HALF-WAY MARK REFLECTIONS

It may not seem possible that the year’s already half gone, but that’s probably because it’s been jam-

packed for all of us. The halfway mark is the perfect time to look back and look ahead.

Looking Back:Our four linked events in late March – the Innovative Dealer Summit, Denver Auto Show and Charity

Preview Party – were outstanding successes.

• The Green Car ParadeRQ$SULODWWKH6WDWH&DSLWROLQFOXGHGGR]HQVRIIXHOHI¿FLHQWDQG alternative-fuels vehicles. It’s a tradition that opens the week prior to the Denver Auto Show. Our

annual Green Car Convoy made its way through several Colorado communities earlier in March to

pique interest in the auto show.

• The Innovative Dealer Summit (IDS) continued to grow in its 5th year as a nationally recognized

digital conference for automobile dealers. Participating were 262 dealers, senior manager and

marketing staff from all over the state. They were treated to outstanding educational opportunities

with the added advantage of being close to home, affordable and part of the Denver Auto Show.

• The Charity Preview PartyDOVRJUHZVLJQL¿FDQWO\LQZLWKPHDQLQJIXOLQFUHDVHVLQDWWHQGDQFHVSRQVRUVKLSDQGJURVVUHYHQXHDQGDPRXQWVGRQDWHGWRRXUFKDULWLHV$WWHQGDQFHURVHIURPLQWRLQ±MXVW¿YH\HDUVDJRZHVWDUWHGZLWKDW-tendees – that’s quite a jump! Attendees wined, dined, danced and had private access to the Denver Auto Show. Most important, we were

Colorado automobile dealers are steering consumers away from

alternative-fuels vehicles. It doesn’t seem reasonable, since dealers

have made large investments in infrastructure to sell and service

these innovative technologies as well as education for our person-

nel that we can recoup only by selling the vehicles themselves.

On-the-job drug and alcohol use costs U.S. employers billions of dollars every year—not only in absenteeism, but in workplace accidents, lawsuits, and low productivity on the part of employees whose drug use goes undetected.

This program is designed to arm managers with the know-how to detect drug use in the workplace. There will be an in-depth look at the signs and symptoms of the five major drugs typically tested for in the workplace. In addition, legal status of marijuana in Colorado, drug testing methodologies and how to engage with an employee suspected of on-the-job drug use will be covered.

Benefits for You• Reduce or eliminate on-the-job drug use• Avoid liability from poorly executed drug testing• Know your rights on all of the laws affecting employee drug use:

ADA, FMLA, unemployment, and more

Learning Objectives• Learn when drug testing is appropriate as well as current

and emerging technologies• Learn to detect the signs and symptoms of drug use• Know what you can and can’t do about marijuana• Learn how to engage with a potentially drug-impaired employee

Curtis Graves is an employment law attorney for Mountain States Employers Council, headquartered here in Denver. MSEC provides advice, counsel, information, represen-tation, training, and education in all aspects of the employment relationship.
