    During second quarter at Science Academy of Chicago, the 5th grade class collabo-rated with Pre-kindergarten 3 to show their appreciation for the Mount Prospect Fire and Police Departments. While the students worked together, they crafted items for both fire-fighters and police officers. 5th grade also wrote thank-you letters. Upon delivery of the gifts, the firemen and police officers appreciated being recognized and thanked by their local com-munity!

    public. The Fibonacci numbers are Nature's numbering system. They appear eve-rywhere in Nature, from the leaf arrangement in plants, to the pattern of the flo-

    rets of a flower, the bracts of a pine cone, or the scales of a pineapple. The Fibo-

    nacci numbers are therefore applicable to the growth of every living thing, includ-ing a single cell, a grain of wheat, a hive of bees, and even all of mankind. No-

    Water Bottle Flipping: Often hated by parents, frowned upon by teachers, comes the water bottle flipping craze. Who knew that flipping a plastic bottle and landing it on it's cap or on it's bottom would be a craze? There are insane videos of people flipping water bottles everywhere. When will you stop the urge to flip a plastic bottle that isn't all the way full?

    Mannequin Challenge: Do you like do-ing challenges with your friends? This challenge is

    perfect for you. The mannequin challenge is when everyone in your surroundings freeze while doing wacky things. And a cameraman is walking around those people showing the viewers.

    Andy’s Coming Challenge: If you have ever watched the most popular Pixar movie, Toy Story, you know that Andy’s toys become alive when Andy’s not aware. But when Andy comes back into his room, the toys drop down as if they are dead so Andy doesn't know they're alive. The same principle is applied when one person shouts, “ Andy’s coming!” and everyone drops down to the floor and acts dead.

    Juju on That Beat: One of the best dance crazes after the whip and nae nae, comes the Juju. A dance created and written by Crime Mob.

    Eat it or Wear it Challenge: A challenge that originated from youtube, it is when someone puts mysterious foods into bags and you have to eat it. If you don't want to, you must “wear” the food.

    The Gummy Challenge: When you must sacrifice your taste buds for the views. Basically, a friend must put something on a plate and the gummy version of it. The two people playing have to eat the one they get gummy or real. One example is getting gummy worms, and your friend has to eat the actual worms!

    Lyric Pranks: The prank where you must pick a victim from your contacts, and text them lyrics of any song of your choice. Just wait for their response...

    As some may already know, we had our second mock election at SAOC. The first mock election took place four years ago.

    During this year’s mock election, we picked our school’s very own vice president and president. There were four candidates for presi-dent: Shaan, Sedat, Bilge, and Fatima from Eighth grade. The vice presidential candidates were Mucteba and Bruce from Seventh grade. Students Fourth grade and up voted for the can-didates. As you probably heard, Sedat is our president, and Mucteba is our vice president. Congratulations!

    The mock election process was very similar to the actual thing. In actual voting, you must have a primary or caucus to determine candidates for voting. We did the same except it was like a closed primary because it was held only for the class that the candidate came from. After the “closed primary” the candidates were off to get voted for. It is also similar because we have a vice presiden-tial debate and speeches from all of our candidates.

    In conclusion, it is important for a school to hold a mock election so everyone can learn about the process of election. The creator/sponsor was Social Studies teacher, Mr. Martinez. We thank Mr. Martinez for his dedication.

    Science Academy of Chicago has designated its very own student president and vice-president! Our President is Eighth grader, Sedat Akgun. Com-ing up second in power, our vice-president from Seventh grade is Mucteba Yazici. As the election tension is broken, these two victors have risen to the top. Now the only question is, will they do what they have promised?

    President Sedat Akgun is excited to hold this important position. President Sedat says, "I want to lead the students that look up to me to get the rights that they deserve."

    Pres. Sedat has a lot of support from the student body at SAOC. He has seen students dealing with similar struggles, and is willing to help them. At the end of the interview, once I asked for a con-clusion sentence, this is what he has said, with a laugh, "I'm going to be a good president hopefully."

    Vice-president, Mucteba Yazici is second in power. With the cooperation of the president, we, as a school, expect great leagues from him. Both Pres. Sedat and Vice-Pres. Mucteba hope to voice the opinions of SAOC student body and strengthen our school even more this year.

