20 YearsCelebrateThe Elisabeth Morrow SchoolSummer String Festival 2015

Preparation for the FestivalTo ensure an appropriate mix of players in the four orchestras and junior cello, junior violin and harp ensembles, ALL applicants will audition LIVE for the faculty. All young players will be asked to perform a scale, an arpeggio and a polished piece of their choice. New applicants at the orchestra level will receive a musical work to prepare and perform during the audition. This audition is to determine acceptance to the program and if the EMS Summer String Festival can meet the individual needs of each participant. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept every child who auditions for this program. In the first week of June, students will receive a letter of acceptance and the music that they will be expected to learn for the Festival. All Festival participants are expected to have lessons throughout the summer and arrive at the Festival with their music prepared at their highest level.Orchestra (for older students) Each orchestra rehearses daily. In addition, participants practice together in small groups of 8–12 students called sectionals. They work on the individual parts of their music to improve the overall quality of the orchestra.

Celebrate 20 years of music, friends and fun!The Elisabeth Morrow School Summer String Festival is a musically enriching, fun-filled week of music for motivated and experienced violinists, violists, cellists, harpists and bassists.

Activities include daily orchestra and sectional rehearsals, repertoire and duet classes, as well as student recitals and performances by guest artists. Aspiring musicians also participate in sports, art, drama, movement, computer and puppetry classes.

The Festival culminates with performances by students, counselors and faculty.

Throughout the week, string players enjoy memorable opportunities for musicianship at the only program of its kind in the metropolitan area.

Special Festival Events (all students) Guest Artist Performance — Performing musicians give workshops varying from jazz and klezmer to classical and rock music. All participants meet and work with the guest artists and are inspired by hearing music in a new and exciting way.

Supervised practice (all students)Music faculty and counselors, all of whom are string players, assist participants in daily practice sessions.

Junior ensemble class (for younger students)Students practice and perform new pieces and previously learned pieces in groups. The class studies pieces from The Suzuki Method books numbers one through three and/or the duet repertoire.

The Gala Concert (all students)The EMS Summer String Festival concludes with a gala concert that showcases all four orchestras, as well as the junior violin, junior cello and harp ensembles. The program finale includes a performance of Canon in D by Pachelbel played by all the students, counselors and teachers.

Celebrate 20 years of music, friends and fun!
