cock County’s future. What a wonderful spirit it would be if everyone in Hancock gave some gift to one of these seven funds and flags were seen flying all across our county! Indeed, while these funds generate grants specifically for the benefit of Hancock County, there are yet another 183 funds that benefit hundreds of organizations and causes of the fund founder’s choice both at home and across the United States. All are open to accepting gifts and provide excellent vehicles for honoring or memorializing someone special.
Guided by the strong leadership of Mary Gibble, HCCF President and her dedicated and talented staff, 2009 marked numerous accomplish-ments for the Foundation, despite a fragile national and state economy. Over 250 grants, including more than 100 scholarships, were awarded throughout the county, totaling over $423,000. Twenty-five new funds were established including three new agency endowment funds nurtured
Give Where You Live, Grow Where You Live! Can you recall a favorite book or movie in which the setting for the tale made you want to live there, too? It’s that place where a variety of cultural, educational and recreational opportu-nities are available and where com-munity agencies abound to serve the varying needs of the residents. People welcome one another, help one an-other, cheer one another and care for one another.
Doesn’t this describe Hancock County? Indeed! The Hancock County Commu-nity Foundation is proud to recognize this community spirit with the new Spirit of Community Funds. Seven funds, each celebrating a unique
by the Pathlight Initiative. 2009 added 295 first time donors, including 30 new members to the Women’s Fund. Through the staff’s development of technolo-gy tools to enhance giving, online gifts increased 188% during the past year. These statistics are a reminder of the generous citizens of
this county who have chosen to give to Hancock County forever by making a gift to HCCF.
It is truly an honor and privilege to serve as chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Hancock County Com-munity Foundation. 21 caring indi-viduals representing all nine Hancock County townships volunteer their time, talents and spirit of community to guide and steward this Foundation.
Thanks to your generous support, and the support of your neighbors, friends and individuals across this county, the Hancock County Community Founda-tion continues to grow to enhance and enrich Hancock County for generations
to come. Ann Vail

aspect of the community, provide everyone with a way to strengthen Hancock County and the organizations that serve its people. Whether you want to encourage Lifelong Learning, sustain the county’s Agricultural Heri-tage or encourage Clean and Green, there is a Spirit of Community Fund ready to accept your gift of any value. Would you like to support Hancock County’s Arts & Culture or Community Vitality? A Spirit of Community Fund is available to accept your gift of $10 or $1,000 or more. In addition, a Hu-manitarian Fund supports many local agencies and the Hancock County Enrichment Fund is an unrestricted
fund designed to respond to emerging needs of the community. The Spirit of Community Funds are about enabling everyone to be a philanthropist. Perhaps you have seen the green and yellow county flag that has become the banner of the Spirit of Community Funds flying throughout the county. It’s our way of saying thank you for investing in Han-

T he Women’s Fund of Hancock County is Growing!!More women and girls are finding that the Women’s Fund of Hancock County is the perfect vehicle for giving. Why? …because the Women’s Fund is a giving circle! Giving circles are a form of philanthropy consisting of groups of individu-als who pool their resources to donate to their communities and seek to increase their awareness and engagement in the process of giving. It is a great opportu-nity for Hancock County women and girls, beginning at age 10, to be involved in strengthening our community with an annual financial commitment to the fund in any amount meaningful to them. Together, they are making a significant impact on vital programs serving women and families!
Grants made in 2009Following a vote by Fund members at the inaugural grantmaking event in May 2009, awards were presented. Two organizations received $5,000 grants: Boys and Girls Clubs of Hancock County – Jim Andrews Unit for their program, “SMART Girls”; and Children’s Bureau, Inc. for their program, “Commu-nity Partners for Child Safety Family Night.” $500 grants were made to Alternatives Incorporated for “Care 2 Get Connected,” and New Mercies Home, Inc., for their Teen Moms Support Group.

T he Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Scholarships
Each year since 1998, the Hancock County Community Foundation has had the honor of conducting the intense selection process of the Lilly Endowment Com-munity Scholars for Hancock County. These scholarships have been made avail-able to students across the state of Indiana due to the generosity of Lilly Endow-ment. The program provides scholarships for full tuition, required fees, and an allocation of up to $800 per year for required books and equipment. This scholarship is for four years of undergraduate study on a full-time basis leading to a baccalaureate degree at any Indiana public or private college or university accredited by the North Central Association of Col-leges and Schools.

Scholarship FundsIn 2009, the Hancock County Community Foundation awarded 109* scholarships with a combined value of over $186,000. Students who received the scholarships plan to study everything from music to auto mechanics, business to engineering. Some students would not have pursued educa-tion beyond high school without these important scholarships. The Foundation works closely with scholarship fund donors to create criteria which reflect their preferences in selecting scholar-ship recipients. Our thanks go to community members who have created these funds, which can be found on pages 7-9. A com-plete list and photos of the 2009 scholarship recipients can be found on our website at www.hccf.cc in the 2009 4th quarter newsletter.
