In 2014/15 there was more to see, hear and do at Melbourne Recital Centre than ever before - 524 events – the most ever –attracted a total audience of 165,540, including over 12,000 children and young people participating in education programming.

The Centre hosted performances by 375 Australian ensembles and 102 international groups. The Centre also initiated its first programs outside the venue through a pilot project with three partners in the aged care sector and music presenters in outer metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.

We could not deliver these inspiring and enriching opportunities to engage with quality music to so many people without the transformational role of ‘giving’by our community of over 5,000 donors, including 223 special patrons of the Leadership Circles, Music Circle and Elisabeth Murdoch Creative Development Fund, Legal Friends and Share the Music.

You have had an immediate impact on the Centre’s capacity to deliver innovative projects across all its program pillars.

Special highlights in 2014/15 were the launch of Melbourne Recital Centre’s Legal Friends Group in October 2014, new leadership gifts to support Great Performers, Local Heroes and the Centre’s Children’s and Family programming as well as a substantial boost for the Centre’s Share the Music program from donors at every level.

Philanthropy now represents 12% of the Centre’s annual income, up from 7% just four years ago. It has enabled much of the growth in the Centre’s self-presented concert programming as well as its growing suite of artist development and accessibility activities.

LEADERSHIP CIRCLESThe Leadership Circles comprise individual donors whose LEAD gifts support the Centre’s eight program pillars - Artist Development, Children’s and Family Programming, Great Performers, Life-long Learning, Local Heroes, Master class, New Music and Contemporary Music.

The Centre’s Artist Development Program substantially expanded its engagement with talented students and emerging professionals in 2014/15. The Centre established ACCELERANDO, a fellowship for gifted secondary students in government schools, which supports their talents through extension activities such as workshops and concerts.

In 2015 the Centre was also delighted to introduce the 2014 Great Romantics Competition winner, Markiyan Melnychenko in an exciting Salon debut and continued its Spotlight Series for emerging ensembles that involved 35 artists in nine concerts.

In all over 200 young artists benefited from the Centre’s artist development initiatives this year.

New support of the Children’s & Family Leadership Circle enabled the Centre to continue its year-round programming for the very young, coupled with the annual January MusicPlayFestival. Donors to this program pillar lead the way for others to share in our vision to educate, inspire and entertain the next generation of music lovers. This was augmented by the Centre’s presentation of the SummerSalt Outdoor Arts Festival, which saw unprecedented collaboration between the Arts Precinct’s cultural organisations to activate the neighbourhood. It’s estimated that about 40% of SummerSalt visitors were families and 14% were visiting the Precinct for the first time.

GREAT PERFORMERS

LEADERSHIP CIRCLEGreat Performers, our flagship international recital series is a powerful demonstration of the skills of a global roster of master musicians, performing in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall’s superb acoustic. The young piano duo of Alice Sara Ott (Germany) and Francesco Tristano (Luxembourg), solo cellist Alisa Weilerstein (USA), pianists Nicolas Hodges(UK) and Jean-Efflam Bavouzet (France) astonished audiences with their virtuosity and passion in 2014. The 2015 Season has seen violinist Christian Tetzlaff (Germany) and pianists Louis Lortie (Canada), Paavali Jumppanen(Finland) and Nikolai Demidenko (Russia) present powerful solo recitals. In 2015 the Centre sold 25 per cent more Great Performers season ticket seats than in 2014.

This year, the ‘Learn’ section of the Centre’s website was launched to enable deeper engagement with music for all concert-goers. This new resource brings together a rich range of education resources including self-guided online tours of the Centre, listening guides, program notes, podcasts, YouTube interviews and printed resources appropriate to all ages, whether for individual, classroom or instrumental teaching and learning. In association with the 2015 Local Heroes series, a special collection of stories of World War I Heroes was commissioned to commemorate the Anzac Centenary. Written by historian Garry Hutchinson a collection of 80 personal stories and tales of Victorians who went to war, the doctors and nurses who cared for them, the families who waited at home, and those who migrated to Australia from Germany, Eastern Europe and Turkey are being shared throughout the year accompanied by learning resources alongside music of the wartime era played by local artists as part of the Local Heroes series.

LOCAL HEROES LEADERSHIP

CIRCLELocal Heroes is the Centre’s premier platform for Victorian and Australian ensembles. This year, it features over 30 ensembles presenting almost 80 concerts with the Centre in a unique, collaborative presentation model that ensures a vast array of Australian artists are presented on the Centre’s concert platform. In 2015, the fifth year of Local Heroes, the season commemorated the ANZAC Centenary by pairing each concert with the story of Victorian lives touched by World War I. The 80 stories of strength and courage have been shared online at melbournerecital.com.au/stories and by Local Heroes ensembles at their concerts.

