Warden’s Word!

scholarship and bursary program to help the students at the College. You have continued to boost the Marjorie Ward Lecture and the Canadian Studies Endowments both of which give the College a special place within the University to ad-vance Canadian Studies. You have generously enhanced the endow-ment for Chaplaincy so that now our Chaplain has program money to work with as she exercises her ministry. Finally, you have contin-ued to support all the work on the Residence and the Daily Bread. We can now report that every room has been painted in Residence, and by the time you get this every room will have new floors and new closet doors. It is harder for you to see the unrestricted funds and those that go directly into operating that many of you contribute to. These are the sources of revenue that we can draw upon to cover any shortfall in University funding.

St John’s College continues to be a special place on campus. Our reputation for being a small caring community leads many people to our doors, and not just for the good food. We are one of the few places on campus to leave our classrooms open after hours and weekends for student study space. The mess we have to clean up every day is a sign of the heavy use. We want to remain an open, inviting and caring community. Thank you to each one of you for making this possible.

Being The Fifth Epistle

During the spring budget and planning negotiations with the University, we were asked to plan for a 5% cut in our University budget. Unlike the Faculties, the University

contributes only 23% to-wards the College’s overall budget but we will still have to move some items from our University budget line to the College budget line. The University asked us how we intended to make up for the shortfall, and it is in answering that question that I realise how fortunate we are.

The first answer was that we contin-ue to increase our catering and food services operation. Under the ca-pable management of Ian park, the College runs an extraordinary food services operation that includes not only the Residence dining room, the Daily Bread Café, Espresso 101 but a full catering operation. With the best food on campus, St John’s College is the go to place to eat! Through the generosity of our do-nors we have been able to continu-ally upgrade our facilities by adding the patio in the ‘90’s, Espresso 101 in the 2000’s and refinishing the Daily Bread last year. Your support allows us to expand our operations, which ultimately continue to support the College’s day-to-day operations.

Our second answer was we can rely on the ongoing generous support of our donors. Look through this issue of In Lumine at what you have helped us do over the past year. You have continued to support our

Matriculation A Big Welcome to Our New Students/Staff/Faculty

THE GREAT DEBATE: A friendly rivalry between the two Colleges

From l to r: Stephanie George, David Watt, Joe Darcel and Moti ShojaniaOn 22nd September the event began with a picnic lunch at St paul’s College and was followed by the great Debate. The Resolution (based on Newman’s idea): “That the University’s sole function is that of teaching and not research”. David Watt, Fellow and graduate student Stephanie George, ’12 representing St John’s College debated for the motion and representing St paul’s College was Moti Shojania, Dean of Studies and Joseph Darcel, SpC student. St paul’s was again triumphant for this second annual debate.

We again hosted the Children Rising Mentorship Programme: Children from the Skownan First Nation arrived in Winnipeg to have lunch at the College followed by a programme of Cultural teachings by Carl Stone a student advisor at Indigenious studies and Mad Science.

Our St John’s College team of stu-dents, staff and Fellows raised $1127 for Movember this year. Our sin-cere thanks to all those who partici-pated and even more thanks to those who supported the team.

Toronto Reunion – In February Chris Trott and Jackie Markstrom visited with alumni and friends at a special reunion event held at the Holiday Inn Toronto Bloor. It was a good turn out and many memories and stories of St John’s College were shared.

Ottawa Reunion – At the begin-ning of March Chris Trott and Jackie Markstrom held a reunion in Ottawa. A big thank you to Doug Rowland, ’61 who organized the space at HMCS Bytown Mess. It was a won-derful event and enjoyed by all who attended.

2nd Annual St John’s College Art Competition - During the month of January and part of February St John’s College again celebrated artwork of our students. The pieces were beautifully displayed in the Daily Bread Café for everyone to en-joy. Thanks to the Daily Bread Café for hosting a reception where this year’s winners were announced; First place Tracey Fehr ($300.00), Second place Jeremiah Valle ($200.00), and Third place Jesse Bergmann ($100.00). Thank you to all students who pre-sented their artwork.

Ronald MacDonald HouseOn 20th February, 2014, in lieu of sending out Christmas cards, staff and students signed up to serve a meal for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. It was a full house with 27 people enjoy-ing a home cooked meal of ham, perogies, coleslaw, green beans, corn, and buns and 2 big trifles for dessert! Thank-you to Ian park, St John’s College Food Services Manager and his staff for donating food and helping with the prepara-tion and to Sysco who also donated a big portion of the food! Thanks to our students; Dion Nemez Senior Stick and Adam Wilson UMSU Representative and to our two staff members Diana DeFoort and Amy Craddock. We couldn’t have done it without you all!

Bach’s Birthday Concert- March 20th The Bach Birthday Concert was started in 2012 as a tribute to former Fellow Lawrence Ritchey who passed away in 2006. He loved the Chapel and performed at many events and services during his years as a SJC fellow. We continue this honoured tradition by having tal-ented guest performers. This year’s performers are Jenny Vincent on organ and Sarah Carswell on viola.

