GLAA Board meetings are held the second Wednesday

bi-monthly in January,

March, May, July, Sep. and Nov., 9:00 to 11:00 am in the MCL Grand Educational Wing.

The meetings are open to the public.

Next meeting: July 10, 2013

In 1981, I was music director of First Presbyterian Church in Lewisville. R.L. and Brenda Crawford were among the regulars and R.L. was president of the Chamber of Commerce. He called me to state that the Chamber was interested in beginning some fine arts activity in Lewisville, and asked me to be on the planning committee. I gladly agreed and met with four other members – all women – at the Chamber office, then on Main Street near what was the First Baptist Church.

The chair was the incomparable Mary Webb. English teacher Kate Fite was also there, and I do not remember the other two. I agreed to be music sub-committee chair. After Mary’s term was over Marilyn Nelson took the reins. Sadly, both ladies are now deceased but their work lives on. Later R.L.. and Brenda Crawford both put in term as chair.

For those of us involved in the early effort, we could never have imagined the quantity and quality of arts offerings now available to Greater Lewisville residents.

As time marched on several arts groups emerged:

A community chorus was begun and continues with several annual concerts to

this day. Initially called “Musical Feast,” it is more recently named “Lewisville Civic Chorale.” The group of amateur singers brings a wide variety of choral music including standard selections and interesting new pieces.

Two ladies, Diana Coy and Sharon Davis, organized “Poco Mas” theater group. In spite of families and jobs they put in many hours during the formative years to produce some good plays. Having no permanent home, space was rented from schools and vacant buildings for these efforts.

The group has since morphed into “Greater Lewisville Community Theatre,” an excellent company of thespians widely respected in the metroplex. They now have their own home in Old Town.

The “Lewisville Lake Symphony” was begun, and Adron Ming became the first, only, and best conductor. The Symphony has made quite a mark in the area bringing outstanding music, giving employment to area free-lance musicians, and introducing some remarkable young artists.

The LakeCities Ballet brings in large crowds for the annual Christmas “Nutcracker.” In addition, the company

provides several other annual offerings and furnishes training for aspiring young dancers.

The “Visual Art League” has rotating exhibits in their MCL Grand Gallery. These exhibits by area artists are very much worth seeing, and the admission price is right – free!

Joe Ann Brooks is the guiding light behind “The Actors Conservatory Theatre.” The ACT uses boys and girls for their plays, giving training and love of theatrer to many youngsters, their parents, and the wider community.

In addition to these Lewisville groups, the GLAA serves as an information-sharing and support group for: “Lakeside Arts Foundation,” - The Colony “Studio B Performing Arts Center,” - Highland Village “The Colony Playhouse”

Wife Patsy and I are veteran goers to cultural arts events, but we are frequently bewildered. There are so many offerings by the GLAA constituent groups we find it difficult to choose. One night at the Grand there were actually four different events taking place!

GLCT continues to entertain and challenge its audiences as the second half of the 2012-2013 season unfolds. The winter production, Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, is a lovely, human comedy. It introduces us to retiree Lily Harrison and to Michael Minetti, the dance instructor she has hired for six weeks of private lessons. While practicing swing, tango, waltz, foxtrot, cha cha and contemporary dance, what started as a rocky relationship evolves into a trusting friendship of loyalty and compassion. Full of music and dance, this play also looks at ageism and intolerance in a gentle and insightful way. Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks is directed by Kenny Green who headed up The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife in 2010 and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 2011. Performances are weekends February 8-24. Next up on the boards is the very funny All the Great Books (Abridged). GLCT loyalists will remember when they laughed out loud at The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) back in 2010. Now veteran director Sharon Veselic will give us her take on the hilarious comedy April 26-May 12.

Greater Lewisville Community Theatre (www.glct.org)

It’s described with such “accolades” as “Little Dickens”, “Short Longfellow”, and “Reduced Proust”. It’s cheaper than a college course and certainly more fun! Theater-goers will enjoy three actors performing/running (sometimes literally) through more than 85 of literature’s “great” books in 90 minutes! The “abridged” series has been called the “new vaudeville” and likened to Monty Python in English class. Great Books is guaranteed to delight. The summer musical (June 28-July 21) is the classic rock opera, The Who’s Tommy. Watch for more on this high energy production, with a powerful and most memorable score, in the next newsletter. GLCT would like to thank the Varied Arts Club for its recent contribution. This group was started many years ago in Lewisville to give women an opportunity to learn more about art, music and literature. When the time seemed right for them to disband, they generously donated their organization’s remaining funds to GLCT and we are deeply grateful. If you would like to receive periodic updates on GLCT activities, sign up on our website to be added to the email list.

