PICTURE RE-TAKE DAY IS OCTOBER 9!
We expect school pictures to arrive and be sent home any day now.
If your student didn’t get their picture taken, be sure to mark October 9 down on your
calendar for picture re-take day. All students who didn’t get their picture taken must get their
picture taken on October 9 in order to be included in the yearbook, so even if you don’t intend to order any
pictures, all students will have their picture taken this year.
If your student had their picture taken and you want to have the picture re-taken, all you need to do is send
the entire original picture packet to school on picture re-take day. Your student will turn those pictures
back in to the photographer, and get new pictures taken.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Dear Cedar Canyon Families,
It is hard to believe that it is October already here! The leaves are beginning to turn colors and the crisp, cool autumn
mornings are coming. School is in full swing, and we are almost to the end of the first quarter. I love to see the children
bound off the busses each morning, full of smiles and hugs, and ready to learn. Thank you for sharing them with us each
day!
Parent/Teach Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be on Friday, October 18th. The teachers will discuss report cards and NWEA reports
with you on that day. Although the students won’t attend school, we are looking forward to meeting with each one of
you. Teachers will be sending home information soon with your scheduled time. If you would like to meet with the art,
music, or PE teacher, please email them for an appointment. Working together is crucial to the success of all students.
Lifeskill Focus
In continuing with our school wide focus of “A Healthy You” students were introduced to
our next Lifeskill focus during out Falcon Factor on Friday. During the month of October,
Cedar Canyon will be focusing on the Lifeskill of Wellness. I introduced “The Kid’s
Activity Pyramid” to the students during our Falcon Factor which provides students with
ideas on how to stay active at home. If you search this in google, you will find a copy. In
addition to this, teachers will talk with students about how to take care of their body and
mind. We will finish off this month with our Falcon Fitness Day, which includes a one mile
walk/run. Please take some time to talk to your child/ren about wellness and what this could
look like at home.
Digital Citizenship
Safety is an important aspect of our schools. We focus on multiple types of drills to help ensure students know how to
keep themselves safe. We discuss ways to keep them safe in our environment. In addition to this, we feel that it is
important to provide the students with education on how to keep themselves safe while using their electronic devices.
During the week of October 14th, teachers will be going over important lessons revolving around digital citizenship.
Please talk with your student regarding topics that they are discussing in class. It is always good to be on the same page
with your student.
Weather Changes
Fall is here and the weather changes quickly. As the cooler temperatures roll in, please be sure that your child is dressed
for the day’s conditions. We go outside for recess most days, weather permitting, until the temperature drops below 10
degrees. Please consider sending a sweatshirt/jacket for the mornings, as it can be cool.
I hope that you have a wonderful month and enjoy the beautiful fall weather and activities.

A SCRIPT FROM THE CLINIC
As we approach flu season there are several things to keep in mind. Reminding your kids the importance of frequent
hand washing and to cough into their sleeves/ arm bent at the elbow and not into their hands are good things to review
with them. NACS has policies described below that are to be followed and are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to everyone’s
health and wellbeing.
Do not send your child to school when symptoms of illness (fever, undiagnosed rash, constant cough, diarrhea, vomiting,
etc) are present. A child MUST BE fever free (below 100) without medication (Tylenol, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, etc) and
symptom free (see above symptoms) for 24 HOURS BEFORE RETURNING TO SCHOOL.
A child requires 24 hours of medication before returning to school for pink eye, strep throat and impetigo. In the case of
chickenpox, all lesions must be completely scabbed over and the child is fever free for 24hours before the child can
return to school. If your child has any contagious disease (strep, pink eye, impetigo, fifth’s disease, chickenpox, scabies,
head lice, etc) please notify me.
If there is ever a question about your child returning to school due to an illness, please call me. I am at school every day
from 8 to 2:30.
Please be aware of the weather and the changing temperatures this time of year brings. The kids will continue to go out
to recess as the weather changes. Recess takes place outside as long as the wind chill is above 10 degrees and it is not
raining. I have a limited number of coats and outerwear in the clinic. Please be sure your child has what is needed for
the weather that day.
Occasionally a student spills something on them or has an accident that requires a change of clothes. If your child comes
home with different clothes please wash and return them as soon as possible.
Vision Screening will take place over the next couple months for grades 1,3,and 5. I hope to have these completed by
the end of November. First graders will also have a more in depth screening done by an eye professional in early
November. A notice will be sent home with your student if further testing by an eye professional is recommended.
I wish everyone a happy, healthy fall!

- *Students have been working on the elements of art through art projects using a variety of 2D mediums. Most classes have focused on the elements of line, shape, and texture. Fall artwork demonstrating the use of these elements will be displayed near the art room through the month of October. *FAME has chosen to celebrate the culture of South America this year. In the art room students will begin to listen to the FAME FUSION music selection while creating expressive art inspired by this music. We will continue to integrate lessons focusing on South America through the year. You may visit www.famearts.org to learn more about this year’s FAME and Fusion.
- *Please help us with any recyclable materials you have collected by returning the following items to the art room. Students may drop off the following items in the box just outside the art room: plastic coffee cans, egg cartons, plastic bags, and paper bags. Thank you!
Music Notes with Mrs. Weidner
It’s hard to believe that we’re wrapping up quarter one already! We have been hard at work in music class. Here is
what each grade has been working on this quarter:
K- Steady beat vs. no steady beat, using our singing, speaking, whispering, and shouting voices
1- Beat vs. rhythm and dynamics (the volume of music)
2- Quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests
3- We have been working on a project that will teach us something- a lot of groups have been using music and
instruments to teach Spanish numbers, how to say hello in different languages, or states that start with the
letter M.
4- We have been composing 4 measures of music with known rhythms and the notes on the treble clef. We
have been playing our compositions on xylophones.
5- We have been composing 4 measures of music with known rhythms and the notes on the treble clef. We
have been playing our compositions on xylophones.
Band- We have been hard at work learning the first three notes on our instruments and getting a great sound.
Your students should be bringing their instruments home and practicing in their books.
You will notice that each class students will receive a grade in PowerSchool on a scale from 0-4. The effort assignment
will be labeled as week_class_ (example: w2.1 = week 2, class 1). Students may also get a grade based on the other state
standards- singing, playing, and reading and writing music. The grading scale is based on the NACS report card scores as
listed in the elementary handbook. Additionally, I will give a student a 0/4 if the student refuses to participate or will
not try the activity, even given modifications or accommodations I use to help make the student feel more at ease. My
goal is always to help students feel comfortable taking risks in music class. While they may not always love the activity
or want to perform for others, performing for others is a state standard we assess and speaking in front of others is an
important life skill to acquire.
It’s almost time for some of our classes to start working on their musicals! We are excited to announce that fifth grade
will be performing Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Jr musical in May! Third and Fourth grades will have a winter program
on Thursday, December 5, and First and Second grades will perform on Thursday, March 5. We are looking forward to
putting on great music for you!
