The CEMS Club Prague is happy to introduce to you the first edition of the CEMS Internship Buddy. It is an information guide that gathers and passes on the knowledge from CEMSies that have already done their internship to those of you who are in search and preparation for it. The main ambition of the CEMS Internship Buddy is to benefit from information we all have in the CEMS network, so that each one of us can make a better decision and choose the internship that will fulfill one’s expectations. Also we want you to find an inspiration here about the positions, companies and places that you would not otherwise consider.

Moreover, the Internship Buddy provides you with the information about the administrative requirements that CEMS internships must comply with and also the advice about the financial support that you may apply for.

Where did you find the internship? I received the job offer from another CEMS intern in the company. All internships can be found online at www.telekom.com, in the Careers section. Many offers require German language skills, only some are available in English. Usually, many interns work at the company headquarters.

How long in advance did you apply? I applied about 6 months in advance. A minimum of 2 months is needed for the HR department to finalize the hiring process of a new employee.

How did you prepare for the interviews?

I studied some documents about the telecommunications industry and about the company itself – what is the current development, markets they focus on.

How does the selection process look like?

After sending my CV and cover letter, I was selected for a phone interview. Afterwards, I was asked to complete a short case study.

Does the employer cover the interview/travel expenses

No costs were related with my interview.

What were your typical job responsibilities?

We researched current developments in the industry, compared the performance of Telekom with that of the main competitors, and monitored market trends. Most projects in the department were done in small teams, so I usually collaborated with another colleague. I mostly worked on analyzing telecommunications markets of various European countries. Then I contributed to various ad-hoc tasks that were required by other units within the organization.

Was it a valuable experience? I learned most during the first 3 months of my internship and got really interesting insights into the industry. The second half of my internship was more about delivering work and less about learning.

What did you enjoy the most/did not like?

What I liked most was my team, which was very young and international. Unfortunately, the company environment and the city did not feel so international, and I felt a bit limited because I did not speak German. For an intern with German knowledge, the environment would be much more enjoyable.

Would you recommend this internship to other CEMSies?

It is certainly an interesting place to get to know about the functioning of a large corporation and to gain valuable insights into the dynamics of the Telco industry.

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

Come with an open mind and try to learn from your environment, Telekom is an interesting organization which faces many challenges in a quickly changing industry. Do not expect to experience an international environment in the city of Bonn. A short-term stay here without local language knowledge is possible, but limits the options you have during free time.

Housing Tips Student housing available at www.studentenwerk-bonn.de for reasonable prices.

Activity Tips Bonn is a city full of parks, museums, and galleries. Lively city of Koln is located nearby.

Where did you find the internship? CEMS classmate recommendation, who was finishing his internship at the company.

How long in advance did you apply? 2 months

How did you prepare for the interviews?

I checked what "hot" topics in the industry are, trends, main services, growth areas etc. I checked the datamonitor report on Deutsche Telekom (available from the EBSCO database at VSE) and several articles about the industry trends from the McK quarterly.

How does the selection process look like?

Interview via phone - intro of yourself, "guide me through your CV", then discussion about industry basics, trends, challenges for the company.

Does the employer cover the interview/travel expenses

Not needed, interview is via phone. But I doubt they would cover it.

What were your typical job responsibilities?

In general, preparation of presentations with market/competitor developments for board members and Europe division executives.Examples: prepare an overview of the changes our competitor undertook recently; prepare an overview of the telecom market in a specific country (usually where D.Telekom has subsidiaries); prepare quarterly reports - how markets & competitors were performing; participation in the preparation of databases with data for modeling market revenues, the latter serves for the goal setting for subsidiaries (T-Mobile in CZ, SK, HU, PL, NL ...etc.)

Was it a valuable experience? Yes, lots of learning about the industry. Also, learning about work and life in a huge corporation with all its advantages and challenges.

What did you enjoy the most/did not like?

Most- international atmosphere in our department- young colleagues in our team- you can have very good work life balance in this company- nice city with very good location- meetings with interns organized by the company, especially in the beginning very good for networking, getting to know people like yourselfDid not like- big company = bureaucracy, slow processes, internal policy between competing departments

Would you recommend this internship to other CEMSies?

Yes, especially to those who are interested in telecoms, IT and mobile gadgets of all sorts, and want to learn how to communicate information effectively via powepoints.

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

Of course, it is not necessary to know the industry before coming here and 99% of the interns don't, but learn by doing. The team at market intelligence is young, dynamic, bosses are very good people and English is sufficient (I personally don't speak any German). However, speaking German helps in many informal situations.

