PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS

— CLOUDS GIVE WAY TO THE SUN —This message is nothing l ike I

anticipated writing a few weeks ago. We were nearing Spring. Sunny days ahead. I was looking at the various projects in getting my Boxster ready for a very fun season. I was looking forward to my instructor candidate training and writing about the training in my column.

We had our New Membership Social on March 7th at Denver Auto Shield. www.DenverAutoShield.com. It was a very fun event. I enjoyed so much seeing my Porsche friends. Jeff and his team at DAS put on a great event as always.

However, there was something a little different. Instead of shaking hands, people were doing elbow bumps. There was talk about this thing called “coronavirus.” At the time of the event, I didn’t think much about it. Just another diversion like the common cold. Is there that much to worry about? Of course not!

Over the next several days, there was a lot more in the news about “COVID-19” which stands for coronavirus disease of 2019. It started becoming more of a concern.

RMR is one of the largest regions

within PCA. Last year, Rich Sanders, our Zone 9 Rep, help form a discussion group of the large PCA region presidents. This group allowed the presidents to talk about issues that predominately affect large regions. A group email was created to facilitate discussion.

Beginning March 11th, this group email started lighting up like a christmas tree. The president of the Pacific North-west Region confirmed that Washington State had 167 COVID-19 cases and 23 deaths. The virus was spreading fast.

We in Colorado were behind the other regions. However, the information we were getting from the other presidents alerted us that the RMR Board had to take action fast. The first action was to cancel the Breakfast Club on March 14th.

We received more information that the Centers for Disease Control were making strong recommendations for “social dis-tancing.” The Governors of Washington State, New York and Massachusetts were closing restaurants and other businesses. We made the decision to cancel all our events through April, then through May.

Governor Polis followed quickly. His actions were similar to the actions in oth-

er states. Since we were given advance information from other region presidents, we were able to stay ahead of the curve.

As I am writing this message, Colorado restaurants are closed and “gatherings” of ten or more persons are prohibited. Col-orado has had 274 cases of COVID-19 with 4 deaths. I have temporarily closed my office and my staff is working re-motely. For the short term, life appears rather bleak.

However, Shakespeare wrote King Lear and Sir Isaac Newton wrote his theories of physics under similar circum-stances. These days will pass. Goodness will prevail.

The Board is reviewing the RMR cal-endar on a rolling basis. They will de-cide whether further events need to be cancelled as the dates draw near. Follow our eblasts for further information.

While the skies are cloudy now, clouds always give way to the sun. There are good days that lie ahead. We will over-come.

STAY HEALTHY OUT THERE!As I write this article, my thoughts are all related to

COVID-19 and all the closures happening everywhere. This is a crazy time. I am saddened by this pandemic and in regards to the club, I’m saddened we can’t hold our events as I miss my PCA friends and family. I hope everyone is doing their part to do the right thing and stay home as much as possible to prevent the spread of this virus. We, the Board of RMR, will continue to monitor the situation and look forward to when we can get back to holding our events again. In time, this too, shall pass.

As we are now in Spring, the snow accumulates on my front lawn as I write this. Where is the sun? Why aren’t there rain showers instead to bring May flowers? Oh yeah, this is Colorado! It could snow any time of the year! Well maybe not so much in the Denver area, but in the mountains for sure! Have you ever heard of the Never Summer Mountain Range? It has that name for a reason. Snow is there year-round. It’s best to always be prepared! In the meantime, I am looking forward to warmer weather and attending events soon! I’m not loosing hope

While we are practicing social distancing, remember, you can always drive your Porsche to run to the grocery store! Just remember instead of 6 feet for spacing, it is actually one car length for every 10 mph! I try to find the bright side. I feel you can cure a little cabin fever with a drive in your Porsche; even if it is to get food! Our cars love to be driven and hopefully you love to drive them! Just bring some sanitizer if you need to get fuel. Happy driving and be safe!

Stay healthy RMR!

Prost!

TRACK TALK

Dan H. CarlsonLeader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee

Amelia Island is northeast of Jacksonville, FL and the Con-cours happenings are scattered throughout the area. The ocean-front Ritz-Carlton and the adjoining Golf Club of Amelia Island serve as the perfect base for this diverse gathering of both clas-sic and sport/race cars. It’s one of the most prestigious events in the country…in the world, and I ran into people from around the globe.

