living a healthy lifestyle can be easy when there are options available to maintain balance of spirit, mind and body. often times, life stress can lead to fatigue, headaches, muscle pain and digestive disorders. as stress builds, exercise, eating well and relaxation is the key to optimal health and wellness.
as a crossfitter and acupuncturist, i try to be proactive in the choices i make each day to prevent illness and enhance performance. i incorporate monthly acupuncture treatments in my personal wellness plan to alleviate pain, maintain mental alertness and manage life stress. as a result, i often leave treatments refreshed and pain free and more importantly, chronic pain issues are minimal.
how can acupuncture help you? make acupuncture part of your workout of the day and avoid injury and burnout. receive treatments 1-2 times weekly for more acute health concerns and once a month for overall wellness.
i look forward to seeing you soon. please feel free to stop by the fitness centre and day spa on tuesday and friday between 9:00am -5:00pm.

Used by trainers, athletes and the U.s. military, thousands of people at all fitness levels now train on the trX. from everyday people who just want to feel and look their best to some of the world’s most elite athletes. the trX is used routinely by all four branches of the military, and can be found in the locker rooms of: major league baseball teams, national league, baseball teams, UFC fighters, Olympic-level cyclists, swimmers & runners.
Benefits of TRX Suspension Training:• delivers a fast, effective total-body workout• helps build a rock-solid core• increases muscular endurance• Benefits people of all fitness levels (pro

trX suspension trainer provides greater performance and functionality than large, sit-down style exercise machines.
our new trX group training program is being offered in two formats, body blast & circuit training. both are very similar in structure and time, but differ in level of
intensity. both formats will be set up and run on the basketball court, using our trX s-frame overhead mounting system. groups are kept
small to allow for more individual coaching by your trainer and to also maximize the
intensity of these hiit style workouts.
TRX Body Blasta strength focused class, which is based on reps, tempo and form, somewhat similar in feel to our
group fitness classes. Body Blast will engage all your muscles with this non-stop trX workout. you will build overall strength, balance
and flexibility with this total-body program. The group is led by an trainer who coaches the group to work together in unison, while varying their own level of intensity to suit their individual training needs. the recommended level for this group is beginner-intermediate, with a duration of 55 min
TRX Circuit Trainingcircuit training challenges users with a fast-paced workout that combines trX strength exercises with cardio drills. timed sets will keep your heart rate pumping as you power through the reps at your own pace. the group is led by an trainer who coaches the group to work in set timed intervals, but coaching you to challenge your own individual limits. the recommended level for this group is intermediate-advanced, with a duration of 55 min.

Organic vs. non-organicwe have all been to the grocery store and had to decipher between the Usda organic tomatoes to the left or the non-organic cheaper tomatoesto the right. which one do you choose? conventionally grown produce generally costs less, but is organic food really safer or more nutritious?
let’s start with the basics of what the word “organic” actually means. the word organic refers to the way farmers grow and process agricultural products, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and meat. organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution by natural means. here are some key differences between conventional farming and organic farming:

Conventional Farming
• apply chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth.
• spray synthetic insecticides to reduce pests and disease.
• Use synthetic herbicides to manage weeds.• give animals antibiotics, growth hormones and
medications to prevent disease and spur growth.
Organic Farming
• apply natural fertilizers, such as manure or com-post, to feed soil and plants.
• spray pesticides from natural sources; use bene-ficial insects and birds, mating disruption or traps to reduce pests and disease.
• Use environmentally-generated plant-killing com-pounds; rotate crops, till, hand weed or mulch to manage weeds.
• give animals organic feed and allow them access to the outdoors.
• Use preventive measures — such as rotational grazing, a balanced diet and clean housing — to help minimize disease.
most people believe that organic food is safer to eat because of the lack of pesticide residue on the pro-duce, but studies are now showing that organic food is also healthier for you as well. according to the sci-enceDaily (July 3, 2012), “A study conducted at the University of barcelona shows that organic tomatoes contain higher levels of phenolic compounds than conventional tomatoes. phenolic compounds are or-ganic molecules found in many vegetables with prov-en human health benefits. The UB’s Natural Antioxi-dant group, headed by lecturer rosa m. lamuela, had previously demonstrated that organic tomato juice and ketchup contain higher polyphenol content than juice and ketchup made from conventionally grown tomatoes.” these polyphenols, natural antioxidants in plants, are considered to be associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular and degenerative diseases, and some forms of cancer. according to rosa m. lamuela, “the benefit of taking polyphenols through foods is
that they contain a wide variety of such molecules, which are increased.”
This would be more beneficial to your health than the intake of supplements. the reason why organic pro-duce contains more of these healthy antioxidants is because of the fertilizers they grow in. organic farm-ing doesn’t incorporate nitrogenous fertilizers, which ward off insects and other conditions, therefore, or-ganic plants respond by activating their own defense mechanisms, increasing the levels of all antioxidants in the plant. the more stress the plants suffer, the more polyphenols they produce; the more polyphenols found in your food, the more beneficial antioxidants you consume through your organic food.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has established an organic certification program that re-quires all organic foods to meet strict government standards. these standards regulate how such foods are grown, handled and processed. the Usda or-ganic seal tells you that a product is at least 95 per-cent organic. if you plan to eat organically, look for this label on food.
call to schedule a nutrition consultation with christina at (407) 303-4013.
some of the most important produce to buy organic include apples, bell peppers, carrots, celery, lettuce, potatoes, strawberries.

