Too soon? I hope not.

The success of the United Kingdom's campaign for their departure from the European Union has given hope to the loca l beh ind- the- scenes movement vying to reclaim Sedgefield's independence from the Greater Knysna, popularly known as SEXIT.

“If Britain can do it, so can we!” said Boris Janssen, the chief campaigner behind the exit movement, as he lead the throngs of the banner-carrying 'Let's Leave' chanters down Main Street.

He and the other members of the i n c r e a s i n g l y s u p p o r t e d o rg a n i s a t i o n S e d g e f i e l d Independence from the Control of Knysna (SICK), along with their more extreme counterparts of the Time to Initiate Radically Enforced Departure (TIRED) group, believe that the positive implications of Sedgefield's divorcing itself from the Greater Knysna Union (GKU) far outweigh any negative ones. “Knysna Union's policies claim to ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital between Knysna and Sedgefield, but I do not believe this is to our advantage,” he stated. “If you think that, in the current situation, our own economic markets (all three of them) function independently of Knysna, yet they are regularly flooded with Knysna refugees, often taking the food out of Sedgefielders' own mouths!”

He gave an example of his wife having missed the last of Joe's famous steak and kidney pies last weekend because a non-Sedgefielder had purchased it only seconds earlier.

T h e S E X I T c a m p a i g n manifestoes for both SICK and TIRED argue that conforming to the strict and often unreasonable trade specifications set by the politico economic union of all the suburb members of Greater Knysna have changed the character of Sedgefield 's commercial sector since the village was absorbed into the

GKU in the year 2000. “Opening for trade before 10am AND on Friday afternoons – even when the weather is perfect for the beach, promises of same day service from plumbers and electricians, and our poor business proprietors having to always answer the phone, return calls and reply to emails – these are ridiculous GKU rules, they are not the traditional ways of Sedgefield's business sector at all!” explains Nigel Garage, TIRED's executive Chairman.

An article on the TIRED organisation's web page suggests that SEXIT makes sense, because despite the efforts of the GKU to standardise all its members, Sedgefield has sat on the fence with regards to conformation with some of their policies. We asked Garage to unpack this further. “We are referring specifically to the GKU single currency. Thank goodness Sedgefield never totally adopted Rands and Cents,” he said “Many of our traditional businesses still work with the old 'exchange', such as paying for car repairs with fresh eggs, a milk tart and a half hour massage.”

The SEXIT campaigner hastily pointed out that it isn't just the business community that has long felt overwhelmed by the strict GKU laws. “Even our residents are feeling that it's time SEXIT became a reality,” he surmised, “Why should our local residents have to abide by stringent rules set by foreigners, which are against their very nature?” Indeed pet i t ions circulated in a combined SEXIT push by the hierarchy of both SICK and

TIRED suggest that many Sedgefield locals are still struggling with the numerous Union laws, including what they conceive as bizarre regulations such as stopping at stop streets, parking in designated parking bays, keeping dogs on leads and not going to the supermarket in pyjamas.“Such stuff and nonsense, policed by the Knysna Law Enforcement, only serve to chip away at the very core of what made Sovereign Sedgefield so spec ia l when i t was an independent municipality,” Garage told us.

Meanwhile Boris Janssen is assuring the increasing SEXIT support base that the fiscal implications of leaving the GKU will put Sedgefield on a much firmer footing. He states that paying the Knysna Municipality millions of Rands in rates and taxes every year has done very little for the village.“All they do is spend it on wages and infrastructure,” he reasoned, “Whilst if that money was kept in Sedgefield we could support far more important initiatives.” Examples he gave included the proposal for an Olympic sized heated public swimming pool on The Island, open bar Karaoke parties on the Village Green, a permanent drive in cinema on Cloud 9, and free Wine Tasting on Thursdays.

Though far less vociferous than the SEXIT campaigners, those who are lobbying for Sedgefield to retain its position in the Greater Knysna Union are hoping that the Village People will see sense in keeping the Status Quo as is.“I don't want any change. I have all their albums,” said REMAIN campaigner David Cameroff cryptically. His counterparts, through their hastily assembled S e d g e f i e l d U n i t e d i n Commitment to Knysna's Sovereignty (SUCKS), have recently reversed their decision to call for a referendum on the SEXIT motion, citing that the vote would more likely be an emotional one rather than based on the hard facts of the matter.“The SEXIT movement aren't p l a y i n g f a i r , ” S U C K S spokesman Jeremy Corblimey angrily pointed out, “They are

basing much of their campaign on suggestions that people from elsewhere in the GKU are stealing their jobs. Yet everyone knows that lying on their backs and floating upstream on the tide or sitting on the beach and drinking red wine is what most Sedgefielders term 'a busy day at the office'.”

He added that the GKU regulations that the SEXIT backers felt were throttling what they call the Sedgefield Way of Life only served to replace original, far more complex laws and by laws that were already in place when Sedgefield was its own entity.“For example – The GKU by-law that allows bottle-stores to trade on Sundays replaces the original Sedgefield by-law which said 'Bottle-stores should remain strictly closed on Sundays, except in cases of emergency, such as unexpected lunch guests, or the Grand Prix, whereby a customer may meet the owner of the bottle-store round the back where no-one can see’.”

The leadership of the Greater Knysna Union are keeping mum about SEXIT, but must certainly be wa tch ing ca re fu l ly – especially amidst rumours that Brenton, Buffalo Bay and R h e e n e n d a l m a y f o l l o w Sedgefield's lead.“It seems that we're not alone in our quest for self-governance,” said Janssen, “If SEXIT succeeds, other wards may also embark on a course of Municipal Area Departure. And quite frankly....

They'd be MAD if they didn't!” SEDGE CONSTRUCTION

HAS SMUTSVILLE BEEN FORGOTTEN?

