After celebrating 25 years of service to the community last year, the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane enters 2014 with new direction. Under the guidance of Anita Lennox and her team, the club will be looking to continue supporting charities locally, nationally and internationally, and to continue with our support, the Board will be giving a priority throughout the year to increasing the club membership.
In 2013, the club members raised about $45,000 supporting the needs of charities within our communities. There is an ever increasing requirement for assistance from service clubs such as Kiwanis and to maintain our support, the club must continue to increase its membership base.
The club started the New Year with three new members, who were inducted last month by the President, pictured from left Anita Lennox, Reianna Vercoe, David Read and Kathy Dunne, whose first commitment to the community was helping out at the Kiwanis BBQ for the Salvation Army Christmas Carols at Peter Lightfoot Oval, Middle Park.

Wolston and Centenary Catchments (affectionately known as WaCC) is a community organisation that aims to educate, enhance and protect the natural environmental values of the area.
Late last year, the park near Bilga and Naver Street in Jamboree Heights welcomed nearly 50 community members. Joining WaCC for a community and family fun tree planting day, members of the catchment and community planted tree sapling after tree sapling, carrying water to and from the water station and thoroughly dirtying previously untouched gardening gloves.
Participants planted over 500 tree saplings in the Park’s natural vegetation strip reflecting that when a group of people gather together for a common cause something big can grow from something that stands small by itself.
The hard work was followed by a well deserved BBQ and a wildlife show presented by Gecko Wildlife Presentations. Children and adults alike were amazed by the critters from cute bandicoots to scary baby crocodiles! As well as being lots of fun, the wildlife show reminded all involved as to why it is important to restore the local environment.
The community and family tree planting day is just one aspect of the activities WaCC organises. There are a range of volunteer opportunities including bushcare, marketing, communications and project management. If you are

interested in learning more skills, meeting new people or just getting more involved in your local environment and community then WaCC is a group that may interest you.
In my experience volunteering with WaCC for just over 12 months, I have learned a range of skills which will benefit me in my future profession and as a person. Being able to assist the secretary of WaCC with the planning and implementation of the community tree planting day is just one opportunity awaiting in WaCC and it has taught me that from small actions big things grow!
If you would like more information about how to be involved in WaCC visit the Wolston and Centenary Catchments facebook page or email [email protected].

routine; noun - a sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program.
If you set new years resolutions, chances are you need to make those new things part of your routine. All the usual ones, such as, fitness, better eating, looking after yourself, or working towards finishing a project will require some sort of regular input in order to be accomplished.
I don’t know about you, but the word ‘routine’ has a negative ring to it for me. Maybe it’s just my personality which leans more towards spontaneity than structure, and more towards impulse than intentionality, but when I hear the word ‘routine’ I groan inwardly, and sometimes outwardly!
When you read the dictionary definition of the word, you’ll see that it’s not negative or remotely off putting at all. It’s merely the act of repeating a behaviour or exercise. See, it’s quite harmless really!
Why do I buck against the thing that will actually give my life a sense of order, and help me achieve the things I want to achieve?
Upon scrutiny, we see that routine makes up the life of every successful person. Tennis players certainly would know that routine practice makes them progress up the rankings. Musicians will agree that routinely working on their talent will increase their skill. And we all know that life runs far more smoothly if our kids have a good routine for before and after school!
So why do so many of us (yes, I am assuming I’m not alone in this!) have a problem with keeping on doing the same thing day after day?
Sometimes, I think it’s lack of results. If we’re trying to get fit, it can be hard to gauge our progress each day. If we’re trying to write a book, the slow incremental increase of that word count can seem non existent most days. If we’re adding activities into our day that will increase our mental health and well being, it’s hard to see those changes on a daily basis.
Day by day, it can feel like skipping the gym ‘just this one day’ won’t make a big difference; and that not writing those 300 words ‘just this one day’ won’t effect the final tally when you submit the manuscript to an editor; or being too busy for that one hour of meditation ‘just this one day’ won’t really effect our overall demeanour for the day.
The truth is though, the reason routines work and make a difference in our lives, is because their effects are accumulative.
You may remember an ad that used to be on TV, I can’t remember what for (clearly didn’t work too well then, did it!) but the catch phrase was, ‘it won’t happen overnight...but it will happen!’
If we try to remain focussed on the end goal and not on the single steps we take each day, before we know it, we’ll be where we want to be and our goal will be our reality.

