President’s Diary I have been reading a lot of magazines from like-minded clubs as ours from around the country and its amazing how many similar issues that we all face. One that sticks out is the chal-lenge of asbestos being a real chal-lenge when importing vehicles, even

when they are returning from overseas rallies. Many hor-ror stories have been told of cars not being allowed back into the country until they can be certified as 100% asbes-tos free, leading to very costly remediation work. This is not only for brakes but also can include head gaskets, manifolds etc…one to be aware of! These magazines are really interesting and are often to sent to Editor Geoff, let him know if you would like to be included in the distribution list. I mentioned in last months EA that we are enjoying our 60th year this year. One of our most important events is the club display at Hyde Park Fair on Monday 5th of March. This is a fabulous day with lots of wonderful at-

tractions at the Fair to keep all ages interested. We have lots of cars in the club that we don’t see often so I am hoping that we see huge numbers there, really showing the public the diversity of the cars in our club. I’m plan-ning to get both of my cars there and I would strongly en-courage members to support this great event – see the information contained in this EA. Last month I along with around 70 other entrants enjoyed the Busselton rally – congratulations to the or-ganisers, it was a fabulous event in a beautiful part of our state. I along with the Branch Chair Stuart took some wrong turns but it did not matter as it was a great day out. As I write the Restoration shed is nearing comple-tion, a wonderful addition to the preservation of vehicles in this state. This facility will include an improved wood-work facility, panel beating areas and hoist facilities. I expect it to be opening next month so keep your eyes open to come and be part of this exciting development. I hope that the year has started well for you all and I look forward to seeing you at one of our events soon (hopefully the Hyde Park display)

Classic Car Show Sun 18th March 2018.Register now and save the date .

Ascot Race Course Belmont

It’s on again at the new location ,Ascot Race Course ,Belmont . Register now by contacting me on 93642474 or email me at [email protected] . This year they say they have streamlined the event to make it bigger and better than last year and there will be more food vans , entertainment and also a better sound system . Our Club , the VCCWA will be located in the same spot as last year …. in the south end of the grassed area of the car park .The Club’s Marquee will be set up with a large table for your convenience ,however, we ask you to BYO chairs …….Directions will be mailed to you with your passes... Gates open from 8.00 am. to 9.00 am …. Finish 4.00 pm. (.no pass ,no entry )

Last year I was allocated 70 passes and I handed out those 70 passes. Then I had to turn people away. However for some reason 11 cars failed to turn up .I really could have used those passes ! .If you take a pass please make the effort to attend the show or let me know ahead of time as I may then reallocate the passes.

This is a great fun day to show off your “pride and joy” (no, not your wife ) ,with lots of cars and club dis-plays to see . It’s shaping up to be better than last year. You are welcome to BYO food and drinks. Our club will be suppling cold water and I understand that there will be a variety of food outlets available on the ground for your convenience. This is your Car Club…….. so please support it .

A late afternoon run on Sunday January 21st to Denmark for fish and chips on the river bank was enjoyed by a small group of

nine members. For those that went, it proved to be a re-laxing and different conclusion to a busy weekend. It was pleasing to see the number of young local family groups entertaining themselves in the park, many of whom also took time out to enjoy their evening meal outdoors.

A couple of events held earlier in the month will be history by now – the Cars and Coffee at Robinson on February 10th and the Gnowangerup Fair on February 17th- and then there is the shed open day and busy bee at the club on Saturday February 24th. If you have some time to spare, your effort to attend to some of the outstanding mainte-nance items will be appreciated.

On Saturday March 3rd, the Mount Barker Police Station Museum will hold a centenary celebration and have asked for several of our cars relevant to the era to be involved. Members are welcome to take their cars for a drive to Mount Barker on the day even though they may not be part of the exhibition.