Housing Tips It is possible to stay at student apartments of the University in Bonn http://www.studentenwerk-bonn.de/wohnen/praktikanten-ferienmietvertraege/

Activity Tips Lots of museums in the city, also Cologne is very close and there's always something happening. Living in student apartments has the advantage of getting to know exchange students who organize parties and trips :)

People were great, many interns there, great location in Europe.

Nothing I did not like in particular.

Yes – in case you look for something just OK (not a lifetime experience) – for me it was to fill the gap in the last semester of studies and to fulfill the CEMS requirements…

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

Do not expect to work on a thesis or do anything else productive – the many interns there will make sure that you enjoy your free time.

I enjoyed the work environment most. We had an open office together with about 10 start-up companies, so I could observe how they work and develop things.

Where did you find the internship? During my part-time job in the Roland Berger Prague office

How long in advance did you apply? 6 months

How did you prepare for the interviews?

I had only an interview with a Partner of the Vienna office – assessment center already passed a few years ago

How does the selection process look like?

Usually, there is a pre-interview with an HR representative and one consultant. If you are successful, you are invited to Vienna for a big recruiting day, where at least three rounds of interviews (personal and technical) take place. Finally, there is an interview with the Partner of the selected office.

Does the employer cover the interview/travel expenses

Yes.

What were your typical job responsibilities?

I was working as a full member of the consulting team involved in project work and acquisitions in the CEE region – processing market and industry analysis, responsibility for own project module

Was it a valuable experience? Yes, very much.

What did you enjoy the most/did not like?

I really valued the opportunity to be a full member of a project team, but I think I could have been included more in important meetings and decision processes (more of managers shadowing)

Would you recommend this internship to other CEMSies?

Definitely.

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

Better to apply for different than the summer period – during the summer, the project activity is usually smaller and the acquisition and research work is not as interesting as the project work

Housing Tips In Vienna, there is plenty of shared flats, so just check internet and find some cheap WG in the city center

Activity Tips The office is located directly in the city center, so it is an advantage to live somewhere nearby. During the week, there is no time for leisure, but during weekends you can enjoy various sport activities on the Donauinsel or visit some cultural events – there is always something happening in Vienna.

Where did you find the internship? CEMS Career Service

How long in advance did you apply? I applied in Sept 2010 for the summer 2011 (first round of the interviews was during the Career Forum in Budapest 2010)

How did you prepare for the interviews?

I checked the Vault´s management consulting guides, also the Wet Feet management consulting guides. I also read some basic facts about Siemens so that I would know that SIEMENS is no longer producing cell phones and washing machines.

How does the selection process look like?

First, application with CV, cover letter, transcript of records and letters of recommendation if applicable.

Does the employer cover the interview/travel expenses

Yes, the travel costs to Munich.

What were your typical job responsibilities?

Strongly varying from the project I was assigned to. Market data analysis, data collection, client data analysis (both quantitative and qualitative). Slide creation and design (but not the pure graphics, more sophisticated and content-driven)

Was it a valuable experience? Yes.

What did you enjoy the most/did not like?

You see the project moving, progressing from day to day. Unsolvable complex issues are becoming crystal clear within a few weeks of (intense) work. + real impact of what you´re doing even as intern, I clearly knew how I am contributing to the project+ the best real-life xls and ppt course, feedback oriented culture - feedback was given in friendly and constructive manner; intensive German course (everyone speaks English, German is anyways helpful for socializing)+ nice hotels (during the weeks you usually work out of Munich on the client´s site), nice dinners (I was treated as full-time employee in terms of all these perks) - everyday long working hours - basically no difference between the interns and consultants - big variety between the project you´re staffed on, you have no influence on the project you will be assigned to, you´ll find out on your first day)

Would you recommend this internship to other CEMSies?

Yes.

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

You can contact me personally if you get an offer and we can talk.

Housing Tips Quite difficult to get accommodation there for short-term, contact the company if their interns could give you a hand, generally the best chance is to know someone there, otherwise you can try www.wg-gesucht.de

Activity Tips Go there in September, you´ll get the chance to experience Oktoberfest as one of the locals (unforgettable!) In general a lot of things to do on the weekends (make no big plans for the weekdays, though).

Where did you find the internship? Online, company website.

How long in advance did you apply? I applied in December and it was already quite late. Best time to apply for summer internships to large investment banks is around September.

How did you prepare for the interviews?

Read books about the industry, relevant magazines and journals. Practiced maths calculations and graph interpretations. Talked to friends with similar experience.

How does the selection process look like?

Online application followed by online IQ and logical test. 3 phone interviews and one onsite interview.

