    The Cell Theory

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    13/41

All living things, like humans, animals, plants and bacteria, are all made of one or more cells.

The Cell is the basic Unit of all living things.

All living things, like humans, animals, plants and bacteria, are all made of one or more cells.

The Cell is the basic Unit of all living things.

All cells come from existing cells

(All cells come from parent cells)

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    15/41

A cell is the smallest unit in living things. Some livingthings like a tiny bacteria is made of just a single cell.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    16/41

Other organisms like humans or plants can be made oftrillions of cells.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    17/41

Because cells are so small, cells were not discovered until

microscopes were invented in the mid-1600s.

    A. EYEPIECE

    Contains the OCULAR lens

Lens, or system of lenses closest to your eye.

    Helps magnify specimen

    B. NOSEPIECE

Holds the HIGH- and LOW- power

objective LENSES; can be rotated to

    change MAGNIFICATION.

    K. ARM

    Used to SUPPORT the

    microscope when carried

We always hold by base and arm

    C. OBJECTIVE LENSES

    Magnification ranges from

    10 X to 40 X

    H. DIAPHRAGM

    Regulates the amount of

Even before cells were discovered, people wanted tosee things far smaller than they could see with the

    naked eye.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    30/41

In 1665, one scientist named Robert Hooke built amicroscope for himself to look at tiny objects.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    31/41

One day, Hooke decided to look at a thin slice of cork.Cork comes from the bark of cork trees.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    32/41

When he looked at the slice of cork under hismicroscope, the cork looked as if it were made of little

boxes. Hooke named these boxes cells, which meanslittle rooms.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    33/41

Hooke became the first person to describe that livingthings are composed of cells.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    34/41

Hooke also looked at feathers, fish scales and the eyes of

houseflies, but he spent most of his time looking atplants.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    35/41

Since plant cells have a cell wall surrounding theircells, it makes plant cells easier to see under a

microscope than cells from humans and animals.Because Hooke couldnt see the cells of animalsclearly, he thought that only plants were made of cellsand humans and animals were not made of cells.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    36/41

Just ten years after Hookes discovery, a Dutchmerchant named Anton van Leeuwenhoek, a major

microscope maker (constructed a total of 400microscopes during his lifetime!) used one of hismicroscopes to look at pond scum.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    37/41

With his microscope, he found small organisms living inthe pond water.

  • 8/2/2019 Cells Day 1-King

    38/41

He also looked at blood cells belonging to differentanimals and humans, and was the first person to ever

see bacteria under a microscope as well (using thebacteria found in his own mouth!).