A modified version of the entry form for the Albany Easter Rally is included for members who intend participating in

this year’s event. If you have used the earlier version for your application, there is no need to re-submit. The main difference is the inclusion of details for the vehicle display on the Saturday morning which is more for your informa-tion than anything else. As advised previously, our usual venue is no longer available so Jenny Sinclair and Newton Powell have made arrangements to secure the use of the car park adjacent to the Albany Entertainment Centre on Princess Royal Drive. There is ample bitumen hardstand for parking and the location is in close proximity to cafés, coffee shops and the foreshore which makes it an ideal and convenient setting. The town centre is also easily ac-cessed using the overpass footbridge for those who want to venture further afield. You should now be thinking to confirm your entry and book accommodation to ensure you get your preferred lodgings.

The next event to look forward to is the Cranbrook Show on Saturday March 24th. This is an excellent example of locals banding together to provide a community event where everyone is welcome. If you haven’t been before you should make the effort as you can be guaranteed a really good day’s entertainment and it’s a chance to take the car for a longer drive into the country. You will be pleased to know there is no entry fee – so let’s get out there and give them plenty of cars to look over.

That’s about it for this month.

IT’S ON AGAIN!PILGRIMAGE TO PERKOLILLI IN 2019

After vowing “never again” to run another Lake Perkolilli Festival of Speed and then being asked constantly about when we’ll be heading to the claypan again, we have decided to partner with vintage motorcycle enthusi-asts Greg Eastwood and Nic Montagu to have another pil-grimage to Perko. So pencil in these dates: 12 to 15 September 2019. Yes, that is 2019 which gives you enough time to make a Perko racer if you don’t have one already. The format will be the same as the successful/unsuccessful (depends how you like at it) 2014 Centenary of Speed which was held before the Veteran Rally. There will be a couple of days of track testing to whip up the dust and then a two day festival of events. For those who remember the weather back in 2014, the Festival of Speed is scheduled for September so that we can hopefully avoid the electrical storms, rain and gen-eral mayhem of October 2014 which has recurred every year since. September looks like a better month if recent years are anything to go by - slightly less rain, humidity and heat. The ingredients which made the 2014 event so good will be made even better. Mick Rust has committed to a new and bigger Kalgoorlie Motor Works workshops and car fixing set-up on the clay pan. The Oxwells have com-mitted to providing their expertise to work our way through the competition side of things. Already, many stalwarts of Perkos past have said they’ll be bringing cars and supporting the event. In the first hour after it was decided to go again there were al-ready nine cars pledged to make it to the claypan. The event is open to pre-war cars and immediate post-war cars by invitation if they look like pre-war models (MG TCs and the like). The spirit of Lake Perkolilli was stripped-for-racing road cars and rustic specials but all pre-war cars are welcome. It’s not for Pebble Beach con-course cars which can’t get off the beaten track but if you want to camp in the bush, get you and your car covered in dust and have a hell of a lot of fun then Perko is the place. We’ll have more news as things take shape.Take a look at the book Red Dust Racers,

www.motoringpast.com.au for inspiration on the cars and bikes of Perkolilli. The Parts Shed has a heap of chassis which would make ideal speedsters for Perkolilli. Perko is not about the fastest or flashiest car but it’s all about hav-ing fun and re-living the great days when smoke, small and clatter combined with red dust in the outback.

Graeme Cocks

Ted Mumme from Darwin built his Ford T Speedster for the last Perko event in 2014 and trailered it down from the NT.

Rod Vogel’s superb Chevrolet Speedster made its debut at Perko in 2014.

York Motor Museum Update As reported in last month’s Early Auto, York Motor

Museum has been purchased by a regional community group, the Avon Valley Motor Museum Association. Mem-bers are from York, Northam and Toodyay. The $625,000 purchase was made possible by a Royalties for Regions grant of $200,000, Shire of York providing $18,000 per year for three years and a Bendigo Bank grant of $10,000.

There has also been great community support with individual donations of up to $10,000 being received. Museum income and continued community support will pay the loan balance over the next few years.

Museum founder Peter Briggs will leave his vehi-cle collection in place for the foreseeable future. In addi-tion, negotiations to house part of the Markham collection in York are well under way.

Since taking over Museum operations on 21st. December, opening times have been extended two hours, and the Motor Museum is now open every day from 9am. to 4 pm. This has resulted in greater visitor numbers for the first month’s operation under AVMMA . We have an increase of over 50% for the same period last year, Mu-seum Manager John Bullock reported. Numbers have risen from 560 to 869.