This year’s honoree was none other than the man referred to as “The Captain” or “RP” by his friends – Roger Penske. With that, 30 Penske race cars were displayed, some of which “The Captain” himself had raced. He is the reason this article is fall-ing in the Track Talk column. More on this later.

I’ve been to the last two Amelia Island Concours d’Ele-gance…I should say “kinda” been there. The actual Concours d’Elegance is on Sunday - I’ve never been. Gooding & Com-pany, Bonham’s, Russo and Steele, and RM Sotheby’s host big auctions Friday through Sunday – I’ve never been.

Here’s the rest of the story.I did attend MY “big three” – Friday’s PCA Werks Reunion

Amelia Island, Saturday’s Cars and Coffee at the Concours, and Friday and Saturday’s sold-out panel discussions honoring Rog-er – Penske Perfect: Effort = Results, and Team Penske - The Early Years.

Let’s take these one at a time. This was the 4th Annual Porsche Club of America Werks Re-

union, with over 700 registered Porsches on display on a neigh-boring golf course. The event was free and music, vendors, and food were plentiful. PCA had a tent, and so did Porsche North America. Famous racer and 2019 Amelia Honoree Jacky Ickx was being interviewed by PCA President Tom Gorsuch when I walked by the stage. Aspen’s John Oates of Hall & Oates fame was back again, this time showing his 1984 911 Carrera. All of the Porsche “numbers and letters” were there from 356s and 914s to a number of “mint” GT2 and GT3 RSs. The incredible new GT4 was featured and dressed in “speed yellow.”

Cars and Coffee was next on my program. Cars were orga-nized by manufacturer on the golf hole next to the Ritz. There were Porsches of all types, Corvettes (they were showcasing their new C-8 race car), McLarens and their new race car, Mer-cedes, plus Camaros, GTOs, and Firebirds of all vintages.

The Werks Reunion and Cars and Coffee were terrific, but the main attraction that brought me back were the panel discussion

seminars.

Last year’s seminars were absolutely tremendous. “The Porsche 962 Dynasty” was hosted by Justin Bell and featured panelists Derek Bell, Rob Dyson, Hurley Haywood, Jacky Ickx, Jochen Mass, Mark Raffauf and Alwin Springer. Six of the most historic 962s were positioned in front of the panel. Ray Evernham hosted the other event – “Racing around the Rules: The Unfair Advantage.” The rule books were much thinner then, and a diverse panel of racing lore crew chiefs – Andy Pe-tree, Kevin Jeannette, Jim Busby, Mark Raffauf, Steve Roby, and Jay Signore candidly discussed “bending” the rule book to their advantage, i.e., just short of cheating.

This year’s panel discussions were no different, and once again a standing room only crowd of over 700 people packed the Ritz-Carlton ballroom. TV race commentator and former Jeff Gordon Crew Chief Ray Evernham was the Master of Cer-emonies for both. One panel included George Follmer, 4-time Indy 500 winner Rick “The Rocket Man” Mears, John Mecom and Rusty Wallace, with driver Jim Hall on the phone; the other was made up of some of the men and women who have made Penske Racing successful from the beginning - Chuck Cant-well, Don Cox, Walt Czarnecki, Karl Kainhofer, Jay Signore, Judy Stropus, and Woody Woodard. Roger Penske provided closing comments each day.

It was all about “The Captain.” In 1966, “RP” founded Roger Penske Racing, which later be-

came Team Penske – arguably the most successful racing team

TRACK TALK

in history. In the beginning, his small Reading, PA race shop was building cars for three separate racing series, including the preparation of identical cars for the International Race of Cham-pions (IROC). Why was he selected to build these cars? Be-cause he was trusted by everyone. Their one phone was mount-ed on the wall…a pay phone, and the bathroom was “outside.” Think about what became of this - 17 Indy 500 wins (with an in-credible 37% win ratio), championships in NASCAR and Trans Am and the domination of the Can-Am series (six victories in eight races during their 1973 championship run).

There was a lot of conversation surrounding Roger’s favorite, Mark Donohue, at the wheel of what Donohue called the perfect race car, the Porsche 917/30. Light and fast, its 5.4-liter flat-12 engine generated up to 1500 horsepower – it’s still considered the most powerful racing sports car ever built, and that was 50 years ago. It set a closed-course speed record of 221.16 mph at Talladega in 1975, and they talked of it traveling down the Mul-sanne Straight at Le Mans at 250+ MPH. 250+ MPH!!! “Bul-let” trains in Europe don’t even do that!

