Board Setup

The game board is 25 squares wide by 16 squares high. Each larger building is 7x3 in size, while

the small buildings are 3x3. Once the buildings have been drawn, color in the appropriate colors in

each square, following the image above. Red squares are player spawn locations, yellow squares

are search areas, solid green are where the zombies spawn during the course of searching, the

green X squares are where the initial round of zombies start at the beginning of the game, and the

blue triangles are the doors into each building.

Set Up

1. Each player chooses a prisoner to play as for the game. Up to 6 players may play. Each player takes his or her respective Player Bio Card.

2. Each player rolls 1 six-sided die (1d6) to decide which player will move first. 3. Each player, starting with the player who will go first, will again roll the d6, to decide in

which section each player will start. The players who are first in the turn order have priority. Ex: Player 1 goes first and Player 5 goes second, each rolls section 6, Player 1 starts in section 6, Player 5 rolls again for a new section.

4. Players place their tokens in the appropriate spawn area in each section on the board, and then places zombies in their spawn sections on the board.

5. Players decide on who will move zombie tokens around the board in the Zombie Movement Phase. This can be everyone, or just one person.

6. Players decide what game length they want to play, and shuffle the appropriate number of Warden Event Cards.

7. Players shuffle all Search Deck cards. This deck contains weapon cards, item cards, Z.I.D. Pill Cards, and Zombie Spawn Cards.

8. Place one zombie on every zombie spawn point within the streets. (Designated by X on game board)

9. Players draw the first Warden Event Card and begin play.

The Story

Years after an infection causing humans to turn into zombies, a lone prison stands in a city where

the Warden’s devious plots have given him the most power in the entire world. With control of

hundreds of guards, thousands of prisoners, and the cure to the infection, he creates a game that his

prisoners can play for their chance at a life outside of imprisonment:

“Prisoners! What a glorious day this is, huh? Boy do I have something planned for you guys! I know you

have all been clamoring for the cure, and your freedom, even if it means facing the apocalypse! Haha,

you guys are the best! Well, anyway, my guards and I have devised a little game that will allow you to

have these very things! Sounds pretty enticing doesn’t it? Well let me lay it out for you all: Outside this

very prison, is a city, which I have had under my protection these past years. In this city, is an area

made just for you! I know that you are all thinking ‘Oh we get to live in this city and leave our cells?’

Well you are all thinking WRONG! Haha! In this city, my guards and I have laid out supplies,

equipment, and weapons. Volunteers for my little game have to go out into the city, and survive until I

put the Cure into play! Of course, the catch is, you will be in a city filled with zombies, and er... you will

all be armed to the teeth. Oh, and did I mention there is only enough cure for one of you?

WELL! Six of you volunteers will be sent into my new city cellblock, and will play my little game. Whichever one of you is lucky enough to grab the cure and survive will not only win the game, but they will also be airlifted out of the city! Wow, imagine that folks! You have my word on this one, it’s going to be spectacular! Anyone who wants to volunteer for my new game, just let a guard know at any time, and we’ll let you play! I am way too nice to you guys! Doesn’t it sound like fun? SO! Once we have our first six volunteers, we’ll let the fun begin, on the Apocalypse’s one and only game show, something I like to call: Cell Block Z!” - The Warden, 2036

The Prisoners

Each Prisoner’s combat statistics and skills are displayed on their respective Character Bio Cards.

The Boxer: A professional boxer who was caught betting on his own fights, and was imprisoned

several months before the infection outbreak.

The Gangster: A gang member who partook in numerous illegal activities. His charges when

imprisoned before the outbreak include assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, and drug

possession.

The Mercenary: An ex Sergeant Major turned mercenary. Before the infection becomes recognized,

a zombie attacks his young daughter in the yard. He attacks and kills the zombie, and is imprisoned

for murder.

The Nurse: A young nurse working in a large hospital who is imprisoned after being caught on

security recordings stealing large amounts of drugs from the hospital, in an attempt to cure her

dying father of the infection.

The Sniper: An ex-military marksman. After his End of Active Service, he suffers from severe Post

Traumatic Stress Disorder, and was unable to find a job due to his lack of education. He attempts an

armed robbery, assaults the bank teller, is apprehended, and imprisoned.

The Track Star: A marathon runner in the Olympics, who, in order to give herself a better chance at

winning, physically assaults a competing runner, breaking her legs, and is arrested and imprisoned

for assault with a deadly weapon.

The Warden

The Warden is arguably the most powerful man left on earth after the outbreak of the infection.

Political leaders, military officers, even entire armies were wiped out by the plague. The Warden,

however, somehow found a way to recruit very important people; managing to create a cure to the

outbreak was thing very thing that anchored his position. With this, he would have power over

everyone. Malicious, ruthless, and debatably insane, he creates a game that would only be allowed

under his regime; with thousands of prisoners, hundreds of guards, and an entire planet full of

zombies at his disposal, why not?