Many residents of Smutsville have been continuously shaking their heads in dismay over the last month or two - because the state of the streets and public areas in their community has made them feel like they are on the ‘back burner’ when it comes to receiving some municipal services. They say this has the knock on effect of destroying any pride the community may have in the town, and for some, even the desire to keep it clean.

The general call is for a combined effort from the residents themselves and the Munic ipa l i ty to ge t the S m u t s v i l l e / S i z a m i l e neighbourhoods tidied up and to keep them that way.

The unnofficial dumping ground pictured above is adjacent to David Curry Crescent, which has become a real eye-sore to people living in the surrounding community.“It’s like a free for all,” complained one young man,

who asked that his name be kept out of print, “Everything gets dumped there - from household waste to builders’ rubble to garden waste. Nobody seems to see anyone dumping, so maybe they do it at night or when everyone is at work, but it just keeps growing.”He says that every once in a while some of the rubbish does get removed by the municipality, but not all. And it isn’t long before the noxious piles are huge again.

Worse yet, that same street has two creches situated it, so parents have to walk past the unofficial rubbish tip with their toddlers - which is neither safe nor hygienic.“We appeal to the community to stop dumping here, or anywhere in Smutsville and Sizamile,” the man said, pointing out that there were several other illegal ‘dump spots’ , though none as big as this one. “The problem is that because people do not have anywhere to put their rubbish that is within walking distance, they will just dump it anywhere. What we would like is a properly organised place with rubbish skips that can be taken away and emptied.”

He says that numerous requests have been made to Knysna Municipality for a big clean-up but nothing seems to be done.“We are tired of complaining. Sometimes I feel like we have been forgotten about,” he admitted.

no the r member o f the community, was quick to agree with him, saying that it is hard to stimulate the community to take pride in the town and keep the streets clean when Smutsville always seems to be forgotten about.

She reported that the broken toilets leaking foul water around the communal tap in Montana Street, which had been featured in The EDGE in April this year, had still not been repaired, despite the fact that the Eden Health Inspector had visited the area several times to assess the situation.

Because the toilets, which served over 100 informal dwellings, had no doors and were in a state of disrepair, residents were using the ‘bucket system’. Which meant the emptying of their ‘toilet buckets’ into the public toilet bowls on a daily basis.

Mothers doing their washing at the nearby tap were susceptible to picking up all sorts of germs, as were any children who accompanied them.

Children in the area had been reported as suffering from recurring illness, and it was feared that an epidemic could easily start.

In reply to our enquiry in April, the Knysna Municipality had thanked The EDGE Newspaper for bringing the situation to their attention, and reported that the relevant departments would be investigating the matter and implementing solutions as soon as procedurally possible.“The health of our communities, especially its children, must be protected and cared for, and it is the duty of local government to create a caring environment.” said Municipal manager Grant Easton.

“We will continue with internal campaigns in the municipality and introduce educational sessions with all stakeholders – schools, crèches, businesses, institutions, etc.

“It is however clear that we need to institute further punitive measures on consumers who are using too much water and have made no effort to reduce usage. To the few culprits out there: consider this your final chance to make a positive change. Ideally we would like to see consumption levels of around 15 to 20 kilolitres per household per month.”

The water restrictions in place require residents to only water their gardens at dusk between 18:00 and 19:00 on designated days: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for houses with even numbers, and Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for houses with odd numbers.

Residents are further encouraged to only use tap water for domestic consumption, not for the filling of swimming pools.

NEXT EDITION: 2016/2017 Budget Summary

South Africa celebrates Youth Day on 16 June. On this day we commemorate and celebrate the courage of our youth, and of ourselves as South Africans. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Soweto uprisings.

“Young people need and deserve our support,” said Executive Mayor Georlene Wolmarans. “I believe that the m e m b e r s o f t h e n e w l y established Knysna Youth Council will address challenges

facing our youth. As we commemorate the youth of 1976, it gives me great joy to see young people still interested in the affairs of local government. And making efforts to improve the living conditions of our people. I am confident that they will fulfil their mandate.”

The aims of the youth council are:• to give the youth of Knysna a voice concerning civil matters; • to promote leadership qualities - as well as a healthy

interest in municipal, civil, administrative and community matters - within our youth; and• to organise projects (in line with the aims of Council) to the benefit of the community and especially the youth, and to promote better relationships between different language groups while fostering mutual understanding and appreciation among the youth in the surrounding areas.

“Enjoy the public holiday,” she said. “But remember those

courageous young people who sacrificed their freedom and their lives so that we may enjoy and appreciate ours. Use the opportunities that have been afforded to you today and be the champions of change and champions for hope!”

GS EASTON MUNICIPAL MANAGER

The Municipality reserves the right not to make an appointment.

Fifteen year old Llewellyn Bond will soon be gracing our screens as he takes a guest role in “Suidooster”. This is a much anticipated new Afrikaans 'soapie' – the first to be filmed in Cape Town – which focuses on the lives of three families as they work in and around a small business centre in the fictional suburb of Ruiterbosch.

Our talented young lad, a product of Smutsville School from grade R to grade 3, Laerskool Sedgefield Primary from grade 4 to 7, and now George High School where he is currently in Grade 10, was given this fantastic opportunity after his performance in the stage play 'Affie Kleinplaas' which won the Eden Drama Festival in 2015 and the Tridistrict Drama Festival earlier this year in Cape Town. Bond was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his performance alongside play-writer Samuel Jumat.

In Suidooster, our local lad will be playing the part of a boy called 'Spike' who, on seeing a deli owner find a valuable ring on the shop floor, rushes in to try and convince him it is his. Bond says filming the 40 second scene, which was done on 15 June, was an experience on its own. Clocking in at the kykNET Cape Town studio at 7am and working right through to 7pm, he described it as a very tiring but very rewarding day.

