Wow, look at Cedar Bend Humane Society grow!!!We are very proud of all we have accomplished this past year, and we are excited to launch many new programs and services going into our 2016 fiscal year. We have worked hard to orchestrate new programs to help meet community needs and the needs of the homeless animal population. New programs and services include: “Mutt Hutt” Boarding, Microchip Clinics, In-House Spay/Neuter Program, Trap-Neuter-Return Program, Barn Cat Program, Lost and Found Services, and It Pays to Spay Fundraiser, and we are pleased to again house stray animals for the cities of Waterloo and Cedar Falls. Please read more on these programs and services within the annual report. These are huge milestones for the Cedar Bend Humane Society, and they focus on our mission to reduce animal overpopulation, to increase the return of lost pets to their owners, to care for and protect stray animals in the Cedar Valley, to increase adoptions, to educate the community, to offer a wide range of services to the community, and to ultimately reduce the need for euthanasia.

With generous support from the community, we have experienced growth within the shelter. We have received much-needed funding, many hours of dedicated volunteer time, valued community and individual relationships, ambitious fosters, dedicated rescues, important partnerships, and both monetary and product donations to help meet the needs of many homeless animals. We want to thank you for supporting and helping us to help them! We definitely have a passionate and caring community! Thank you for helping the many homeless animals and giving them a second chance at life! We are looking forward to a very productive year.

President’s Message

I have been President of Cedar Bend Humane Society Board of Directors for six years. I am the proud “mother” of two dogs: an eleven-year-old Dalmatian named Pelli and a five-year-old Schipperke mix named Jackson, who I fostered and adopted through CBHS. It’s been an exciting year in the life of Cedar Bend Humane Society. This past year has seen many accomplishments due to the hard work and many hours of Karla Beckman and Kristy Gardner (our two Co-Directors), the staff, volunteers, and the Board of Directors. Just a few of these are the completion of the new website, a new partnership with the ASPCA, the hiring of a part-time veterinarian who spay/neuters all of our animals who are of age, and the planning and designing of our new boarding facility, the “Mutt Hutt.” All of the revenue from this facility will go toward the care of all the animals at CBHS. Keep your eyes open for our grand opening of the “Mutt Hutt,” planned for the fall of 2015. The Board of Directors would like to thank the community for all of your support, and please know that your support is needed to continue our mission as a humane society. I believe some of this growth has been accomplished due to the development of a well-functioning Board that works extremely well with the Co-Directors. This team approach has allowed the Board, Co-Directors, staff and

volunteers to develop Cedar Bend Humane Society as it is today. While we have done a lot, there are still many exciting opportunities ahead of us. I hope you are all as excited as I am about what the future of CBHS holds. Just look at how far we have come!!

The Adoption Center can accommodate up to 40 adoption dogs and 75 adoption cats. Many times, CBHS also has a variety of pocket pets waiting for new homes! Once a pet enters the adoption center, we are committed to finding it a home, and there is no time limit determining its stay. Staff and volunteers work to ensure the animals residing in the Adoption Center stay healthy and happy while waiting for a family they can call their own. This is accomplished through the “animal enrichment” program, which provides each pet with toys, food puzzles, outside exercise time, and social interaction with other pets and volunteers.

The Adoption Staff is a very dedicated bunch. Their goal is to help each family pick out and adopt an appropriate pet to fit their lifestyle, which is done through an application and interview process. CBHS has a quiet “meet and greet” room, outside exercise pens, and a dog walking trail. These areas give prospective adopters an excellent opportunity to spend time with a variety of shelter pets prior to taking one home! When you choose to open your home to a shelter pet, you will not

only receive a life-long companion that has been health and temperament tested, you will also receive continued support from the CBHS staff throughout your pet’s lifetime. Cedar Bend Humane Society knows that there is no greater reward than to give a homeless animal a second chance at life! Please adopt and help us save more lives!

The CBHS Intake Center is responsible for answering all incoming phone calls and handling all animals entering the shelter. We receive all types of animals: cats, dogs, pigs, ferrets, parakeets, gerbils, mice, rabbits, rats, guinea pigs, reptiles, and a variety of wildlife. There are many reasons why these animals arrive at Cedar Bend Humane Society. They may be stray, abandoned, lost, sick, injured, or not wanted by their families.

