Dear Readers,
With the summer vacations over and the heat waves finally making way for the much needed monsoons, there can only be one thing on every hardcore ‗socceroos‘ mind - the beautiful game-
and that‘s no exception here at Wynberg-Allen.
With the FIFA World Cup less than a year away and Real Madrid going on a crazy
spending spree with the likes of Ronaldo and Kaka, it is no surprise that soccer fever in school has reached a whole level this year. So, what better time to publish our first ever Mini Excelsior Soccer
edition.
The four House Captains, Tsering, Anmol, Johnny and Gurjeet sure have their work cut
out trying to get their formations and combinations to click with each of them having their sights fixed
on the beautiful Inter-House Soccer Cup.
This certainly is the best season of the year for the boys. I‘m pretty sure that the girls would differ with me on this one but don‘t worry girls, we‘ve certainly got something exciting lined up
for you! So until next time, all you Peles and Maradonas enjoy the beautiful game and for just this once
try not to keep it ‗clean‘ when it comes to taking a tumble in the mud!! and may the best team win!

Staff vs. Students At the heart of the match was an old tra-
dition being fulfilled, a little further from the heart was a game of callous cheating,
unnecessary shouting and a total disre-gard to offsides; but isn‘t that what a
Staff vs. Students match is all about?
Mr. Tindale reached the pitch first from
among the staff. The students ―obediently‖ waited for their mentors.
The students had a good warm-up with shots aimed at Tsering, the goal-keeper.
(Note must be made of Johnny who shot mind boggling shots before the match,
got overexcited and couldn‘t do it during-
the actual game, sadly.) After this, the bulldogs and heavy weights put on their
boots. The match began with an argu-ment—much to the delight of the specta-
tors.
We shall forget that one - since there are
many more to come. The main match
began at 4:40PM on the 2nd of July, 2009.
The attempts of the students soon brought
them on the brink of winning for them-
selves a fabulous goal from Peter after a
cunning fake by Phuntsok. Mr. Connor hadn‘t even the time to wink. But no!
How could it be a goal? That too so soon! Mr. Champa‘s eyes scanned for some-
thing to fuss over and soon Fuss took him over. Calling in backup, he fussed with us
that we had 12 players on the field. We,
like angels, took our goal back even though the staff had had 12 players on
their team sometime previously.
Playing as a forward, Mr. Wilson tried controlling Mr. Rayneau‘s furious kicks
into oblivion but they were just too fiery
for him.
At half-time, photographs were taken. Mr. Mani, as the official photographer,
was more dazzling than the flash itself.
Cheating is one thing but blatant cheating
is another. The staff appealing for ―Offside!‖ again and again was prepos-
terous (and, in the words of Ms. Edgar,) none of the ―Charlies‖ even seemed to
know what offside actually was. That
meant the staff were cheating in front of
their own students and even in front of their wives and they tell us not to………..
(hmm... I wonder what‘ll come next?).
Peter, Blessen and Phuntsok brought
soccer back to the game. Quick passes and one-twos soon made way for a
chance and the ball was put away by Johnny like a bullet into the goal. The
game was a like a half-filled jug waiting to be used until the final whistle was
blown. Himanshu Singh, Amrinder Singh(whose angle of kicking was a little
wrong - otherwise two balls wouldn‘t
have disappeared) and Yash Yadav kept the pressure on the staff forwards, espe-
cially on Mr. Tindale who looked like he
had just come from a Board Meeting.
To all those out there who wanted some-
one to get injured-Mr. Sharma was. Yes,
you heard me right –Mr. Sharma. Who did it? Well, that‘s a question I‘m sure
he‘ll love answering himself if you ask
him politely.

Q1.What are your plans for this year’s soccer season?
Tsering: To get the cup, of course!!(?)
Anmol: We will go in unplanned but determined.
Johnny: We lack a good defense but we will try to play our
best.
Gill: We don‘t have a good team. Its an average team with a
few good players in the Senior Division so I can‘t say much.

Q2. Any key players?
Anmol: Pulakit, Yash and yours truly.
Johnny: Phuntsok, Peter, Beniwal, Rupani and... (making a humble
face).
Gill: Not me…but John Paul & Navneet.
Tsering : I don‘t want to lower our players morale by giving names and
if everyone gives their 110% (not mathematically possible) we will
surely do well..very well (drifts off into a world of imagination).

Q3. Your team needs to improve on…
Tsering: Teamwork & fair play.
Anmol: Ball control & finishing.
Johnny: Finishing and defense…we also need a good goalkeeper.
Gill: Like I‘ve said before we are an average team which needs to improve on nearly
everything & now that Johnny says it – we are also in need of a goalkeeper.

Do you know your soccer well enough?
Q5: What would you tell your teammates before they enter the field?
Tsering: Play tough, play hard but play fair.
Anmol: Give it all and you‘ll see where it takes you.
John: Stick to the formations, play a passing game & control the ball.
Gill: Play your best, leave the rest.
Allen- A relatively balanced
side. Though lacking a good
defense, this is made up for
by Tsering himself.
Powell-A tough side, relies on
aggression and speed which
can cause the other side to get
agitated in Powell‘s favour.
Condon-An elusive team. If
not checked can cause
heavy damage. Good
counter attacks with high
velocity kicks.
Foy- The best team, if
you‘re going by names.
Though, when frustrated,
they lose the skill
advantage.
Q4. Rumor has it that Foy House is a formidable team. Any comments?
Anmol: Foy has a good team but Allen is a bigger threat.
Johnny: It‘s nice to hear such things…(chest fills up with air) but we should not underesti-
mate or overestimate your opponents.
Gill: Foy!!(note of surprise)
Tsering: To quote from the movie Troy-―That‘s why no one will remember your name.‖
