Cardiff is a modern city that is both safe and friendly. There are 3 large universities in Cardiff and every year approximately 65,000 students study here.

We have spent years listening to our students and by listening to them we have been able to understand what they want from their:

Getting AroundCardiff is a very compact city and can easily be explored on foot. Students usually use the efficient bus service or cycle around the city.

ShoppingCardiff is one of the UK’s top shopping destinations and has one of Europe’s biggest shopping centres.

Cardiff BayCardiff Bay is just a mile from the city centre. There is a wide range of restaurants, bars and shops for visitors to enjoy along with attractions, such as the Wales Millennium Centre.

SportThe city was named as the European City Of Sport in 2009 due to its role in hosting major international sporting events. It has hosted the Rugby World Cup, the FA Cup final and in 2010 the Ryder Cup was held just outside the city.

Low Cost & SafeCardiff is one of the best value university cities, according to The Royal Bank of Scotland’s Student Living Index. Individual attentionOne of the keys to successful learning is the amount of individual attention a student gets from their teacher. We want students to get the most out of their time at Celtic, which is why our courses have a maximum of just 10 students in each class.

Course assessmentProgress through the levels of proficiency is based on assessment results, improvement, class participation, homework and academic reports. Most students progress by one level each term. Teachers will regularly talk to every student about their progress.

CEFR LevelOur course levels are described using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR describes language ability on a scale of levels from A1 for beginners up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. This makes it easy for anyone involved in language teaching and testing (learners, teachers, teacher trainers, etc.) to see the level of different courses and qualifications.

Placement TestAll students are given a placement test on their first day at the school. Using the results of the placement test and following an interview with a member of the academic team, students are placed in the most suitable class for their level of English.

Individual Learning PlansEach student at Celtic School is given an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) on their first day at the school. During their initial interview, a member of the academic team will discuss and record the student’s aims in their ILP and provide practical suggestions as to how best to work towards achieving their goals. ILPs are monitored carefully and updated regularly by the teachers, who also provide students with weekly tests, a fortnightly report on their progress and assessment of their fortnightly portfolio work. At the end of the course, students are able to take their ILPs away with them along with their final report and certificate as evidence of their progress and time at Celtic School.

Mid & End-of-Term TestsAll students are required to sit mid and end-of-term tests. The results of these tests help us to decide if a student should progress to the next level.

Grammar DoctorRegular ‘Grammar Doctor’ sessions are held in the school, allowing students to get help with any grammar points that they find difficult.

General English

Course DescriptionGeneral English is a course for learners who wish to improve their use of everyday English. The course is designed to meet the needs of learners in a variety of English language settings and aims to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world.

The course follows an integrated skills programme and covers the areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, acquisition of new vocabulary and phonological awareness.

Course StructureStudents who choose a 15 hour course will study every morning, Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 12:45pm following a course book provided by Celtic. Students who choose a course of 21 or 24 hours will also study in the afternoons.

The General English course will help students improve their all-round ability in English. Students who initially enrol on the General English course may later progress to an examination preparation course, such as IELTS.

Afternoon General English

Course DescriptionThis course is for learners who wish to improve their use of everyday English. It is designed to meet the needs of learners in a variety of English language situations.

The course follows an integrated skills programme and covers the areas of reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, acquisition of new vocabulary and phonological awareness.

Course StructureStudents who choose this option will study Monday to Friday from 1.30pm to 4.45pm and will follow a course book provided by Celtic.

Student VisaThe Afternoon General English programme has 15 hours of study per week, and therefore fulfils requirements for both Student Visitor Visas (including ESVV) and Tier 4 General Student Visas.

The Afternoon General English programme is an additional option from Celtic School aimed at students who are unable to attend the morning classes. This is a cheaper alternative to studying in the mornings, whilst still offering a full-time General English course.

Universities base their decision to accept an international student on certain conditions, one being that the prospective student achieves the IELTS band that is necessary for the course they have applied for.

Each level of our IELTS course combines language development with examination techniques,study skills and examination practice.