Animals that arrive at the shelter are examined by CBHS Medical Technicians. Vaccinations are given and a holding period is determined. Stray animals are held between three and seven days depending on the requirements of the city or county in which the animal was found. If an owner does not claim the stray animal, ownership converts to CBHS at the end of the predetermined holding period. Every animal is evaluated according

to health and temperament. Once a pet is determined to be an adoption candidate, it receives the necessary vet care and is moved to the Adoption Center where it will remain until it finds a new forever home! If you wish to surrender a pet or need help with a stray animal, call 319-232-6887 or contact the CBHS Intake Center at 319-235-5335 for additional information and surrender fees. Hours of operation 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. seven days a week.

It is hard to express how important CBHS volunteers are to the animals at the shelter. They spend countless hours caring for the needs of animals. They provide daily consistent love, exercise, and attention to our “guests” while we find pets their forever homes. Volunteer opportunities with Cedar Bend Humane Society include walking dogs, cleaning kennels, stuffing envelopes for mailings, and assisting with fundraising events. Currently, there are 195 active CBHS volunteers, including 48 junior volunteers under 18 years of age. Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. On average, we have 45 active volunteers with 175 volunteer hours per month. Group volunteers include: Girl Scout troops, Boy Scout troops, Quakerdale, Target Managers, Black Hawk /Grundy Mental Health Center, Rock Valley Physical Therapy, EPI Services, Iowa Workforce Development, and various

In-House Spay Neuter Program

The Cedar Bend Humane Society is excited to announce our new, in-house spay and neuter program for our shelter pets!This program allows us to have all of our shelter pets that are at least 12 weeks of age spayed or neutered before being adopted. Thanks to a very generous donation from one of our financial supporters, we were able to purchase the equipment necessary for these in-house spays and neuters. This program is also made possible thanks to a partnership with Dr. Melick, a local vet, who performs the surgeries for us. According to the ASPCA, only 10 percent of the animals entering shelters are spayed or neutered. The cost of spaying or neutering a pet is considerably less than the cost of raising puppies or kittens. Part of our mission is to educate the community about responsible pet ownership. Cedar Bend Humane Society hosted a “Microchip Your Pet” clinic in June where microchipping was offered at a reduced fee. It was a great success with 178 petsmicrochipped! Thank you to everyone who took the time to bring your pet to CBHS to be microchipped. CBHS will schedule microchip clinics throughout the summer, locally and in surrounding communites, and has set a goal to microchip 1,000 animals in 2015. “We want animals to find their way home, to stay in their homes, and avoid becoming homeless if they should stray from home and arrive at a shelter or veterinary clinic,” said Kristy Gardner, CBHS Co-Director. The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is injected just under the skin between the shoulder blades. Microchips offer permanent identification for pets and increase the likelihood that they are returned home if

lost. The microchip contains an identification number unique to the pet. It is implanted with a syringe in a process similar to receiving a vaccination; most animals don’t even react when it is implanted. If your pet becomes lost, a vet or animal shelter uses a scanner to

detect the microchip. The scanner will provide the unique ID number associated with your pet. This ID number is linked to your contact information in a data bank.

The 6th annual Furry 5K Run / Walk was held on Sunday, May 10th at Big Woods Lake in Cedar Falls. Over 200 people participated and supported the animals at Cedar Bend Humane Society. The Cedar Bend Humane Society launched a new fundraiser in April called “IT PAYS TO SPAY.” At your request, a group of dog and cat yard ornaments are placed in your friend’s yard to represent pet overpopulation. CBHS is partnering with the cities of Waterloo and Cedar Falls to launch a TNR program. The goal is to reduce the number of free-roaming cats living within urban neighborhoods. Animal Control Officers will work with community members to coordinate the trapping of free-roaming cats which will be delivered to CBHS and evaluated. Sick and injured cats may be euthanized, while healthy feral cats will be sterilized, vaccinated, and ear-tipped. Animal Control or CBHS will then return the cats to their original locations to be a community free- roaming cat.

