Celebrating Healthcare Careers: Resource Pack
For teachers: Due to the current health climate, we thought it would be a good opportunity to continue promoting careers in health and care with young people and we hope that schools can share these resources with students to help engage them in the careers and opportunities with the NHS, and become involved in thanking key workers during this healthcare crisis. We would appreciate it if these resources could be used as part of your students’ home learning, or perhaps activities the students can do if they’re still attending school; thank you. The Health Careers website has seen a 223% increase in the number of people expressing an interest in a career in nursing (figures published by Health Education England (HEE) on the 17th April 2020). Due to the prevalence of the NHS in the public eye at the moment, now is a good opportunity to raise awareness of the many exciting and varied opportunities available; there are over 350 different careers in the NHS! Considering the NHS is one of the largest employers in Cornwall, there are many career options for young people to aspire to. If these activities are not of any use now, perhaps they could be of use for the Careers/Work Experience Lead in your school or for the teacher of Health and Social Care later on. Further resources for lessons can also be found online: KS4: https://www.stepintothenhs.nhs.uk/secondary-schools/KS4-resources-3 and https://www.medicalmavericks.co.uk/science-experiments Thank you for your support. We look forward to hopefully seeing some of your students work, and we wish
you, your colleagues, and students all the best.
For students:
We work at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, and we are known as ‘Get In Cornwall’. We help to organise work experience for young people, anyone considering a career change, we host career events at RCHT, and we also work with schools to help raise awareness of the 350+ careers that are available in the NHS. As you’re probably aware, many NHS staff are working tirelessly in the current health crisis that the UK is facing and now is a good time to recognise, appreciate, and celebrate all of the different healthcare professionals. As we are unable to come and visit you in your school to inspire you about all of the different opportunities available in the NHS, we thought we would send you some resources and activities that you can do at home. Some of the activities can be shared with us; we would love to display some of your work to help give our colleagues a positive boost. If you share your work with us, please include your school and which year you are in. We won’t share your name. Please feel free to share any photos of your work to Get In Cornwall on Facebook (or get your parents to
share it with us) or email us at [email protected]. We would love to see the work you’ve done
around healthcare careers, share with us your ambitions, or anything new you have learnt about healthcare
careers.
Thank you for supporting the NHS and we wish you all of the best in these tricky times.

Celebrating Healthcare Careers
Resources/Activities
Creative task: For those of you who enjoy being creative, or are taking Art as a GCSE option, to
show your appreciation for the NHS and keyworkers, please feel free to draw some artwork using
any medium. On A4 paper, create a collage, a comic, write a poem, draw an illustration…and send
to Get In Cornwall, Knowledge Spa, Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, Truro, Cornwall, TR1 3HD
or scan and email to [email protected]
We will then display your creation in the entrance to the Knowledge Spa, and NHS staff will be able to see your work when they come to the Knowledge Spa for their training. We will also share your work with staff across RCHT through our online communications too (we won’t share your name, but which school you attend and which year group you are in would be handy). Our Communications team are also looking for a new banner too so you’re artwork could become the face of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust!
Colouring-In: An alternative creative task is to colour in the attached colouring sheets, which will
help with mindfulness too. These colouring-in sheets have been kindly provided by various artists
and providers. Please send in to the address above where we will put your work on display. Follow
this link for further colouring-in sheets which various artists have designed
https://www.nhsmillion.co.uk/nhs-posters and there are plenty more online if you search for free
colouring-in sheets on Google.
Letters of Support and Well Wishes: RCHT’s Chaplaincy Team have set up an initiative called
‘Letters of Support and Well Wishes’ where you can write letters of support and well wishes to
patients currently in hospital. These will then be laminated and given to patients to help brighten
their day. Please email these to [email protected]
Map your career: Are you thinking about what you would like to do after you finish school and
college? Find out which NHS careers would suit you. Click on the links below and answer the
questions:

Fortune Teller: Use this interactive origami ‘fortune teller’ to help predict your future health career.
Could you be a future Dietician or Diagnostic Radiographer?
Mindfullness/Mental Health- Positivity Photo Challenge: There are many career opportunities
within the NHS linked to mental health. It’s also important to still look after our mental health during
this times of change as well. While we’re in lockdown, it’s a good time to pause and reflect. Take
this time to appreciate what is around you and reflect on what you may have taken for granted
before. Use this opportunity to take part in our positivity photo challenge. Take a photo of whatever
has made you smile that day- it could be a cake that you’ve made, a beautiful flower that you
noticed on your daily exercise, reading your favourite book in your garden. Use that photo to remind
yourself to appreciate the small things in your current daily life whilst in lockdown and send the
photo to us at Get In Cornwall. Your positivity photo might inspire someone else!
3
Following on from this, please see the How Many Positives worksheet to further help with looking
for positives. Add two or 3 comments per shape e.g. I have people around me who trust and love
me. By thinking positively then we can affect our mood and levels of happiness, and hopefully it will
become a habit!
Research project: There is more to the NHS than Doctors and Nurses (as valuable as they are),
there are also non-clinical posts as well as all of the clinical careers. NHS carers range from Art
Therapists, to Plumbers, to Medical Secretaries. Research different careers in the NHS and create
a project around the career you like the sound of, or perhaps a project linked to your chosen top 5
careers. Your project can take any form- utilise your skills. Could it be an animated film? A
presentation? An infographic? Recruitment poster? An advert to be used online?
Your work could even feature on our new ‘Get In’ website which will hopefully be launched this year.
What is the career? What qualifications do you need? What do you like about that particular career?
What have you learnt about that career?

A sports injury patient journey worksheet: Follow Danny’s patient journey after he injured his leg
playing football. How many different healthcare professionals does Danny come into contact with?
Knowing your NHS card match-up activity: Using the injury/illness cards, match up with the
service you think is most appropriate to each injury or illness (table graphic resource). You could
match them up and then make further notes on why that service would help those injuries or
illnesses; what is the benefit of using that service? Could there be any alternative services for that
injury/illness? Please note: There may often be more than one appropriate solution and most
services can advise or treat multiple conditions. Please find a little quiz on the PowerPoint too.
Example: Accidental Snakes and Emergency Ladders game Players progress through the levels of qualification to become an A&E doctor (from Step into the NHS)
Example: Poster of an app to promote Health Informatics and supporting materials (from Step into the NHS)

Guess the body part from the ultrasound images: See if you can correctly identify the 13 body
ultrasound images on the PowerPoint. Send us your score and we’ll see which school scores the
highest!
Thank you for getting involved and whichever activity you chose to do please email us a picture or send us
your work. We would love to see what you have done to help celebrate and learn about the NHS.
