Editor’s Note2015 has gone by really quickly, and we are now looking forward to our upcoming 60th anniversary in 2016!

It has been an exciting year, with MDIS bagging its first Enterprise 50 award, which recognises efforts in innovation and enterprise in Singapore and beyond. It is truly a testament to our pursuit of excellence.

In another first, the MDIS Career Assistance Unit organised its Virtual Career Fair with much success and enabled both employers and candidates to have a convenient platform with all the benefits of a physical job fair.

We are equally proud of Yuna Yun, a graduate from the School of Fashion and Design, whose creations were showcased at the Mercedes Benz STYLO Asia Fashion Week held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

As we close the year with several Graduation Ceremonies, our heartiest congratulations go to all our deserving graduates and we wish them the best as they scale new heights.

From all of us at MDIS, here’s wishing you a great year ahead!

Secret to Success Revealed

Dr. R Theyvendran shows MDIS-University of Bradford cohort how to rock their stage.

Page 7: celebrating 10 years of successful partnership unique model in the

On 22nd November 2015, MDIS-University of Bradford’s graduands celebrated their completion of studies at the Suntec City Convention Centre. Mr Baey Yam Keng, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, graced the event as Guest-of-Honour.

529 graduands across 9 faculties were conferred their degrees by Professor Robert Parkin, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, University of Bradford.

Dr. R Theyvendran, in his speech reminded the graduands of their new identity as skilled individuals, equipped with values, skills and knowledge that were acquired from their degree programmes.

Letting the graduands in on a secret to success, he said: “The world is your stage, and will be successful as long as you make it to be. But first, you have to find your passion, which is the energy within you that spurs you to do your best. It usually appears when

you enjoy what you do. When these two passions meet, giving your best becomes second nature, and success will naturally follow.”

Top student of the cohort, Choy Mun Kit, paid tribute to lecturer, Mr Lim Kian Soon. “His technique of simplifying issues helped me tremendously in taking on the questions and solving them. He spurred us to look for solutions ourselves, while using his pointers as guides,” he said in his speech.

MDIS prepares Oklahoma City University Graduatesfor Challenges Ahead

The 18th MDIS-Oklahoma City University Graduation ceremony was held on 10th October 2015 at Stamford Ballroom, Raffles City Convention Centre. The ceremony was attended by more than 100 graduates and over 200 guests.

Graced by Mr Vikram Nair, Member of Parliament for Sembawang GRC, he delivered a preview of what it’s like on the journey to success and self-fulfilment. “Talent and intelligence have never protected anyone from perversity of fate. The world at large is eager to show you its set of criteria. You may be in exploratory mode in your initial years after today, meeting plenty of crossroads and speed bumps before realising your true passion. The role that you play will be little at first but eventually, they will be significant steps to better the community and the country,” he commented.

Dr. R Theyvendran, MDIS Secretary-General, in his inspiring speech, encouraged graduates to dare to be different. Quoting Steve Jobs, he said: “Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes … the ones who see things differently – they’re not fond of rules, and they have no respect for the status quo.”

He added on being a people person: “As you embark on your career, you will come across people or colleagues, who may introduce new views, or different practices. Work with them, get along with them, and see their side of the story. You will acquire people skills, the most valued of all the skills which I know. Having these people skills, will put you in good stead in the next chapter of your life.”

Beyond all odds … Guest-of-Honour, Mr Alex Yam Ziming, Member of Parliament for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, delivered an inspiring and motivating speech at the graduation ceremony on 17th October 2015. He cited four examples to inspire the graduates not to give up in the face of adversities as failures are mere stepping stones to success.

Howard Schultz Howard Schultz, CEO of Starbucks was rejected a total of 242 times in his effort to get funding in 1980s to set up Starbucks.

Undeterred, he never gave up. Each time, he took away learning lessons from his experiences and made it better.

Finally, at the 243rd attempt, he succeeded in securing investors. Today, Starbucks is one of the largest food and beverage chains in the world.