Does the employer cover the interview/travel expenses

Yes, flight expenses were covered. Do not know about hotel, had my own accommodation. Also once accepted for the internship, flights to and from the UK are paid, as well as extra subsidy is obtained as a relocation support.

What were your typical job responsibilities?

Very various. Weekly rotations to various departments, courses on finance, banking, trading, regular feedback, speeches attendance etc.

Was it a valuable experience? Definitely!

What did you enjoy the most/did not like?

POSITIVE:How much time the company and every employee invested into the interns, even though we were not a real added value to them. I have been surprised how everyone was nice, polite, friendly, helpful and took their time – even the most senior people. We had a very nice intern class and we got to be really good friends with some of them. The company provided excellent networking opportunities for us so that we can build upon them as future employees. NEGATIVE:I did not like the really long working hours and that you had to study at home to get ready for the exams. Also constant feedback starts to be quite tiring, you feel like having a 10 week long interview.

Would you recommend this internship to other CEMSies?

Yes.

Taking your sports shoes, they have an awesome gym!

Housing Tips Try to live close to the office! Starting work at 6am or getting home around midnight might be difficult if you live far away. Having a short walk is nice after being whole day closed in the office… Otherwise no need to have an awesome flat since you will almost never be there anyway

Yes.

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

Housing Tips It is common to share flats, and I would recommend staying few days at a friends´ house or hostel and go to have a look personally on those rooms you would be interested in.

Market research through industry reports, internet sources, news, local contacts.

Was it a valuable experience? Great experience culture-wise, but not that demanding in practice.

What did you enjoy the most/did not like?

I liked the industry feel and although working for a multinational, it still felt like working for a small company. The only thing I didn’t like was the empty office during summer.

Would you recommend this internship to other CEMSies?

That depends, it was great to practice French, to learn about a new industry and the remuneration was good, but other than that, the work was quite dull.

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

Do have excellent French, you don’t need technical skill prior to starting, but you have to learn them quickly afterwards.

Housing Tips craigslist; always go for the location, not the equipment of the apartment

Where did you find the internship? Intranet website of the university with job and internships offers. (a centre for job allocation called CECOP).

How long in advance did you apply? 2 weeks.

How did you prepare for the interviews?

I prepared useful phrases in Portuguese for the interview.

How does the selection process look like?

2 interviews with the partners from this company. Only questions.

Does the employer cover the interview/travel expenses

No.

What were your typical job responsibilities?

Identification of the problems in the stock and purchasing, mapping the processes, suggesting the solutions.

Was it a valuable experience? It was definitely a valuable experience working in a Brazilian company in such an uncommon field. However, I did not learn as much as expected.

What did you enjoy the most/did not like?

I enjoyed the interaction with my boss and colleagues most. I missed a better description of my tasks.

Would you recommend this internship to other CEMSies?

Not really, because I didn´t have so much responsibility. The company is great, people are nice, but from a complex perspective, I would recommend some bigger company. However, the selection process for multinational companies takes a long time and it´s a really competitive environment.

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

From what I know, the company is not looking for interns any more. In fact, they have always been looking only for a Brazilian person with the possibility to work at least for 1 year. Another useful advice for CEMSies looking for an internship: Firstly, Portuguese is more than highly recommended. Secondly, there are a lot of job opportunities and vacancies in Brazil, however the amount of bureaucracy needed for a full-time positions is incredible. If you find a full-time job while being already in Sao Paulo, you need to come back to your country where your visa was issued in order to ask for a different type of visa to be permitted to work in respective company. In August/September 2011 they changed the rule and from now on, you are forbidden to work as a part-time intern only with student visa (which was possible before) You need a working type of visa and thus, you have to come back to Europe and then go there again…

Housing Tips Depends on the location of the company and on where the CEMSie intends to work. Itaim Bibi or Jardins are parts, where lot of working foreigners live, but they have to pay a substantial rent. Then there is a cheaper place on Av. 9 de Julho 1084 (Residencial 9), 15 minutes from the university FGV-EAESP, where only international students live.

Activity Tips Sao Paulo is a huge city with a variety of cultural options. The night life is really dynamic and Sao Paulo never sleeps, but you have to count with higher expenses. Supposedly, it´s one of the most expensive city in the world. However, you are not bored here.

Where did you find the internship? I got approached by a professor at our University who said she could recommend me to HILTI Czech Republic. After an interview there, I got offered this internship.

How long in advance did you apply? 6 months, however, the internship was approved within one month, I had to finish my semester abroad first, though.

How did you prepare for the interviews?