Lunch & Lively Conversation! It was a lovely turnout for our 1st Lunch & Lively Conversation on Feb 20th held in the Quiet Room at the College. We had Alumni and Friends from the 60’s right through to a recent grad! We were delighted to have Joan McConnell ’78 as our Master of Ceremony. Joan introduced Allison Chubb, College Chaplain to open with a grace before enjoying a wonder-ful lunch prepared by food services. The presentation by Warden Chris Trott on “pilgrimage to Blacklead Island: My experiences in the North” was very interesting and stimulated some “lively conversations”. Thanks to everyone who participated in a survey. It looks like we’ll be holding 4 of these lunch events a year. See you all at the next one!

Joan welcomes friends and alumni

Beggars On Our Streets

6

Manitobans are reported to be gener-ous people. This is especially true around Christmas time when, for example, we see Salvation Army kettles in shopping centres. We remember that Christmas celebrates the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus who is god’s gift to us for our salvation. god is generous and we in response are generous. When Christmas is over and the Salvation Army puts its kettles away to get on with their work, there are still beggars on our streets. How do we respond to them? Some ignore them. Some give them mon-ey and then pass on. Some stop to speak to them and then give them money. Some think that, after they have given them money, they have no more responsibility. The money now belongs to the beggar and he is now responsible for his use of the money. Others think that their responsi-bility extends to the beggar’s use of their money. One woman decided to buy a meal for a beggar. She gave him the food and went on. He threw the food away. He didn’t want food; he wanted money.

What then does god expect of us, the rich and the poor, in response to the needs of the poor? Scriptures give us an answer in the parable of Lazarus and the rich man. (Luke 16.19-31)The rich man fails to give alms to the poor man at his gate. When he dies, he goes to hell. The poor man dies and goes to Abraham’s bosom, heaven. Christ gives the poor man a name, Lazarus, but leaves the rich man without a name. The Venerable Bede in his commentary on Luke, In Lucae Evangelium Expositio, consid-ers the importance of the poor man’s name and the rich man’s anonymity. He says that by using his name, god knows the humble and approves of them but, by not giving a name to the rich man, He does not know the proud. (Bede, In Lucae Evangelium

Expositio, CCSL Vol. 120, p.303) Bede quotes god saying to Moses, ‘I know you by name’. (Exodus 33.12) Bede does not cite a relevant passage about the good Shepherd, ‘the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out’. (John 10.3) We might conclude that the beggar is Christ’s because He knows his name, Lazarus. The rich man, however, by his own choice by failing to give alms, is not Christ’s and therefore Christ does not give his name. We might also conclude that the rich man has no name because he could be any one of us.

St John Chrysostom wrote a series on sermons, On Wealth and poverty, based on this parable. He points to the rich man’s failure to give alms as the fault which led him to hell. Chrysostom gives us a different idea of our possessions. We are inclined to think of them as our own absolutely. Chrysostom would have us think of our wealth as something to be shared with others, especially the needy. Our wealth is not for us alone but for others and for us. (St John Chrysostom, On Wealth and poverty, Crestwood, 1984, p.12).

Lastly, the Epistle to the Hebrews speaks of entertaining angels unawares. (Hebrews 3.2) St Martin of Tours met a beggar, cold and poorly clothed, in a for-est in wintertime. He gave him his cloak and rode on. When he looked back, he saw Christ wearing his cloak. (Sulpicius Severus, Life of St Martin, 3).

We now have an answer. The beggar is one of Christ’s people whom He knows by name. Our wealth is not ours but for shar-ing with others. The beggar may be an angel of god; he might be Christ Himself. What else can we do but be generous?

Father Sharman recently received his PhD from University of Wales, Trinity St. David

Chaplain’s Corner Loitering with Intent

by Allison Chubb

Welcome to our new Chaplain Allison Chubb

wrestle with the big questions of life and faith.

On my way home later, I wondered what it would look like to loiter with intent in our own lives. What if I intentionally “hung out” with myself, being present for the things that matter most rather than rush-ing through my days checking my metaphoric email so intently that I don’t remember why I’m here in the first place?

The monastic practice of being present to each moment as it presents itself does not come easily to me, so I’ve started finding ways to build “loitering” into my regular routine. For example, the biggest waste of time in my life (apart from sleeping!) is taking the bus, but it is also the only time of day where I am required to sit still and either watch the world around me or talk to god. I don’t read on the bus, so instead I often find myself resting in a way which my spirit longs for but my brain deems unnecessary.

It seems to me that Jesus was the inventor of loitering with intent, lingering as he did over meals with friends and strangers, and wander-ing through the marketplace to see who would show up. What never ceases to amaze me are the times that god shows up when I choose

to do “nothing.” god sends me hurt-ing students, rest for my soul, and glimpses of the kingdom- all when I’m sitting on the bus in traffic! What about you? What ways have you learned to loiter in your own life in order to make space for connecting with god, with yourself, and with others?