Thomas Edison Thomas Edison did not do well in school and his teacher did not think he would amount to much.

He failed a thousand times in his efforts in inventing an inexpensive and long-lasting light bulb.

He kept on trying till he finally succeeded in finding a long-lasting filament.

Singaporean, Ms Charmaine Tan Closer to home, Mr Alex Yam shared an inspirational story of 21-year old, Charmaine Tan from his community:

When in secondary school, she woke up one morning and could not see well. A medical

examination revealed that she was slowly losing her kidney functions and her eyesight.

She never gave up and continued with school. She did well and went to Junior College.

However, her kidney continued to fail her, and she had only 5% of her eyesight left. With the help of the community, a donor was found on the condition that her mother must donate one of her kidneys to someone else. Sadly, just before the surgery, she had lost her sight completely.

Inspite of it, the doctors said that it is reversible and she may get back 10% - 15% of her sight if the kidney transplant is done fast. Unfortunately, Charmaine’s mom developed a fever and the surgery was called off, though her mom was keen to proceed.

Charmaine had chosen not to risk losing her mom and gave up on her only opportunity to have a kidney transplant. Her rationale, “I’m going to get a new kidney, I may go on for another 20-30 years, I may get some of my sight back. But the risk of losing my mother is not going to be worth gaining 10% - 15% of my sight”.

Despite having gone through so much, she still has a bright smile and is eager to learn.

Many of us will face stumbling blocks in our lives and careers, and there will be times when we feel down. However, Howard Schultz, Thomas Edison and Charmaine Tan, have all gone through tremendous challenges, more than we will ever face. The difference is that they never ever gave up.

Never Give Up Fifty years ago, Singapore gained her independence from Malaysia in 1965. We were a country with no resources and depended on Malaysia for our drinking water. There were people who said, “Give them (Singapore) two years and they will come groveling back to us.”

Looking back, we have achieved so much. Why? Because, Singaporeans made a commitment to never give up.

In closing, Mr Alex Yam shared a quote from our founding father, the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew. “To the young and the not-too-old, I say look at the horizon. Follow that rainbow, go ride it. Achieve much in your life, and achieve much for others”.

All emphasised that graduation was the new beginning and they needed to “Spread their wings” with confidence and conquer new heights with the knowledge they acquired in MDIS Tashkent and be valuable to the society.

Dr. R Theyvendran, Secretary-General, MDIS, urged the graduands to dare break into new grounds. He notes, “No diamonds are perfect unless they are cut and polished. Be proud of your growth and new status as a skilled and academically-qualified individual - ready to take on the next set of challenges.”

First-class honours graduate of BSc (Hons) in Banking and Finance, University of Wales, UK, Madina Nigmatova, touched the hearts of the audience with words. She said, “… all of us there have been through times of stress, the occasional moments of panic and some extremely challenging experiences. It has been a long four years, but here we are, ready to graduate.”

She added, “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to our parents who encouraged us to study here, have been by our side during this roller coaster ride of our university life and supported us on our journey in a million ways. We are very obliged to our teachers who demanded excellence from us, set the bar high and challenged us to live up to it. We will be forever grateful for the generosity of your knowledge, time, talent and your constant, never ending support.”

The event concluded with a live orchestra.

Setting the Stage for a Better Tomorrow

The essence of education explained

Graced by Guest-of-Honour, Mr S Chandra Das, Vice-Chairman of MDIS Senate, it was nothing short of inspiring. In his speech, he reminded the graduands on the essence of education.

He said, “Education is the engine of any economy. Education helps us develop our perspective on the world at large, and encourages us to be analytical and creative on different subjects.” Mr Das also urged graduands to embrace lifelong learning, and constantly acquire knowledge and skills.

Dr. Eric Kuan, President of MDIS, in his speech encouraged the cohorts to fuse knowledge and wisdom acquired with daily lives. “Both knowledge and wisdom must go together, for one without the other is ineffective. Knowledge is just having clarity of facts and truths, while wisdom is the ability to make consistently good decisions in both business and personal life.”