Bond's mother Jacqui Salmons and stepfather Bremen, both well-known locals, are convinced that the short guest appearance will open doors for future TV roles for the teenager. His enthusiasm matches his talent, and he is determined to 'make it' as an actor on stage and screen. Bond mentioned how especially grateful he is to his family for their support, and to Jumat, who he describes as his friend and brother, for providing

SEDGE DRAMA STAR

him with the opportunity. He encourages other youngsters to actively follow their dreams, but be prepared to put in the hard work to achieve them.“When you set a goal in life, do anything to try and realise it. And say to yourself 'I can and I will',” he said.

Look out for Suidooster on kykNET channel 144 - Our local star will be appearing on 21 September.

A RIGHT OLD TREAT FROM JOY GROUP & MASITHANDANE

The elderly folk of Smutsville and Karatara were given a wonderful Winter treat on Wednesday 22 June, when the St Francis Church ‘Joy Group’ blessed them with a three course hot lunch, as well as cake and all sorts of other delightful goodies. This is the sixth annual luncheon thrown for the elderly by the Joy Group.

There were over eighty oldies at the festive do - all part of the “Forget-Me-Nots” project which organises

regular outings for the sometimes forgotten old folk. With the ladies of St Francis handling the cooking and serving of the delicious meal, the Masithandane ladies decided to make the day even brighter by laying on the entertainment. Dressing up as various comical characters they danced and sang amongst the old people, bringing laughs and cheers from all.

One particularly happy lady Ada Windwaai was even more full of smiles, and one of her friends let it slip that it was her birthday. We stopped at her table to confirm this and she said “What day is it today? 22 June? Then I am 90 today!”

Masithandane

As an exercise in social/community responsibility, and to work up an appetite for the end of term treat, the children and helpers in the `Cherish’ project took to the streets around the Anglican Church of Resurrection last week armed with black bags, and recycling clear bags. In quite a short time they had enthusiastically managed to fill most of the bags with rubbish! After the clean up, we all took off to Cafe Vienna where Paul Herd and his team treated all the children to cups of frothy hot chocolate and huge plates full of chicken, rice and veggies. It was a very special outing for children unused to `eating out’, and they did us proud!

CHERISH CLEANS UP & EATS UP

The Cherish Project members got together and made Sedgefield’s streets that much cleaner!

Thanks to Cafe Vienna for treating the Cherish kids.

SEDGE CHRISTIAN CHURCH TURNING 29The members and leadership of the charismatic Sedgefield Christian Church will be celebrating its 29th birthday at 9.30am this Sunday, and would love to invite local folks to come and join them.

The church has come quite a way since it started back in 1987, with its first service ever being held in the home of Ron and Rose Godfrey on the first Sunday of July. At the time the congregation was a round figure of eight.

But within two years it had grown so much they moved to the Sedgefield Town Hall where, under the spiritual guidance of Pastor Noel van der Merwe, they stayed until 2004, with their numbers ever-increasing.

In May of that year the Church was able to purchase their current building. At the time it was a builders’ warehouse owned by Hennie Kombrink, but once m e m b e r s o f t h e c h u r c h

congregation got going with the renovations, it wasn’t too long before the warm and inviting home of Sedgefield Christian Church emerged.

According to Pastor Noel, who still leads the flock, they have even further plans to expand the church.“This year we want to open up part of the building to establish a Youth Centre,” he said, “ But not

just for our members’ families - for the whole community of Sedgefield.” He also said that an outreach soup kitchen is part of the plan - a welcome and much needed service for Sedgefield.

Noel and his wife Susan thanked the members for their support over the years and look forward to seeing everyone at the Celebration this Sunday.

Cherish is a Masithandane initiative and sessions are held at the Anglican church premises every Thursday afternoon during term time. We are seeking more volunteer helpers for this very worthwhile project.

The work is sometimes hard but extremely rewarding and doesn’t have to be every week. Please contact me, Ginny at 0824579813 or [email protected] for more information on becoming involved. God Bless.

DIARY DATELINE BIBLE TRUTH FOR THIS DAYBABYLON" Par 2. Babylon is a substitute religion which satisfies man's traditions and lifestyle, rather than living by "every word that proceeds from the mouth of God" (Matt 4:4). In these last days Christ pleads, "Come out of her my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues" (Rev 18:4).

Dear Editor,Knysna Salary Increases - is this possible? There is a rumour doing the rounds tha t the Knysna Municipality have granted to themselves a 21% increase, and if this rumour is true, it is horrendous. Behind closes doors, to me, it would smack of corruption and not the sort of thing one would expect from the DA.

As I say, it is a rumour, and also no mention of this massive increase was made in the Mayor's last budget as detailed in the Edge, issue 489 dated 01 June 2016.

It would not surprise me if this rumour is really true, in view of t h e f a c t t h a t K n y s n a Municipality have reduced the free water for “non indigent residents” down to 3 kilo-litres, in all probability to fund this rumoured massive increase for our councillors, while “indigent” residents continue to get 6 kilo-litres free water and much else most probably. And what happens next year, will the Municipality again further reduce the free water allocations to us “non indigents” to meet their next salary increase?

Part of my ancestors arrived at the Cape in 1658, long before any of the “indigent” peoples crossed the Fish River. Does this not perhaps make me an “indigent”, having had ancestors here for the last 358 years or, do I not qualify on account of skin colour?

The DA seem to be of the opinion that most “non indigent” residents will automatically vote for them and that the Old Age Grants for “non indigents” go further than Old Age Grants for

“indigent” residents.

DA, you are wrong on both accounts. A couple of us old timers will definitely not be voting for the DA this time around and perhaps not again in the future.

And to top it all, the ex ANC mayor has jumped ship and joined KM, no doubt for the fat salary and perks, and she has been accepted with open arms in the hope that she will woo ANC voters to the DA.