the oldest recorded form of obstacle type racing was presented thousands of years ago called the stadion which was an ancient greek running event in the olympic games.
today, this old tradition still lives on, but with much more excitement. obstacle racing has exploded in popularity these past few years with some added oomph; now in the form of Adventure Runs and Mud Runs.
these runs are designed to push your body and mind to the limit. one competition is even designed by the british special forces to put its competitors through the most extreme terrain/obstacles. many adventure runs will have participants plunge into ice water (many times more ice than water), army crawl under barbed wire, jump over fire, run through a canopy of live electric wires, drudge though quick-sand-like mud, and cliff dive, on top of running the already exhausting distance.
Adrenaline junkies flock from around the world to participate in these competitions. these runs are not only designed to tests your physical strength, but your inner strength as well. at times you will feel like you can’t go on (you’re too tired, you have a cramp, the next obstacle looks too intimidating), these course obstacles can represent difficult events in life (a bad break-up, loss of a job, anything). You can either give up, or face your problem head on. finishing a race not only provides a great sense of
accomplishment, but it can also boost one’s confi-dence.
according to Outside Magazine, in 2011, as many as a million people ran obstacle races in the United states alone and the trend is growing. although, you may not be an adrenaline junkie or an extreme ath-lete, there is a race for everyone. many adventure runs are created more for fun and less about the competition. these adventure runs, also called Fun Runs, are themed and prizes are awarded to the participants that are the most outrageously dressed.
the 5K Foam Fest is a great example; instead of ar-my-crawling under barbed wire through mud, par-ticipants slip ‘n slide through a foam pit, and instead of jumping over fire, they must jump through a giant bounce-house-like maze.
whether it be competitive or just for fun, almost all adventure runs donate a portion of the proceeds to a charity of their choice. in fact, according to the Tough Mudder website, in 2011 $2 million was raised for the wounded warrior project. if earning a true sense of accom-plishment, enjoying the camaraderie of your fellow partici-pants, and having a great time all for a good cause seems right up your alley.
down and Dirty competitionadventure runs are great way to test your physical and mental toughness

What are the benefits of Acupuncture?acupuncture is recognized by leading national and international health organizations to be effective in the treatment of a wide variety of medical problems. below are some of the common health concerns that acupuncture can help with:
• Musculoskeletal (neck and back)• Joint pain• migraine and tension headaches• fatigue• stress and anxiety• insomnia• allergic symptoms• skin conditions• Inflammation
What can I expect?an acupuncturist will start with the initial exam where a full health history is taken. Questions are asked regarding health, symptoms and lifestyle. an appropriate physical exam may be conducted which may include a pulse and tongue evaluation. gathering of information enables the practitioner to effective-ly diagnose and detect any specific imbalances that may have contributed to a person’s health problems. the practitioner can then create a well structured treatment plan. after the interview process, you may receive an acupuncture treatment which may include
additional modalities such as cupping, massage, exer-cise and relaxation techniques. The first session with your acupuncturist may last for 60 – 90 minutes.
an acupuncture lifestyle, combined with regular ex-ercise, a healthy diet and other good habits can keep you looking, feeling and performing at your best.