Dogs and cats feel the heat just as much as we do, and can show signs of heat stress and discomfort. In addition to avoiding excessive exercise in the heat of the day, here are a few tips to make summer time fun for your pets.• Ice cubes or a frozen
ice cream container of water are a great way to cool down your pooch – you can add them to their water bowl or give them a challenge by freezing a piece of kibble inside each cube.
• Buy a wading pool (not inflatable!). Fill it up with about 10cm of water and add some favourite toys or some ice cubes. The clamshell pools are perfect for your pets.
• Get a sandpit for your dog - dogs love to lie in the cool sand. In really hot, dry weather, it helps to wet the sand first.
• Have plenty of shady trees for your pet to keep cool beneath.
• Cats and dogs generally find the coolest spot in the house to lie - you can make life breezy for them by keeping a bowl of water near this area.
• Icepacks in their beddings and surrounds will help keep them cool. Just make sure that the pack is wrapped up in order to avoid ice burn on your pet’s skin.
• Give them a summer clip - long haired dogs and cats really do enjoy their long coats being clipped off. Not only does this help them feel cool, but it stops moulting and furballs.
• Try a belly clip – if you think a full clip would be too much for your pet, why not try a belly clip instead? The belly hair is clipped very short, which looks inconspicuous and keeps them cool when they lie on the ground. And as always, remember to brush and groom regularly. The hot lazy days of summer can be fun for everyone
and they are certainly easier for our pets to enjoy if we help them manage the heat.
Summer time fun!

Mount Ommaney MP, Tarnya Smith recently announced the official naming of four creeks in South-West Brisbane, with the names chosen from nominations presented by the Wolston and Centenary Catchments (WaCC).
“I am pleased to announce the four names for the local creeks are Ric Natrass Creek, Scott Creek, Spinks Creek and Jindalee Creek,” Mrs Smith said.
“Ric Natrass Creek has been named in honour of the late wildlife expert and former Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service Ranger Ric Nattrass, who was also a well-known conservationist, broadcaster and a community educator in the area of the environment and biodiversity.
“Scott Creek was named after the late local resident, timber businessman and pineapple farmer Frank Scott.
“Mr Scott came to the Darra district in 1919 at the age of 18 where he established a small sawmill and supported local community groups and immigrants by milling timber that many Richlands battlers felled on their land to build their homes.
“Spinks Creek was named to honour the late long-time resident and property developer Ray Spinks, who provided affordable residential allotments throughout the district and established estates in Ellen Grove, Carole Park, Pallara, Heathwood and Doolandella.
“Finally, the name Jindalee Creek is well-known and has been used by the local community for a long period of time. The creek is also signposted with this name on Sinnamon Road and Oldfield Road.”
Mrs Smith said the WaCC originally submitted a proposal last year to name the four creeks in the west Brisbane area after several well-known local residents.
The proposals came with the support of the Richlands, Inala and Suburbs Historical Group and the Centenary Suburbs Historical Society, and the local community gave their endorsement to the name suggestions during a public consultation period earlier this year.
Information about Queensland’s Place Names decisions is available at www.dnrm.qld.gov.au or by phoning 13 QGOV (7468).

It’s not too late to prepare your home for summer storms. None of us will forget the last two summers where floods were a very real danger, so let’s all make sure we do everything we can to stay safe and ensure our property is as ready as it can be.
The first place to start is by holding a family meeting and discussing various exit strategies or simply what to do in the case of a severe storm. This doesn’t need to be alarming for any younger members, rather, remember to give them specific tasks so they are a part of the solution and feel useful during an emergency. Having a job to do can ease anxiety and engender a feeling of contribution.
Ensure you have important documents all together and easily accessible. With so much technology available to us, an alternative to having to worry about grabbing hard copies is to simply take a photograph of documents, save them to your smart phone, dropbox or icloud, or an external portable hard drive. This saves having to keep them free from damage or the possibility of forgetting them on exiting your home.
Assemble both an evacuation kit and emergency kit, if possible. An evacuation kit should include items such as a blanket or two, a change of clothes for each family member, valuables/mementos, phones and essential medication. An emergency kit needs to include water and food for three days, first aid kit, torch, spare batteries including phone chargers, cash, toiletries, and essential medication. For a complete list, go to www.emergency.qld.gov.au/emq/css/beprepared.asp and click on the SES checklist link.
There are also things that can be done around the home to increase safety and reduce potential damage to you and your neighbours homes. Check the condition of your roof and keep gutters clear of leaf matter and branches. Trim branches close to the home and secure loose items in the garden. Identify the strongest room in the house in case shelter is needed during a severe storm. Know how and where to turn off main water, electricty and gas supplies. Fill buckets and/or bath with clean water in case of lack of supply. Remember to take advantage of storm warning alerts and check for updates regularly.
Most importantly remember that houses and possessions can be replaced but people can’t. Always make decisions with the safety of you and your family as the priority and leave your property before it’s too late.
Stay safe this storm season

