The first, Going Inward: The role of cultural introspection in college teaching, with co-author Alicia F. Chavez, introduces readers to cultural self- reflection as a powerful tool for insight into how our values and beliefs from our cultural and familial upbringing influence our teaching practice. The second, Teaching Across Cultural Strengths: A guide to balancing integrated and individual cultural frameworks in college teaching, also with co-author Alicia R. Chavez, is a guide intended for all faculty, faculty developers or administrators in higher education concerned with equitable outcomes in higher education and with ensuring that all student cultural groups learn and graduate at the same rates. Greenwell Selected to Receive the Stotlar Award Chris Greenwell, Professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, was selected by the Sport Marketing Association (SMA) to receive the 2016 Stotlar Award. This prestigious national award was established to honor and recognize a sport marketing educator who reflects the mission of SMA through the promotion and advancement of doctoral students in the discipline. He will study criminal justice, international relations, and talent acquisition while he is a student in the CEHD, and works in the McConnell Center. This is the third year for the UofL program. Cooper Elected VP of CCBDJustin Cooper, Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education, was elected as Vice President of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders (CCBD), which is an international organization dedicated to improving educational practices for children with emotional

Laman and CEHD Alumna Project Featured by Local News and JCPSTasha Tropp Laman, Director of the Nystrand Center and Associate Professor in the Department of Early Childhood and Elementary Education, and Janelle Henderson, a graduate of the MAT in Early Elementary Education and second grade teacher at J.B. Atkinson Academy were recently featured

on WLKY news. Henderson’s class had been studying the life of Muhammad Ali through children’s literature while learning what makes them the greatest. Muhammad Ali’s brother, Rahman Ali, visited Henderson’s class to talk with them about the legendary boxer and philanthropist. Henderson and Dr. Laman are partners on a project titled, “National Council Teachers of English and Culturally Responsive Professional Dyads. See the news story... The September issue of the Jefferson County Public Schools’ (JCPS) Envision Equity magazine featured Dr. Tropp Laman’s Dyads project as well. See page 5 in the magazine...

Cumberland and Immekus to Partner with OVEC on Hi-Q2 ProjectDenise Cumberland, Assistant Professor, and Jason Immekus, Associate Professor, both in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development (ELEOD), received a grant to conduct an evaluation of the perceived quality and effectiveness of the Ohio Valley Educational Cooperative (OVEC) professional development of the Hi-Q2 Math project. Students’ mathematics achievement (e.g., interim assessments,

end-of-grade test scores) data will be used to determine the extent to which the training may influence teachers’ classroom practices related to promoting academic achievement. Qualitative data will include interview data from OVEC professional development participants, which will be based on semi-structured interview questions gathered from focus groups conducted three times over one year.

BOT Approves CIBRSDuring their September meeting, the UofL Board of Trustees (BOT) officially approval for the CEHD’s new Center for Instructional and Behavioral Research in Schools (CIBRS). Terry Scott, Distinguished University Scholar and Professor in the Department of Special Education, is the center director. CIBRS will promote and fund research and community

outreach related to the prevention of student failures in educational settings, whether it is academic, social, health, or mental health.

CEHD Faculty on UofL Today ShowThe following CEHD faculty were guests on the radio show, UofL Today with Mark Hebert: --Sept. 6th, Jenny Bay-Williams, Professor and Chair in the Department of Middle and Secondary Education, discussed innovative ways to teach math. --Sept. 13th, Mary Hums, Professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, spoke about her research and experiences with the Paralympics. Ingle Attends AERA Division L MeetingIn September, Kyle Ingle, Assistant Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development, attended the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) Division L (Educational Policy and Politics) Planning Meeting,

which was held at the University of Virginia. Dr. Ingle is serving a second year as Chair of the Human Capital and School Finance Section. He and his fellow section Chairs met to develop the program for the 2017 annual AERA meeting that will be held in San Antonio, TX in April.

Mooneyhan Receives KYA AwardLeon Mooneyhan, CEO of OVEC, UofL Overseer, and CEHD Advisory Board member, was presented the inaugural Kentucky Youth Advocates (KYA) Courage for Kids Award for his years as an educator and supporter of KYA.