VCC members are encouraged to visit York Motor Museum to see the recent improvements made, due to the hard work of former curator Graeme Cocks, and the fur-ther innovations being put in place by the new owners!

Future plans include offering visiting car clubs an overnight package in York, which includes a social func-tion at the Motor Museum. John would welcome any ideas in this regard. Please contact him on [email protected]

Busselton Briefs

As you would have all previ-ously read in these notes, our annual January Rally was held over the Australia Day week-end. We had over 70 nominations, (another great result), and we managed to organise a perfect day for the rally. Not too hot and not too cold. Entrants met at our club rooms and our parking attendants man-aged to squeeze most of the cars in to our parking area. With the brief-ing over, cars made their way to the starting blocks in an orderly fashion. It was a very pleasant drive out and eventually we made our way to Wonky Windmill farm for a morning tea break. From there we trav-elled back to the club rooms for lunch. A very pleasant drive and some interesting scenery were enjoyed by all who made the distance. There was also a cryptic quiz to complete over the sections where you weren’t required to look for clues. John Hume had the most correct answers for this quiz. 1st entry received was won by Alan Griffiths. In the Veteran and Vintage section, Winners were Kevin Cochrane (right with co-rally director Russell Chinnery) and Navigator Jacob Coch-rane. Second place went to Glen and Lyn Johnson and Third to Ken and Bev Harrington. In the most nominated section of post vintage it was split into two groups, 1930 to 1960 group was won by Ron Hollands with Brian Hehir (seen at right) as navigator. Second place went to Darren Hunter and navi-gator and third went to Graeme and Chris Rowe. In the 1961 to 1993 group the winners were Mitch and Jo Craig. Second place went to Rob Van Leeu-win with J Van Leeuwin as navigator and third went to Robert and Jean Cook. In the Modern/invitation section the winner was Gay McGregor. The Motorcycle section was won by Peter Whiteside.

The outright winner of the rally was Mitch and Jo Craig. (left with co-rally director Tony Griffiths) The Best local was presented with the J J Archibald trophy and was won by Rob and J Van Leeuwin. Congratulations to all winners and also to all participants for the enthu-siasm and joviality shown during the

weekend’s events. The show and shine held on Sunday was well at-tended and viewed by many of the visitors and locals in Busselton and many positive comments were expressed. See photos.

Club President Tony Hume (right with Busselton chair-man Stuart Pearson) also thanked all involved in the Rally and re-minded all that this year is the 60th

year of the VCC of W.A. Our rally directors, Tony

and Helen Griffiths and Russell and Joy Chinnery thanked every-

one for their attendance and especially thanked all the helpers who manned check points, parking attendants and breakdown trailer driver. They also thanked everyone involved with the meet and greet on Friday night, the dinner on Saturday night and the morning tea on Sunday morning.

Our cruise ship visit scheduled for the 27th was unable to unload due to inclement weather, but we have plenty more visits to show our cars to coming up.

We welcome new members to our branch. Lloyd Bickerton from Eaton, Mike Pedritti from Stratham, Scott Baney from Margaret River and Gregory Smith from Busselton. We hope to see you at more meetings and join us on our monthly runs. If meetings are not your thing then just join us at about 10.30am on the second Sunday and enjoy a cuppa and hopefully a run to somewhere close for lunch. You are also welcome to join our mid-week runs and of course any event mentioned in our events calendar.

Congratulations also go to two of our members for receiving awards on Austra-lia day. Beryl Sutton was the recipient of the award for Citizen of the Year for Busselton and Neville Tanner (right) was awarded Citi-zen of the Year in Nannup. Congratulations to both of you. COMING EVENTS 21st is a visit to Ellenvale aged care facility. Names to Bails please. 10am to noon. 24th is another cruise ship visit. The M V Europa will call in to Busselton. 9.00 am at the club rooms. 1st March is our mid-week run. Meet at Ro-tary Park for 9.30 departure. 4th march is the Metricup Ute muster at the Beer Farm. 11th is our next general meeting. 11th is also a display at the Busselton butter factory museum for their major open day. 10/11th is the Indian Harley club annual two day rally. 14th March is our annual visit to William Carey Court. 9.30am to 11.30am. 21st is the next cruise ship. The Golden Princess is on a 13 day journey so passengers will need a stretch of their legs by Busselton.

