Come, Creator Spirit, Visit the souls of your devoted; With your divine grace fill The hearts which you have created.

You are called Comforter, Gift of the highest God,Fount of life, fire, love, And spiritual unction.

You are seven-fold in your gifts, The finger of God’s right hand,You are the one duly promised by the Father, Enriching our tongues with speech.

Enkindle your light in our minds, Infuse your love into our hearts;Strengthen the frailties of our flesh By your perpetual power.

May you drive our enemy far away, And bestow abiding peace,So that, with you leading before us, We may shun all evil.

Grant that through you we may know the Father,And that we might also come to know the Son;

And you, the Spirit of Them both, May we trust at all times. Amen.

“Ecce Sacerdos Magnus” Anton Bruckner

Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased God.Therefore by an oath the Lord made him increase among his people.

He gave him the blessing of all nations and confirmed his covenant upon his head.Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;

as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

f i r s t r e a d i n g Isaiah 7:10-14; 8:10 (Proclaimed in English)

The LORD spoke to Ahaz, saying: Ask for a sign from the LORD, your God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky!But Ahaz answered, “I will not ask! I will not tempt the LORD!”Then Isaiah said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary people, must you also weary my God?Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name him Emmanuel, which means “God is with us!”

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

My being proclaims the greatness of the Lord,my spirit finds joy in God my savior. +

For he has looked upon his servant in her lowliness;all ages to come shall call me blessed.God who is mighty has done great things for me,holy, is his name. +

His mercy is from age to age on those who fear him.He has shown might with his arm;He has confused the proud in their inmost thoughts. +

He has deposed the mighty from their thronesand raised the lowly to high places. The hunger he has given every good thing, while the rich he has sent empty away. +

He has upheld Israel his servant, ever mindful of his mercy;Even as he promised our fatherspromised Abraham and his descendants forever. +

Brothers and Sisters:I, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to live in a mannerworthy of the call you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another through love, striving to preserve the unity of the Spiritthrough the bond of peace:one Body, one Spirit,

as you were also calledto the one hope of your call;one Lord, one faith, one baptism;one God and Father of all,who is over alland through all and in all.

But grace was given to each of usaccording to the measure of Christ’s gift.

And he gave some as Apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers,to equip the holy onesfor the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of faithand knowledge of the Son of God,to mature manhood,to the extent of the full stature of Christ.

g o s p e l Luke 1: 26-38 (Proclaimed in English)

The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary.

And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.”But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be.Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.”But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.”Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.May it be done to me according to your word.”Then the angel departed from her.

We praise thee, O God; we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee, the Father everlasting.

To thee all Angels, the Heavens, and all the Powers,The Cherubim and Seraphim proclaim without ceasing:

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of Hosts! The heavens and the earth are full of the majesty of thy glory.

The Glorious chorus of the Apostles, the admirable company of the Prophets, the white-robed army of Martyrs praise thee.

Throughout the whole world the holy Church gives praise to thee, the Father of infinite majesty; they praise your admirable, true,

and only Son; and also the Holy Spirit, our Advocate. You are the King of glory, O Christ. You are the eternal Son of the Father. To deliver us, you became human, and did not disdain the Virgin’s womb.

Having blunted the sting of death, You opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You sit at the right hand of God, in the glory of the Father.

You are believed to be the Judge who will come. Therefore, we beseech you, come to the aid of your servants,

whom you have redeemed by your precious blood.Make them to be numbered with thy saints in glory everlasting.

Save your people, O Lord, and bless your inheritance.Govern them, and extol them for now into eternity.

Day by day, we bless thee; and we praise your name for ever, yea, for ever and ever.Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin.Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Let thy mercy be upon us, O Lord, as we have trusted in thee.In thee, O Lord, I have trusted: let me never be confounded.

As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. In order to be properly disposed to receive Communion, participants should not be conscious of grave sin and normally should have fasted for one hour. A person who is conscious of grave sin is not to receive the Body and Blood of the Lord without prior sacramental confession except for a grave reason where there is no opportunity for confession. In this case, the person is to be mindful of the obligation to make an act of perfect contrition, including the intention of confessing as soon as possible (Code of Canon Law, canon 916). A frequent reception of the Sacrament of Penance is encouraged for all.

f o r o u r f e l l o W C h r i s t i a n s

We welcome our fellow Christians to this celebration of the Eucharist as our brothers and sisters. We pray that our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ’s prayer for us “that they may all be one” (John 17:21).Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are ordinarily not admitted to Holy Communion. Eucharistic sharing in exceptional circumstances by other Christians requires permission according to the directives of the diocesan Bishop and the provisions of canon law (canon 844 §4). Members of Orthodox Churches, the Assyrian Church of the East, and the Polish National Catholic Church are urged to respect the discipline of their own Churches. According to Roman Catholic Discipline, the Code of Canon Law does not object to the reception of Communion by Christians of these Churches (canon 844 §3).

f o r t h o s e n o t r e C e i V i n g h o l y C o M M u n i o n

All who are not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to express in their hearts a prayerful desire for unity with the Lord Jesus and with one another.

f o r n o n - C h r i s t i a n s

We also welcome to this celebration those who do not share our faith in Jesus Christ. While we cannot admit them to Holy Communion, we ask them to offer their prayers for the peace and the unity of the human family.