RegardsDisgruntled and disillusioned Ratepayer.

Peter Myers - Spokesperson for the DA responds to the above letter as follows:-

Dear SirWith reference to the 'rumour' that the Knysna Municipality have granted themselves a 21% increase and the comment that this smacks of corruption, I presume your reader is referring to the budgeted increase in councillor allowances and salaries in the 2016/17 budget. It is important to note that the total number of councillors will increase from 19 to 21 following the Local Elections. Therefore provision has to be made for this increased number of councillors, which accounts for the majority of the increased amount being allocated. The minister at national level determines the year on year increase for individual councillors and for this year the increase was only 5.5%.

The reduction in free water for non-indigent residents is certainly not to provide for increased remuneration, but is an acknowledgement by the council that we live in a water scarce area. By reducing the free water allowance for everyone other than indigents, the Council is demonstrating its commitment to the responsible use of this scarce and valuable resource. Your reader seems to be confusing ‘indigent’ with ‘indigenous’. Indigent refers to poor and impoverished people who do not have the means to pay and it is right that there is an obligation and a duty to provide free water for this group of people.

It is also incorrect to say that the ex ANC mayor jumped ship. Eleanore Bouw-Spies left the ANC in 2011 and spent 3 years outside of politics. In 2014 she joined the DA because she agreed wholeheartedly with its vision for South Africa as a country for all of those who live in it based on its core values of f r e e d o m , f a i r n e s s a n d o p p o r t u n i t y . S h e w a s subsequently chosen by the DA as its candidate in the 2014 by-election in ward 5 and became a DA councilor. Cllr Bouw-Spies has demonstrated over a long period of time, both as a past Mayor and as the current Speaker of Council, that she has the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to be an exceptional community leader and we have no doubt that she will show the necessary commitment and leadership to be an outstanding Mayor for Knysna over the next five years.

opinion and that is a given.

I, however, need to ask the writer of the letter named “Peace and Quiet.” If you are so hip and happening, why did you ever move away from the noise you so adore?

To the letter writer named “Killing me Loudly,” I say a huge thank you!

We are in the “noise zone” on the N2 and have NO respite from the constant, 24/7, droning and vibrations - not from traffic on the highway, mind you - but from the area encompassing the Recycling Plant, The Municipal Yard and the Fire Station. Also the late night refrigeration trucks all over.

I read with great interest your article the part where residents with 100 metres should be asked for written permission if the event, in this case buildings, put there by Knysna Municipality from which constant activity are a cause of noise pollution.

With all the upgrading since August 2015. There has not been one single evening that there have not been vibrations shaking our house’s foundations.

The trucks are being started and idled for hours. I know, as I can hear and feel every move the workers that work at night make. Sounds emanate from all over with heavy duty trucks parking for the night all the time and although SAPS have been very accommodating by requesting the drivers to move on, this noise on top of the constant vibrations from across the N2 is now a huge issue for us. It has been for almost a year!

I do not believe anyone who denies that there is a noise pollution problem coming from these sources. Why? I can’t sleep, so I go out there and make sure I know what I claim.

Last night (20 June) the noise and vibrations started a 21h00 and lasted the entire night. Vibrations of our house’s foundations and idling from heavy duty vehicles - truckers or otherwise.

So, in conclusion, Messrs Hip Hop and Happening, your pleasure is someone else’s pain. We heard every “doef” on top of what is described above.

Gatvol has let the worms out!

ISSUE 491 29 June 2016 THE EDGE Page 9

With the 33rd Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival kicking off on 1 July, Knysna and Sedgefeld are expecting a massive influx of visitors. This poses added strain on our already low water reserves and Knysna Municipality urges all residents and visitors to treat water as the precious resource it is.

Executive Mayor Georlene Wolmarans says: "Although we welcome everyone to the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival , I call on residents and visitors alike to help the municipality by continuing to use water sparingly."As a town our consumption level (10,3 megalitres per day) is still above the desired eight megalitres, and with more than 50 000 visitors expected during the first couple of weeks in July, we expect increased consumption which, in turn, means additional strain on our water reserves.

with open arms

USE WATER SPARINGLY DURING THE OYSTER FESTIVAL

"I cannot stress enough the need to keep consumption levels as low as possible to ensure our r e s e r v e s l a s t u n t i l o u r contingency measures can remedy the reserve levels.

Although the level of the Akkerkloof dam has increased to almost 40% (from 34% a few weeks ago), we still have far to go."

Knysna Municipality would like to point out the following important changes to water supply tariffs:

• The free allocation of water has been decreased from 6 000 litres per month to 3 000 litres (except for our indigent residents).

• The water tariff rates have been adjusted drastically in the recent budget with the rate for the first 10 000 l i t res remaining affordable at R11,92 per kilolitre.

• Consumers not making an effort to curb consumption will pay heavily for water usage above 10 000 litres, with the rate rising drastically to R19,14 per kilolitre for consumption up to 20 kilolitres, climbing to over R 4 0 p e r k i l o l i t r e w h en consumption reaches 40 000 litres or more per month.

"Our water restriction measures remain in place," says Mayor Wolmarans, "Water your garden only at dusk (18:00 to 19:00) on

designated days with Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays for houses with even numbers, and Tu e s d a y s , T h u r s d a y s & Saturdays for houses with odd numbers. Please adhere to the tips as communicated through our Water Awareness Campaign.

"It is my sincere hope these measures will not dampen the spirit and vibe of the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival and I trust each and every one will have a fabulous time during the best ten days of winter.

"Please be responsible not only in regards to water consumption, but alcohol consumption as well. Remain patient on our roads as we are expecting the usual congestion we experience during the festival.