These courses introduce all aspects of the academic examination at varying levels and provide strategies for dealing with each section of the IELTS exam.

We offer three different IELTS courses at Celtic to suit the needs of lower, mid and higher level students.

IELTSCourse DescriptionOur three levels of IELTS preparation courses are designed as a progression path for those learners who wish to advance their skills and knowledge of academic English to sit the IELTS examination (academic module).

The courses are designed to:

• Develop English language skills in an academic context

• Help students acquire the necessary examination techniques so they can prepare for the IELTS test or improve their current IELTS score

• Help student to become more confident in using English for academic purposes and in everyday situations

Course StructureStudents who choose a 15 hour course will study every morning, Monday to Friday between 9:30am and 12:45pm following a course book provided by Celtic. Those who choose a course of 21or 24 hours will study skills based classes in the afternoons.

Course Assessment & ProgressThe course is assessed by means of weekly tests, a half-term test and an end-of-term test. In addition to this, learners will be encouraged to keep a journal and complete fortnightly portfolio work.

Progress through the levels is based on test scores, attendance and performance in the class and on homework.

Students should achieve a minimum of 70% on tests and have no less than 80%attendance throughout the course to progress to the next level.

Booking an IELTS TestThe test fee for our local centre is £125 per test (2012). Celtic’s course fees do not include the IELTS test fee.

Course StructureStudents study 24 hours of General English for a minimum of 4 weeks. After completion of their English course, students undertake a 4-12 week work placement. Working hours will be agreed with the company before commencement on the placement, but will be a minimum of 30 hours per week.

Notes:Bookings must be received at least 8 weeks before the start date. This course is only available to EU/EEA nationals and Japanese and Taiwanese students who obtain a Youth Mobility Visa.

Our Trinity courses cover the core components required to sit the Trinity GESE exams. Along with providing a communicative approach, the lessons also give students the opportunity to gain confidence and fluency in their everyday use of English. The afternoon sessions (if TNGE 28) allow students further preparation time to develop, practise and present their chosen topic in readiness for the examination. Key examination strategies are also highlighted in these sessions.

Homestay AccommodationLiving in homestay accommodation offers one of the best ways to practise English outside of the classroom.It also helps students to experience our culture and the British way of life.

We organise all accommodation ourselves. We listen carefully to student feedback and only use homestay providers where students have been happy.

We also offer private home accommodation where students may experience less contact with the hosts and may live with more than 4 other students in the house. This accommodation is suitable for couples, but is not suitable for under 16s.

Student ServicesAirport Pick-up ServiceOur airport pick-up service can be booked from most UK airports. After a long day of travelling, Celtic staff willbe at the airport to welcome students and take them directly to their accommodation.

Student ID CardWe issue all students with a Celtic Student Card at the start of their course. This shows they are a full-timeinternational student and can be used for obtaining discounts during their stay.

Opening a Bank AccountWe can issue students with a letter to help them to open a bank account in the UK.

How to apply1. Complete a booking formA booking form must be completed and returned to us by post, fax or email. Alternatively, an online version can be completed on our website at www.celticschool.org.uk.

We also require the following documents:

• English language test results (SELT) if applying for a Tier 4 General Student visa

• Any English course certificates• A valid passport copy• A copy of confirmation of sponsorship

2. Booking confirmationAs soon as we receive a completed booking form, we will confirm receipt by email. We will send an enrolement letter and an invoice.

3. PaymentOnce we receive full payment for a course of 6 months or less, or the 1st payment for a course of more than 6 months, Celtic will issue VISA documentation (if necessary).

Note: Celtic recommends that students who are going to apply for a visa make a payment at least 8 weeks before the course start date. Students who book a course of 6 months or more can pay tuition fees in three equal instalments. There is no extra charge for paying in this way.

4. Other informationWe will send accommodation details, plus airport transfer information, if applicable, 2-4 weeks prior to thecourse start date.

Any student under 18 years of age must book a return transfer provided by Celtic School and full-board homestay accommodation.
