Architecture and design
CBI member Arup announced that, after more than five years of design and construction, the Midfield
Concourse at the Hong Kong
International Airport (HKIA) is in
full operation. Located to the west of
Terminal 1 and between the two
existing runways at the airport, the
five-level concourse has a total floor
area of 105,000 square metres, with
ceiling heights comparable to those
of Terminal 1. There are 20 aircraft
parking stands, 19 of which are
bridge-served, including two Code F
(A380) stands. Passengers will also
be connected to Terminal 1 via an extended automated people mover (APM). A joint venture between Arup
and CBI member Mott MacDonald has been working on the detailed design of this project since June 2010,
providing full multidisciplinary design and construction support. Its scope of services is wide-ranging and
includes structure, MEP, airport systems, façade, sustainability, APM, fire, baggage handling system,
acoustics, logistics, and project management. The joint venture has been supported by the architect Aedas,
who has also worked closely with OTC Limited on the planning of the Concourse. Mott MacDonald and
Arup have worked together on many similar projects, including Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 1
and Heathrow Terminal 5, and individually have played key roles in many major airport projects around the
world. Read more here.
In additional news, Arup also revealed its vision for future cities and launched a mentorship programme to
mark its 40 years in Hong Kong. The
dedicated event, themed ‘Our Future
City’, was held on 22 April at the
Rotunda, Exchange Square, Central,
attracting more than 200 guests from
across sectors including senior
government officials, clients, and
working partners, Through a unique
live performance of visual, light, and
sound, Arup pointed an overarching
direction to design future cities – Smart
Green Resilient, and navigated visitors
through different aspects of future
urban living, from buildings and
transport to energy and air quality. The event also witnessed the kickoff of the yearlong ‘20+20’ mentorship
programme. Under the scheme, 20 Arup staff will be mentors to 20 Secondary 5 students, giving advice and
guidance on education and career goals. In a series of meet-ups, creative workshops, and shadowing

education. Read more here.
CBI member Atkins announced that Duke Kunshan University, officially opened in mid-2014, is a state-of-
the-art campus located in Kunshan, China. It is the first Chinese university campus to be certified by the
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) campus programme, with all five campus
buildings certified according to LEED standards by the US Green Building Council. The LEED gold
certificate was recently awarded to its Academic Building and Conference Centre, while the Student
Residence, Faculty Residence, and Service Building received LEED silver certification. Faithful+Gould,
part of the Atkins Group, was brought on board as the building sustainability consultants to help the
university realise its green aspirations. It worked with the client and project team to develop and integrate
green solutions into the planning, design, construction, and operation of the campus buildings to reduce
environmental impact at every stage of their life cycle. Moreover, it provided third-party testing and
commissioning services on the campus systems and equipment including the HVAC, BMS, plumbing,
firefighting, electrical, and extra-low voltage systems to ensure the buildings are handed over to operate
safely and are energy efficient, climate-responsive, and in accordance to the university’s stringent design
requirements.
CBI member Benoy announced its appointment to the Xuhui Vanke Centre in Shanghai. This is developer
Vanke’s first large-scale commercial
real estate project with a mixed-use
programme in the city. The landmark
sits at a prime location adjacent to the
Shanghai South Railway Station, the
city’s second most prominent station
after the Shanghai Railway Station.
The overall scheme is being developed
over three phases, with Benoy as the
Chief Architect delivering the final
phase alongside Skidmore, Owings,
and Merrill LLP (SOM). Connecting
six commercial blocks, the scheme
aims to create a new urban complex set within a 70,000-square metre landscaped realm. The three phases
are connected by a mile-long green valley which runs diagonally across the site. The wider development’s
12 buildings overlook and interact with the urban parkland, which essentially brings a green streetscape
experience into the heart of the development. The green belt begins at the Shanghai South Railway Station
edge and continues through to a museum and arts complex which anchors the journey. The final phase of the
development has commenced construction and is due to be completed by 2019. Read more here.

