Celebrating 90 years since the Blessing

of the Cornerstone

This year at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower in San Antonio, we are celebrating 90 years since the blessing of the cornerstone, on October 15, 1929, the Feast Day of St. Teresa of Avila, the founder, with St. John of the Cross, of the Discalced Carmelite Order. The Shrine’s notable size, beauty, architectural character, and spiritual significance led to its placement on the National Register of Historic Places and elevation to the status of Minor Basilica in the Catholic Church, both in 1998. When it was designated a basilica, it was the only basilica outside of Lisieux, France, dedicated to St. Thérèse. The Basilica is a San Antonio landmark of great historic and spiritual significance.

Are you interested in learning more about Carmelite spirituali-ty? The Apostolate of the Little Flower is a nonprofit publication and ministry of the Discalced Carmelite Friars of San Antonio. Its purpose is to spread devotion to St. Thérèse of Lisieux, “The Little Flower.” Published quarterly and sent out to over 2,000 subscrib-ers, this publication includes articles from our friars on the spiritu-ality of St. Thérèse and the Discalced Carmelites. It also shares news from the Basilica and the Province of St. Thérèse. Subscription is free; donations are greatly appreciated to help with publication costs. Established as part of our first apostolate, The Little Flower Mag-azine, reached over 100,000 subscribers in 1923. Recognizing the great devotion of subscribers from all over the country, the friars took as their mission to spread devotion to Thérèse, to pre-pare for her canonization in 1925, and to build a national shrine in her honor. View our Spring 2019 Issue and previous Issues on the Basilica’s website, where you may also subscribe to receive the Summer 2019 Issue once it is released!
