40 Gardens West June 2013 Celebrate Canada’s First National Garden Day By Larry Hodgson There’s no need to tell anyone who buys or subscribes to this magazine that Canadians are fervent gardeners! So why not dedicate one day a year to celebrating our national pastime? And that’s the whole point of a brand new event: Canada’s very first National Garden Day, to take place on June 14, 2013, the Friday preceding Father’s Day. This new day of garden rejoicing is an initiative of the Canadian Garden Council and sponsored by the Canadian Nursery Landscape Association and Communities in Bloom. This very first National Garden Day will see numerous events across the country in celebration of Canada’s public gardens and home gardening and will also act as the public launch of Canada’s Garden Route for the season. The events will include activities for garden- ing enthusiasts, families, schools and tourists. Many will take place specifically on National Garden Day, and some will extend throughout the weekend. Here are some examples of what several public gardens are doing for National Garden Day: Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden The MUN Botanical Garden is offering free admission to the garden on Friday, June 14 as well as a special National Garden Day program of free activi- ties including garden tours, a Family Nature Program (10:30-11:30am) and a nature hike (2:30-3:30pm). Toronto Botanical Garden The Toronto Botanical Garden will be offering its brand new handheld audio tour, a $5 value, for free on National Garden Day (10am-4pm): you just need to mention “National Garden Day” at the TBG gift shop to be offered the free tour. And the public will be offered, free of charge, benefits usually limited to TBG members, including a 10% discount in the boutique garden shop and free copies of Trellis magazine while supplies last. These offers are good only on June 14. Niagara Parks The Niagara Parks Commission has several National Garden Day activities to mention. For one, it will be in the midst of the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the opening of Queen Victory Park (it will continue through the weekend to June 16th) and the annual Regal Geranium Show will be in full swing at the Floral Showhouse greenhouse (admission: $5). Check with your nearby public garden to see what they have planned for June 14th. From BC all the way to PEI, there’s bound to be something happening in your province. Please visit www.canadasgardenroute.ca for more information. And make sure you participate! With Father’s Day only two days away, why not invite Dad for a visit of a public garden... and bring the whole family with you? You’ll all enjoy the experience and make memories that will last a lifetime. Let’s all help make National Garden Day the huge Canada-wide garden festival it deserves to be!i The objective of the National Garden Day is, to quote the Canadian Garden Council itself, “to counteract plant blindness syndrome” by bringing awareness to: 1. The importance of public and private gardens 2. The value of home gardening 3. The benefits related to gardens 4. The promotion of environmental stewardship Fun for the whole family awaits at the Memorial University of NFLD Botanical Garden. PHOTO COURTESY MEMORIAL UNIVERSITY OF NEWFOUNDLAND BOTANICAL GARDEN

Celebrate Canada’s First National Garden DayBy Larry Hodgson

There’s no need to tell anyone who buys or subscribes to this magazine that Canadians are fervent gardeners!

The events will include activities for garden-ing enthusiasts, families, schools and tourists. Many will take place specifically on National Garden Day,

and some will extend throughout the weekend.

Here are some examples of what several public gardens are doing for National Garden Day:

Memorial University ofNewfoundland Botanical GardenThe MUN Botanical Garden is offering free admission to the garden on Friday, June 14 as well as a special National Garden Day program of free activi-ties including garden tours, a Family Nature Program (10:30-11:30am) and a nature hike (2:30-3:30pm).

And the public will be offered, free of charge, benefits usually limited to TBG members, including a 10% discount in the boutique garden shop and free copies of Trellis magazine while supplies last. These offers are good only on June 14.

Niagara ParksThe Niagara Parks Commission has several National Garden Day activities to mention. For one, it will be in the midst of the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the opening of Queen Victory Park (it will continue through the weekend to June 16th) and the annual Regal Geranium Show will be in full swing at the Floral Showhouse greenhouse (admission: $5).