    Do you want to study more? Get better grades? If so, attend the Individual Mentoring Program (I.M.P) program. The program’s purpose is to help students get better grades, study more, and prepare for high school. The program is for 6th graders and up. All I.M.P students have the option to complete

    their homework during homework hour.

    Then, they attend particular classes with specific schedules. For example after the homework

    hour, the 6th graders attend Mrs. Meral’s math class for an hour. Then, there is a ten minute break for everyone. Afterwards, Mr. Akif administers practice exams for test preparation.

    There are mentors for each class. For example, the 7th grade girls’ mentor is Mrs. Cavus and the boys’ is Mr. Uzun. Sometimes the mentors take their group on field trips. I.M.P takes place every Wednes-

    day after school until 6:00 o’clock. The program takes place in the classrooms of SAOC.

    Donald J. Trump was born

    on June 14, 1946, in Queens, a neighborhood in New York City.

    His siblings are Maryanne, Fred, Elizabeth, and Robert. Trump's

    older brother Fred Jr. died in 1981

    from alcoholism, which led Donald into abstain from alcohol and ciga-

    rettes. Trump’s father was a German and His mother was Scottish. Donald at school was a bit of a trouble-

    maker so his dad put him in New York Military Acade-my.

    Trump did well at the academy, both socially and academically, rising to be a star athlete and stu-

    dent leader. He graduated in 1964. He en-

    tered Fordham University and then transferred to the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsyl-

    vania, from which he graduated in 1968 with a

    degree in economics.

    Even though Hillary won the popular vote by 2 million, Donald Trump still won the Electoral Col-lege vote. More than 50 percent of U.S citizens did not vote at all, of the people who did vote Hil-lary got 50.8 and Trump got 49.2.

    Hillary Diane Rodham Clin-ton was born in October 26, 1947 (age 69), Edgewater Hospital, Chi-cago, raised in the suburban town of Park Ridge, Illinois.

    She graduated with honors in 1973, from Yale University Law School. While her husband, President Bill Clinton was in office, Hillary was First Lady of the United States. During this time, Clinton led the unsuccessful effort to enact the Clinton health care plan of 1993.

  • Attention all shoppers!

    Do you like deals? Do you like waiting in lines? Do you like crowds? Then, you will like shopping on Black Friday. Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving. It is the unofficial beginning of the holiday shopping season.

    The term “Black Friday” was first used in 1869 referring to the collapse of the US gold market. In 1961, it was used by the Philadelphia police department to describe the heavy traffic and crowds of shoppers. Later, the retailers tried to explain the use of “Black Friday” in accounting terms as the day when they started to make a profit, going from “red” to “black”.

    Black Friday became more popular in the 80’s and 90’s. Over the years, stores started to open their doors earlier and earlier. In 2011, some stores started to open their stores at midnight. The following year stores started to open their doors on Thanksgiving Day. This year some stores even offered their Black Friday special deals online.

    The most important thing to remember is to stay safe (some people even got trampled on)! If you miss the deals on Black Friday, keep in mind there is always Cyber Monday.

    The first Starbucks opened in Seattle, Washington, on March 31, 1971. Three partners met while they were students at the University of San Francisco. They were English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl, and a writer Gordan Bowker. The three were inspired to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment by coffee roasting [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starbucks]. Starbucks first made money in early 1980. It expanded into the Midwest. Starbucks is the most popular coffee shop in the world (indicated green on the map)! Usu-ally when I go to Starbucks, the line is out the door. This tells me that they have the best coffee and drinks! So next time you want coffee, stop at Starbucks!

    Pokémon anime, and the first season of the X&Y se-

    friends, Clemont and Bonnie, and where Ash reunites with his childhood friend Serena.

    In this series, Ash will catch new Kalos Pokémon, and make new rivals along the way to com-

    pete in the Kalos League and learning about the secrets of Mega Evolution.

    Pokémon: Black & White episode #1: a review

    I think the first episode of Pokemon Black &White is full of suspense. Why? Because Ash and his Pikachu go to professor Junipers lab to get their first pokemon in Unova. There they meet a new starter trainer named Trip. He takes photos of rare pokemon in Unova. So when he took a photo of Ash’s Pikachu, Ash was confused. “ It is rare to find a Pikachu in Unova,” Trip explained to Ash.