LBT recently presented Peter and the Wolf with the Lewisville Lake Symphony on March 3 for the community. With the assistance of Chip Waggoner from Fox 4 News, LBT dancers brought the music and this charming story to life for so many precious children who were enthralled as they learned about the instruments of an orchestra and the wonderful story-telling involved in classical ballet!

The highlight of our 29th season will be the full-length ballet, Coppélia, to be presented at the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater on April 26 at 7:30 pm, April 27 at 7:30 pm, and April 28 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $15 and may be purchased on our website, www.lakecitiesballet.org.

Coppélia is believed to be the daughter of the reclusive, eccentric toy-maker, Dr. Coppelius. She sits on her balcony, oblivious to the world around her. Her neighbor, Swanilda, is angered by her aloof attitude, and becomes alarmed when her fiancé, Franz, begins to take an interest in the girl. When she breaks into Dr. Coppelius's house to confront her rival, she soon realizes that Coppélia is not quite what she seems! Coppélia is a comic ballet originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon to the music of Léo Delibes and it first premiered in 1870 in Paris. LakeCities Ballet Theatre is pleased to present this family-friendly ballet with choreography by Kelly Lannin and Allan Kinzie. Marcus High School Senior, Madison McKay, will dance the lead role of Swanilda. Guest Artist from Pacific Northwest Ballet and LBT alumni, Steven Loch, will dance the role of Franz and Special Guest Artist, Nigel Burgoine, formerly of the Royal Ballet, will portray the role of Dr. Coppelius.

After another successful full length production of The Nutcracker with guest artists, Sarah Lane and Sascha Radetsky from American Ballet Theatre, LBT members took excerpts of the famous holiday ballet on the road in December to the children at Lakeland Elementary and Parkway Elementary in the Lewisville Independent School District. The students and faculty at these schools were grateful and appreciative to experience the magic of The Nutcracker right before the holidays!

In January, LBT performed at the Ballet Frontier Dance Festival in Ft. Worth. Dance companies from all over the DFW metroplex were represented and special scholarships were given to a dancer from each company. Faith Jones received the scholarship for LBT. LBT performed two works at the festival, Pas B'aillar choreographed by Shanon Tate and Evensong choreographed by Allan Kinzie.

In February, LBT dancers participated in the Youth America Grand Prix in Irving. Four of our soloists and our LBT ensemble qualified for the YAGP International Finals in New York City in April! The week-long ballet event will be held April 11 thru 19 and includes master classes, scholarship classes, gala performances and an opportunity to see and perform with dancers and professionals from all over the world. Eleven LBT dancers are very excited to be traveling to New York to represent not only Texas, but the United States, as they will perform with dancers from all over the world.

Results from the Regional Grand Prix are as follows: Anastasia Tillman – 1st Place in Junior Classical Division Mackenna Pieper – Top 24 in Junior Classical Division Kathleen Uchal – Top 24 in Junior Classical Division Alexandria Loy – Top 12 in Senior Classical Division Madison McKay – Top 12 in Senior Classical Division

SYMPHONY DELIVERS ON MISSION TO EDUCATE AND ENCOURAGE

Educating and encouraging young people to appreciate,

enjoy and engage in musical activities and endeavors is a

big part of the Lewisville Lake Symphony’s mission. Over

the past several months, they have delivered on the

mission with competitions, concerts and educational

activities for young people ranging in age from pre-school

to university graduate students.

In January, the 15th annual

Vernell Gregg Young Artists

Competition was held for junior high and high school

students. The winner, 16 year-old William Chiang,

brilliantly performed a complete Beethoven Concerto with

the orchestra at its February 22 concert.

On March 6, the orchestra collaborated with the Lake Cities Ballet Theater to

introduce pre-school and elementary-aged children to the wonders of the orchestra

and ballet as they watched an engaging presentation of Peter and the Wolf,

narrated by Fox 4’s Chip Waggoner. It was followed by a “make and take”

instrument workshop and an instrument “petting zoo” where kids got hands-on

experience with real instruments.