Cola Conservancy would like to thank conscientious dog owners for using the bags provided and for keeping the pathway and the beach clean.

The Conservancy welcomed new volunteers who helped the alien hack team - which consists of Conservancy members, a chain saw operator from Sedgefield Knysna Municipality and a couple of energetic assistants. They cleared the pathway to the beach, cut back the overgrown edges and generally tidied up the Cola carpark before moving on to take out alien Rooikranz growing along the roadside in Cola Beach - taking care not to remove the trees where the weavers and other birds are nesting!

The alien hacks are a main focus of Cola Conservancy and you will notice the continued good work that is being done.

The Conservancy would like to make residents aware that they should also remove any alien trees on their property as it is now a legal requirement. Please also do not use the roadside for dumping garden refuse - Take it to the dump!!

Owning a pet comes with many responsibilities, so before adding a dog or cat to the family, there are many questions that need to be asked and answered. A pet is not a toy, but rather a living, feeling being with wants and needs, and as much as a person may be tempted to take up the offer of a 'free' dog or cat from a post on social media or in the classified section of a newspaper, the cost implications that will accompany the freebie cannot be ignored. One of the most important questions to ask is 'Can I afford to be a pet owner?'There's a lot of truth in the saying 'There's no such thing as a free lunch', and the same applies to the 'free to a good home' pet. The purchase price of a pure-bred dog or cat can be very high, so getting a pet for free will have as much appeal as any other 'gift'. However, the benefits of the freebie stop right there. Knysna Animal Welfare Society (KAWS) has frequently been on the receiving end of scathing comments on social media for their stringent vetting of potential adopters and for charging an adoption fee. Statements such as 'I find it insulting to have my home inspected and having to pay for a pet when I am offering a loving home to an unwanted dog or cat', have been bandied about. KAWS is responsible for the safety and physical and mental health of each animal that comes in to the shelter, whether as a stray or surrendered by his or her owners, and every possible measure is taken to ensure that a new home will be a happy, forever home. This responsibility cannot be taken lightly, and with the emphasis on 'welfare', all measures taken are for the benefit the animal in question. Sadly, the love of animals is not enough to sustain the needs of a pet. The lifespan of a dog or cat can be as long as fifteen to twenty years, and sound financial planning is essential to ensure the on-going well-being of a pet. Any responsible pet owner will annually vaccinate, routinely deworm and apply flea and tick control, and, very importantly, sterilise their dog or cat before the age at which he or she can start to reproduce. And just as a family budgets for putting food on the table, so must a pet owner ensure that there is enough money to put good quality food in Rover's bowl. There's also the expense of other essential items such as food and water bowls, collars, leashes, tags, microchipping, beds, litter trays, toys, treats and training.Conservatively, not allowing for medical emergencies, a typical medium-size dog's basic upkeep will be in the region of R4000 a year, and a cat's, R3500. This figure is derived from the cost of an annual vaccination – R340; deworming every six months – a total of R75 for a dog and R32 for a cat per annum; flea and tick control – an average of R100 per month which amounts to R1200 per annum; medium-priced supermarket food – R2400 for a dog and R1920 for a cat, also per annum. A once-off sterilisation operation will be in the region of R1200 for a male dog; R850 for a male cat; R2000 for a female dog and R1000 for a female cat. (Prices are approximate)KAWS adoption fee of R450 for a cat and R600 for a dog covers up-to-date vaccinations, deworming, initial flea and tick control, and sterilisation. If the animal is too young to be sterilised when adopted, KAWS will contact the adopter when the dog or cat is five or six months old to make an appointment to carry out the procedure at the KAWS clinic. So, although this may not be 'free to a good home', it certainly is a bargain.Sadly, many 'free to a good home' dogs and cats are the result of irresponsible pet ownership – the unplanned and unwanted offspring of an unsterilized pet. The reality is that there will never be enough homes for all the abused, stray, surrendered and abandoned animals, many of which do land up at animal shelters. KAWS as well as the community at large is already burdened with such animals. Members of the public who are considering adding a pet to their families are urged to make KAWS their first port of call. There are dogs and cats of all shapes, sizes, ages and 'pedigrees' to suit every taste. Although there are regular adoptions at KAWS, some of the dogs and cats have been there for over a year, patiently waiting for someone to offer them a forever home. All the animals up for adoption can be seen on the KAWS website www.knysnaaws.com or at the kennels in Marlin Street, Hunters Home. Phone 044 384 1603.

WAVES OF CHANGE IN THE GRNP

GEARING UP FOR GREENPLASTIC-FREE JULY

That's the name of an organisation based in Perth, Western Australia, which seems to be spreading across the world – and rightfully so! It was started in July 2011 by 40 committed enthusiasts.

Here is an extract of their web-site explanation of what they try to do and why. It was written in 2015:“Plastic Free July aims to raise awareness of the problems and amount of single-use disposable plastic in our lives and challenges people to do something about it. You can sign up for a day, a week or the whole month and try to refuse ALL single-use plastic or try the TOP 4: plastic bags, water bottles, takeaway coffee cups and straws.

“By 2050 it is estimated there will be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans. Most comes from land and was once in our hands. Refuse single-use plastic and together let's keep our oceans clean. Join over 40,000 people, schools and organisations from 90 countries and let those same hands be part of the solution.”

Reading this spurred me on to find out whether there was any support in South Africa. Whilst I didn't find any records of individuals who are members of Plastics Free July, I did find lots of pointers to people and organisations who are trying to do the same thing and I decided to share some of them with our readers.

The initiative that I found most stimulating is happening at Jan van Riebeeck Primary School in Cape Town. They have started what they call Liewe Aarde Club, which has produced a 5 minute video called “No Packet Required”. The school collects all discarded packaging and once a week it is picked up by a local enterprise called Recycle1st which sorts it into paper, glass, plastic and so on. The plastic is sent to a company called Tuffy where it is processed for reuse. The scholars went to Tuffy where they were shown round by the owner.

