The World Food Summit of 1996 agreed that food security requires that “all people at all times have access to sufficient, safe, nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life.” The governments of many developing countries have continued to pursue this goal through advances in agricultural technology and educational initiatives. In Nigeria, this initiative has included projects to explore ways of increasing the yield of cassava root and the Ugu plant, major components of the nation’s diet. Other efforts have included the development of genetically modified crops, more effective pesticides, and better farming techniques.