On March 8, for the first time ever, the symphony presented an educational concert

for LISD 3rd

graders district-wide. The students had been prepared for the concert

by their school music teachers using a curriculum developed specifically for this

event. Maestro Ming carried that through the concert with an engaging dialogue

that introduced instruments of the orchestra and musical styles. The student’s

appreciation was apparent in many comments such as “wow” and “that music

rocked” that were heard as they left.

Finally, on March 9, the symphony conducted its first ever International Concerto

Competition for musicians aged 18-24. The winner will be the guest soloist at the

symphony’s opening concert in September.

Happy New Year!

We are so thankful for those that attended our Spirit of the Season concert back on December 1, 2012. It was a fun and joyous way to welcome the holiday season to Lewisville. We would like to thank the MCL Grand Theater for hosting us as we celebrated the season.

Lewisville Civic Chorale’s (LCC) next concert will be performing the works of Ralph Vaughan Williams, one of the great English composers of our time. On Saturday, February 23, 2013, at 7:00 PM, LCC will be performing a range of works that Vaughan Williams wrote throughout his life at The Episcopal Church of the Annunciation, in Lewisville. We will be joined by our guest conductor, Lewis Worthington, who is the music director at Lake Cities Methodist Church in Lake Dallas. Lewis is a fan of Vaughan Williams and we are pleased to have him joining us for this concert. The repertoire will include Toward the Unknown Region (1906), Dona Nobis Pacem (1936), as well as other Vaughan Williams’ pieces and hymns. The LCC will be joined by organ and a percussion quartet; it is sure to be a wonderful night.

The Episcopal Church of the Annunciation has been the home base for LCC for over a decade. Every week LCC is welcomed with open arms to practice, house our library, and even host concerts. The February 23

rd concert proceeds will

be used to benefit The Episcopal Church of the Annunciation as a thank-you for all of their generosity towards the LCC.

Lewisville Civic Chorale (www.lewisvillecivicchorale.org)

The Lewisville Civic Chorale

Our spring concert will be Sing for the Cure. This concert will take place April 13, 2013 at the MCL Grand Theater Performance Hall and will include the choral works of Sing for the Cure.

Sing for the Cure is an original song cycle dedicated to those affected by breast cancer; specifically survivors, their families, and friends. This work was commissioned by The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation which is based here in Dallas, Texas. The world premiere of this song cycle took place in 2000 when the Turtle Creek Chorale and The Women’s Chorus of Dallas accompanied by the Dallas Symphony performed the work at the Meyerson Symphony Hall. Since then, the work has been heard around the country and the world. LCC is proud and excited to bring it to the Lewisville area for the first time. Proceeds from this concert will go to breast cancer awareness and research. Please save the date for this important event.

Do you like us? If so, please “Like” the Lewisville Civic Chorale’s Facebook page to help support us and local Lewisville businesses, and find out other fun facts about LCC!

LCC is actively looking for singers of all levels of experience. Prospective members should have a passion for singing, a commitment to attend rehearsals, and a desire to support the organization. Rehearsals are on Thurs. from 7 -9:30 PM, Fall through Spring. For more information about the Lewisville Civic Chorale, contact our president, Susan Barwick, at [email protected]

Indians were some of her favorite models over the years, including Charles Eagle Plume, an Indian who operated a trading store in Colorado, and danced and told stories for his customers. In 1988, her interests suddenly turned from painting to acting after she got a part in a play after painting some background scenes for the play. The Actors Conservatory Theatre (www.GetIntoTheACT.org)

The ACT is celebrating its 14th season this year and has continually focused on

providing quality programming “by children and for children” as it states in its logo, since it was founded in Flower Mound in 1999.

Five full length two act musicals are scheduled each year and every one of them is produced with the most colorful sets, costuming and make-up to the delight of the audiences and all the children involved.

Every child who auditions is cast at this very special children’s community theatre and all fees are kept extremely low to allow all children to take part, whether on the stage or in the audience. Even children with special needs are welcomed to participate in this theatre and free tickets to the shows are routinely distributed through the LISD Special Needs Department.

