College students will be headed off for a new year or for their first year away from home. It also means that summer vacations are winding down and our sched- ules begin to return to the school year routine. At Wesley, not much slows down during the summer, in fact our Sundays have the addition of an evening service and meal at our re- treat center. Next Sunday we will have our final Sunday evening wor- ship and meal at Wesley Gardens. We hope if you havent been out this summer to enjoy an evening in worship and fellowship on Moon River, that you will get out there tonight or next week. At the beginning of the school year, we always have a renewed em- phasis on Sunday school here at Wesley. Next Sunday is Promotion Sundaywhen our children move up to their next age-appropriate class. While most of us adults think we are done with schooland that Sunday school is for children and youth, at Wesley adult Sunday school is a big part of our ministry of Christian education, fellowship, support, and relationship building. Next week during the Sunday school hour (9:45 a.m.-10:45 a.m.), we will have a breakfast for everyone and a gathering of all the Adult Sunday school classes in the Fellowship Hall. During that time, each class will share a few minutes about their class and if you are new to Wesley, or have never participated in a Sunday school class, you will get the chance to see what is available and meet people from the different classes. (Children and youth Sunday school classes will meet during this time.) For our children, we will also have our annual blessing of the back- packs,so we encourage our children to bring their backpacks to wor- ship for the childrens sermon and a blessing on their new year. Our Prayer Committee has prepared a tag for their backpack reminding them they are prayed for by our church family. Check out the insert in the bulletin about Sunday school and find a place to plug in. We are also still looking for teachers. If you love kids and love God and want to help connect the two, let us know.

Celebrating 150 Years 1868 - 2018

Back to (Sunday) School

While most have already started, by the time this week is over pret-ty much all of our students will be back in school. College students will be headed off for a new year or for their first year away from home. It also means that summer vacations are winding down and our sched-ules begin to return to the school year routine. At Wesley, not much slows down during the summer, in fact our Sundays have the addition of an evening service and meal at our re-treat center. Next Sunday we will have our final Sunday evening wor-ship and meal at Wesley Gardens. We hope if you haven’t been out this summer to enjoy an evening in worship and fellowship on Moon River, that you will get out there tonight or next week. At the beginning of the school year, we always have a renewed em-phasis on Sunday school here at Wesley. Next Sunday is “Promotion Sunday” when our children move up to their next age-appropriate class. While most of us adults think we are done with “school” and that Sunday school is for children and youth, at Wesley adult Sunday school is a big part of our ministry of Christian education, fellowship, support, and relationship building. (Children and youth Sunday school classes will meet during this time.) For our children, we will also have our annual “blessing of the back-packs,” so we encourage our children to bring their backpacks to wor-ship for the children’s sermon and a blessing on their new year. Our Prayer Committee has prepared a tag for their backpack reminding them they are prayed for by our church family. Check out the insert in the bulletin about Sunday school and find a place to plug in. We are also still looking for teachers. If you love kids and love God and want to help connect the two, let us know.

A Piece of History Today’s choral anthem, The Lord’s Prayer, was presented as a gift to the choir in 1944 by Mr. and Mrs. J. E. O’Neal in memory of their son, Lieuten-ant Jack O’Neal, Jr. who was killed in action in WWII. There are fourteen original copies. Hand-inscribed on each are Jack’s birth and death dates as well as the words “Jack’s favorite.” Mr. and Mrs. O’Neal also gave the baptismal font in our Sanctuary. Take time after the Service today to notice the inscriptions on the font. Jack was born in Savannah in 1922. He was president of his graduating class at Savannah High School in 1939, president of the Savannah sub-district Methodist Youth Fellowship, and a member of Wesley Monu-mental Methodist Church. He went on to attend Georgia Tech where he was vice president of his class. While serving as flight navigator of the Flying Fortress “Flak Rat” over Germany on April 13, 1944, Jack and his crew of nine were hit by an anti-aircraft barrage. Some of them were able to parachute before the plane exploded. According to two of his colleagues, John bailed the plane in time but his chute failed to open. He was awarded an Air Medal and Purple Heart.

Usher Roses The roses worn by the ushers today are given in loving memory of Bob Farrow by his children and grandchildren. Just Born Congratulations to Rachel and Jarrett Rabe on the birth of a daughter, Anne Katherine Rabe, on August 1, 2019. A rose is by the altar today in honor of Annie. Congratulations Wesley Monumental congratulates Aida Hajjaji and Whit Watts on their marriage, which took place August 3, 2019. Monumental Messenger Deadline The deadline to submit items for the September Messenger is tomorrow, Monday, August 12. Please email [email protected]. Promotion Sunday—August 18th Next Sunday, the congregation is invited to a breakfast buffet in the Fellowship Hall at 9:15 a.m., and all children and youth will be “promoted” to their new grade for: Sunday School, Children’s Worship, and Youth Fellowship!
