• Occurs in two ways

• Mitosis- makes somatic (body) cells

• Meiosis – makes gametes (sex) cells

• The process of cellular division is called mitosis.

• G1 (Growth phase 1) – the cell begins to grow

• S (synthesis) – DNA is synthesized (copied)

• G2 (Growth phase 2) – the cell continues to grow. Until mitosis occurs

Controlling the Cell Cycle

• Cancer is a term used to describe uncontrolled cell growth.

• It is usually a malfunction in the cell cycle that causes cells to be continually traped in this cycle.

• This usually arises from a mutation in a gene.