There is a term I hear regularly among college chaplains called “loitering with intent.” With so many students and so little time, it’s a practice most of us find remarkably difficult but undoubtedly neces-sary. Intentional “hanging around,” it seems, is the best formula for building relationships. For instance, only yesterday I was standing idly in the residence wondering where I might find the cleaning staff when I suddenly found myself in a conver-sation about gaming and anarchy with two students I had never seen before. A few minutes later, politics turned into sharing experiences of privilege and childhood trauma.

The young men laughed at the idea that three introverts had stumbled into such a full conversation, but I realized that these kinds of con-versations are unable to take place without the practice of presence. As we stood there together, sharing laughter and our deepest convic-tions, I fought a compulsion to hurry back to the office. “I’m wasting time!” I thought to myself. “I haven’t even finished my emails for today and I have three services I should be working on!” I had to laugh at myself for thinking it was a waste of time to do the very thing I’ve become a chaplain for: walking alongside young people as they

Janet MacFarlane’s great uncle, Jim McDermid married her paternal great Aunt, and who among other things collected art work. Janet became the owner of several pieces of the art. One of them, was a beautiful pen and ink drawing of the College on Main Street which Janet felt belonged at the College and so donated the origi-nal work. Thank you, Janet. And, what an amazing family history!

Coincidentally Janet’s maternal grandmother, Janet Baxter, worked as a maid at St John’s College in the 1880s prior to her marriage.

Early last year Jocelyn Barnard, ’63 decided she wanted to do something special for the College in honour of her 50th graduation anniversary. Talking with Jackie Markstrom, Development Office, it was felt that a scholarship would be the most meaningful way of saying thank you to the College. Jocelyn wanted to include her fellow ’63 graduates and so a letter was sent to the graduating class of ’63 inviting them to be a part of this wonderful gift. Together they donated more than $5,000 which was matched dollar for dollar by the Manitoba Bursary and Scholarship Initiative! Every year from now on a Class of ’63 Scholarship will be awarded at Convocation to a student in arts or science. We want to thank the Class of ’63 and especially Jocelyn for making this very special tribute happen – a true legacy to the College and future generations!

Feasibility Study As you may be aware the College undertook a Feasibility Study to explore the potential for a Capital Campaign. Four projects were reviewed in this study: the building of a new Residence; enhancing Scholarships/Bursaries; converting classrooms into Smart Classrooms (technology upgrades!); and investing in our Canadian Studies Programme.

The Study was conducted by ex-ternal consultants, Katarina Kupca and Janet Walker. They made five recommendations:

1. Develop a Strategic Plan that clarifies the College’s vision and engages alumni.

The College is in the process of hiring a consultant to lead us through the Strategic planning process. Once the consultant is in place the process will continue through the spring and be on its way to completion sometime in the fall.

2. Explore partnerships and other funding sources for capital improvements

The Warden is exploring sev-eral partnerships both within the UofM and with external organizations.

3. Strengthen the case for support

Once the Strategic plan is ad-opted by Council the Case for Support will be rewritten to ensure it is in alignment with the plan. A Case for Support is the document that is used to help with raising the large amounts of money needed for the capital campaign!

4. Strengthen volunteer leadership

Again, once the Strategic plan has been adopted then volunteer leadership for the capital cam-paign will be developed.

5. Strength commitment to fundraising

Included in this was a need for the Development Officer and Warden to travel and visit with our Alumni and friends more often. So far this year, we have visited our friends in Toronto and Ottawa with a trip to Vancouver planned for April. We will also be travelling to Brandon, Kenora and other centres closer to home! We look forward to visiting with our alumni and friends and hearing their College stories!

The Sinking of the Athenia

September 2014 will mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Reacting to germany’s invasion of poland, Britain and France declared war on germany on Sunday, the 1st of September. Although Canada did not enter the war until the end of the next week, Canadians were involved that very first Sunday when a german submarine sank the passenger liner Athenia some 250 miles northwest of Ireland sailing from Liverpool to Montreal. The ship carried over one thousand passengers—housewives, children, students, scientists, and refugees—attempting to get home before the war broke out. At least 42 of the 469 Canadian passengers

were from Manitoba and 16 from Winnipeg. Among those plucked from the ocean were Evelyn Morris, a recent graduate of the UofM who would be known as the actress Judith Evelyn, gildas Molgat, the future leader of the Liberal party in Manitoba and Senator, and David Cass-Beggs, the l970s head of Manitoba Hydro. Although 112 people were lost, some 1,306 passengers and crew were saved. Fortunately the Athenia was not so far out into the Atlantic as to be beyond reach of several freighters, a private yacht, and three Royal Navy destroyers. Their rescue was complicated by the fact that some survivors were brought into nearby galway, some back to glasgow,

and some all the way across the ocean to Halifax. This confused and prolonged the process of reuniting families. The sinking of a passenger liner just eight and half hours after the declaration of war galvanized both Britain and Canada, reviving the great War specter of unrestrict-ed submarine warfare, which had been ruled illegal by international treaties. The sinking of the Athenia brought the war to Canada that Sunday, 3 September 1939.
