Growth

Cells need nutrients and they need to lose wastes. As the cell grows, it becomes less efficient at absorbing these nutrients (and losing wastes). The cells therefore divide.

Repair

When muscle, skin and other tissue get damaged (eg. From a cut, burn, etc), cells are damaged or destroyed. These cells are replaced by healthy cells dividing.

a) Asexual – this involves the division of a single cell into two identical daughter cells. Yeast, bacteria and viruses reproduce this way.