Turn Order

Cell Block Z has several phases that occur during each round. These phases will happen before and

after the player turn phase, in which all players will take their turn in the order that they have

rolled in setup.

1. Warden Card Phase: A player draws a Warden Event Card from the deck, and announces the card to all other players, and its effects. Follow the directions on the card, and an event caused by The Warden will occur, effective immediately until the next Warden Card is drawn.

2. Zombie Movement Phase: In this phase, all zombies move 4 spaces towards the closest player to their starting position. They will always beeline towards the closest players. They cannot move through walls, however they will slowly but surely move towards the player units. Zombies who are the same distance from 2 players become confused and do not move until the next Zombie Movement Phase.

3. Zombie Attack Phase: During this phase, every zombie in a space directly next to a player token will attack that player. Each zombie may only attack a player once during this phase. If that zombie is next to multiple player tokens, that zombie will attack each player once. The player being attacked must roll the die for every zombie attacking him or her. Once a zombie has attacked, the player may strike back against each attacking zombie by rolling the die to attack based on their current skills and weapons. This retaliation costs no action points.

- If the zombie rolls a 6, the player attacked is bitten. This adds +15 to the bitten player’s infection

level.

- If the zombie rolls a 4 or 5, the zombie scratches the attack player. This adds +5 to the scratched

player’s infection level.

- If the zombie rolls a 1, 2, or 3, the zombie misses its attack due to its slow nature, and the player is

unharmed by the zombie.

4. Increase Infection Total: One thing that the Prisoners were not notified of was the fact that they would all be infected at the start of the game. At the start of each round, every player adds 5 points towards their infection meter. The infection slowly spreads throughout the body, and if nothing is done, they will slowly and painfully deteriorate.

5. Player turn: Each player will have 10 action points (12 for the track star) per turn that they can use to navigate the board, search for items and enter combat. These action points reset at the end of that player’s turn. Any unused action points are lost. During this phase, players can perform each of the following actions:

Page 35: Cell Block Z Prototype Setup Guide - WordPress.com decide what game length they want to play, and shuffle the appropriate number of Warden Event Cards. 7. Players shuffle all Search

35 Cell Block Z Prototype Document

Detailed Rules:

Choosing Game Length:

Players can decided on one of two game lengths when playing the game. Player’s may vote, arm

wrestle, or argue to come to a final decision.

-If a shorter game length (45 minutes to 1 hour) has been selected, players must search

through the Warden Event cards and set aside the Cure Card. The Warden Event Cards are

then shuffled and 9 cards are drawn, face down. The Cure card is placed within those 9

cards and those cards are shuffled again. These 10 cards will be used for the shorter game

length.

-If a longer game length (1 and a half hours to 2 hours) has been selected, all 20 Warden

Event Cards will be used for the game.

Player movement

1. Players may choose to move around the board however they like. Each square moved on the

board uses 1 action point.

2. Players may not move through walls, zombies, or other players unless they are in cooperation

with the player.

3. Players may not occupy the same space as another player or zombie under any circumstance.

4. Players may land on any unoccupied square. Be it spawn points, doorways, search points, or any

open square.

5. Players re-spawned as zombies can move 4 spaces, the same as normal zombies.

Other than these rules, players can move around the board freely. If players perform tasks other

than moving, they can still move (depending on their remaining action points.)

Here are some helpful hints that players might want to keep in mind when moving around the

board:

1. Zombies will always move towards the nearest player on the next zombie movement phase, and

can only move 4 spaces per turn.

2. Players may stand on zombie spawn points inside of buildings in order to block them from

spawning on that square.

3. Players can block doorways, search points, and open squares from other players by finishing

their turn on that square.

Page 36: Cell Block Z Prototype Setup Guide - WordPress.com decide what game length they want to play, and shuffle the appropriate number of Warden Event Cards. 7. Players shuffle all Search

36 Cell Block Z Prototype Document

4. Players do not have to search when they are inside a building or standing on a search square.

5. Players may still search and move around the board even after the cure is in play.

Searching

Any time a player lands on or passes by a search space (denoted by a yellow color), that player may

draw 1 card from the Search deck. This costs no action points for the player. Players may only search

each designated search space once per game. Players may use the building tracker to keep track of

search spaces they have already visited. This restriction is not applied when searching for the cure

card.

Running past zombies

When a player runs past a zombie (a move of 2 or more squares that passes directly next to a

zombie), the player takes +5 infection level as the zombie scratches the prisoner as they run by.

This excludes The Track Star.

Player Combat

Player may use 3 action points to initiate combat versus any player or zombie within range of the

weapon they are using. If fighting another player, the person being attacked must wait until their

turn to retaliate. The player will refer to their character bio cards and/or weapon card to determine

what amount of infection level increase is applied when attacking other players if they successfully

hit. Any hits versus a zombie are instant kills.

