SONG TEACHING STEPS

“Run, Run, Shepherds” Song Teaching Steps, page 1 All Creation Sings Fall—Preschool © 2017 Celebrating Grace, Inc. All rights reserved.

“Run, Run, Shepherds”1. Listen and move.

• Have children stand in a line, placing yourself at the front as the leader and placing another adult at the end.

• Play Demo 10, and lead children to perform a “slow-motion” run around the room by stepping to the quarter-note beat and moving arms as if running during Section A (meas. 5-12).

• Have children stop during Section B (meas. 13-21), and pretend to rock Baby Jesus on the half-note beat.

• Have children resume “slow-motion” running after measure 21.

2. Teach the melody pattern in measure 5.• Sing measures 5-12.

• Ask children who was running and why. (The shepherds were running to see Baby Jesus.)

• Discuss times we like to run. (when we are happy or excited, to get a treat, to see someone special, etc.)

• Read Luke 2:15-16 from the Bible:

“The angels left and went into heaven. Then the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem. Let’s see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’ So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the baby. The baby was lying in the manger.”*

• Tell children we know the shepherds were running because the Bible says they hurried to find Baby Jesus.

• Display the C, E, and G resonator bells in order from left to right.

• Sing the Run, run, shepherds pattern from measure 5 while playing the pitches on the bells. (Be sure to demonstrate the short/long rhythm of shepherds accurately.)

& 44 œ œjœ œ ‰

do mi sol sol

• Have children sing the pattern with you several times.

• Allow volunteers to play the pattern on the bells as all sing.

Teaching TipDisplay the Do, Mi, and Sol Solfège Monkey Visuals, and practice singing and shaping each pitch. Children can take turns playing the pattern on the bells as everyone sings and shapes the pitches together.