Cheers until next month. Bails.

Hello once again from the Peel Branch

January is usually a quiet month for us as the weather is normally too hot. This month however has been just the opposite with much happening On a

very sad note around 15 cars and members farewelled much love member Bernie Robinson. Bernie passed away New Years eve and his funeral was on Saturday January 6th He and his big Plymouth Belvedere will certainly be missed on our outings. Sincere condo-lences to Helen and family.

Now for our only planned run for the month on the 11th and this was a Breakfast Run at a park in Aus-tin Grove. Forty Six people turned up for a pancake breakfast The local Maccas lost out big time The opin-ion of the brekkie revellers is that we should do runs like this more often. I missed out as I was greeting visitors from the U.S.A.

January 14th saw a group of us travel to Yar-loop to lend our support for the local Fire Fighting Service. The very hot 40 deg day put a damper on our enthusiasm. Actually the day was very similar to the day the town was raised 2 years ago. Hot, low humid-ity and north easterly winds. I chatted to a couple of old school mate that still live in the area and they say that there is a slow recovery taking place with several new homes being constructed

Sunday 21st was our meeting with a healthy attendance and 3 more new members.

On Australia day a convoy of 6 cars travelled to Busselton to join in their fantastic Rally.

Kerry and I arrived earlier as we were already in Australind. The comradery of the Busselton Branch is absolute tops, The Dinner and the venue were great and a huge thankyou to Tony and Helen Griffiths for a top Rally. As Arnold Swatchhimsniger would say “We will be back”.

Our next run is the Valentines Day Run. More on this next month.

On February 28th we are having a morning tea run to Secret Harbour Golf Course. Meet at Golden Bay 9.30 am for a 9.45 am departure.

There has been no request as yet from the or-ganisers of Crab Fest as to whether they require cars for a display.

March 18th Peel Branch Meeting Golden Bay Club Rooms.

March 25th Dennis McGavigan is organising a short overnight run that will suit older and slower cars. The plan is to meet at Ravenswood at 9.00am for a 9.30 start travel to Waroona for morning tea (BYO) Then on to Australind for lunch. After lunch make your way up to Preston Beach where it is planned to stay at Footprints Resort for the night For those wish-ing to stay Footprints Phone # is 97391111 and the lady to ask for is Bridgett

Bill Brown is planning on travelling to Albany for the Easter Rally on the March 31st. Anyone wish-ing to join Bill please call him on 95378051 or 0428376650

Take care, stay safe

Warren Blackwood’s

Doings There was no meeting of the Warren District Car Club in January due to the large num-ber of members who ran away to sea. Twenty one of us had signed on for a cruise from Fremantle to Albany and return over four nights from January 21st to 24th. The MV Astor is a pretty ship and is obviously well looked after judging from the acres of gleaming varnish and clean white paint. Despite some heavy weather from time to time everyone enjoyed themselves immensely after finding their sea legs. So we all relaxed into a routine of eating, drinking, a little light exercise and plenty of enter-tainment that included a visit to the Bridge for an interest-ing chat with the captain.

Coming Events:

Saturday 17th February The February Monthly Meeting will be held at Boyup Brook Country Music Festival. Anyone wishing to take part in the

annual Ute and Truck muster (cars are included) please be at the event by 09:00 to register at the Old Railway Station. After the parade we will meet for lunch, BYO everything, at approx. 13:00 at the Rotunda in Sandakan Park, opposite the Museum. After lunch we will hold the February monthly meeting at approx. 14:00.

Sunday 4th March: The Augusta River Festival, would like cars to display at this event, cars need to be on display from 08:00 until 15:00, to book your spot contact David Savage on 9777 2903 or 0487802768.