When it was Roger’s turn to speak, he was incredibly inspi-rational. His mind-set and energy were that of a person half his age. I took many notes and learned so much about and from the man whose suc-cessful career in rac-ing is still the anchor of his 66,000 employ-ee worldwide-corpo-rate empire. He talked like a race car driver, a team owner, and a CEO. It was a lesson in leadership – prepa-ration, anticipation, execution, expect-ing nothing but per-fection, do the right thing, teammates (em-

ployees) first, make a deci-sion and then get out of the way of your talented team, and lead by example, to name a few.

Think about what he’s accomplished – more than 500 major race wins and 34 championships as driver, then team owner in open-wheel, stock car, and sports car racing competition. He re-cently purchased the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is the CEO of a huge enterprise, and to top it all off, he’s been awarded The Medal of Honor.

You may recall that when Porsche factory driver Patrick Long visited with our club a couple of years ago, he drove the RS Spyder for Roger and used the term “Penske-like” when talking about perfection.

Leadership means everything to your CDI team, and “The Captain’s” words struck a chord with me.

So now you know what drew me back to Amelia Island – it was “RP.” And now you know the rest of the story.

PAST EVENT : EISKHANA 2020

As I finished my recent article on Eiskhana 2020 (in the March 2020 edition of HighGear), I realized I may have left you, the reader, with more questions than answers. Wait, you mean there is an Audi Club? Why is Rocky Mountain Region – Porsche Club of America (RMR-PCA or RMR) mentoring the local Audi Club group? How did this come about? And the list goes on. I decided these questions needed to be an-swered, so a meeting with RMR President Jim Thorburn and Audi Club North America – Rocky Mountain Chapter (AC-NA-RMC) President Scott Pedram (also a fellow RMR-PCA member) was arranged. We met one chilly January morning at The Perfect Landing Restaurant so I could get to the bottom of this.

First off, “Yes, there is an Audi Club.”, and here is a little background. According to their website, www.audiclubna.org, they are much newer on the car club scene than PCA (1985 compared to PCA’s 1955 origins). They have 9,500+ members in the US and Canada. The ACNA is very similar to PCA in the perks they offer to their members, and they even have a members-only car raffle just like PCA. ACNA chapters also hold the same type of events as PCA: autocross, HPDEs, and tours to name a few.

So, okay, that’s nice to know, but it doesn’t really get to the heart of the matter. How did RMR-PCA (RMR) come to mentor ACNA-RMC (RMC) and why? It all started last year at RMR’s New Membership Social. Jim was talking about RMR’s growth from 527 members in 2008 to nearly 3,000 in 2019. This recent growth of RMR impressed Scott. The RMC covers the entire area from New Mexico to Montana. Even though the region is much larger than RMR, there are only around 350 RMC members. With as many Audis as there are driving the highways of the area (an area Scott calls the Quattro Region due to the terrain and abundant winter snow-fall), the membership numbers should be much higher. Scott wanted to know how RMR was able to grow and become the thriving organization that it is today. In hopes of seeing the membership numbers of RMC increase in a similar manner as RMR, Scott reached out to Jim and requested a meeting. During the meeting it was agreed that RMR would, with the approval of RMR’s Board of Directors, mentor Scott and RMC in the coming months.

Scott was introduced to RMR’s Board at the following meet-ing, and the opportunity to mentor the local Audi Club was pitched. Naturally, RMR’s Board was more than willing to help the Audi Club in any way it could. Scott’s plan was to learn all he could about running track and autocross events. While at the same time he would be bringing with him Audi club members to participate in our events.

After the positive meeting with RMR’s Board, Scott jumped in with both feet to learn all he could. He and Shaun Seela became tech inspectors for RMR, where both helped with pre-techs and tech at the track. Scott and Shaun were at all the track events helping and learning when they weren’t learning how to drive their 718 Cayman GTS. They also attended most of the tours. Though, where Scott and the Audi Club really had the biggest impact was at the autocross events. Scott brought a team of RMC members to learn how to run autocross events by observing, helping and participating in the events. As I mentioned in my previous article, Scott even designed the Oc-tober course. If you didn’t make it to that one, you missed the fastest course we have had since I started autocrossing in 2013. Of course, as reported earlier, they were instrumental in mak-ing Eiskhana 2020 a success by running that event flawlessly. They also held one Quattrokhana event at Georgetown Lake which was also a huge success.

