The shape of a cell is a result of it’s function.

[Protein shape if also determined by it’s function]

As soon as cells divide, they become specialized into different types to serve many different functions.

RBCs carry hemoglobin and oxygen to all body tissues.

RBCs are flat, round, and small which allows them to travel through capillaries (which are very small tubes and curve a lot)

Nerve cells carry electrical messages from the brain to the whole body, allowing the body to respond to stimuli and maintain homeostasis.

Nerve cells are long and thin, so they can transport messages quickly

Muscle cells must contract and overlay each other in order to flex.

Muscle cells are bundles of linear fibers, that are long and made up of many strands.

Sperm cells need to “swim” long distances in order to reach an egg for fertilization.

Sperm cells are the only cell found in humans (men) that has flagella (tail).
