SEVERNA PARK HIGH SCHOOL 60 Robinson Road, Severna Park, MD 21146 Spring 2016 Congratulations to Ivan George & the James and Sylvia Earl Simulation to Advance Innovation and Learning Center (SAIL) at AAMC This year, one of our amazing Signature Business partners has been awarded both the SPHS Business Partner of the Year and the Anne Arundel County Public Schools Business Partner of the Year Award! The SAIL Center is the first SIM center in the world to open it’s doors to high school students throughout AA county for internships and meaningful opportunities in the medical and business fields. University of Delaware Diamond Challenge & YES! Summit — International Champions! Twenty-two countries, 17 states and over 1000 students competed in this year’s Diamond Challenge for Young Entrepreneurs. During the final round, on April 15th, 2016, Seniors Gabe Werner and Nathan Wagner competed in the “Shark Tank” style competition. Their five minute presentation won 1 st prize for a total awards package of $10,000. They also received a $1, 000 scholarship to attend Catapult which is a startup incubator located in NYC for the world’s most promising high school entrepreneurs. During the Preliminary Round at Anne Arundel Community College, four teams from Severna Park High School competed. The students worked in small teams to prepare and submit a written concept for a business, present a five-minute pitch, and answer any questions about their concepts. A panel of professionals reviewed the written submissions, pitches, and responses ruling two teams from Severna Park High School 1 st and 2 nd place winners, sweeping the competition. First place winners were Hannah Nicholson and Erica Morgan Szymanski. They were awarded $500 and a Ratcliff Scholarship to AACC for $10,000 each. The second place winners Gabe Werner and Nathan Wagner were awarded $500. 2016 Signature Faculty Business Field Trip

On February 18th

three local businesses hosted the Signature

Committee members for the purpose of helping teachers make

real-world connections to business within each of their content

areas.

Stop: Priority World Wide Services of Hanover, Maryland.

Teachers had a great time learning about the world of Global

Logistics. This business proves that you can be green, protect

Stop: Westin BWI Airport to meet with different departments

within the hospitality industry. Not only did teachers get a full

course on what makes a hotel profitable, they were also treated to

Stop: the Chesapeake Innovation Center of Odenton, Maryland.

Just outside the gates of Fort Meade lies a business incubator that

houses many new innovative businesses and tech companies. This

trip proved to be very inspiring for the Signature Committee who

had a chance to meet with several of the companies that are

growing right here in Anne Arundel County! For more information

Meet the new BIL Explorations Capstone champions!

SPHS Business, Innovation and Leadership Signature

Capstone Champions for 2016 are Gabriella Higgins,

Sydney Clasen, Daniel Brack and Autumn Mento. They are

Students solving real problems for real businesses.

During the course, students completed the culminating

task by developing a marketing plan for the AACPS internship

portal ,which will become part of a student run business.

The business will be housed and run out of the new

school building, complete with office start-up space.

Chick-fil-a Leader Academy makes a big impact on the

community in its first year. Packaging meals for

foodbanks, lunches for the Lighthouse shelter, a drive

for of toiletries/clothing and collecting funds for the

United Way in support of Maryland 2-1-1.