Towards the end of my meeting with Jim and Scott, a ques-tion was asked of Scott, “Where do you see the Audi Club in 5 years?” Scott said he would like to see the Rocky Mountain Chapter having regionalized groups that supported and ran ac-tivities in their own areas. He also wants to be able to recruit more volunteers for their activities. For now, he wants to focus on running monthly social events and growing their numbers. Eventually, Scott would like to see RMC holding their own autocross events.

In the short term, we can expect to see RMC members join-ing us at our track and autocross events. RMR will also be advising RMC on how to plan and run events. Then, since so many of us have an Audi for a daily driver, don’t be surprised if you see an Audi Corner written by an RMC guest writer in RMR’s newsletter before too long.

IN MEMORIAM : BILL JACKSON

BILL JACKSON (1931–2020)COLOR ADO’S FIRST & FOREMOST PORSCHE COLLECTOR

By Frank Barrett

One of Rocky Mountain Region’s most notable and long-term supporters, Dr. William E. Jackson, passed away in Den-ver on Wednesday, January 22nd. A PCA member for five de-cades, Bill was among the world’s first serious collectors and preservers of Porsche race and production models.

His comprehensive collection, in an unassuming warehouse at 22nd and California Street, reflected Bill’s understanding of Porsche history: Gmünd Coupe #017; a 1952 America Road-ster; a 1952 356 Cabriolet; an RS60, an Abarth Carrera; the ex-Ben Pon 904; a 1973 Carrera RS; one of just four Martini-liv-eried 1974 Carrera RSR Turbo factory racers; a 1968 911R; an Elva-Porsche; a 1974 RSR; and his champagne-yellow 356SC Cabriolet. Alongside stood a VW Schwimmwagen, a yellow 356A Speedster, a 914/6 pickup truck, a Porsche marine en-gine, and reams of Porsche posters, books, and literature. Bill loved low-mileage and limited-edition Porsches and ordered unusual examples: three orange Turbos, a 924 Carrera GTS, a 911SC/RS, a 911 Carrera Club Sport, a 911 Speedster, and many others.

Bill’s black 1960s Lincoln Continental Lehmann-Peterson limousine trailered the old Speedster to autocrosses. He also ran the Colorado Grand in the Speedster, the Abarth Carrera, and a red Super 90GT. His ivory 1960s Alfa Romeo Sprint Speciale completed the tour despite its passenger door fall-ing off near Gunnison. Frank Barrett recalls, “When the S90 wouldn’t run at 9,000 ft., he borrowed the Solexes from my 912. Re-installing them, I couldn’t find one nut. Fearing it had dropped into the engine, I spent hours looking for it, then finally found it under the fuel pump. We laughed about that.”

For more than 50 years, Bill was loyally supported by his partner and co-driver, Lynne Bentsen. Demure, proper, pretty, intelligent, and totally dedicated, she faithfully helped Bill care for his cars, often donning mechanic’s overalls for the job. As an elementary-school teacher, she often drove a silver 356A to work, occasionally switching to Bill’s 1960s Ferrari 375GTB, which must have raised eyebrows. When Bill was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2009, Lynne devoted a decade to car-ing for him in their apartment overlooking Cheesman Park.

For the record, Bill was born in New York City, attended Hartwick College, and earned his medical degree at the Uni-

This soapbox derby car gave Bill his early competition experi-ence; note the 1939 Packard in his parents’ garage.

versity of Rochester before coming to Colorado in 1958 to intern at Denver General Hospital. He spent two years as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in Korea at the 121st Evacuation Hospital treating eye-trauma cases, and at Fort Ord in California. When his Alfa broke down on a trip, Bill found his first Porsche, a Smyrna Green 1963 Super 90 coupe, at a nearby Porsche dealer.

Returning to Denver, Bill practiced with Dr. Ralph Daniels and Dr. John Long. Since he was the hardest-working doctor imaginable, his Franklin Street waiting room was always full, and he worked day and night helping thousands to improve their vision. After closing his practice, Bill volunteered at the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes and lectured worldwide on that topic. In 1998, he received the Stapleton Award for his years of hard work and significant contributions to preserving the eyesight of diabetic adults and children.