Ishak Khan, who graduated from University of the West of England, too delivered a speech on behalf of his cohort. He had this to say of his days in MDIS: “My studies at MDIS had been nothing less than fulfilling. I have met many wonderful people, who guided me on my path to become a successful practitioner in the digital media industry today.

“Special thanks to all my classmates for their friendships, and showing me the spirit of perseverance through late night group projects, filming, and the debugging of our game codes. I would also like to thank our lecturers for their generosity of knowledge. All these have made my days at MDIS very special.”

85 graduands with over 200 family members and close friends gathered at the Auditorium at MDIS Campus to celebrate the graduation of University of the West of England and MDIS’ Pre-degree cohorts.

He graduated after two years with MDIS and University of West of England. Ishak Khan shares with Horizons what it’s like from the beginning, and paying it forward today as a lecturer.

Horizons: What made you pursue a degree in Digital Media?

Ishak Khan (IK): After I graduated with a diploma in Animation and Visual Effects from polytechnic, I wanted to find a programme that could complement my studies and acquired skills set.

Observing the rapid changes in the world of IT and Digital Media, it is important to be familiar in a wide spectrum within the field. MDIS was offering this course which addressed my requirements. I met the head of school and left convinced this course was right for me.

Horizons: Name three biggest takeaways from these two years of studies.

IK: The first would be the networks that I have established during my time with MDIS. The lecturers are from the industry and they bring with them wealth of experience.

The second would be the enlightening experience of managing my time; juggling work and studies. It allowed me to grow as a professional as I learn to prioritise my work more effectively. All these are traits which I still practice in my work today.

The last would be the friends that I have made, we still keep in touch and continue to work together outside of school.

Horizons: How does it feel now to be “paying it forward” through sharing knowledge with students in MDIS pursuing the same?

IK: It feels wonderful! It is a new experience for me and I hope to be an inspiration just like how my lecturers were to me. I find the roles are reversed as this time round; being the one dishing out advice and confidence to students. They are like me back then; unsure on what we could do in this industry.

Horizons: What is your advice for your students who aspire to be like you?

IK: Continue learning new skills related to IT. I always feel that we should master one skill and learn another four that would complement our niches. Be it learning from a friend or pursuing a higher education, the crux is to have the perseverance and enthusiasm to acquire the skill no matter how hard it can be.

Never tell yourself it is too difficult to learn. Regardless of age, everyone can learn, some faster, some slower, but everyone can learn.

Horizons: Any last messages?

IK: My last piece of advice would be to set simple goals. I always tell myself, where I am going to be, or what am I going to accomplish one year from now. Then I would focus my time and energy to making that goal come true.

I also encourage people to network more, learn from others, and be humble.

Two Roles

This year, it announced that it was setting up its third overseas campus in Chennai, India, in a joint venture with Vels Institute of Science, Technology and Advanced Studies. MDIS, which bagged its first Enterprise 50 Award on Thursday, has come a long way. Founded in 1956, it is Singapore’s oldest not-for-profit professional institute for lifelong learning. Its courses – about 60 per cent of its programmes are Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes – are offered in collaboration with several universities from Australia, France, the United Kingdom and the United States.

A TURN IN FORTUNESIt has been more than 25 years, but Dr. R Theyvendran, who continues to be the force behind the institute, is still often asked about how he turned the fortunes of MDIS around. Not that he tires of telling it. It is after all an impressive story – when Dr. Theyvendran first institution was losing about S$60,000 a year.

Within three years, however, he was able to not only bring it back to the black, but turn in a surplus of over S$1 million. Today, the institute has a tidy

nest egg which it sits on, ready to take on its next project. Indeed, the institute has been able to meet all its financial obligations and engage in overseas investment projects and acquisition deals without incurring any debt, a fact it is very proud of.

“Our model is very unique compared to other private education (PE) institutions. We are not profit-making. ..Board members are not paid salaries and they don’t get dividends or anything. Everything is reinvested for infrastructure, curriculum development and expansion plans.”