Hello ReadersWe are very excited about The Rite Journey program for our Year Nine students to be introduced in 2014. Students in the Middle School at St John’s are provided with the very best personal development opportunities to support the unique emotional and physical development of their early teenage years.
The Rite Journey provides unique educational programs designed to support the development of self-aware, vital, responsible, respectful and resilient adults. By raising young people’s consciousness about transitioning from child to adult and having conversations with them about what really matters, we can assist in guiding their journey into adulthood.
The specially developed program includes discussion and reflection, and development of strategies which support the transition to adulthood. In today’s society, sociologists believe that boys are generally under-fathered and that the media displays role models who are making poor choices and that it presents our girls with unrealistic roles models. We know that young people spend up to 30 hours a week in front of computer screens at the expense of human connection. This issue alone exposes young people to a massive amount of information which is awash with miss- information. Young people are negotiating a world which
is significantly different to that in which their parents have grown up in.
Our teachers have undertaken special training to deliver the year long program and are looking forward to introducing The Rite Journey into the personal development program. You can learn more about this at www.theritejourney.com.au
Together with our personal development program our Future Thinkers Extension program, which also starts in Year Nine, sets the scene for a successful career for St John’s students. If you would like to know more about how our programs can prepare your child for their future, please contact our Registrar, on 3372 0176 for your personalised tour of the College. Alternatively, our next College on Display for Year Seven to Twelve is Wednesday, 12 March 2014 from 4 pm to 7 pm.
Scholarship applications for 2015 are now open but close 28 February 2014. Please refer to the
St John’s website for more scholarship information.

Valued at $38.50on presentation of this adOur members eagerly await our first General Meeting
of the year on Tuesday 4th February, 9.30am at the Jindalee Bowls Club where we will enjoy morning tea and catch up on everything that has happened over Christmas, a short meeting followed by our Entertainer for the day – Bill Henderson.
Each month we alternate either a speaker or entertainer. We are all excited about the activities we have planned for 2014, catching up with all of our old friends that we know and welcoming new members who will quickly become our friends. Why not come along and join us and make your life more active and fun-filling? We all have a lot to gain in our future years.
Our ‘Steady Steps’ exercise classes are very popular, held at the Uniting Church hall, Middle Park each Monday morning at 9am – cost $7; also the ‘Zumba Gold’ classes held at the same venue each Wednesday at 9.15am – cost $8. Everyone is welcome.
Our clever MahJong players meet at Mt Ommaney Library on the first two Thursdays each month at 9am. Don’t be shy, we will teach you how to play (for Members only). We also enjoy morning teas, evening dinners, concerts, plays and Coach and Explorer Trips which are held on alternate months.
Our Christmas parties are the highlight of the year; last year, we had thirty-nine hampers to raffle which caused a lot of excitement. We thank our Committee who work hard to put all of this together.
As you can see we have a very busy and active program and we are always keen to have your suggestions. Now there must be something that would interest you (we are all over 50), so we invite you to come along on the 4th, we will meet you at the door, hand you our two month newsletter, introduce you to Marlene, our never-stop-working President and make you welcome. I am sure you will want to return next meeting.
For more details please ring Elaine on 3376 1986.
A group of local residents have recently formed the Brisbane Centenary Crime Stoppers group. The group meets the first Wednesday of every month at Lions Club, Richlands at 6.30pm. Anyone interested in joining is most welcome to attend, or call Fiona on 0434 614 410.
The goal of the group is to assist in keeping everyone safe by encouraging people to phone anonymously and giving relevant information to help prevent/solve a crime - sometimes there is a reward involved depending on the crime.
The group is looking for more volunteers to help promote awareness of the group, help with fundraising towards the ‘rewards’ offered and other necessary aspects of the organisation. Crime Stoppers is not part of the Queensland Police but help forward on information received to help assist them in their role.
The first fund raising event for the group, will be a Bowls Day at Oxley Bowls on Sunday 30th March 2014. More details will be outlined in upcoming editions of the Centenary News.