Frank Barrett also remembers, “In the 1970s, I advised Bill on buying the Rippey Collection’s automotive library and en-couraged him to buy the Gmünd Coupe for the then outrageous sum of $45,000.” Since Bill was private, access to his garage was limited, yet his friends respected his wishes. Many of his historic cars went to the Ingram Collection, which in 2014 pub-

lished a lavish 400-page book, Porsche Unexpected, dedicated to Bill and Lynne. Although Bill would probably be unhap-py at this being published, his huge and longtime involvement with Porsche demands to be honored and remembered.

From the early 1970s onward, Bill and Lynne competed in many RMR events. Their active presence at Parades, Fiesta del Porsche in Santa Fe, drivers’ schools, and social events helped to define the character and raise the enthusiasm of the Rocky Mountain Region. He will be missed.

During his long professional career as an eye surgeon, Bill helped thousands of people to see better.

IN THE ZONE

Rich SandersPCA Zone 9 Representative

It’s hard to think of membership in PCA as a computer-based pursuit. But I guess in these unusual times, it’s the right thing to do. Last month, I recapped all of the face-to-face, super exciting things we have in front of us for 2020. And as I’m sure you’ve read, most events in regions across the Zone have been put on hold or canceled. Just an hour or two before wrapping up this month’s letter, I read the official notice that Treffen at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs has been canceled. I’m sorry for the disappointment around the Zone among planned registrants. Even more so, for all of you who volunteered for the preparation and execution of this wonderful weekend, I’m sincerely sorry.

Now we’re all talking about “social distancing” and wondering if more great events in the Zone and beyond are going to happen. So if you’re stuck at home waiting out the Coronavirus, how can you get your Porsche Club fix. Of course there will be nice days for driving. But you can’t do that all the time.

Well, of course there’s Panorama. I sus-pect that a fair percent of PCA members are “Panorama members” who get the majority of their PCA experience from reading the magazine and seldom or never attending a scheduled club activity. But, then there’s you. If you are reading this, it’s probably because your region magazine covers all of the goings on in your region and you want to see the local cars and people. If that’s the case, perhaps you could spend a bit of social distance time either writing up a re-cent region event for a Panorama article or a similar article in support of your region’s newsletter editor.

What else? Well there’s PCA.org. There are several hidden gems to be found on the national website. Are you a member of your car’s registry? PCA has about 20 model-specific registries. The newest is that Taycan/Panamera registry. Join up. Each one has its own website full of histo-ry and includes forums for model-specific ownership experiences. You can chat live

across North America with other owners of your model.

While you’re in there at PCA.org, how about a little spring cleaning. Is your pro-file up to date? No? Well then, log in and clean it up. And if you’ve forgotten your password, just reset it. Need help? Call Charlotte at (401) 381-0911. She’ll be hap-py to help. It’s amazing how out-of-date the information is in the database. So let’s get your current garage occupants listed in there, as well as getting your associate or family member correctly listed and with the current email address. THANK YOU!

Do some online shopping at the PCA webstore under the membership drop-down menu. It’s virus free. Both Mother’s and Father’s Day will be here before you blink and there are some really nice cloth-ing options in there.

Research the value of your Porsche us-ing tools from Hagerty, Kelly, Leland and lots of others. These links are found at PCA.org and will help you value your car for insurance purposes.

And as I’ve men-tioned before, use PCA.org to register your youthful chil-dren or grandchil-dren in the PCA Ju-niors program.

And of course, make sure you

browse “The Mart”, PCA’s classified toy store where PCA members are individually selling their cars to other PCA members. It’s a fun read, even if you’re not shopping.

Finally, there’s a very cool new PCA ac-tivity called “PCA SIM Racing.” If you haven’t watched one of PCA’s Sim races, you’ll be amazed at the quality broadcast and competitive racing. You can support over 80 PCA member racers from regions across the entire Club and even comment your encouragement. Look for announce-ments at PCA.org.

Hopefully next month will be a better picture. But for now, let’s be aware of the need for the health and safety of ourselves, relatives and neighbors as we weather this challenge together.

Mark your calendars! The 37th Annual Colorado Concours d'Elegance is coming!

