President’s
Message:
Mary and I enjoyed
being invited to a
Solar Eclipse 2017
party but, we heard
that Mike and Steph
traveled to see it at
―ground zero.‖
Thanks to the Ryan
family for another
great Ryan Ramble
to Pt. Reyes and to Frank Squire and fellow members
for their educational outreach at the SIRS luncheon.
Kudos should also go to Ed Rose and the Keystone
Cops for giving Model T driving lessons and thanks
again for Ed’s ―T‖ presentation in May at Bolt’s
Museum.
The McGregors and Hrens will represent NCRG as
celebrities with Nash entries at the upcoming
Ironstone Concours, which will feature 100 years of
the Nash Automobile. Mike and Stephanie’s
Plymouth, CA Vintage Camp Trailers Tour and
Pharis’ Ladies Tea and Gentleman’s Drive should be
fun events. Also, Roger Mitchell is hosting another
enjoyable evening to benefit the Rio Linda Fire
Truck #2 restoration in October.
Now that we survived the Solar Eclipse, let’s get
those old ―Motors‖ back on the road!

Editor’s Message:
God bless Texas and Louisiana.
For those of you with family and
friends in those flood and
tornado ravaged areas, we pray
for their safety. The devastation
is horrible.
I received several nice comments about the
McGregor’s 1908 Rambler story in last month’s
newsletter. It was definitely an interesting story
about the former owners of their Rambler and seeing
photos as well. Well done, McGregors!
You will be seeing some stories about NCRG tours
and other fun stuff in A Blast from the Past that
were published in the HCC of Nevada’s Steering
Column that Stan Nicolaus shared with me. Thank
you, Stan!!!
Thank you Milt Webb for the photo disk of the 2017
Ryan Ramble. The disk will be added to our media
library for preserving the history of the NCRG.

VINTAGE JOHN DEERE TRACTORS
By: Sue Hill
On Saturday, August 19, I rode with Bob and Helen
Hopkins to Oroville to see the Bolt’s Antique Tool
Museum’s presentation on vintage John Deere
tractors. Mary and Garry Gunderson and Jim
Matson and Amy Williamson from the NCRG were
also in attendance. Rod Hiskin and Dax
Kimmelshue were the presenters and shared some
fantastic old tractors. You know how excited we get
when we get an old car that looks like it should be
tossed rather than restored, but sink time, sweat
equity and money into it and are elated when it is all
done and saved from the brink? Well, these tractor
guys are the same as us. They pull these old relics
out of toppled down barns, hunt for parts, share
knowledge and get the things restored. They are just
as elated at their accomplishments as we antique car
folks.
We got to learn the difference between a John Deere
―I‖ and an ―O‖. Have you ever seen a non-John
Deere green tractor? If you have, it was probably an
―I‖…Industrial. The counties and state road crews
could have them painted any color they wished...the
one we saw was painted orange. The John Deere
―O‖ is for Orchards.
The tractor that intrigued me the most was the one
with streamlined back fenders (below). It is an ―O‖
model. The fenders were built that way so when they
plowed between a row of trees, the tree limbs would
not get broken. You don’t think of this streamliner
as a fast machine...no farmer wants to go 50 mph
between a row of his/her precious trees...it goes nice
and easy at three mph.
One special thing about Rod Hiskin, a cancer
survivor, he created a Tractors for Humanity event.
He painted a tractor pink and sold tickets so people
could have a chance to win it and gave the proceeds
to the American Cancer Society as well as to a local
cancer organization. Since then, there have been
Tractors for Humanity painted in many hues to
benefit Autism, Veterans, etc. Talk about giving
back! His idea caught on in the John Deere group.
After the presentation the NCRGers headed to our
favorite buffet for lunch and chatter.

