By best estimates, it was in January 1868 that a newborn boy was found abandoned in a driving stable behind the inn in Shakespeare. Perth County’s First Tavern Keeper. Sebastian Fryfogel (1791-1873) came to Upper Canada from Switzerland via the United States in 1827. He was the first tavern keeper of present day Perth County. In the mid-1800s the Fryfogel family had their own cemetery in the middle of a field nearby. Circa 1923, to save the cemetery from the plough, the gravestones were moved to the grounds of the Fryfogel Inn. Descendants of the Fryfogel family continue to farm in the area. Coming to Listowel in 1860, John Livingstone with an “e” (1811-1899) was among the earliest and most prosperous merchants. He left Scotland for Canada in 1840, the same time his brother David left to explore Africa finding the source of the Nile River. John retired in 1873 and died in 1899 at 88 years of age, TO “E” OR NOT TO “E”. YES, THERE WERE TWO EARLY PIONEERS IN LISTOWEL WITH THE NAME JOHN LIVINGSTON(E). BOTH WERE PROMINENT BUSINESSMEN, ORIGINALLY FROM SCOTLAND, WITH WELL-KNOWN BROTHERS. John Livingston Without the “E”. Brother of James, of Castle Kilbride fame, John Livingston (1834-1896) came to Canada from East Kilbride, Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1834. In 1869 he and James moved to Listowel to build their flax empire; J&J Livingston Dominion Linseed Oil Co. became the largest company of its kind in Canada, earning the brothers the title of “The Flax Kings of Canada.” John Livingston died suddenly in 1896. Oldest Legible Stone at Fairview Cemetery. Little is known of the Delyea family other than the family was from Elma township just outside Listowel. There are no obituaries for the infant Eliza, or her parents as their deaths predate any local newspapers of the time. Two siblings of Eliza, Annie and William share the same stone as their parents. Murder Victim Jessie Keith. The victim of “the most diabolical crime ever recorded in this country,” fourteen year old Jessie Keith (1880-1894) was attacked and murdered on October 19, 1894.The findings were so horrific, alarmed authorities cabled Scotland Yard in Britain to see if Jack the Ripper had been caught – or could he be in Canada. Listowel’s First Settler Outlives Three Wives. In 1852, John Binning (1812-1899) made his way from England to Hamilton and then into the Queen's Bush with his wife and one year old son. With nothing more than two barrels of flour, meat, one axe, two augers and a saw, Binning began his new life in the wilds of Listowel. He outlived three wives, had numerous children and died in 1899 at the age of 87. WW1 Flying Ace Single-Handedly Takes Down 9 German Planes. Known as “The King of the Two Seaters”, Major Andrew McKeever (1895-1919) was the world's leading two-seater ace shooting down 30 confirmed aircraft. He flew a Bristol two-seater from May 1917 to January 1918. In addition to the Military Cross and Bar, McKever was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for bravery against such odds and for photographic reconnaissance work which proved to be very valuable. Sir John A. MacDonaldAccompanies Body to Train Station.A Liberal member of parliament, RobertMacFarlane (1835-1872) represented the PerthSouth riding in the first parliament of the newDominion of Canada in 1867. He died in office in1872, at thirty-seven years of age and is buried here with his infantson. Stratford's local paper The Beacon Herald, reported that “thefuneral was perhaps the most imposing ever witnessed in town.”

Stratford Holds High Court. D.H. Lizars (1822-1894) was called to the bar in 1853 andbegan his professional career in Goderich andStratford. He was appointed County Attorney in1858. His wide knowledge of the law and hismastery of its principles earned him a summonsto the County bench in 1864, followed in 1877 by a master inchancery and local Judge of the High Court of Justice in 1882.

Monte Goes to Ottawa. From 1957 to 1963 J. Waldo Monteith (1903-1981) or “Monte” as his friendscalled him served as the Minister of National Health andWelfare. He also became financial critic and chairman ofthe Progressive Conservative caucus. Monteith famouslyremarked to Lester Pearson that 'you must be nuts!' afterPearson presumed to ask Tories to give up their fight to

keep Canada's Red Ensign. In the 70s Monte was awarded the Silver Jubilee Medal in hishometown Stratford for contributing to his community. He lived out his days peacefully inStratford and died December 19, 1981.

Founder of Stratford ShakespeareFestival. At a time when the introduction ofdiesel locomotives was eroding Stratford’s placeas a steam-based railway centre, Tom Patterson(1920-2005) created a Shakespearean festival onthe banks of the Avon River kick-starting thetransformation of his home town.

