There are two main advantages to being multicellular. Organisms can be LARGER, and there can be a varietyof different kinds of cells. To learn more about size, cells, and being multicellular,

Clicking on ANY blue part of the image will let you see that object ormagnification.
Notice the blue numbers along the bottom. A magnification of "1" means lifesized. A magnification of "10" means everything looks ten times bigger than itreally is. Something that must be magnified by "1,000" to be seen is onehundred times smaller than something that must be magnified by "10" to beseen. Also notice the green lines of scale that appear at some of themagnifications.

Make a table of three columns in your journal. Put the following headings at the tops of the columns:"Organism", "Size," and "Possible Functions." Use your table to compare the Dust mite and theStaphylococcus bacterium. Click on the blue "100" and use the scale in the screen to estimate the size ofthe Dust mite. Then click on the "10,000" to estimate the size of a Staphylococcus bacterium. Be sure toinclude units. In the last column (under "Possible Functions") list different tasks or activities the two differentorganisms can do. Examples of tasks would be: eating, walking, breathing, biting, scratching, and so on.

Proteins are extremely important to living things! Each of the following cellstructures has something to do with proteins. First, match the cell structure withits protein function. You can check 16!22 of your textbook for more information.
Nucleus Some proteins needs to be altered and shipped out of thecell. This organelle handles alterations and shipping.
Ribosome Tiny organelles that make proteins using coded messagesas their instructions.
Endoplasmic reticulum This organelle carries coded copies of the information tomake proteins.
Golgi complex When proteins are first made, many pass into this structurefor transport to other areas.
After connecting the organelles with their functions above, draw a cell below andshow the path of protein from beginning to end.

Proteins are extremely important to living things! Each of the following cellstructures has something to do with proteins. First, match the cell structure withits protein function. You can check 16!22 of your textbook for more information.
Nucleus Some proteins needs to be altered and shipped out of thecell. This organelle handles alterations and shipping.
Ribosome Tiny organelles that make proteins using coded messagesas their instructions.
Endoplasmic reticulum This organelle carries coded copies of the information tomake proteins.
Golgi complex When proteins are first made, many pass into this structurefor transport to other areas.