What struck me, having watched the video, was the infectious enthusiasm of those who made it. There's no doubt in my mind that they are trying to influence family and friends to do things very differently

A Cape Town based company called GreenHome makes plates, knives, forks and spoons from sugar cane left-over called Bagasse. These can be composted after use. They tell me that they have a number of customers in the Sedgefield area. All this got me thinking about how else Sedgefield could help to reduce a global plague which is set to destroy our oceans and all that live in them. Without doubt, the single most important thing is to query every item of plastic that is part of anything you buy. Get into the habit of taking shopping bags with you.

I also gave some thought to what might define a good local retailer. Who uses the least amount of plastic packaging when you buy something? One very good example is Mr Kaai, the fish and chip shop. The only plastic they use is small pots for salads and they tell me that if you return these containers they will clean them and reuse them. Wild Oats is another place where they've had some success. If you take your own mug for filling you will get your coffee at a discounted price. They are also discouraging stall holders from using expanded polystyrene containers, these being difficult to recycle.

1.Attempt to refuse single-use plastic during July. ‘Single-use’ includes plastic shopping bags, plastic cups, straws, plastic packaging... basically anything that's intended only to be used once and then discarded. If refusing ALL single-use plastic sounds too daunting this time, try the TOP 4 challenge (plastic bags, bottles, takeaway coffee cups and straws).

2. Remember it's not going to be easy! It is a challenge, not a competition so don't worry about being perfect.

3. Collect any unavoidable single-use plastic you buy. Keep in a ‘dilemma’ bag to remind you at the end of the challenge.

4. It's up to you regarding how long you participate. You might decide to go plastic-free for a day, a week, a month or longer! However long you choose will still make a contribution.

Why you should participate

Apart from the small amount of plastic which has been incinerated EVERY piece of plastic which was ever produced still exists on earth somewhere. In the first 10 years of this century MORE plastic was produced than the entire last century! Why use something for a few seconds that is going to spend the rest of your life trying to break down in landfill? We really need to change our habits. We owe this to our children and their children. Our planet cannot sustain any other way of doing things.

THE CHALLENGE FROM PLASTIC FREE JULY

“In the first ten years of this

century, more plastic was used

than in the ENTIRE last century”

and I have to confess that I wondered if there might be some way of starting a similar initiative in Sedgefield. One good outcome might be that children go home and encourage their parents to change the way they do things.

Scully is a unique breed male, born JUN 2015. He is new to the KAWS kennels and would make an excellent addition to a family or make an awesome companion to some lucky person!

Another year has passed and thanks to the generosity of the people of Sedgefield, we are still preparing and delivering approximately 1 200 meals a month to people less fortunate than ourselves.

Funding is essential to enable us to “provide & deliver meals to the aged, frail and disabled or needy people, regardless of race, colour or creed”. Our income comes from three main sources, our regular committed monthly supporters, donations from charity organisations including various churches and fund-raising activities such as raffles, making pancakes and can collections at Wild Oats Farmers’ Market. We are also grateful for the contributions of a variety of food and vegetables r e c e i v e d , s o m e t i m e s anonymously, at our kitchen in the Municipal offices.

Over recent months, there has been a concerning trend showing a decline in our funds, where our m o n t h l y e x p e n s e s h a v e exceeded our monthly income. Whilst we are in a stronger financial position than we were 18 months ago, I would appeal to those who can afford it, to commit to regular monthly payments into our account with FNB a/c 62502775549.Our charity is run mainly by volunteers and there is no “management charge” reducing our income. The majority of all donations goes to the purchase of supplies used in the preparation of meals. We have two paid employees working in the kitchen and we serve meals to the people of Sedgefield and the immediate surrounds. We have a new Non-Profit Organisation number, 150-516NPO and having completed our first fiscal year, we have applied to SARS for Income Tax Exemption. We are in a position to issue donation receipts in terms of section 18A of the Income Tax Act 1962. Any requests to obtain this document m a y b e s e n t t o [email protected] could not exist without our group of volunteers who give

their time to help with delivering meals and assist us with our various fund-raising events. My very grateful thanks also to the members of the committee who have adopted their individual portfolios with enthusiasm and do sterling work. Saskia for doing great with Secretarial duties, Judith for keeping meticulous control of our finances, Beattie for her economic buying of our supplies, Alan, our stalwart chef in the kitchen with his helpers Elsie and Chantal, Meg for keeping control of our “client list” and Angie for church liaison. We are making a difference in the lives of a number people in Sedgefield, who are less fortunate than us and with your help we will be to continue with this worthy cause.Jim MitchellTel – 044 343 1221Cell – 08 379 3737E mail – [email protected]

VILLAGE PEOPLE by Ginny Viner Karen BrandT h i s w e e k ’s v i l l a g e personality, is a very well-known name in town, with maybe, not such a well-known face. She is well-known to ‘locals’ as in 2013 she started and still runs the ‘Sedgefield Locals’ Facebook Page, a forum allowing local residents, o r g a n i s a t i o n s a n d business’ to interact through the medium of social media. Karen was inspired to launch this community initiative after seeing the amazing amount of support given to Knysna locals through a similar forum. She felt that this group would provide Sedgefield people with a platform to connect and support one another, and this has certainly proved to be the case as there are just shy of 2000 local people who are members with more joining every day.So please meet Karen Brand, the real person behind the Facebook Face!

Where were you born, and where did you grow up ? I was born in a small town called Nigel, and I grew up in

the mining town of Springs. I did my studies in the Vaal Triangle before I moved to Johannesburg to start working. At the end of 2000 I moved to Knysna and married my husband 6 months later. We moved to Sedgefield in 2002.

