Cell Division & The Cell Cycle
Why do cells need to divide?
Growth Replace worn out cells Repair (healing) Asexual Reproduction
1.) Interphase
The PARENT CELL
Cell grows to full size & prepares to divide
DNA is COPIED!!!!!
This phase takes the longest
2a.) Mitosis- Prophase DNA condenses to
form chromosomes & they become visible (X)
Nuclear membrane breaks down into PIECES
2b.) Mitosis- Metaphase Chromosome line up
in the middle of the cell
Chromosomes attach to the spindle fibers
2c.) Mitosis- Anaphase The duplicated
chromosome splits & the chromatids (chromosome halves) move to opposite ends of the cell
◦ Chromatids move “AWAY” from each other
2d.) Mitosis- Telophase 2 new IDENTICAL
nuclei are formed
Cytoplasm pinches in the middle to form a waist
3.) Cytokinesis
2 DAUGHTER CELLS
Cell completely splits & 2 new IDENTICAL cells are formed
They are called “Daughter Cells”
◦ “Cytokinesis = Complete”