Vidoni Presents at University São PauloCarla Vidoni, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences, was invited to present, “Analysis of Social Competence in Physical Education,” at the School of Physical Education and Sport at the University of São Paulo, and, “Professional Master’s Degree in

Education: Experience in the United States,” at the Center of Education and Human Sciences at the Federal University of São Carlos in São Paula, Brazil. In addition, she served on a master’s thesis committee for Felipe Gustavo Santos Canciglieri, a physical education student at the School of Education and Movement Sciences at the State University of São Paulo in Brazil.

Caruso Receives NSF FundingJohn Caruso, Professor in the Department of Health and Sport Sciences' Exercise Physiology program, received $2,500 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps program (NASA/ Kentucky Space Grant Consortium). His study will assess muscle and bone changes that result from

a 10-week exercise program done on a novel prototype machine, which provides resistance without the requirement of gravity to operate.

Nisbett Appointed to COSWDesrie Nisbett, Unit Business Manager for the Department of Teaching and Learning, was appointed by President Pinto as a Commissioner with the Commission on the Status of Women (COSW). She will serve a three-year term.

Rose to Serve on OLC PanelDr. Kevin Rose, Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Evaluation and Organizational Development’s (ELEOD) Organizational Leadership and Learning program, was selected to serve on an expert panel for the Online Learning Consortium Research Study for Online Faculty Practice. ELEOD has been recognized in several rankings for having leading online programs. Dr. Rose’s work with the panel will lead to a national Quality Scorecard for the Online Faculty Practice. • Lali McCubbin, Associate Professor in ECPY, and Bridget Cauley, a doctoral student in the CSP with a specialization in counseling psychology, presented, “Coping Health Inventory for Parents among Caregivers of Children with Chronic Illnesses in Mexico,” and “Psychometric Properties of the Resilience Scale among Caregivers of Children with Chronic Illnesses.”

• Kaylyn Watterson, a master's and doctoral student in the CSP program with a specialization in counseling psychology, and Mark Leach presented, “Spirituality and Religiosity as Unique Predictors of Posttraumatic Growth.”

Bianca Nightengale-Lee, Holmes scholar and doctoral student in the Curriculum and Instruction program, received a grant from the Conference on English Education (CEE), which is a division of the National Council for Teachers of English (NCTE) to do her dissertation work. Only four grants are awarded each year from the CEE division. Her dissertation is titled, “Educating Critically: Intersectionality of Critical Pedagogy in the Literacy Methods Classroom."

Seneca High School Listed Among Best Practice SchoolsSeneca High School, a Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) Priority School and CEHD partner school, was listed among the Kentucky Department of Education’s Best Practice Schools for their PLC process, Aligning Standards, Targets, and Assessments. CEHD faculty members working in the school are Sheron Mark, Lateefah Id Deen, Assistant Professors, Shelley Thomas, Associate Professor, and Amy Stevens, all with the Department of Middle and Secondary Education. They are part of the CARDS to CREATE grant work, for which Harrie Buecker, Nystrand Center Liaison for School and District Partnerships, is the PI. See the news release…

Alumni NewsKate McAnulty, a graduate of the PhD program in Counseling and Personnel Services, was recently selected as the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at the California Institute of Technology.

Fashaad Crawford, a graduate of the PhD program in Educational Leadership and Organizational Development, was recently selected as the Vice Provost of Accreditation and Assessment at North Carolina State University.

Kentucky Teacher Achievement Award Winners AnnouncedThe Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and Valvoline™ announced the 2017 Valvoline Teacher Achievement Award winners and three CEHD graduates are among those selected: Jennifer O’Daniel, MAT in Secondary Education with a concentration in Spanish and teacher at Olive Hill Elementary School; Kip Hottman, MEd in Counseling and Personnel Services with a specialization in Secondary School Counseling and teacher at Fern Creek High School; Tricia Shelton, currently enrolled in the PhD in Curriculum and Instruction program and teacher at Boone County High School. They are now qualified to compete for the 2017 Kentucky Teacher of the Year Award, which will be announced in late October. See the KDE news release...

counseling and personnel services (CSP) program with a specialization in counseling psychology, Jill Adelson, Associate Professor, and Patrick Pössel, Professor, presented, "Examining Socio-emotional Well-being and Mathematics Attitudes in Elementary School Boys and Girls."

• Sarah Roane, a doctoral student in the CSP program with a specialization in counseling psychology, and Patrick Pössel, presented, "Depression in Family Caregivers of Cancer Patients."
