    Cell Transport: Unit 3B-passive transport-active transport-tonicity

    Selective Permeability: (create a metaphor)

The Cell does this in two ways: Passive Transport:

    Active Transport:

    Passive Transport-does not require energy

Diffusion- movement of molecules in a fluid or gas from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration.

Concentration gradient-difference in the concentration of a substance from one area to another. Always move from high to low.

Osmosis- The diffusion of water. Water is able to move from higher concentrations to lower concentrations without using energy.

Facilitated diffusion-Diffusion of molecules across the cell membrane through a specialized transport protein.

    Microscope Lab

    1. Draw one plant cell and one animal cell.

    2. Observe what happens to an onion in water and salt water. Draw and describe the differences.

Warm Up: Tuesday October 29thDescribe what processes are happening in the diagram below.

    Eggsperiment

Background info: A chicken egg is a cell! The yolk is the nucleus.

    Materials:

Hypothesis/Prediction: Predict what will happen to a cell that is placed in distilled water, tap water, and karo syrup.

Warm Up: Monday November 4th1. Thinking back to the eggsperiment, diagram the movement of water (osmosis) in the syrup, tap water and distilled water and label the type of solution (hypo, hyper, iso)

    X= solute

Warm Up: Describe the differences between the animal cell (red blood cell) and plant cell in each solution.

    Dialysis Bag Demo

Fresh fruits and vegetables are sprinkled with water because they lose water due to osmosis. The water lost usually evaporates. So they are sprayed so that they stay fresh and to prevent the loss of water.

The saltwater fish in freshwater would gain water and the freshwater fish in saltwater would lose water and become dehydrated. Do NOT ever do this to freshwater or saltwater fish!
