On the Ten Commandments, from Pope

Benedict XVI in 2012:

“What significance do these Ten Words have for us in our current cultural context, in which secularism and relativism risk becoming the criteria for all choices, and in our society which seems to live as if God did not exist? Our answer is that God gave us the Commandments to educate us in true freedom and authentic love, that we might be truly happy.

“They are a sign of the love of God the

Father, of His desire to teach us true

discernment of good from evil, of truth

from falsehood, of justice from injustice.

Page 2: Celebration of Mass Sherburne, NY 13460-0722 5:00 PM ...eschaton/bulletins/January 31 2016.pdf · Group will be Christine Donovan and Erin Lawrence. The first meeting will be on Saturday,

They can be understood

by everyone, precisely

because they translate

fundamental values into

concrete norms and rules;

and by practicing them

man is able to follow the

path of true

freedom…which leads to

life and happiness.

“When he fails to do this,

when in his life man

ignores the

Commandments, not only

does he alienate himself

from God and abandon

the Covenant with Him,

but he also abandons life

and lasting happiness.

Man left to himself,

indifferent to God, proud

of his own absolute

autonomy, ends up

pursuing the idols of

selfishness, power and

domination, poisoning his

relationship with himself

and others, and following

not the path of life, but

the path of death.

“The sad experience of

history, especially of the

last century, stands as a

warning for all

humankind…With his

cross and resurrection

Jesus brought the

Commandments to

fullness, radically

overcoming selfishness,

sin and death with the gift

of Himself for love.

Accepting the infinite love

of God, having faith in

Him, and following the

path He has laid down is

the only thing that gives

profound meaning to life

and opens the way to a

future of hope”.

OPERATION RICE BOWL

has been a wonderful

Lenten observance in the

United States for many

years now. It was

founded by Catholic

Relief Services to help

feed the hungry

throughout the world, as

well as here at home.

Rice bowls are

available this

weekend, and

everyone is

encouraged to

take one home

and to place it on

their dinner table

where they say

grace before

meals.

Throughout the

Season of Lent

they throw their

loose change or

other money into

the rice bowl.

Then, at Easter

time they bring

their rice bowls to

Church, and the

money collected is

sent to Catholic

Relief Services to

fight world

hunger. 25%

comes back to our

own Food Pantry.

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS

The Stations of the Cross will be held every Friday of Lent and on Good Friday, at 6 PM. CONFESSIONS will be heard on Ash Wednesday, 5:45-6:00 PM.

SAINT MALACHY’S

COMMUNITY FOOD

PANTRY

Celebrates the 35th

Anniversary

of Its Founding

“I was hungry, and you

gave me food.”

In 1981, Fr. John Zeder,

pastor of St. Malachy’s

Church, saw a need for a

food pantry here in

Sherburne and asked

parishioner Carolyn Begani

to help set one up. With a

few shelves in the church

basement and the support

of the parishioners, the

Food Pantry was born.

The Food Pantry now

operates out of the Payne

House, where it occupies

three rooms and has a

refrigerator and three

freezers. From there, its

dedicated staff of

volunteers distributes food

and groceries to the

hungry of the Sherburne

area.

The Food Pantry is open

for families and individuals

in need of food every

Tuesday from 4-6 PM.

People can also get food

throughout the week by

calling one of the on-call

volunteers of the staff.

In celebration of the

Anniversary, the Food

Pantry Staff, now headed

by parishioner Paula

Lathrop, would like to

honor all the past

volunteers who have

staffed the Pantry since its

founding and thank all the

parishioners of St.

Malachy’s who have so

generously supported its

work with their donations

of food and money. There

are also several local

organizations and

community members who

generously support the

Pantry.

As part of this celebration,

refreshments will be

served to the people

during the Pantry’s two

open hours every Tuesday

of February. St. Malachy’s

Confirmation candidates

will be making and serving

sandwiches, along with

beverages, to the people

as they come. The Staff is

also putting articles in the

Sherburne News about the

Pantry and its anniversary.

EVENING FOR MARRIED COUPLES Valentine’s Day Weekend

Would you like to learn more about

yourself and your spouse, and how to

make your relationship even better?

Take the Myers-Briggs Personality

Inventory. These will be scored by Jim

Krisher, Director of the Spiritual Renewal

Center in Syracuse.

The Myers-Briggs is one of the most time-

tested and non-threatening of

psychological inventories.

Then, after Mass on Saturday, Feb. 13th,

there will be a Dish-to-Pass Supper for

married couples, after which Jim Krisher

will return to each person his/her scored

inventory and explain to the whole group

how to interpret their results.

Babysitting will be provided in the

Rectory, beginning at 5:00 PM.

Jim Krisher did this at St. Malachy’s about

eight years ago, and it proved to be, not

only a fun evening, but also a moment of

enlightenment, and deeper

understanding and mutual appreciation

between spouses – “Ah, Now I

understand why she thinks the way she

thinks”, or, “Now I understand where he’s

coming from!”

Please sign up in the vestibule if you

would like to participate.

Each person must do the personal

inventory by Sunday, Feb. 7th. It takes

30-45 minutes to complete. Fr. Smith will

conduct one or more sessions for people

to do the inventory. This is being offered

free.

THE THURSDAY NIGHT

PRAYER GROUP will be on a

“Winter Break” and will not meet this

week. We will resume the first week of

Lent on Thursday, February 11th at 7 PM

in the rectory parlor. All are invited to

experience this “hour of power” in

prayer and praise as a Lenten spiritual

exercise. Light refreshments will be

served at the conclusion. Do join us!