    Since Trip’s goal was to fight strong rare pokemon, he chose his first pokemon, Snivy. Then he challenged Ash to a battle with Pikachu. Ash accepted, but when the battle began, Pikachu’s elec-tric attacks weren’t working. Because of Pikachu’s loss of electricity, Ash lost the battle. Trip walked away in disgust saying Pikachu wasn’t worthy enough since it couldn’t use electric type moves. He

    walked away before Ash could explain what happened.

    Later on, Ash recalled a strange storm he had experi-enced when he first stepped foot in Unova. It was about to blow Pikachu away. So he asked Professor Juniper for help. She told him that for some reason Pikachu couldn’t build up enough electricity. So then Professor Juniper put Pikachu in a machine and gave it electricity. Pikachu was fine!

    Although she had cured Pikachu, Professor Juniper had a hunch that Pikachu’s loss of electricity had something to do with the earlier storm. So I believe that this builds a lot of suspense since the viewers will want to know what or who is the cause behind this. Also, why did they do it?

    Forever Yogurt is the place to be if you want to celebrate, if you’re hungry, bored or even if you just want to hangout. Next time your mouth waters for something delicious, make a beeline to the nearest Forever

    Yogurt right away!

    Zootopia: Movie review

    Have you ever seen a movie with a prey and predator working

    together to solve a huge mystery

    case? Well, Zootopia is all about that! From the largest elephant to the

    tiniest mouse, the city of Zootopia is a mammal metropolis where different

    varieties of animals live and thrive.

    When Judy Hopps becomes

    the first rabbit to join the police force, she learns how tough it is to enforce

    the law. But she is determined to

    prove herself, Judy jumps at the opportunity to solve a mysterious

    case. Sadly, that means working with Nick Wilde, a sly and witty fox who is a nuisance to Judy.

    Zootopia released on March 4th. And made a smashing box office of $1.023 billion! The directors are Byron Howard and Rich Moore. They also directed the movies Frozen, Wreck-It Ralph, and Big Hero 6.

    What I really liked about the movie is that they use representation. For example, labeling. In the movie there are labeling. Just like real life. In real life there are people labeling each other. Another example is that it

    represents that life is messy and the outcome could be wonderful if you believe and have hope.

    Secondly, I really like how they created the characters and their characteristics. For example, I really

    like the way they made Nick’s tail because it’s so fluffy. Finally, what I love about the movie is how clever they made Judy and Nick. If I could rate out of five I would rate billions!

  • character review: Gaara the Sand Shinobi

    Gaara wasn’t always a shinobi that everyone loved. In fact,

    the people of the Village Hidden in the Sand and his home village

    were afraid of young little Gaara. He is the youngest of the Three

    Sand Siblings. They are the strongest young shinobi of the village

    hidden in the sand. He has an older sister named Temari who is older

    than his older brother Kankuro. Gaara is the youngest out of all

    three. Anyway, why do I feel bad for him?? Duh it is he grew up in a

    life of sadness and despair. Poor little Gaara was feared because he

    held the jinchūriki (人柱力, Literally meaning: Power of Human Sacri-

    fice) are humans that have tailed beasts sealed within them. They

    exhibit extraordinary powers due to the immense chakra reserves

    they possess. Gaara posesses the one tailed beast Shukaku. People

    were scared it might take over.

    I feel really bad for Gaara since everyone hated or feared

    him, and his mother died giving birth to him. Despite all that hap-

    pened, in the end Gaara learned to love others from Naruto (a ninja

    from the Village hidden in the leaf to love). Naruto could teach him

    since he knew how it felt to be hated. For he too held the power of a

    tailed beast. So I am grateful to Naruto for what he did. I am glad

    that Gaara learned to love❤.

    Movie review: the underdogs By: Tuba Korkmaz

    The Underdogs is a movie about two kids competing with a game

    of foosball. The kids are Jake and Ace. Ace thinks he is unbeatable, but af-ter Jake beat him in the match, Ace got really mad. A few years later, Ace

    became a famous soccer player. He asked Jake to a real soccer match to save the town.

    At first, Jake did not want to play; however, Laura, his motivator, told him to play because the town’s hand was in his hands. Since everybody

    knew that he was terrible at soccer, he needed his foosball team, but Ace had them. In the end, Jake, Laura, and most of the town help them find the

    missing pieces.