The Concours will be held on June 14th, 2020 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Arapahoe Community College Campus. The proceeds from the Concours will benefit Ability Connection Colorado's Creative Options for Early Childhood Education Centers. These centers provide early care, intervention, prevention, support and education services to over 600 infants, toddlers and pre-school children and their families each year.

The Concours typically sees over 14,000 spectators, who come out once a year to join car enthusiasts from all over Colorado and many other states who are showcasing over 500 limited production, rare sports and exotic cars.

The Porsche Club typically displays over 70 cars each year from the 356s to brand new cars.

Members of the Porsche Club started this event many years ago, so we always like to put on a great show for spectators by displaying a diverse group of cars.

If this is your first time attending the event, here is some basic information:

There are many ways to be involved in the event:

1) Register your car, 2) Volunteer, 3) Attend as a spectator, or 4) Become a Sponsor.

If you are interested in registering your car in the event, you have a couple of options:

• Display Only – No Judging • Club Judged - Judging based on cleanliness of the interior and exterior

Elite Concours Group - Judging based on a subjective review of each car in the class The Concours Class has been renamed to the Elite Concours Group to avoid confusion.

Registration to enter your car in the show is NOW OPEN at: coloradoconcours.org

The show is fun for all; however we can’t do it without some help. We are looking for volunteers to help with the entrance gate, parking and general help on the field. This is a great way to see the show and spend your day in the Colorado sunshine. Volunteers will also receive free entry, a free poster and free lunch!

Just visit coloradoconcours.org to sign up, be a volunteer or register as a Sponsor.

Sponsorship has many different levels.

Additional information will be provided in future newsletters leading up to the event.

“TSCHU55” on a Porsche Boxster S.

“Tschüss” is German slang for “bye”, but with attitude, like “Buh-bye.” The traditional spelling was taken, so the last two Ss were substituted with 5s. Many people look at it, and think that Russ is a skier! LOL!

I GET AROUND

Danielle BadlerRMR/PCA Columnist

You say you’re pining for the scream of an F1 engine? You’re shaking for those in-car views that seem like they’re running at 2x speed, only they’re actually real time? You miss that life-size drama about careers that have been pointed toward a seat in F1 since the protagonists were eight years old?

Well, bunkie, I’ve got a solution for you. Formula 1: Drive to Survive, season two. You can find it on Netflix. And it’s free. Ten episodes. And, of course, Netflix makes it really easy to binge-view the production. After an episode ends, you do nothing. The system automatically segues to the next one.

A year ago, I reviewed season one. I found it thoroughly enlightening. Like peeling the onion on what actually goes on, especially behind the scenes. The love, the hate, the pressure, the support networks that all the drivers seem to have. Oh, and the racing. The racing itself was almost secondary. Almost, but not quite. Because the cinematography has flashes of brilliance. Even if you know what’s going to happen.

Last time around, Mercedes and Ferrari didn’t participate. As a result, the producers were forced to cover everyone else. Which really amplified the drama associated with all the teams trying to be “best of the rest.” The drivers, the team principals, the whole traveling circus.

Yes, it’s back. Only, this time around, with Mercedes and Ferrari also participating. I know, I know. Don’t worry; of course they’re covered, but not to the detriment of the rest of the field.

I don’t know if it’s just me. But I keep trying to think of another sport which has opened its doors to the fan in such a t ransparent way. I know there are limitations in the series. No glimpses into driver negotiations, for example. No shots of drivers being told their services will no longer be needed. No analysis of performance data. No idea of just what the actual performance envelope of an F1 car actually is today. Other than the fact that they’re faster than last year’s cars.

But, then again, can you name another sport that has allowed us into its inner circle?

Friends, managers, parents, trainers. The good-natured kidding between teammates in the paddock. Counterposed by the same drivers out on the circuit, bouncing off each other.

I came away from season 1 with a totally new appreciation for the whole crazy affair. And the kids … ok, we can call most of them young adults … who have devoted virtually all of their formative years to one dream. To be an F1 “pilot.” You see them literally pinching themselves. Has this been done before? With the exception of the movie Senna, I don’t think so.