Coat of ArmsThe Most Reverend Edmund James Whalen

Titular Bishop of CemerinianusAuxiliary Bishop of New York

In accordance with the heraldic tradition of the Roman Catholic Church, the coat of arms of a Bishop is normally composed of:

- a shield with its charges (symbols) coming from family, geographic, religious and historical meanings and/or referred to the name of the Bishop; - a golden processional cross, with one traversal bar, to represent the rank of the Bishop, “impaled” (vertically) behind the shield; - a wide-brimmed green pilgrim’s hat (galero) with 12 attached tassels, (six on each side, with one in the top row, two in the second and three on the bottom); - a scroll with the Bishop’s motto, written generally in black and appearing below everything.

For his coat of arms, Bishop Whalen has chosen a gothic shape shield, frequently used in Roman Catholic Church heraldry, and a processional bottony cross with five red stones to represent the five Wounds of Christ.

36

Motto“WALK HUMBLY WITH GOD”

The motto, “Walk humbly with God” is from the Book of Prophet Micah 6:8,“You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you:

only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

Blazonry of the Coat of Arms of Bishop Whalen“Azure, a chevron between a crescent of the same in chief and a chalice

of the last surmounted by a host argent charged by the letters IHS Sable, in base”

InterpretationThe blue (azure) color symbolizes the separation from the worldly values and the ascent of the soul toward God. This color is taken from the coat of arms of the late Cardinal John Joseph O’Connor, Archbishop of New York from 1984 to 2000, for whom Fr. Whalen served as priest secretary and from the coat of arms of Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan whom Bishop Whalen serves as Vicar for Clergy.

The symbols on the shield are those of the Holy Family, and recall the need to strengthen family life so as to renew the Church. Bishop Whalen is being ordained on the Feast of Our Lady of Loreto, newly instituted by Pope Francis. This feast celebrates the Holy Family by recalling Mary’s house, which was brought from Nazareth to Loreto, Italy in the thirteenth century. It has been a place of pilgrimage since that time, and serves as a place of prayer for families. Bishop Whalen has chosen these symbols to emphasize that the Church is a family of faith, lived in individual families. These symbols of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph illustrate Bishop Whalen’s appreciation for the ways in which his parents exemplified the gift of faith in his family’s life.

The crescent of moon recalls Our Lady, described in the Book of Revelation, 12:1: “A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars”. As the moon does not emit its own light, but rather reflects the light of the sun, so crescent moon reminds us that we, like Mary, are called to reflect the light of Christ. The crescent is in the coat of arms of the Pontifical North American College in Rome where Bishop Whalen studied from 1980-1985, and again 1992-1995.

The chevron represents a carpenter’s square, emblem of St. Joseph, and signifies the rafter which holds the roof of the church. It reminds us of the protection St. Joseph provides as the patron of the Church, families and fathers. St. Joseph the Worker is also the patron of Msgr. Farrell High School, where Bishop Whalen was a student, teacher and principal.

The chalice with the host recalls the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, which nourishes us as is the source and summit of the life of the family that is the Church. It recalls Bishop Whalen’s home parish, Blessed Sacrament, where his parents raised him and his brothers in the faith.

Titular Bishop of ErdoniaAuxiliary Bishop of New York

For his coat of arms, Bishop Colacicco has chosen a gothic shape shield, frequently used in Roman Catholic Church heraldry, and a processional bottony cross with five red stones to represent the five Wounds of Christ.

Blazonry of the Coat of Arms of Bishop Colacicco“Azure, the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary

and a chevron, representing St. Joseph.”

InterpretationThe blue (azure) color is taken from the coat of arms of the late Cardinal John Joseph O’Connor, Archbishop of New York from 1984 to 2000, for whom Bishop Colacicco served as priest secretary and from the coat of arms of Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan, the present Archbishop of New York and Principal Consecrator for the Episcopal Ordination.

The chevron, representing a carpenter’s square, emblem of St. Joseph, is taken from the coat of arms of the late Bishop Joseph Maria Pernicone, Auxiliary Bishop of New York. Bishop Pernicone sponsored the maternal grandfather of Bishop Colacicco when he came to America. Bishop Pernicone confirmed Bishop Colacicco on November 5, 1966.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, along with the symbol of St. Joseph represent the principle devotions of Bishop Colacicco. Consecrated to the Sacred Heart at an early age, the new Bishop prays that his heart will always be in union with the Heart of Christ. Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh, New York was the name of the first parish in which Bishop Colacicco became a Pastor. Also consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the new Bishop daily implores the protection and intercession of Our Lady as he lives out his vocation. With deep devotion to St. Joseph, the new Bishop seeks to imitate the Saint’s dependence on God’s providence and daily prays for the fatherly guidance of his patron. Also, St. Joseph Church, Millbrook, New York is the last parish that the Bishop served as Pastor.