CBI member King’s College London announced that the start of a major construction project to deliver an
international-level hospital and nursing college in Jiangsu province was marked at
a ground breaking ceremony in Nanjing. The ceremony celebrated the launch of
the five-year collaborative partnership agreed between King’s College London’s
Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery and the Nanjing Health
School China in December 2015. The project will see King’s providing
consultancy, education, and training to the Nanjing healthcare workforce and to
establish a new ‘Nanjing Nightingale Nursing College’. The pairing of the most distinguished nursing
faculty in the U.K., working alongside a tripartite relationship of the Nanjing State Government, a brand-
new hospital, and a nursing college will create a model for future research and educational partnership. The
contract, worth some £5 million, was part of a £2 billion package of agreements between China and the U.K.
announced during President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the U.K. last year. Attendees at the ceremony included
British Ambassador to China Barbara Woodward, Consul General John Edwards, key representatives from
Jiangsu province’s education, local, and regional government organisations, King’s College London’s Dean
of the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery Professor Ian Norman, and representatives
from King’s China offices. Ambassador Woodward said, “I believe strongly that such partnerships can
match the very best of U.K. expertise with the spirit of ambition and innovation so clearly present here in
Nanjing. As many of you know, Florence Nightingale established the world’s first school of nursing at St.
Thomas’ Hospital in London in 1860. And it is appropriate that such a pioneering and iconic name now

CBI member Middlesex University’s MSc in Building Information Modelling (BIM) Management is a
global success story and due to popular demand in
the region, the University will – for the first time –
be offering the programme’s two-day induction in
Hong Kong. The distance learning MSc has
proved to be a global phenomenon, with 125
candidates from 26 different countries. The online,
blended learning nature of the programme means
that it can be completed anywhere in the world.
However, the two-day induction where industry
professionals meet one another and learn how to
access online materials, webinars, and other tools
that they will need, is usually delivered at Middlesex University’s flagship campus in London. After
significant interest from Hong Kong companies, individuals, and industry professionals the University has
taken the decision to run the two-day induction in Hong Kong, hoping that this will further encourage people
who will no longer need to make the journey to London – thus benefitting companies and the course
participants. The University also hopes that it will encourage individuals from other countries where
travelling to Hong Kong would be easier than making the journey to London. The induction will take place
in September 2016. The programme itself provides construction professionals the developmental tools they
require to manage the benchmarks bought forward by the new global BIM mandates and stay competitive in
an ever-changing marketplace. Read more here.

Basin in China. Witnessed by BP Group Chief Executive Bob Dudley and CNPC Chairman Wang Yilin, the
contract is BP’s first shale gas PSC in China and covers an area of approximately 1,500 square kilometres.
CNPC will be the operator for this project. Mr. Dudley said, “We are pleased to reach this significant
milestone as part of our strategic partnership with CNPC, building on our successful cooperation in and
outside of China. We are looking forward to working together with CNPC on technology, operational and
subsurface techniques in unconventional resources. We will bring our worldwide experience to our first
unconventional gas project in onshore China with CNPC. We will combine this with CNPC’s knowledge
and experience to bring gas to China’s growing clean energy market. China continues to be an important
part of BP’s portfolio.” This PSC is the first achievement from BP and CNPC’s framework agreement on
strategic cooperation that was signed last October during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to the
U.K. In addition to unconventional resources, the framework agreement covers possible future fuel retailing
ventures in China, exploration of oil and LNG trading opportunities globally, and carbon emissions trading
as well as sharing of knowledge around low carbon energy and management practices. CNPC Chairman
Wang said, “CNPC and BP’s existing cooperation covers various areas, including retail business in China,
overseas upstream exploration and development, and international trading. Building upon the framework
agreement on strategic cooperation signed last year, this unconventional resource PSC is a manifestation of
our deepening cooperation. By leveraging the parties’ complementary advantages, CNPC and BP will
jointly realize the efficient development of unconventional resources.” BP’s Energy Outlook (2016 edition)
expects that by 2035 shale gas will account for a quarter of the total gas produced globally, and China will
become the world’s largest contributor to growth in shale gas production. Edward Yang, BP China President,
said, “As a new strategic industry for China, the exploration, development, and production of shale gas will
significantly benefit China’s energy mix in a long run. Through this PSC, BP once again clearly reaffirms
our commitment to being one of China’s preferred energy partners to support the country in developing
cleaner energy for a greener future.” Read more here.
CBI member Rolls-Royce and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) further strengthened their
strategic collaboration in civil nuclear power with contracts signed in China. The two companies agreed to
specific engineering and consultancy services to be provided by Rolls-Royce to CNNC, including the
