Dear Traveler,In honor of the upcoming 125th anniversary of National Geographic, we’ve planned a special Canadian Maritimes expedition: a circumnavigation of Newfoundland and the islands of Cape Breton, St. Pierre (France) and Îles de la Madeleine aboard National Geographic Explorer.

In addition to an all-star expedition team to deepen our understanding and appreciation for the region, we’ll share the adventure with remarkable traveling companions. Gil Grosvenor, National Geographic Emeritus Chairman of the Board, is our host as his family generously invites us to their historic estate, the former home of Gil’s great-grandfather, Alexander Graham Bell. And he’ll give us an insider perspective on these waters, which he knows intimately. As he says, many of his first memories are of being strapped to the deck of his grandfather’s yawl, the Elsie, during sailing outings on the Bras d’Or Lake. His two sons endured the same fate aboard White Mist. National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis is especially delighted to be sharing the adventure with us, as he emailed me: “I’ve been asked to serve as the Honorary Chair of the Gros Morne citizens group, those who work closely with and advise the national park. So this expedition would be ideal. I know quite a bit about the history of that part of Canada.” On a side note, Wade’s book, Into the Silence: The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest,

has won the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction, the UK’s top award—and there is a major Newfoundland connection in the book which I’m sure he’ll enjoy talking about on the voyage.

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate 125 years of National Geographic than by exploring this historic geography in the company of people who have been integral to the impact it’s had on the world and our understanding of it. I am delighted to be aboard myself, and look forward to sharing the adventure with you.

P.S. Join us to explore the world in this very special year, the 125th Anniversary of National Geographic, and receive this limited edition commemorative book as our “Thank You.”

Built in 1893, Beinn Bhreagh hall, near Baddeck, Cape Breton Island, belonged to the family of Alexander Graham Bell and now the Grosvenor family. Inset: Alexander Graham Bell at Beinn Bhreagh hall with grandson Melville Bell Grosvenor (Gil Grosvenor’s father.)

Best regards,

Sven-Olof Lindblad

sep. 7: u.s./sT. John’s, neWfounDlanD, canaDa/embarKArrive in St. John’s, the picturesque capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador, set on a natural harbor at the most easterly point of North America. Visit the colorful waterfront and see Cape Spear lighthouse and historic Signal Hill. Settle into our ship as we head through the harbor narrows. (D)

sep. 8: explorinG easTern neWfounDlanDThe eastern coast of Newfoundland is wild and rugged, and often accessible only by sea. Discover tiny fishing villages tucked into coves and inlets along these stunning shores. Go hiking or hop into a Zodiac or a kayak. Back on board, gain insights from our experts into the civilizations and wildlife that have made this island home. (B,L,D)

sep. 9: l’anse aux meaDoWsIn 1960, the remains of a Viking village established in the 11th century were discovered at L’Anse aux Meadows, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walk among the Norse ruins and reconstructed sod huts and learn the saga of the Vikings in North America—nearly 500 years before Columbus arrived. (B,L,D)

sep. 10: Gros morne naTional parKGraced by cliffs, fjords, and a sweeping alpine plateau, Gros Morne National Park has been designated a World Heritage site for its spectacular geology. Take a walk with

our geologist to learn about the forces that shaped this land and the ancient serpentine rock that illustrates the phenomenon of plate tectonics. Continue to Western Brook Pond, a pristine, glacier-carved fjord. (B,L,D)

sep. 11: Îles De la maDeleine, QuebecA cluster of wispy islands isolated in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Îles de la Madeleine are home to miles of dunes, grassy hills, and dazzling red sandstone cliffs. The caves, sea arches, and rocky nooks are perfect for exploring by Zodiac and kayak. Visit La Grave, site of the islands’ first settlement, and learn about Acadian culture; or set off on a hike or a bicycle ride. Weather permit-ting, enjoy a lobster bake on the beach with local musicians. (B,L,D)

sep. 12: baDDecK, cape breTon islanD, noVa scoTiaIn the morning, set sail aboard the schooner Amoeba on Bras d’Or Lake, and listen to lively local lore as you take in the green foliage along the shore. On Cape Breton Island, dock in the village of Baddeck, where Alexander Graham Bell, National Geographic’s second president, built his summer home and conducted much of his research. In celebration of the Society’s 125th anniversary, enjoy a special invitation to a private lunch with Bell’s great-grandson, Gil Grosvenor, on the grounds of the Bell/Grosvenor family home at Beinn Bhreagh. (B,L,D)

sep. 13: sainT pierre anD miQuelonAs we make our way north, go ashore at Saint Pierre Island, France’s oldest remain-ing overseas territory. As a young reporter, Gil Grosvenor first traveled here in 1967 on assignment for National Geographic. Enjoy free time to explore the wharf and soak up the French culture before continuing to the island of Miquelon. (B,L,D)