What is a feral cat?

What is Trap-Neuter-Return?

What is the advantage of Trap-Neuter-Return? Feral or non-socialized, free-roaming cats cannot be picked up or handled by humans. They are often the offspring of free-roaming outdoor cats that are not sterilized. These cats are often many generations removed from human ownership and cannot be placed into a typical home situation.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a method of humanely controlling feral/free-roaming cat populations. Free- roaming cats are humanely trapped, sterilized, vaccinated, and ear-tipped (a small notch in the left ear is the universal mark of a sterilized free-roaming cat). Socialized cats are adopted into homes, and cats that are non-socialized or feral are returned to their original location.

Trap-Neuter-Return offers many advantages to cats and the community. TNR will reduce the breeding of more unwanted cats and also reduces the number of free-roaming cats. Additionally, TNR stops many nuisance behaviors such as spraying, yowling, and fighting. Through TNR, cats are vaccinated and sterilized.

CBHS Barn Cat Program Cedar Bend Humane Society is pleased to announce the Barn Cat Placement Program! This program is designed to help find homes for cats who may have difficulty living as a companion animal. Cats that are placed into our Barn Cat Program range from semi-feral to very friendly but are not suitable for indoor pet placement. Many of these cats were found as strays, are shy or fearful of people, or are just too independent to adjust to living indoors as house cats. Barn cats benefit their caretakers by helping to keep rodents away from grain and food storage areas! By supporting a barn cat(s), you will have the satisfaction of giving them a second chance at life and a much needed home.

to consider adopting from our Barn Cat Program!

• A warm, dry barn or building in which the cats can live out their lives.• A constant supply of food and fresh water.• A commitment to monitor and provide for their safety and well-being.

Recovering a Pet from CBHS

Cedar Bend Humane Society will soon offer lost and found pet postings on our website.

If you are missing a pet, we strongly encourage you to check with us immediately. Please call 319-232-6887 or 319-235-5335 or come to the shelter to identify/claim your pet. CBHS holds stray animals for the cities of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Waverly and for rural Black Hawk County.

If you find a stray pet, you may bring it to the Intake building. The Intake building is located at 1166 West Airline Highway in Waterloo and operates from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. seven days a week.

There will be costs involved when you pick up your pet from CBHS. Fees help cover the daily expenses involved in caring for your pet. Each animal is given a bordetella vaccine to prevent whooping cough, provided food, shelter, and immediate medical care if needed. Applicable fees vary according to individual city contracts and where the pet was found. Please refer to the Cedar Bend Humane Society website for holding times and various fees. The easiest way to guarantee your pet is returned to you safely is to have them microchipped. If your pet is microchipped, please keep your contact information updated. Cedar Bend Humane Society offers microchipping for $35. Call 319-232-6887 to schedule an appointment. The procedure takes less than five minuntes and the life of your pet may depend on it!

If you choose to hold a lost animal while trying to find its owner, or your lost pet is not at the shelter, please complete a found or lost pet report available on the CBHS website. The information you provide will be posted on our website’s Found Pet or Lost Pet page for 30 days.

Cedar Bend Humane Society is a local, independent, private, non-profit 501c3 organization that is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. CBHS is dependent on contributions, in-kind donations, fundraising, retail store sales, grants, and fees for community services. We do NOT receive any funds from government monies, except from service contracts. We do not receive any tax dollars. For the fiscal year ending June 30th, 2015, Cedar Bend Humane Society operated on an $881,000 annual budget. Please note our charts to show the expense and revenue breakdowns. On June 15th, Bruce Earnest, a representative with the ASPCA, presented the Cedar Bend Humane Society direc-tors and staff with a Recognition of Excellence plaque. The inscription on the plaque reads: Recognition of Excellence. The ASPCA acknowledges Cedar Bend Humane Society of Waterloo, Iowa for their invaluable support in

providing cruelty victims with second chances. Dogs from the Florida hoarding rescue, South Carolina and West Virginia dog fighting raids, Alabama puppy mill and the Arkansas hoarding rescue were welcomed into your shelter.