Saturday 24th March: Brookton Old Time Motor Show with this year's theme Best of British for more info enter the following in your browser: http://www.otms.org.au/

Those proposing to go, names and numbers please to Alan Duns at the next meeting, there will be camping available overnight but we will need to book space as Alan Roberts is proposing to incorporate it into the next Truck Trek.

Donnybrook Branch had a great day out providing lots of enjoyment to the resi-dents of Tuia Lodge in January. By all accounts the members enjoyed the day out as much as the residents.

DONNYBROOK DRIVINGS

For Donnybrook branch, December and early January were rather quiet months. However, On Thursday 11th January, Tuia Lodge, Donnybrook’s Aged Care Lodge had a visit from we, the Donnybrook branch. Whilst the weather threatened us, luckily it changed to sunshine just before the proceeding commenced. Morning tea was served outside in the gardens and with many classic and vintage cars on show. The oldest dating back to 1924. Residents were treated to morning tea supplied by our branch ladies, offering a variety of homemade cakes, scones and these were served with tea or coffee. A free raffle took place with several prizes being offered and chocolates for those unfortunate not to win. Club members wheeled those in wheel chairs to get a closer look at the vehicles and offered information and answered questions that were raised. One member had his 1972 Jawa bike on display, this created much interest to some of the bike enthusiasts. The residents showed much interest in our vehicles, some men-tioned that their parents, relatives and some owned similar mod-els themselves. One lady took a liking to the Austin 7, apparently, she spent time courting in the same vehicle in her youth. Another person could

remember her family owning a 1924 Chev ute, the same as on display. Their vehicle was used on the family farm in Lowden. It proved to be an interesting event and was well received by the staff and residents. Julie Arnold, Occupational Therapist, thanked chairman, Doug Bishop and club members on an excit-ing and successful visit before taking up her position in the driver’s seat of a 1969 red MGB sports car and she really looked the part.

The Donnybrook Branch meets on the first Sunday of each month at the St John Ambulance Centre, Bentley Street, Donny-brook commencing at 10am sharp.

Upcoming events for the Donnybrook branch are: Sunday, 4th March, 2018: After March’s meeting and morning tea, members will visit an interesting place “Vintage Steel where Andrew will guide members around his foundry and his large collection of vintage bikes. Saturday, 31st March,2018: Donnybrook’s Apple Festival: This event is over two days and our vehicles, bikes and vintage trac-tors will be on display over the two days and will be entering into the street parade. Sunday,1st April,2018: Our vehicles will be on show again for the day.

My thanks to Chairman Doug Bishop for supplying the write up referring to the visit to Tuia Lodge and to Keith Bell who loves photography and took these photographs. Make sure you drive safe.

It’s happened, another year has crept up on us. They seem to be going quicker as we get older and I have a job keeping up with it as I’m sure do others. We didn’t have a verdict last month because I omitted to send it in, I wrote a

small account placed in my documents file and subsequently for-got it. Sorry about that. So, we had a lovely mid- week run in December organised as usual by our intrepid leader Lloyd. We all enjoy these events and this run to Harvey was no exception. Thanks Lloyd, keep up the good work. The Vintage Section Christmas party was a great success, good food and good company, it’s nice to be involved with a group of like- minded people who all get on with each other, even though some of us are a bit strange at times. Once again the Pyjama Run was held at Tomato Lake and as always we all had a great time, there was a variety of vehicles from veteran, vintage and post vintage on display. A lot of interest was shown not only by our own members but also by the public. This venue is always busy with families enjoying themselves and it’s nice to show off our vehicles . There is good shade, good BBQ facilities and a lovely café if you need to buy a big breakfast as I did. I’ll be there next year that’s for sure. The Northam Swap meet is coming up on the 18th Feb I think (better check that date) I mention this because whilst not a Vintage event, when I go up there I always meet loads of our members all foraging around for something to bring home. It’s a good run anyway, any excuse to get a car out! Hyde Park is looming. We want a lot of cars for display so get the garage doors open, especially those we haven’t seen for a while. We always have a good time there and the day seems to go very quickly because we are all chatting and telling lies to each other, not really but you can if you like. The other event is of course the Autumn Rally, this is on the 11th march, organised by Maurice and Rose. Make sure that you put your entry form in and come along for a great day out.