MASTERCLASSLEADERSHIP

CIRCLESupporting the development of Australian artists is a key goal of Melbourne Recital Centre, with particular emphasis on providing opportunities for talented music students and emerging artists. These young musicians tell us that the opportunity to meet and learn from the international artists who come to Melbourne for the Centre’s Great Performers series and other major concert productions is invaluable to their professional and personal development. The audience members who attend suggest that master classes can often be more revelatory than concerts.

Master classes are outside the budget parameters of the Centre and can only be programmed as private funding is secured. Through the generosity of Masterclass Benefactors and Patrons we were able to present four master classes in 2014/15 involving 14 participants. These include pianists Nicolas Hodges, Nikolai Demidenko and Paavali Jumppanen, and the legendary vocalist Amanda McBroom.

This year, our annual collaboration with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for Metropolis New Music Festival, provided a showcase for works written for and inspired by the moving image. Immersive and captivating, the Festival’s stimulating and accessible program transported audiences with ground-breaking compositions. Multi-disciplinary ensemble Forest Collective united with local artists Rubik’s Collective to present two world premieres. The MSO presented the Australian premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood suite from the Academy Award-winning film which drew an audience of almost 1,000 people. In total, the Festival presented six world premieres and five Australian premieres in 2014/15.

SIGNATURE EVENTSThe Centre’s reputation for the excellence of its facilities and the diversity of its programming continues to grow internationally. Crucial to this positioning are Signature Events that showcase the Centre as a place for dynamic and exciting music-making in a space engineered to deliver the best experience for both audience and performer.

15HGHKBBV15In March 2015, French period instrument orchestra Les Arts Florissants conducted by William Christie returned to Australia after an

absence of over a decade. With a cast of singers from Le Jardin des Voix, a training academy for young vocalists, their performances garnered a five-star review in The Age, which said, “It doesn’t get any better” and earned two Helpmann Awards. The Centre aspires to continue to present the world’s major chamber orchestras and ensembles each year.

Providing support to projects that augment the Centre’s artist development and accessibility programs

Over the past year, the Elisabeth Murdoch Creative Development Fund has provided opportunities for over 200 young artists through competitions, master classes and other performance opportunities. With the support of donors who have committed to fund discrete projects over several years, the Centre now offers a range of artist development initiatives – and more recently, a renewed focus on access to enriched music experiences for many more members of our community.

The impact of this year’s gifts to the Fund was ably demonstrated at this year’s Gala Dinner by the superb musicianship of artists as varied as jazz songstress Clancye Milne and cellist Charlotte Miles. We were delighted that the evening raised in excess of $170,000 for the Fund, including a substantial boost the Centre’s MusicPlay children’s programming.

Bach Competition

Melbourne Recital Centre’s Bach Competition for talented music students up to the age of 18 explores Bach as the foundation stone of classical music training.

On Sunday 28 June 2015, ten talented young finalists took to the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall stage to compete for a $2000 cash prize donated by DrRichard Mills AM and an Encouragement Award valued at $1000 donated by Vivienne Ritchie. In an unprecedented development this year, two

winners – Lily Higson-Spence and Miles Johnston – each received a $2,000 cash first prize while Felix Star Higson Mc Brearty won a $1,000 Encouragement Award.

The inaugural Newsboys Foundation Regional Music Award, valued at $5,000 was presented to Charlotte Kube.

Great Romantics Competition

On Saturday 13 December 2014, eight talented young finalists, aged between 18 and 25 took the stage as part of the 2014 Great Romantics Competitionperforming a vibrant selection of works by great Romantic composers before a capacity audience and panel of judges.

Ukrainian-Australian violinist MarkiyanMelnychenko was awarded the 2014 Prize which included the $6,000 Elisabeth Murdoch Prize and a combination of career-enhancing performance and recording opportunities.

Pianist Aaron Liu was awarded The Kantor Award for his performance of Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No.12, S.244.

Through the commitment of the founding members of the group and support from other donors, the gifted British pianist Malcolm Martineau in partnership with the wonderful Austrian baritone Florian Boesch gave three unforgettable performances of Schubert’s great song cycles in early July 2015. The series was preceded by a special illustrated address on the famous song cycles by pianist, accompanist and vocal coach, Andrea Katz, and bass-baritone, Nicholas Dinopoulos, and hosted by Legal Friends Founding Members, Peter Murdoch QC and Helen Murdoch in Mt Macedon.

The Legal Friends collective gift was matched by a new Great Performers Benefactor and an innovative Australian Government program to match new and increased donations. This example of matched giving demonstrates an approach to philanthropy that increases the impact of individual donations to enable the Centre to achieve its ambitious aims.

Legal Friends of Melbourne Recital Centre includes members and associates of the legal profession who share a passion for music in particular the vocal arts who have come together to support the Centre’s concert program.