When attacking either zombies or other players, the attacking player will roll the die to determine if

they have ‘hit’ their opponent or not.

1. When attacking with no weapon (unarmed), player must be in a space directly next to their opponent.

a. Rolls of 4, 5, and 6 will hit and apply +5 infection level to players. This attack

instantly kills zombies

b. Rolls of 1, 2, and 3 will miss.

2. When attacking with a melee weapon, players follow the weapon’s statistics as indicated on the weapon card.

3. When using a ranged weapon card, players follow the weapon’s statistics as indicated on the weapon card. When using ranged weapons, players may attack horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Using Skills

Each player has his or her own specific skills. Some are passive skills that are always in effect and

others are active skills that, in most cases, will require action points to use. Refer to player bio cards

to determine when each player can use their active skills and the amount of action points required

to use that skill.

Using ZID Pills

During their turn, players may choose to use any Z.I.D. pills they have found to reduce their

infection level by 20 points (unless otherwise noted on character bio card). Doing this will cost the

player 5 action points since the effects of the drug make them woozy for a short time. If the player

has less infection level than the Z.I.D. pills heal, their infection level is reduced to 0.

Using Search Deck Cards

Search Deck cards will come in three distinct types.

First will be item cards that can only be used during that player’s turn.

The second are instant cards that can be used at any time during play.

The third is weapon cards that players may use when attacking both zombies and players.

Refer to each individual card to see the effects of that card.

Spawning Zombies Whenever a “Spawn Zombies!” card is drawn from the Search deck, the building where that card

was drawn has 1 zombie placed in each zombie spawn point (designated by a green colored space).

If a player or another zombie currently occupies any spawn point space, no zombie will spawn at

that location.

Maintaining Card Hand You may only have a total of 4 cards at the end of your turn. You must either use or discard any cards over this total. Any used card is placed in a trash pile and any card that is discarded is shuffled back into the search deck. When attacking and you have two or more weapon cards, you must choose which weapon you will use by placing it face up in front of the other players on the table before the die is rolled. Cooperative Play You may choose to ‘team up’ with another player or players at any time during the game. When all players have agreed to the team up, each player’s skills, including your own can be used by all members of the team, but only as long as you or they are within 5 spaces (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally) of each other. Cooperating players may also pass through each other when moving on the board but may not occupy the same space. The moment you or your team member declares an attack on you; all shared skills are lost before that player can use the skills.

38 Cell Block Z Prototype Document

Player Deaths When your infection level reaches 100, (120 in the case of the Boxer), you are deemed dead. You

then takes your prisoner bio card, and shuffle it into the search deck. This allows your character to

be drawn as a zombie, and gives you a chance to get back at the enemies. ‘Zombie’ players may

move up to 4 spaces and attack twice if able. If you are killed again, your card is placed back in the

search deck and may be drawn again.

How to Win or End the Game After every round of Cell Block Z, there’s a chance that the Cure card will be drawn from the Warden

Event Cards. When the card is drawn, roll a D6 to determine which zone the Cure will appear in.

Once the zone is identified, all the remaining players must race to the largest building in that zone

and start a search. The first player to obtain the Cure and successfully survive three rounds in that

building is the winner. To make matters worse for that player, zombies will spawn to stop any

survivors from winning. If no survivor remains at any point during the game, everyone loses.

F.A.Q. (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: Where do players start?

A: At the start of the game, each player will roll a die to determine which section of the board they

will start in. There are six sections on the board and each have a designated spawn section. The

number rolled is the area in which the player will start. If two players roll the same number, the

player lower in turn order must roll to find an unoccupied area to start in.

Q: How many players can play?

A: 3 to 6 players can play this game. We recommend at least 3 players in order for everyone to fully

enjoy the experience.

Q: Which way should players move around the board?

A: The player is allowed to move in any direction on the board. As long as the player has the action

points available, they can move freely. There will be temporary restrictions brought about by

Warden Event Cards, but the players will be aware of closed areas as they play.

Q: What happens if every player dies?

A: If every player dies in Cell Block Z, the game ends and nobody wins. It’s a survival game, so at

least one person must be alive for the game to continue.

Q: What do Warden Event Cards do?

A: Warden Event Cards have an effect on each player. Each card does something to change the

game. The card will either have an effect on a single player or multiple players. The cards can also

help or hinder the affected players while they try to survive.

Q: Can zombies/players attack through walls?

A: No, players and zombies are unable to attack through walls.

Q: Why do players gain infection points when attacked? Where is the health bar?

A: In Cell Block Z, each players’ infection level is their health bar. The difference is that the

characters in the game are infected with a disease. They’re slowly turning into zombies, but they

can slow down the infection as well. Whenever the player is attacked, they increase the amount of

infection they have. Also at the start of each round, the players’ infection level is also slightly

increased, so it’s better to not waste any time.