I thought I would just mention how lucky we are to have such a fine venue for our club, as you might know Maxine and I are also members of the MGCC of WA whose clubrooms are in Bayswater, it’s a great club but their facilities are a lot smaller than ours, we really do have reason to be proud of our situation and the effort put in by all the helpers, our facilities here are sec-ond to none.

Meanwhile keep those old wheels turning and how about a few stories to help me out with the Verdict.

Many years ago a friend worked in Es-perance for about three months and spied a Suzuki van, off white in colour. Years later he decided that a collection would satisfy his needs, this has now turned into a fetish or a hobby, finding, buying and repairing the older unique types of Zooks that have been manu-factured. I have seen this Zook van when surveying in Esperance in the 1980’s, but where it has gone is a mys-tery.

On speaking with some long term members of the VCC Esperance produced little results. A ray of hope arose, Norm Hanks had seen two zooks at a clearing auction on a farm east of Esperance.

Now the Chinese whispers be-gan, one was a white one and the other was a ute – both were configured as wagons, one yellow and one was dark green. More whispers. They apparently were not initially sold at the auction, but were placed with another lot, a tractor

and sold. Somehow the play was misread. With this state of play, it appeared they were not sold and had been removed from site. Tracking (Sherlock), the new property owner finally dis-covered the “Zooks were actu-

ally sold and removed from site. As the tractor was the only item required, they were on sold for a carton or two. Somehow I got involved in locating the Zook van. There are no Zook vans in the Suzuki livery and van arrangements were an after market product. Many phone calls later I caught up with the new location of the two sold vehicles.

On a trip to Esperance for the 2017 rally, Garth and Kevin went on a wild goose chase to the last known lo-cation of these cars. We finally located these cars on the route back to Esper-ance. Eagle Eye (as he was duly named in an article May 2017) saw them from the road, so a closer inspec-tion was required. The guard dog licked me to death (nearly), the two young men were friendly and didn’t lick.

On inspection, one was a four cylinder LJ50, Tojo motor and the other was a LJ50 with a three

cylinder two stroke, rust, more rust and paint over the rusty metal, but not the vehicle I was looking for. A video was produced of the three cylinder car driv-ing thru bush, but we couldn’t start the two stroke. After talking to my mate, the cars were purchased for a princely sum of two hundred dollars Australian.

The Zooks were then loaded onto the trailer that carries my Stude-baker and transported back to our hum-ble abode in Esperance waiting for re-moval to Coolgardie. They posed on the front lawn as rustic garden art until they were collected. The woman in my life was happy to indicate that they were rubbish and had no idea that one’s junk is another’s treasure. A Fri-day in early May I was told to be ready to go to Esperance and would be picked up at five am. As I'm a night owl, an alarm at that hour was to me horren-dous. Sook.

The vehicles were transported back to Coolgardie and will be used as parts for his Zook refurbing collection. The trip was in a F250 7.3 litre diesel towing a 9 metre trailer, in comfort and ease of towing ability. We were back in Kalgoorlie about 3.00 pm. The photos show what the salty environment in the coastal area can do to an exposed ve-hicle. What metal is left is in very poor condition.

I have to go again, but it will be what someone requires. Apparently another Zook has been spotted, but cooler weather is needed for Ked. Until we find another,