MUSIC CIRCLESupport from our Music Circle patrons impacts directly on the vitality and depth of the Centre’s artistic, education and outreach programs, allowing us to innovate, inspire and reach new audiences. Melbourne Recital Centre’s own program continues to demonstrate the quality that has made the venue a beacon to audiences as the best place to hear Australia’s most diverse range of music.

With streams dedicated to jazz, chamber music, international recitals, cabaret, children’s music, new music and contemporary pop and rock, the Centre’s own self-presented concerts generated 67,951 attendances and a gross box office of $2.8 million ensuring that the Centre continues to operate with a small annual surplus while achieving ambitious artistic goals.

SHARE THE MUSICThis program enables disadvantaged children and adults to attend concerts by providing tickets and transport free of charge. Over 1,000 of these visits take place each year through the generosity of our donors.

Share the Music, the Centre’s ongoing ticket and transport subsidy scheme, fully supported the attendance of more than 1,200 adults and children from a range of schools and community organizations at concerts and at tailored learning opportunities including backstage tours; meet the artist and Q&A sessions. For example, primary students developed their singing skills in dedicated Children’s Week workshops, and families, children and schools explored the Centre to learn about acoustics and design elements, with custom resources for MusicPlay and Education Week.

Share More Music initiated a pilot program with three aged care partners to take the Centre’s music to older adults unable to visit the Centre. Over 450 senior Victorians and 100 children participated in intergenerational activities as partof the Share More Music ‘in-resi’ programs, held at three facilities beyond the Centre. Ogham Soup celebrated St Patrick’s Day with the residents of Multicultural Aged Care Services, Geelong. The elders and family members of Emmy Monash Aged Care, together with students from Wooranna Park Primary School, enjoyed interactive concerts performed by renowned a cappella ensemble, Coco’s Lunch. Wesley St Mark’s in Chadstone provided a host venue for concerts by Cosmo Cosmolino. These concerts were attended by approximately 15 client groups of Wesley Mission Victoria.

In 2014/15 we extended the Centre’s concert program beyond the Southbank footprint. In addition to our education and outreach activities such as Share More Music, we worked with Yarra Ranges Council to curate and facilitate Classical Tracks, the Yarra Ranges Fine Music Program presented at four venues in the region. These included concerts by Local Heroes ensembles, Canadian pianist Angela Cheng and a recital by Markiyan Melnychenko, the winner of the 2014 Great Romantics Competition. We also established a partnership with the Mildura Arts Centre, where Great Performer PaavaliJumppanen gave a recital and masterclass. Through activities such as these within and beyond the venue, Melbourne Recital Centre is becoming an increasingly vital part of a thriving Victorian musical ecosystem.

ENCORE BEQUEST PROGRAMThe Encore Bequest program provides sustained support for all aspects of our core concert program, artist development and accessibility initiatives, through our Public Fund.

In mid-2014 the Centre was fortunate to receive a remarkable early birthday present from Barbara Blackman: a painting titled Fifty Flowers by her former husband Charles Blackman. At Barbara’s request, the painting hangs in the artists’ Green Room, a bouquet for every performer at the Centre to enjoy. On behalf of those performers, our heartfelt thanks for this generous andtouching gift.

Legacies of every kind have transforming impact on Melbourne Recital Centre. Financial donations to Melbourne Recital Centre’s Public Fund enable us to take bigger steps toward planning the future with confidence. Since it was established in 2008 by the Kantor and Calvert-Jones families to honour their mother and grandmother, Dame Elisabeth Murdoch AC DBE, the Centre’s endowment has grown to $6 million thanks to the donations and bequests of many individuals. To ensure the Centre can sustain its outreach, artist development and accessibility initiatives, as well as its rich and diverse self-presented concert program long term, we are focussed on building this endowment to $10 million by 2019 through one-off bequests and donations and using the income to fund annual artist and event costs.

As the Centre moves toward its 10th anniversary in 2019, it is our intention to pursue the Centre’s mission to inspire creativity, self-expression and learning through the presentation of the best artists from across Australia and around the world, to provide a world standard platform for Australian artists at all stages of their careers and to ensure the benefit is extended to all Victorians through associated accessibility, regional, children’s and young artist development programs.

We are now focussed on an expansive future where the benefits of music are shared even more widely –through a vibrant and diverse concert program, ambitious learning and outreach activities beyond the Centre including more regional engagement and international collaboration, and more programming in the digital space. At the same time the Centre continues to invest in projects that provide access to quality live music experiences for all and support a flourishing music sector.

In 2014-15, the Centre presented 60% of the over 500 concerts and events that took place. This now represents a $3.5 million annual investment in programming and marketing for transformative music experiences for people from all walks of life. This investment in artistic programming has grown by 40% over the past four years and continues to be supported entirely by ticket sales, philanthropy and sponsorship.

Philanthropy will help us maintain and grow our ambitious program as the Centre approaches its 10th anniversary in 2019.