It is, Dr. Theyvendran believes, these values which make MDIS tick. Students are themselves made to sit through compulsory three-hour courses which stress the importance of family values and ethics.

In fact, the MDIS campus at Stirling Road is peppered with statues at every turn – the 10 sages of the world (which include Albert Einstein, Samuel Johnson, Aristotle and Maria Montessori) flank the entrance to the campus while elsewhere there is a family group and further inside the campus, a student in graduation robes holding up a globe. “The statues are a constant reminder to students of what they’ve learnt,” says Dr. Theyvendran

It is not just about imparting values to students, it is about pushing them beyond academic success. In fact, this same spirit of constant innovation and improvement pervades MDIS’s corporate culture. Earlier this year, MDIS Corporation, a subsidiary of MDIS, acquired Service Quality Centre (SQC) – which was established in 1990 by Singapore Airlines and Spring Singapore as part of the government’s efforts to raise service standards in Singapore – for S$5 million.

SQC provides service excellence, quality and productivity-related training solutions, and counts financial institutions, supermarket chains as well as government ministries and agencies among its clients. The acquisition diversifies MDIS’s offerings in training solutions. The school has set aside S$1.2 million to renovate its Dhoby Ghaut campus to house

STANDING at the cusp of its 60th year, the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) is far from slowing down. Indeed, in recent years the institute has been making aggressive moves overseas. It opened its first overseas campus in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, in 2008, and its second in Johor, Malaysia. It broke ground for its Malaysian campus – estimated to be almost five times the size of its Singapore campus – in 2013.

SQC as well as its existing corporate training arm, the Management Development and Consultancy (MDC), under one roof.

“We are constantly striving to improve our processes . . . I tell the departments that every year I want to see a process change or process improvement. It’s compulsory if they want to get better rewards,” says Dr. Theyvendran. “Force them to think!

LOOKING AHEAD“Now when they tell me they did this and this (improvements over the year) I won’t accept because I’ll say that’s not what we want. You don’t have to tell me what you did, I want you to look at how you can think ahead and what you are doing by way of proactiveness. Simple things will make me happy.”

Next year, MDIS is looking to launch its 60th anniversary book, The MDIS Story, which captures the trials and tribulations of the institute and puts the spotlight on the movers and shakers who have contributed towards the institute’s growth and development. It will also draw on the fundamental core values that motivated the institute to succeed, and what it stands for today as a social enterprise and a key player in private education in Singapore.

Dr. Theyvendran is also hoping to not only boost the awards the institution has collected over the years, but also build a suitable space to showcase them. “Not only local awards, let’s go for international awards,” he says, turning to his staff.

“We’ve got about 11 awards; we should carve something and put them outside so when people come in they can see we’re real solid.” He returns to the interview, a determined glint in his eye: “We are clear of where we’re going and where we’re driven. We don’t want to collapse.”

Where Meets Modernity12 countries, 1 capital, a big fashion extravaganza

From 4th – 7th November 2015, designers from 12 countries took the opportunity to showcase their latest creations in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. Global top buyers, media, retailers, celebrities and VIPS were treated to a fashion extravaganza from China, Korea, Japan, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Vietnam.

The Mercedes Benz STYLO Asia Fashion Week, is the inaugural collaboration between top emerging designers in one media event. Our very own Yuna Yun, with her tasteful fusion of the best of Korea and Singapore was listed as one of the favourites by many bloggers.

Yuna shares with Horizons her journey to this exposition; fusing Korea and contemporary fashion world, with a dash of art.

Horizons: How long did you take to complete the creations which won the recent Industry Choice Award for Fashion Design?

Yuna: It took more than half a year. From developing the concept, exploring the ideas, techniques, and designs, to watching the 3D outfits I dreamt all this time come to life.

Horizons: From where do you get your inspiration to incorporate into your pieces?

Yuna: Every creation carries a motif of my life; “pursue what you want with your true heart”. That became a mission for me – expressing my passion through my design identities.

