LGBT WEDDING GUIDE | SPRING / SUMMER 2014 5
MINNEAPOLIS IS EXCITED TO HOST YOUR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE, as we have al-ways been one of the most heralded LGBT communities in the nation.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR A MAR-RIAGE LICENSE? The Hennepin County marriage li-cense webpage has everything you need in terms of information on how to apply for a marriage license. They address how to apply, what to bring, the fee and any additional information that you'll find helpful.
WHEN CAN I GET MARRIED? The bill went in to effect August 1, 2013. Marriage license applications for same-sex couples are available in Hennepin, Washington and Ramsey counties. A marriage license obtained in one county is good anywhere in
Minnesota. Check with your local service center for additional details. After applying for a marriage license, you must wait the mandatory five (5) days.
CAN I GET MARRIED IN MIN-NEAPOLIS EVEN IF I DON'T LIVE HERE?Of course. Anyone from any state or country can come to Minneapolis to be wed.
CAN MY SPOUSE AND I GET MARRIED IN MINNEAPOLIS IF WE WERE ALREADY MARRIED SOMEWHERE ELSE? No. However, while you are unable to be remarried to the same person, your marriage license from another state or country will be legally recog-nized as valid in Minnesota. You can have a ceremony and celebration, but you can't apply for a second marriage license.
ARE THERE ANY DIFFERENC-ES BETWEEN SAME-SEX AND OPPOSITE-SEX MARRIAGES? No, however there is a difference at the federal level. The state no longer recognizes any differences between same-sex and opposite-sex mar-riages and the benefits, rights and responsibilities of being married. For more information, please seek legal counsel.
WILL OUR MARRIAGE IN MIN-NEAPOLIS BE RECOGNIZED OUTSIDE OF MINNESOTA? 17 other states have legalized same-sex marriage. California, Connecti-cut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island, Ver-mont and Washington D.C. will all legally recognize your marriage per-formed in other states as a civil union. Other states will vary.

ARE THERE ANY DIFFERENCES IN THE MARRIAGE PROCESS BETWEEN SAME-SEX AND OP-POSITE-SEX COUPLES?No. The process is the same between the two marriages.
CAN WE CHOOSE TO BE DO-MESTIC PARTNERS INSTEAD OF GETTING MARRIED? Yes, you can still choose to be domes-tic partners. However, domestic part-ners receive a smaller set of rights than married couples.
WHERE IN MINNEAPOLIS CAN WE GET MARRIED? Anywhere. And, we've got a list of unique venues that we're sure you'll love. Please note, though, that under 363A.26 of the same-sex marriage law, religious institutions have the right to refuse service to any couple regardless of sexual orientation.
