Sudden cardiac arrest is the number-one cause of death, accounting for 700,000 fatalities in Europe every year, of which 100,000 are in Ger-many. However, many of these deaths can be prevented with the right kind of emergency medical response. This is where a special Philips defibrillator designed for operation by lay peo-ple comes in. Based on M2M technology, the life-saving device can be installed in public places, where it can be used to provide first-response care. When the connected defibrillator is removed from its position on the wall, emer-gency services are automatically alerted via a Vodafone smart card. The operator contacted provides support to the layperson operating the defibrillator via integrated loudspeakers, until the ambulance arrives. Plus, the Philips device is equipped with special software that analyses the heart rate and “decides” whether defibrilla-tion is necessary. The defibrillators are con-nected via a Vodafone M2M platform – automat-ing maintenance and operation. What’s more, the devices’ status is continuously monitored and transmitted.
Conventional defibrillators must be inspected on a daily basis to determine whether they are functioning properly. But thanks to M2M, this is now a thing of the past – as the device auto-matically transmits its status on a regular basis. This frees up capital for additional defibrillators that can be installed at company sites or public places such as train stations and airports. And the SmartConnect solution offers an additional benefit: when the device alerts emergency medical response services, it transmits its posi-tion at all times via GSM. This enables the crews to take the fastest route to the patient.
Vodafone continues to innovate in the health-care space. For example, it wants to help lower the costs of medical treatment. Its TrxCare app is designed to remind senior citizens to take their medication on time. And the telecommu-nications enterprise is collaborating with Boston Scientific to develop a real-time monitoring system for heart patients.