Motoring Memories - Yesteryear Brought Back to Life

by A John Parker “RAC Year Books & Road Guides 1909-1927” -

Because State authorities are always reticent to release data from ‘our’ records of Perth-WA’s vehicle registrations, there is a need to put them into the ‘public domain’ as an on-line facility. It is now 100 years since these began, so they are beyond restrictions of copyright. No car owners have survived that long - so we can examine them without meddling in descendant-family lives. The Australian Automobile Club of WA came into being in 1905, changing its name (by Royal Charter) to the Royal Automo-bile Club of WA in 1922. Records began in1905 BUT only of the members’ names and vehicles. In 1913, addresses/regos/brand/year/type/horsepower were added. Records run from 1905-1927 (when the RAC stopped publishing booklets). Compilers relied on city and rural councils to provide lists of people, vehicles, etc, etc. The WA State Records Office holds some of the ‘between au-thorities’ correspondence but that collection is far from complete. The RAC of WA holds some of its own original booklets; and some are in the WA State Library (SLWA); the VCC of WA library has a few, and private collectors have some - so Andrew Bowman-Bright of the ‘Carnamah Historical Society & Museum’ and volunteers are putting them on line. See “Early WA Motor Vehicle Registrations” at www.vehicleregistrations.com.au A Broad Summary of the Extant Collection of RAC Year Books & Road Guides - 1905-1913 - Annual Reports - only have members’ names (including some early Perth dealers); 1913 - was the year that surnames/residential address/brand/type/rego numbers were first listed; 1914-1927 - most member details were recorded in municipalities A-Z for Perth and rural WA; The RAC of WA increasingly became focused on mapping rural WA roads. And J L Burton put out at least one booklet called “Road Guide and Maps” for 1916-1917 (published by W E Hale). Readers: be aware that these new, on-line, RAC registra-tion records - 1. Were never, originally, intended to contain the exacting details that we researchers are asked for over the phone these days! The world was a LOT, LOT less complicated then; 2. No one really seems quite sure whether these RAC booklets list ONLY the RAC members, or if they contain ALL registered Perth-WA owners and their vehicles in a specific period; 3. Current work to place these records on line is being done by VOLUNTEERS - please do not ask miracles of them. They can only process and enter what they have been handed! 4. NO GUARANTEES - after years of trying, we have OFTEN not found that a rego car number matches the ownership (as the fam-ily recalls it) or is even recorded in any of these books! 5. We restorers have no right to harass people for details of their ancestors’ cars! For myself, I write a letter to them - if they reply, this lets descendants off the hook of having to deal with us face to face. Yes, privacy is a ‘concern’ but should never become an ‘issue.’ 6. IF you have any ORIGINALS of these RAC books PLEASE

contact A John Parker or Andrew Bowman-Bright (at [email protected]) so we can arrange to borrow yours;

Welcome back after the Christmas/ New Year Break to a new and exciting year in 2018 with lots of activities and adventures planned. Our last meeting saw 32 members in attendance a few down on previous meets but still good numbers just the same. The ladies brought a salad to go with the BBQ tea which followed the meeting. Very enjoyable. We had a very successful busy bee with 20 members and visitors in attendance to complete little jobs that have been happening at the club which is looking fantastic and the kerbing is now complete which makes it look even better. Scones with jam and cream and muffins were enjoyed by all with their cuppa. Australia day: We had 34 cars on display at adventure land park, including 2 model T’s from Perth which was a nice addition to our display with Kevin Rollond and Graham Mckenzie’s model T’s. It was a great turnout considering Paddy was out of town who would normally display 5 cars and “Danksy” now in Donnybrook we also miss his 6 cars at our display, it was nice to have Colin and Robyn here for the weekend. After the display was over we adjourned back to the club for a sausage sizzle. We also acquired one new member.

On Saturday some members joined with the model T’s for a run through town and then out to Twilight to see the beautiful beaches and then back to a friends’ place for a cuppa.

In April our club will be attending the “HOLT ROCK HOEDOWN” a weekend of country music singing and danc-ing. Leaving Esperance in our Vintage cars to travel to Hope-toun, Lake King and to Holt Rock arriving on 12th April. (There will be some moderns coming as well) Any other clubs interested in coming along will be most welcome, would be great to meet up with others. All money raised from this weekend is donated to charity.

1st April: EASTER SUNDAY is “THE OUTA SHED DAY” which attracts the best display of cars you ever wish to see. This is run by a group of young car enthusiasts. All

money raised is donated to differ-ent charity groups.) It is held on the local hockey fields and PLEASE check the Early Auto for more information on this event. Eventually we hope to hold it at the VCC in Esper-ance. Until next time Cheers Merl