In your working life, what line or profession have you been , or still are, mainly involved with? I have been working in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations for 22 years now. I earned my “stripes” in quite challenging industries from Manufacturing, Banking and Hospitality before starting my own consultancy: EQ HR.

How do you relax? Relax? What’s that? Seriously, yoga helps me to relax. In my free time I enjoy walking on the beach o r i n t he fo r e s t , swimming, gardening and eating delicious food and drinking good wine with family and friends.

Please complete this sentence; Not many people know that….. I’m part cyborg, I have a pin in my knee, which makes for interesting conversations at airports.

Favourite foods? an and Italian

Do you have a ‘Bucket List’ and if so what’s on the ‘top’? Yes, I do, on the top of my list is to go to Japan and see the cherry blossoms and the ice monkeys.

What is the most interesting place you have ever been, what made it so interesting? The most interesting place I’ve ever vis i ted is Dresden, Germany. Dresden was and is the cultural & educational centre of Germany. Dresden is steeped in history and although much of the city had to be rebuilt after the war, it has managed to preserve its heritage and unify its citizens in the face of severe adversity (25, 000 people died in Dresden during the war). I particularly love the beautiful baroque grandeur of the Green Vault.

Are you competitive, or is it more about playing the game? It’s about creating your own game

Do you like to dance? And if so do you Hip Hop or is it Strictly Ballroom ? I love dancing, I studied ballet for 12 years, I also did jazz and

Indi Spanish dancing until I finished school . Nowadays , I do something between a Morrisey jive and an Ian Curtis’ bop.

What constitutes a real treat’ for you ? Sleeping late

Who inspires you? My husband, Quintin. He is the most trustworthy, honest, kind and genuine person I know.

Does music play an important role in your life, if so what are your preferences? Extremely important, I cannot live without music, music goes everywhere with me. I find it extremely cathartic and mood altering. I generally listen to u n u s u a l , a l t e r n a t i v e , independent music labels including Ethereal, Ambient, Nordic Folk, New Wave, Dark Wave, industrial, EBM, Post punk and classical … Actually, maybe it would have been easier to tell you what I don’t listen to!

Do you have a weakness? if so would you care to tell us about it?I’m not sure if it’s a weakness, but I’m not a morning person. I’m sure my husband thinks it is.

If I were a cartoon character I think I would be…… Wonder Woman because despite her extraordinary hunting and fighting skills, she possesses the Lasso of Truth, which forces anyone it captures to obey and tell the truth.

What do you read? At the moment, lots of Labour Law updates, kiddies books ( I have a toddler) and Sedgefield locals ;)Please try and describe your attitude to life in a few words Achieving balance in the duality of life.

Duality exists in perfect balance all around us: the seasons, night and day, positive and negative energy, yet we tend to think that life should only have happiness, life and laughter, when actually without the equal, opposing energy, the former would have no meaning.

P l e a s e c o m p l e t e t h i s sentence; I think Sedgefield is…………….. the perfect home.

KNYSNA MUNICIPALITY

NOTICE TO ALL SUPPLIERS.

Knysna Municipality will no longer be managing the supplier database and registrations of new businesses wanting to register as a service provider. All municipalities will have to work through the Central Supplier Database as of 1 July 2016. Updating and/or amendments will be the responsibility of the vendor.

The Central Supplier Database maintains a database of organisations, institutions and individuals who can provide goods and services to government. The CSD will serve as the single source of key supplier information for organs of state from 01 April 2016 providing consolidated, accurate, up-to-date, complete and verified supplier information to procuring organs of state.

Prospective suppliers interested in pursuing opportunities within the South African government are encouraged to self-register on the Central Supplier Database. This self-registration application represents an expression of interest from the supplier to conduct business with the South African government. Once submitted, your details will be assessed for inclusion on the Central Supplier Database.

All suppliers will be required to complete required information on the CSD website (https://secure.csd.gov.za/ ) and must ensure it is complete, accurate and comprehensive.

A valid email address, identity number, cell phone number and bank account details are mandatory in order to register on the CSD. Apart from the above, it is foreseen that B-BBEE information will be included in the CSD.

Any queries can be directed to [email protected] or 012 406 9222.

DID YOU KNOW ...•

that a Hospice Nurse is vital to the terminally or chronically ill patients? They provide palliative care to improve

pain and symptom control and support the family in caring for patients

at home. From: Brigitte Taim [[email protected]] Sent: 07 June 2016 12:47 PM To: [email protected] Subject: SA men's sexual health in state of crisis Dear Bomber

? This June, which is recognised as national Men’s Health Month, a leading pharmaceutical company specialising in men’s health, has taken up the gauntlet to drive home the serious state of affairs that SA men’s sexual health is in. It primarily revolves around the poor personal management of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity and hy-pertension, and as a result men are suffering in the bedroom. See press release below for more info.

? Should you want to interview Tumi Motsei, spokesperson for Pharma Dynamics re the dire situation, please let me know and I’ll make the necessary arrangements.

? Kind regards,

Why do we need to have rehabilitation? Well, amongst other reasons if you've had an injury or surgery then you are no longer in the condition that you're accustomed to.

Rehabilitation is the slow process of getting you back as close as possible to the way you were before the accident or surgery. The trauma that you've been through physically takes its toll and will continue to do so, unless you address the physical issues that arise. Pain is an alarm and if you ignore it, it's like putting it on 'snooze' - it's still there.

When should one start a rehabilitation regime? Ideally, if you follow the process to the 't', then six to eight weeks is a good time to ease into it. Regular r ehab i l i t a t ion t r ea tmen t s depending on the severity of the injury would be determined by your health care professional, a decision which is based on the assessment of your current cond i t ion and s i tua t ion . Inflammation needs healing on a

cellular level, in which case, we use medication. After six to eight weeks of treatment via anti-inflammatories et al one should be good to go. Always check with your doctor before starting something new after you've been under their care.