Coaching For Life
With Christmas behind us and the new school year about to start, it’s a good time to consider the goals we want for our children for 2014.
Most parents say they “just want the kids to be happy”, but what do we really mean by this? Is happiness the only thing we want for our children, or are there other qualities we believe will help them achieve success in life?
For example, I believe most parents want their children to be strong enough to persevere even when the going gets tough. We also want our kids to be resilient, to be able to ‘bounce back’ when things don’t go the way they’d hoped. Most of us want our children to grow into compassionate adults who show caring and sensitivity to others. And we want them to know themselves, their own unique strengths and personality traits, as well as being aware enough of their deficits so that they are willing to keep growing into their best possible selves.
When we look at people who have become outstanding in their own field, we used to think this was just genetic luck. But now we know that success is much more than just the DNA. In fact, true success is born of hard work, passion and determination.
Research has shown that innate ability has only a small influence on why people go from being merely good at something to being truly great.
The real drivers for success are having a vision that inspires excitement and grit, setting goals that are prioritised over other (often more attractive) indulgences, connecting with people who believe in us and are willing to share their own wisdom and experience, and then committing to deliberate and persistent practice.
We know it’s this latter quality that rewires the brain such that challenges become natural habits or skills. Of course, persistent practice is not often much fun but many studies have shown that those elite performers were able to use the quality of grit to engage in solitary practice over and over until they mastered each objective on the path towards their final goal.
In reality, most of us are comfortable not being experts and don’t really expect our kids to become experts either. But as parents, to nurture these qualities of passion, perseverance and practice in our kids gives them some pretty fantastic tools to get through life well.
So, at the start of the school year, consider sitting down with your kids and talking with them about what they want to achieve this year, no matter how big or small. Map out the steps they’ll need to ensure the best chance of success, including helping them understand the importance of time management and balancing work, rest and play.
Most of all, accept that you are their most important coach, take the task seriously and do the best you can to guide them whilst also sharing their highs and lows along the way.
And finally, do the same for yourself since the best coaches are those who walk the walk, and don’t just talk the talk!

Centenary Suburbs Historical Society update by Vice President Lynda Young
Exploring the past in the Centenary suburbs – part 2If you’re looking for a family outing, there’s no need to travel too far from home. Simply
park the car in Summit Place off Westlake Drive opposite Mcleod Country Golf Course, look towards the golf course and you will see a large colony of ecologically important fruit bats hanging in the trees along the road. The Mcleod golf course made history in the 1960s as the first golf club in Australia to be wholly administered by women. Walking into the Mt Ommaney Walkway you will see a plaque commemorating the site of Oxley’s campsite at the foot of Green Hill, now known as Mt Ommaney, the former green grassy slopes prompting its earlier name.
Cross a small bridge over Little Ommaney Creek and set off up the path of the Mt. Ommaney Walkway on this lovely track with the Brisbane River on your left. Imagine the explorer Oxley rowing upstream in 1823 being guided by some shipwrecked cedar cutters!
For the past 17 years, the Jindalee Bushcare Group has maintained the area, which is now recognized as one of Brisbane’s recommended sites for bird watching. Since 2000 the feral Rusa deer have been stripping trees of their bark, causing soil erosion and trampling plants. You could look out for evidence of this. The track descends into the site of an old bluestone quarry. Variously known as Garnet Rock, Darra and Carr’s Quarry, it produced road-making materials and provided much needed employment for men during the depression of the 1930s. Remnants of the quarrying equipment may still be seen at the river’s edge, having survived several floods.
Continue your bush walk uphill away from the river on steps and boardwalks emerging onto Mt Ommaney Drive and you will have walked about 1.2 kilometres. Your path follows the route taken by passengers in 1951 on boat trip pilgrimages to the statue of Our Lady of Fatima on Mt Ommaney. You can read the notice board and drink from the water fountain before returning the way you came, enjoying glimpses of the river Oxley explored so long ago. I would like to wish all Mount Ommaney residents a happy 2014, in what I am sure will be a busy, but exciting year.
To help with the most common of New Year’s resolutions, the Queensland Government have launched Get Healthy. The Get Healthy program from the Department of Health supports Queenslanders who wish to get in shape and get healthy.
It is a free, confidential service that helps people make lifestyle changes in relation to healthy eating, being physically active, and achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.Qualified Get Healthy Coaches will provide information and ongoing health coaching and support to help you achieve your health goals.
I encourage all local residents who have made a resolve to either get in shape or get healthy to visit the website gethealthy.qld.gov.au.
In conjunction with this program, the Queensland Government have set up a health age calculator. This calculator will assist with identifying your health age and your current health and fitness levels, as well as recommending some small simple steps that will help you improve your health and wellbeing. Find out your health age by going to www.healthier.qld.gov.au.
I would also urge local residents to continue to be vigilant with storm or disaster preparedness. On any given day, Queenslanders could be faced with the threat of storm, cyclone, bushfires or even flood however it’s ultimately up to us how we weather the storm and prepare ourselves.
It’s up to everyone to ensure nobody is caught off guard by preparing our homes and families so emergency crews can be directed where they will do the most good. The Queensland Government, along with the SES, have set up a website to help locals remain prepared in the event of storms. Visit www.disaster.qld.gov.au/getready for tips and suggestions. The best time to prepare for a storm is now, and not when you are not in the middle of one.
Best wishes for 2014, and together lets create a healthier and happier Queensland.