Being born and bred in Korea, and studying in cosmopolitan Singapore, I felt urged to merge Korean cultural heritage with contemporary design influences.

Horizons: How do you strike a balance between being “wearable” and “creativity”?

Yuna: The world has witnessed many changes in the field of fashion in the last century. Fast fashion now provides the marketplace with affordable apparel. People wear new clothes a few times and throw them away very easily.

I want to engage people and understand what kind of meaning they give to their clothes. This also leads to my design philosophy; sustainability, timeless chic and independent style. In conclusion, I want to promote the principle: the more you wear certain clothes, the more valuable they become to you.

Horizons: What is your next step after MDIS?

Yuna: Right after my graduation I started working in Bodynits, where I can explore innovative technologies and functions. I am also collaborating with Gnossem to sell my final year collection at their store in Scotts Square mall.

As we speak, I am in the middle of the creation of my next collection in collaboration with Asia Fashion Management, who invited me to join the Mercedes Benz Stylo Asia Fashion Week in Malaysia last month. It’s satisfying to inspire others with my creations. I am grateful to all people who believe in my talent, their faith in me keeps me going.

With her at the visit were Ms Tan Lee Jee, CCC Chairman of Ayer Rajah Division, Ms Margaret Lok, Chairman of Faber Hills Neighbourhood Committee, and three top management staff of Wealth Management Institute.

The group was shown MDIS operations and campus facilities. They were particularly intrigued with the values inculcated in MDIS students in the course of their studies. Ms Foo completed the visit in praise of MDIS’ commitment to students’ learning within and outside the classroom.

Professor Harmon opened the session with her observations about media in the 21st century, while Mr Sadasivan offered his take on the Singapore scene. Being the founder of socio-political site, Inconvenient Questions (IQ), he chronicled his experiences in the media world since 1983, where he joined broadcasting.

Three decades on, with a New York Award under his belt for a documentary produced, Sadasivan concluded: “Today’s marketplace values something last years’ did not - passion.” He added academic qualifications are inaccurate measurements of one’s intelligence.

Being in the media industry also awakened his sense of social responsibility. He shared, “IQ was started in 2011, and self-funded. I felt the most important thing in Singapore was to build a civil society. With an initial capital of $100,000, another $540,000 was raised, leading to the launch of IQ. It was also the first online platform to have a debate between political parties. Even though I earn nothing from it, I wanted to do it due to a sense of purpose. It was the need to contribute to Singapore civil society by enhancing their voice.”

Sneak preview with Oklahoma City University and industry veteran

Media in the 21st Century

On 9th October 2015, MDIS co-hosted the annual Oklahoma City University (OCU) Career Seminar attended by Media students, alumni and staff. Guests-of-Honour, Professor Karlie Harmon from OCU and Singapore’s media veteran, Mr Viswa Sadasivan, presented the developments in the media industry.

The curious audience posed questions to both speakers with one for Sadasivan about the art of journalism. Anthony asked, “What makes a good journalist? Someone truthful, or ethical?”

Sadasivan replied, “A good journalist remains open-minded and neutral. He presents a spectrum of perspectives for the audience to decide. The information presented must also be valid and objective.”

Don’t be afraid of challenges, take pride in being a journalist and a professional. They have been some rewarding steps in my life. ” - Professor Karlie Harmon Oklahoma City University

This article is contributed by Amanda Lee Keng Yuen and Anushka who is undertaking MDIS’ Diploma in Mass Communications.

MDIS: What is the one aspect that can change the media industry for the good?

Viswa Sadasivan (VS): I think the media industry can afford to have a lot more ethics-based decisions. It is increasingly driven by money, and money can blind. It can make you do things that you should not do as a journalist under the Code of Ethics. I feel you need to get back to your basics; ethics-based decisions.

Prof Harmon (PH): That’s going back to fundamentals; we can’t get away from those.

MDIS: What are the three most important things we need to know before joining the media industry?