Toy replicas of all the tractors on display outside.
I recommend these presentations to everyone. I have
only given you a smidgen of what we learned about
these old farm tractors and highway maintenance
machines.
Note: I was particularly amused when Dax talked
about restoring “antique” cars such as a “Road
Runner” (Plymouth). After the presentation I
talked with Dax and shared my amusement of his
term “antique” and explained that the NCRG has
really “antique” cars such as a 1914 Mitchell
speedster and Bob mentioned his 1915 Hudson.
It’s all relative, they say, as Dax is a young guy and
an “antique” car to him would definitely be a 1960s
era “Road Runner.”
CAR SHOW CAPITOL FREE WILL BAPTIST CHURCH
August 20, 2017
While Leta Nichols was attending a family reunion
in Oklahoma, John was spending time viewing the
cars and tractors at the Capitol Free Will Baptist
Church car show in North Highlands. While there,
he spotted Warren and Donna Berg and snapped
their photo and posted it on Facebook.
In addition to old cars, Warren and Donna Berg have a
nice old original condition tractor that he demonstrates
on Farm Days in Rio Linda in May of each year.
FORDSON TRACTOR
By Sue Hill
While at the John Deere presentation, we were
reminded that in the early days, tractors had steel
wheels which after a while would rust. Plus they did
not give good traction. Pneumatic tires were finally
made which gave the tractors a much better pull in
the fields and orchards.
When the Hopkins family first moved to California
we had a one-acre parcel
with home and almond
orchard. Bob Sr. bought an
old Fordson with metal
wheels similar to the one
pictured so we could plow
the orchard. Dad would
start it up so my brother could do the plowing. It had
a crank start as does the one in the photo.

A Blast from the Past From the HCC of Reno’s Steering Column, April 1955
SACRAMENTO’S STATELINE STAMPEDE
The Northern California Regional Group invaded
Nevada on March 15th, when more than 40 members
made a tour by chartered bus to Stateline, Nevada for
an evening of fun at the Lake Tahoe resort area.
Although none of the group drove an antique car, all
brought the genial Horseless Carriage camaraderie
along with them and although their bus did not arrive
at Stateline until nearly midnight, everyone enjoyed
this stampede excursion.
The weather, which had been ideal for the preceding
week, suddenly changed for the worse during the
afternoon of March 15th, and a moderately heavy
snowstorm greeted these stampeeders as they entered
mountain territory.
Near the top of Echo Summit they were delayed for
more than an hour when a snowplow sideswiped
another bus, blocking the highway. The temperature
being somewhat below the level to which these
hardy characters are accustomed, was moderate
slightly by applications of mild anti-freeze and it is
reported that some of the more venturesome passed
the time with a snowball battle while the bus was
delayed.
A cocktail party and buffet luncheon awaited their
arrival at Stateline as did several welcoming
members of the Nevada Regional Group.
Immediately after their arrival all adjourned to the
South Shore Room of the Club as guests of Bill
Harrah.
A highlight of the occasion was the center-piece of
the dessert table; a lifelike antique automobile cake,
edible in every little detail, even to the gas lights and
bulb horn.
Throughout the early morning hours, it continued to
snow but no one minded much. There was more
excitement inside as the machines were attacked by
this visiting group.
Those members of our neighboring California group
who made this trip were: Wendell Binning, Andy
and Connie Biondo, Ed and Bernice Catlett,
Sylvia Davies and Edith Reid, Joe and Josephine
Ellis, Robert and Anne Hopkins, Art and Prue
Kallgren, Gene and Vi Largin, Archie and Jon
McCalla, Burl and Marge McCormick, Wayne
Nickel, Larry and Bernice Ocheltree, Marion and
Pearl Ocheltree, Herb and Cora Showalter,
Gordon and Sylvia Soderman, John and Tillie
Taylor, Shorty and Nita Tompkins, Gwynne and
Elma Vanciel, Otto and Jean Van Gorder, Henry
and Isabelle Vogt, Dean and Gladys Walden and
Betty Aventi.
From Reno the following members of the Nevada
Regional Group were present: Lee and Van
Jellison, Donna Parke, Bill and Scherry Harrah,
Wes and Helen Clark, Al and Dorothy Nisbett,
Sam and Anne DeBolt, Bob Ring and Lee
DeLauer.

HATS FOR SALE
What a charming illustration of a hat shop back in the day. Note the hobble era skirts as well as
the hat pin holder on the display table filled with a few hatpins. The hat styles then (ca 1915-
1920) were becoming smaller rather than the very large hats of the very early 1900s. Very chic!

Bolt’s Antique Tool Museum Presents: “The Biking Bolts”
Not many people know that in addition to tools, the Bolt family embraced a passion for long-distance motorcycling throughout several decades. This photo shows Bud and Laila on their 1969 Harley Davidson Electra Glide on one of their three trips across the country. Before the internet, this was probably a viable method of “tool hunting” as well! This month, Alex Bolt, (grandson of museum founders Bud and Laila Bolt) will present a collection of photos and anecdotes from his family’s many motorcycle adventures all around the U.S. Their sons, Mike, Steven and David are cycle enthusiasts as well; with Steven’s trip to New York and back and Mike touring the Mississippi River to Baton Rouge to Texas, Las Vegas and back to Reno, Nevada. If you have a motorcycle, ride it to the museum for all to enjoy!