Oldest Judge in Canada Dies at 87. Graduating with a law degree from the University of Toronto in 1864, John Idington(1840-1928) settled in Stratford where he practised for 40 years.He was appointed to the High Court of Justice of Ontario in 1904and the Supreme Court of Canada in 1905. Idington was a liberaljurist and a frequent dissenter, but his refusal to retire, well into his80s and allegedly senile, was the spark for the law requiring judgesto retire at 75. He died in 1928, a few months into his forcedretirement.

WW1 Nurse Buried With Full Military Honours.Elsie Gertrude Ross (1883-1916), a nursing sister in the Canadian Army Medical Corps in World War I died of pneumonia while serving at a convalescent hospital. Miss Ross’sname appears in the Canadian First World War Book of Remembrance.

Former Actor and Artistic Director of theStratford Shakespeare Festival A recipient of the Queen's Golden and Silver Jubilee Medals, RichardMonette (1944-2008) was named to the Order of Canada in1997. His association with the Stratford Festival began in 1965,where he played more than 40 roles. From the late 1980sonward, directing became the new focus of his career. In

1994, his 23rd season with the Festival, he became Artistic Director. During his 14 years asArtistic Director, he produced the entire Shakespearean canon.

Stratford Parks System Founder.R. Thomas Orr (1870-1957) was a lifelong memberof the Stratford parks board and the driving forcebehind this city’s parks system. In 1912-13 he ledthe fight to save the Avon riverfront and millpondfrom railway development and oversaw thetransformation of the industrial area into parkland.

Manuel Rises to InternationalFame with The Band. Immortalizedin Martin Scorsese’s film, The Last Waltz,Richard Manuel (1943-1986) or “Beak” ashe was nicknamed by friends, was thelegendary piano player for The Band. Hetoured with rock masters Ronnie Hawkins, and Bob Dylan until

he and Levon Helm formed The Band in 1970. While only reaching #30 on the Billboardcharts, The Band’s first album would be profoundly influential upon the nascent country-rockmovement; “Tears of Rage” and “The Weight” would rank among the most covered songsof the epoch. Manuel died while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine in 1986.

Local Drummer Makes it Big WithRonnie Hawkins. Jim Winkler (1942-1999) was the drummer for Richard Manuel’s band The Revols.Formed in 1957, the then fourteen and fifteen year oldband members gained popularity in Ontario at one oftheir first gigs opening for Ronnie Hawkins' band TheHawks. Hawkins later hired them as his band.

TRAVEL BACK TO THE PAVED ROAD TO SECTION 25B. WILLIAM HUTT'S LARGE STONE MONUMENT IS TOYOUR RIGHT.

Canada’s Class Act.Mr. Hutt joined theStratford Shakespearean Festival during its inauguralseason in 1953 and continued to tread the boardsuntil 2005. Appearing in over 100 plays, Hutt was theconsummate actor playing both fools and kings,and tragic as well as comic leads. He won everymajor theatre award in Canada, as well as a Governor General'sAward for lifetime achievement, and was made a companion of theOrder of Canada. William Hutt died at the age of 87 in 2007.

God's Holy Acre, Stratford's EarliestCemetery. Beside this lovely Early DecoratedGothic style church is God’s Holy Acre, a cemeteryused between 1844 and 1871. The gravestones,including one of the Sargint family (owner of theShakespeare Inn around which Stratford wasfounded), a brother and his son, have been laid flat to reducedeterioration. Built in 1870, St. James is the official church of the Crown.The tower, home to 11 bells, was added in 1905. NOT ON MAP.

Titanic Victim’s Body Recovered.Booking passage on the maiden voyage ofthe wonderful new White Star steam liner,Titanic, George Graham (1873-1912) wasanxious to return to Canada to be with his wife,who was unwell. He was one of many victimsof the Titanic when it struck an iceberg, April 14, 1912. His bodynow rests with his wife and young son in the St. Marys Cemetery.

Canada’s Ninth Prime Minister. ArthurMeighen (1874-1960) was an excellent debater,skilled in analysis and knowledge of parliamentaryrules, but his uncompromising stands on issuestended to alienate people. Meighen's mostmemorable accomplishments were achieved as acabinet minister in the government of Sir Robert Borden, rather thanas Prime Minister of Canada, and the legacy of some of thoseunpopular moves did not help him as Prime Minister. As acting Minister

of Justice, Arthur Meighen was involved in suppressing the Winnipeg General Strike in 1919,which alienated a large part of the labour movement. He was also responsible for thecreation of the Canadian National Railways.

Tolpuddle Martyr Freed andImmigrates to Canada. James Brine(1812-1902) was one of six men identified as amember of the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Known asheroes for attempting to form a union of farmlabourers in the village of Tolpuddle, Dorset,England in 1834, a major protest forced the government to havethe men freed when they were arrested, sentenced and

transported to Australia as convicted labourers. THIS CONCLUDES THE ST. MARYS PORTION.