The ACT performs at its own 155 seat theatre located in Lewisville on Edmonds Lane. Directions to the theatre and all information about this unique theatre can be found at their web site, getintotheact.org.

Children as young as three may audition during the summer and there is no upper age limit as all are welcome to audition. In fact, working with adults helps to broaden the children’s acting environment. This is very apparent during the Christmas show each year when as many as a dozen experienced adults from across the metroplex come in to act alongside our youngsters.

The ACT is a volunteer driven theater company where every child and every family works to produce the shows. The results are fanciful and full of creativity and imagination, with so many hands, hearts and heads pulling it all together.

All the main stage shows are musicals, and both music and choreography are taught to the cast by experienced Musical Directors and Choreographers so that each show is an education in musical theatre.

But the education doesn’t stop there as each cast is taught about the author of the book and story the show is based upon, the time in history and the world in general - a strong part in gaining their own motivation for their individual roles.

The ACT also has a teen company, Actors Conservatory Element or ACE, which also takes part in the annual TnT youth conferences in June. This group is lead by Youth Director, Tyler Brodess, a graduate of both Flower Mound High School and Oklahoma University. ACE hosts an Improv Night each Monday at 7 PM in the theater. For a complete calendar of events for this group, look on line at getintotheact.org.

If you or your children are interested in becoming involved with a great children’s theatre group in the greater Lewisville area, visit us on the web and find out when the next auditions will be held and then Get Into The ACT! . .

All performances are at 7 PM Friday and Saturday nights with

LAF is actively seeking fine art vendors and encouraging local artists of ALL AGES to participate in the Amateur Art Competition. For a fee of $15 (pre-register discount) each artist will be provided high-quality artist-grade pastels and a designated 6 x 6’ square area to work. Artists are asked to submit a sketched rendering of their planned work ahead of time to make sure that the work is appropriate for family viewing at a community event. The following categories will be recognized and awarded: Best in Show, Best use of Color, Best Anime’, Best Visual Concept, Best 3-D Image, and People’s Choice. All entry forms are due by May 28. High School Seniors are invited to participate in the Scholarship Competition where Lakeside Arts Foundation will award three scholarships to the top-selected entries. The First Place scholarship is $500, Second Place is $350, and Third Place is $250. The Non-Competitive Children’s area is open to children of all ages. For $3, children will be provided sidewalk-grade chalk and a designated 2 x 2’ area in which to work. A rendering is not required for this area. The event will close with an Awards Ceremony. Details, rules, and entry forms are available on the website at www.lakesidearts.org. For more information contact Lakeside Arts Foundation at (972) 625-1726 or email [email protected].

Welcome to The Colony Playhouse, a nonprofit children’s theatre whose mission is to enrich, educate and entertain the community by providing a superior experience in theatre and performing arts.

We create theatre by children, for children, through an artistic experience in which whole families can participate.

Our playhouse is run entirely by volunteers who are committed to the advancement of the arts and healthy family activities in our community. As such, we welcome your help and involvement!

1. The Chamber gave up GLAA sponsorship to the City of Lewisville. The City makes available “Hotel Occupancy Tax” money destined to improve the “quality of life.” The State of Texas has made arrangements for the various arts groups to apply for financial grants. This “HOT money” has made significant resources available for the work.

2. The Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater, now a landmark in Old Town, has several venues and is continually busy. Since the facilities are so outstanding, school and other groups rent space for their activities.

3. The City of Lewisville brought aboard Jim Wear as Director of Fine Arts. Jim has an impressive background in the arts, especially theater. His genial and accessible personality, in addition to his leadership skills and innumerable contacts, have made the arts scene prosper in an significant way. Now every article like this one should end with a “lettuce” section – “let us do this” and “let us do that.”

Here are my suggestions:

1. Let us support these fine groups with our attendance and participation. Whether with your immediate family or with out-of-town visitors be sure to come to some of the many events offered by the various GLAA constituent groups. I promise your life will be enriched.

2. Offer to become personally involved through financial support, board membership, ushering, or other areas of personal involvement. You will be glad you did, since you will not find a better group of people.

This suggestion also includes an invitation to join the GLAA Board of supporters by contacting me at 972-436-0932 or [email protected] Sincerely yours,

Gordon Roe Membership Chair