The story theme that occupies much of the narrative revolves around Pierre Gasley, now in Daniel Ricciardo’s seat at Red Bull, trying to establish himself. Christian Horner, Red Bull Team Principal, says, “If they’re good enough, they survive. If they’re not good enough…. The thing is, who’s good enough to partner with Max Verstappen. P7 or 8 or 9 has no value to us.”

We visit Gasley at home, a home he left at 13 to go karting. We’re there when he finds out that Antoine Hubert has suffered a fatal crash in the F2 race. They’ve been close friends since they both went karting. We see the photos. And we’re there when Gasley learns he’s been demoted to Toro Rosso, his seat at Red Bull taken by Alex Albon who also raced karts with Gasley and Hubert. Who, one year ago, was also in F2. Helmut Marko: “He has nine races to prove himself, and the seat is his in 2020.”

Albon’s first race for Red Bull is at Spa. Verstappen drops out at the start. Albon goes from 14th to 5th. His career best. In his Red Bull debut.

Cyr i l Abiteboul, team pr incipal at Renault: “I know that, if I don’t deliver, my life expectancy is very short.” His dilemma is what to do about Nico Hulkenberg who, we learn, has had the longest career in F1 without a podium. There’s no way he doesn’t think about it, says journalist Will Buxton.

At Hockenheim, in that great equalizer, the rain, Hulkenberg rises to P2. And spins out. “You can’t blame the elements, can’t blame the track, can’t blame the car,” says

Abiteboul. For 2020, his seat is taken by Esteban Ocon who has been reserve driver for Mercedes.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff, addressing the team at the star t of the season, “We must manage expectations, stay modest.” At Monaco, mourning the death of Niki Lauda, “Niki had the ability to make things happen. He called Lewis (Hamilton) to get him to come to the team. Otherwise, he would not do it…. Niki would say the most painful incidents are the ones where we learn the most. We recover and come out stronger.”

Claire Williams: “As a child I didn’t understand how famous my dad was. I don’t want to disgrace the Williams name. I don’t want the team to fall apart under me … this is a family business. I took this job to protect a legacy.” She holds the title Deputy Team Principal, under her father, Frank, who’s shown mostly in the background, in his wheelchair.

Their season is summed up by driver George Russell at Silverstone. “Obviously, I want to be world champion. And I believe I will get there one day. The teams know your (personal) performance. But I’m driving around in 19th position, week in and week out. I don’t want to be there.” At the end of the race, Russell says, “Lap after lap, the car’s like a yoyo. I feel like an idiot.”

The series concludes with a big nod toward 2020. Zak Brown, McLaren Team Principal, notes that they have had a successful season, but they have a long way to go if they want to catch the top three. Their driver Carlos Sainz has proven very competitive in his first season for them.

And Gasley … Gasley! … has seized a P2 in Brazil with Toro Rosso, his first podium ever, with Lewis behind him. “Thank God! This is the best day of my life,” he says.

2020 looks to be one of the biggest years ever. A majority of drivers have contracts that expire at the end of the season. It’s a new chapter. As if. At this writing, the first six races of 2020 are canceled. Enjoy the Netf lix series. It’s all we’ve got. But it’s worth it.

DRIVING EVENTSTOUR

A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event.

RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade.

RALLYA rally is a competitive event in which

contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type.

Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies—at least one of each type—are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year.

AUTOCROSS (AX)An autocross is a competition in which

drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around 40-65 MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals — typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit.

Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade

DRIVER EDUCATION (DE)A driver education event provides a

safe, controlled environment for high-performance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the pr imar y emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming!

As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc.

RMR hosts six DE’s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike’s Peak International Raceway tracks.

CLUB RACEA club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing

event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and “heats” (race sessions), often involving both “sprint” and “endurance” races.

Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMR-hosted “First Ever Anywhere” club race at Second Creek in 1992.

Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up!

RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend!

NON-DRIVING EVENTSMEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an oppor-tunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a mem-bership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening’s program. The content of the program var-ies, sometimes featuring a “slide show” from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Chal-lenge racer Randy Pobst.

Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member!

TECH SESSIONA tech session is just what it sounds

like–a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, “do-it-yourself ” procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by exper ienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear.

RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the “off months” when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d’Elegance

A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to “perfect” condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation (“daily driver” or “full preparation” or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as “display only,” for owners who wish to participate but not compete.

RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Spor ts Car Show and Concours d’Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year.

WHAT WE DOWhether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more.