PH: It’s the passion, and the clarity. Don’t be afraid of challenges, take pride in being a journalist and a professional. They have been some rewarding steps in my life.

VS: Forget 9 to 5, and becoming a billionaire. Be prepared to struggle with everything, and especially with your own heart and soul. If you really want to take it seriously, everything you do needs to be a struggle, a contest.

MDIS: What is that one thing that recruiters look for in a Media Graduate?

PH: Passion is one of the things that they do look for. They also look for a sense of work ethics, and direction, while skills can be trained.

VS: The candidate has to be purpose-driven. Without that, mere skills are insufficient to compensate for the lack.

MDIS: These days we see a lot of companies focusing on the academics and report card.

VS: It has changed, but these qualifying factors are applicable in any industry.

PH: I don’t think that’s true. There will be many people with the same credentials. However, what will set them apart is the passion, work ethics, clarity of purpose, and personal qualities.

MDIS: So if you have those qualities, you are sure to succeed?

VS: You have a much better chance of succeeding. However, you also need a little bit of luck to make it happen.

A good journalist remains open-minded and neutral. He presents a spectrum of perspectives for the audience to decide.” - Viswa Sadasivan Inconvenient Questions Singapore

On 2nd October 2015, 22 high school students and their Biology teacher, Mr Selvaraaj attended an interactive workshop hosted by MDIS School of Health and Life Sciences. The group from NPS International School was shown what it’s like to be a Microbial Detective.

Led by Dr. Himani Swami, Head of School of Health and Life Sciences, they were presented the scientific method of identifying the microbial culprits responsible for causing various diseases including food poisoning, necrotizing fasciitis, and meningitis based on laboratory test results and the symptoms demonstrated by individual patients.

Being science students, the participants were intrigued at the simplicity of various laboratory tests capable of pinpointing the cause of different diseases. Mr Selvaraaj, notes, “It was really an enriching experience for all of us. Dr Himani Swami’s robust enthusiasm and generosity of knowledge has certainly planted a seed of interest in our students for possible pursuit of studies in Biomedical Sciences and Biotechnology.”

Immortalising Moments

With countless varieties of mooncakes sold in the market, nothing beats tucking into mooncakes made by yourself! In conjunction with Mid-Autumn festival, Membership held a mooncake making session for students on 12th September 2015, but this time it was Snowskin or Ice Skin instead of the traditionally baked dessert.

Snowskin mooncake is a non-baked mooncake which is commonly eaten cold and fresh. It has an elastic, chewy and soft skin.

Over 24 students attended the fun workshop – main challenge was to get the texture of the snowskin perfect. Kelly, who is pursuing a Diploma in Fashion and Marketing walked away happy. “I had so much fun and look forward to similar workshops organised for students,” she said.

A moment is frozen in time through lens. On 8th August 2015 and 26th September 2015, 40 students took part in an MDIS Photography Club outing where they stopped by locations with scenic views worthy of being immortalised.

From the National Day Parade to the Mooncake Festival, students learnt how to capture various scenic views through various techniques such as night, street and event photography. Above all, the students were also introduced to the craft of anticipation, for the picture-perfect moment.

The event aims to connect global alumni members to potential employers through the digital platform, leading to career opportunities. A total of 28 enterprises and 900 participants from different faculties participated in the fair.

Participants received insights from enterprises on a wide range of topics surrounding career search; from employment trends and job hunting tips to managing interviews. Facilitated by industry experts, job seekers

were also exposed to how effective communication can work for them, and how colours can affect one’s mood through the Colour Profiling Personality assessment.

A preview of the common challenges in job hunting was also offered. Facilitated by MDIS’ Heads of Schools, participants received

tips on how they can extend their skillsets in fields indirectly connected to their majors. They were also briefed on resume writing, with the aim of positioning themselves in the best possible light.

From 5th – 9th October 2015, MDIS Career Assistance Unit (CAU) hosted its inaugural virtual recruitment event on campus with the message on “job search across boundaries”.