Where should one look to start rehabilitation? Depending on the reason that you need 'rehab' a good place to start would be with your doctor or physiotherapist. A s u rg e o n s h o u l d h a v e 'rehabilitation professionals' that they refer to - and it's a matter of asking well in advance of needing the treatments - especially if the 'work' is needed after surgery. Rehabilitation could involve any number of steps, from regular physio therapies in which the health care professional mobilizes you and then in to bio-kinetics, swimming, walking, Callinetics or Pilates - where you mobilize yourself.

And therein lies the rub, rehabilitation is first something that seems to be outsourced. But essentially the onus is on the individual to keep up with the

maintenance. It isn't over night that one miraculously bounces back - quite the contrary, it takes time to recover. A balance of time resting and moving towards the ultimate goal of perfect health. Remember, there is no rush or quick fix to your former self - in fact, they say, 'the amount of time it took you to get into this condition, double that to get back to where you were.' Obviously in the case of surgery that isn't the case but if you think of what you put your body through with major operations in hospital then you can respect that it's going to take time to recover. Patience is key and a sense of humour essential.

Whatever it takes to get back on the road to a normal healthy lifestyle, never forget one thing, keep breathing.

Rehabilitation - Not A Quick Fix!

HOSPICE is holding a Book, Cake and Plant Sale on the 8th of July. If you have books cluttering up your shelves that you will never read again, then please donate them to Hospice. If you enjoy baking and would like to make a donation to Hospice then what better way to help? You can bake a cake, biscuits or pies and either deliver them to our shop on the day of the sale or phone the shop to arrange for them to be collected. If your garden needs a clear out then please don’t throw those plants away, let hospice sell them to raise funds. Please come along and support us, the shop will be open as usual. Our annual Auction is to be held at Montecello’s on the 22nd of October. We are running a raffle for a Philips toaster valued at R900.00 the tickets are R10.00 each and the draw will be held at the Auction. Tickets available from the Hospice shop on Main Rd.

CLUB NEWS Miemie has been in hospital but we understand that she is home once again and we send our love and thoughts to you, Miemie.Good to see Julius back on the green and looking very good after his knee operation.

Our thanks once again to our greenkeepers for the very good condition of our greens and to Joey and her helpers who keep our gardens looking so good. The aloes are particularly beautiful at this time and we are indeed very fortunate to be able to play bowls in such glorious surroundings.

Someday, everything will make sense. So, for now, laugh at the confusion, smile through the tears and keep reminding yourself that everything happens for a reason.

Wise words.

Winter arrived with the Monthly Mug competition and it was a winter’s day of discontent for one Ali Lasskorn. Or was it? The Oxford dictionary defines “mug” as a drinking vessel or a buffoon. As there is no mug presented one can only surmise that the competition is a i m e d a t c e l e b r a t i n g mediocrity and Ali is no stranger to this situation. Strangely no one asks who won the competition but wants to know who the “mug” was and it is he who is placed o n t h e p e d e s t a l . S o congratulations to Ali on his re-taking of the duck/mug for the umpteenth time, with 24 points. Surely he has made the “duck” his own personal possession, so fond is he of acquiring it.With a net score of 56 strokes, the winner of the A Division was James Polson. It is said that James loves golf so much that when he hugs his wife he uses an interlocking grip. In second place was Buks Triegaardt with 57, which was great after his poor showing in the better ball competition of the previous week. Third spot

went to Mike Newbury with a score of 58.In the B Division the top points scorer was Henry Growther with 38 points pipping Peter Heath with 35 and the effervescent Terry Savage on 34.The day was capped with a thoroughly enjoyable braai a n d A l i ’ s y o d e l l i n g reverberated amongst the hills late into the night.23/06/16Winter has reintroduced the silly season at the SLGC. The day’s competition was called cross country. You are required to tee off the first tee to the third green, for example, and then from the third tee to the first green and so on in a mad scramble over the whole course. On paper it resembles a demented game of snakes and ladders. One is generally not g i v e n t o t h e o l o g i c a l speculation but when the eventual winners Henry Growther and Dave Wright were announced, after a countout, on 45 points beating Philip Hendrikse and Hamish Ledingham, one wonders. In third place were Hans and Terry Harflett.Next week players will only be allowed to bring three clubs onto the course. A note of thanks for the greenkeeper, Mr Mynaardt, who is doing a sterling job.

June has not been kind to Sedge Links Ladies golf, the first two Fridays of June being rained out. However, Friday 17th June dawned a crisp and dry nine degrees. 14 Ladies enthusiastically took to the fairways to play the monthly Medal and Putt competi t ion. The worthy winners were Gold: Marina; Silver: Helen; Bronze: Ronnie. Birdies were few and far

between with only Elize, Marina and Sarah making 1 each.Although overcast and cool conditions prevailed on the 24th June a strong turnout of 18 ladies teamed up to play Individual Stableford, 2 scores to count (pink ball double). This event always ensures a fun morning and 5 out of the 6 teams kept the pink ball in play for 18 holes. The winning team was Emily; Liz; Jean and Wendy, with an excellent round of 118 points. The cool conditions enabled a flock of birdies,Marina making 4; Elize 3; Helen 3; with Moraig (a welcome sight back on the Links after her op), Emily, Almarie and Colleen making 1 each.

The tournament will run over the two weekends of the 23rd and 30th July 2016.

In their duties as first aiders, the crew have often treated young people who have been injured due to fighting or other similar negative activities, and so they understand the need to keep youngsters ‘off the streets’. Sport, particularly soccer, is one of the most popular ways this can be achieved, which is why they feel a tournament is a great way f o r t h e m t o e n c o u r a g e youngsters.