I thought about what I expected from a company I work for. And it ‘clicked’ at the interview.

How does the selection process look like?

I didn’t go through an official selection process. Only one interview in the Czech headquarters and a phone call with my prospective boss in Australia.

Does the employer cover the interview/travel expenses

One way flight ticked was covered.

What were your typical job responsibilities?

Everything marketing-concerned. From analyzing existing competition prior to a product launch, processing and reporting market data, to working on promotional campaigns and designing leaflet drafts. A bit of everything.

Was it a valuable experience? It definitely was a valuable experience to see the corporate reality and see how theory doesn’t always apply in practice.

What did you enjoy the most/did not like?

I enjoyed working in the Australian environment, I loved the people around me (which by the way is probably something most HILTI employees over the world would say). I didn’t so much enjoy the lack of creativity and independence in what I was doing. Just like in most corporations, I would say.

Would you recommend this internship to other CEMSies?

Yes.

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

Think about which department you would be most interested in, ask for more position available. You will always like more what you want to do.

Housing Tips Housing is a hassle in Sydney. The best is to find a friend with whom you can stay after arrival and then look for accommodation on Gumtree, Easyroommate and Flatmate. But don’t expect it to be easy, unless your requirements are rather low.

Activity Tips Australia, Australia, Australia. That is enough. Oh yes, one tip. Make sure to make a few road trips. They are the best.

Where did you find the internship? I participated in a weekend workshop organized by Roland Berger and based on the positive impression they got about me I was invited for a personal interview

How long in advance did you apply? Weekend workshop took place in April 2011, I started working for Roland Berger in July 2011, so 3 months.

How did you prepare for the interviews?

Went though several case studies, read the website of the company, went again though all the materials from the workshop.

How does the selection process look like?

As I participated in the case study weekend, I was allowed to skip the first two rounds, so I went directly to the third and last round – two interviews (one with the future boss and also with the managing partner of the Prague office).

Does the employer cover the interview/travel expenses

As the job is located in my hometown, there were no costs. However, they covered all expenses during the weekend workshop.

What were your typical job responsibilities?

Research on various topics (Transportation, Utilities, Retail, Steel and construction materials, etc.), graphics, internal administration

Was it a valuable experience? Absolutely. As the business analyst switches often from one project to another, literally every week he/she deals with a different business and the learning curve is very steep.

What did you enjoy the most/did not like?

I mostly enjoy the working atmosphere, time flexibility by the employer, scope of work. Currently I cannot imagine one single point I would like to improve or one that I really dislike.

Would you recommend this internship to other CEMSies?

Definitely, it is a valuable experience and thanks to the flexible working hours it is nicely compatible with the university stuff.

Do you have any recommendations for future CEMSies who want to become interns in this company?

If you like management consulting and want to learn a lot and do not have time for a full half-a-year internship at other companies such as McKinsey or BCG try applying for the business analyst position at Roland Berger.

CEMS Internship is an obligatory part of the CEMS studies, thus participation in the CEMS Internship abroad is necessary condition for students to graduate and to gain diploma from the CEMS MIM program. The main objective and benefit is the opportunity for students to apply theoretical knowledge into real life business situations and to gain foreign practical experience in the preferred industry.

CEMS Internship is not pre-arranged within the CEMS MIM program by the school, so each student is independently responsible to look for and do internship on his/her own. To find an internship position, students may use the email offers from corporate partners, search their websites for vacant positions, check the job offers on the official CEMS website cems.org or apply for a position in non-profit organizations or other companies based on preferences.

It is possible to do CEMS Internship at any time during the CEMS MIM program except the first year of studies. The first 3 months of full-time employment position can be also accepted as CEMS Internship as well as the internship experience prior to CEMS MIM studies.

The CEMS internship will be recognized by VSE as part of the CEMS MIM study programme, as a special course “internship abroad” with 6 ECTS credits. The internship will be part of the Diploma Supplement.

CEMS Internship REQUIREMENTS:

1. Minimum length of 10 consecutive weeks in the same company (min 12 weeks to qualify for the financial support )

2. Full-time employment

3. CEMS Internships must be done in the intercultural environment thus abroad i.e.

• Outside the country of the CEMS home institution, OR

• Outside the country of secondary education, OR

• Outside the country of citizenship

4. Professional type of employment, with sufficient level of autonomy

5. At the end of the internship the company tutor has to fill out CEMS Internship Evaluation Form - confirmation of duration and results of the internship, which students have to present to school (Ing. Gabriela Böhmová)

6. After the CEMS Internship students are required to fill in The Report on Stay Abroad into the NAEP database
